Ancient Capital of Cambodia: Oudong
Also known as the Capital of the Past Kings, the ancient capital of Cambodia, Oudong, is a worthy World Heritage Site with a long history. The city was the capital of the Cambodian Kingdom for more than 200 years. Until the 15th century, Cambodia was a part of the Khmer Empire and Angkor was their capital. However, as the French took control of the country when the Khmer fell from power, Cambodia entered its dark ages and the capital became Oudong. Very little information about those times was ever recorded; however, the ancient capital is one of the most culturally important and visually impressive relics of the post-Angkorian era.

Neak Neang Chom Dara “A Star’s Beauty Image” (Protectorat français du Cambodge 1863- 1953)
Tumblr media
King Norodom, born as Ang Votey, requested establishment of a French protectorate over the Kingdom of Kampuchea in 1863 during land disputes and closing in from the west (Siam) and the east (Vietnam: Nguyen Dynasty). The capital moved from Oudong to Phnom Penh in 1865. In the first few decades under French protection was harsh to adapt. In comparison to Vietnam and Laos, Cambodia paid the highest taxes per capita, revolts for the throne, King puppeteers to the French- was it protection from outsiders or doing more damage on the inside?
Tumblr media
Infrastructures grew at a slower pace and rubber plantations setup all over Cambodia as the car industry grew in France. Although widely practiced, Theravada Buddhism shared a spotlight with Roman Catholicism, which successfully converted a small portion of the population. Cultural customs and beliefs integration had a big impact on livelihood and survival rates. Cambodia was under protection of the French, however that meant they had sovereignty over customs, politics and resources. Mothers from the countryside often sent their daughters to the capital to be educated in French language and groomed to be a woman of society- attending private and selective social gatherings, galas and balls often to heighten their statuses and reputations to become prospects to their counterpart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
French fashion integrated with Khmer textiles and still is today. “Au Pak” or laced tops is still used in Khmer wedding ceremonies, temple wears, and for custom holidays. Dark coiled hair, finger-waved, blushed cheeks, crimson lips, strong brows… a country girl turned city girl in order to bring honor and status to her family. Amidst the danger of being in the city sometimes, woman had to go through extensive training from their mentors to be educated, poised and still hold Khmer customs and traditions. It was not easy to be a Khmer woman in a climate that the French men had control of and upper hand in.

“Traveling is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”
...
Oudong City. This beautiful historical site was the former royal capital of Cambodia from 17th to 19th century and King Monivong was buried at the top of the mountain. The mountain is translated to the “Hill of the Royal Fortune.” Before the Khmer Rouge, there were 100s of stupas, but now stands the current temple and houses 1000 Buddha statues. #cambodia #oudong

Tida Kesor Mealea
Tida Kesor Mealea from folktale Chao Srothob Chaek, “Banana Leaf Boy” (Oudong/Longvek Era, 15th-18th C.)
Tumblr media
The story of Chao Srothob Chaek or Banana Leaf Boy is unique and centralized to Cambodia only. It tells a story that intertwine classism, romance, and perseverance. Surround the main characters Pratheap and Kesor Mealea, the beginning was a good and peaceful relationship amongst the parents of both family as they were destined and betrothed to one another at a very young age- believed that both Pratheap and Kesor Mealea were Thevi and Thevabot incarnated into human beings from a prayer that the parents had made when both couples were newlyweds. Both married couples were millionaires who purely support charity and gave back to the community. Having status they both met at an auspicious temple that is believed to be mystical- enough that their wish to have children were granted. When Pratheap and Kesor Mealea exchanged engagement gifts, the parents had also vowed that they would always support and be there for one another.
Tumblr media
One day, Pratheap’s father fell ill and past away thus cutting off the livelihood and finances that supported the family. His family fell into poverty and lost their status. Pratheap’s mother had no other choice than to seek the help of the soon-to-be in laws, however was met with a fateful tragedy when Kesor Meaksa’s father cut ties with them for their lost of status and revoked the marriage between Pratheap and Kesor Mealea. The guards were also ordered to beat Pratheap’s mother to death leaving him to be homeless and an orphan. Thus the village kids often mocked him for wearing banana leafs as clothing as he could not afford clothes. He was often bullied and mocked by both children and adults. His nickname was Chao Chaek (Banana). Kesor Mealea is now a fully developed woman who still remembers and love Pratheap refusing to marry any other prospect her father set her up with. One day she came across a dessert snack, Agao (coconut cakes) that was so well made it pleased her enough to ask her maids where and who they bought it from. It made her even more excited to eat it everyday once she found out the dessert snack was made by Chao Chaek. He stopped making desserts for her once he found out Kesor Mealea was buying all of his dessert as he held a grudge with her father- being the reason for his mother’s tragic ending. The romance begin as Kesor Mealea pursued Pratheap endlessly not letting go of their vows that was made back when they were children, softening his heart little by little.

Tumblr media
One day, he enters a contest that the king held to search for someone wise and a man born with power to tame a magical and wild elephant and in return, become king, which he succeeded and was betrothed the princess, Neang Bopha. Kesor Mealea was then retrieved by King Chaek and entered the palace as Queen Kesor Mealea and Princess Bopha as consort. The story ends with the three living a harmonious life together.
