Album Review: Fernando Perdomo - Out to Sea 4

Prolific recording artist and super-Todd Rundgren fan Fernando Perdomo wears his Utopian colors proudly on his strings on Out to Sea 4.

In fact, the LP resembles Rundgren more than even 2021’s TRGTR and ’22’s Someone/Anyone? The 50th Anniversary TRibute to Something/Anything? Across 12 cuts and 55 minutes, Perdomo, though he’s not doing covers this time around, tries to sound as much like a Rundgren/Utopia backing track circa ’72-’77 as possible.

Perdomo doesn’t cop any melodies; instead he draws inspiration from Rundgren’s mindset, style and tone as he runs the emotional gamut from melancholic to celebratory and from ponderous to pounding.

As the title suggests, OtS4 is fourth LP in what Perdomo facetiously calls a trilogy of instrumental prog-rock albums. Ending as it does with the epic, 10-minute “Final Voyage,” the series may in fact be done. And if it is, it’s not a bad way to go out.

Primarily a guitar album, OtS4 also employs secondary bass, tertiary drums and occasional keys that seem as if they were overdubbed at the last minute because … prog.

While there’s no filler, per se - and “Crestfallen” and “Song of Joy” are dichotomous gems - one could argue nearly an hour of Rundgren-esque riffing is too much for a single listening session. And one would be correct if one did.

Vinyl is thus the best format with which to experience Out to Sea 4.
