Merrick/Raphael, "impractical"
“It does seem impractical,” Raphael says, settling at the table with a cup of coffee for each of them, “sending someone with your injury traipsing through the Andes looking for cinchona trees.”
Merrick doesn’t look up from the sketch of the whitewood brach he’s finishing, trying to get the pattern of the wood just right. It’s the most oblique reference Raphael’s ever made to his leg being a deterrent and he’s trying not to take it personally.
“I think you’re underestimating my prowess as a gardener,” he says, finally. “Not to mention my powers of seduction.”
He means it as an obvious joke, one you would know just by looking at him, but when he glances up at Raphael, he’s staring so hard at the floor that Merrick is convinced he’s trying to start a fire with his mind. Clearly flirting with their guide isn’t going to get him anywhere. Clem would have been proud of him for trying anyway.

I love the character of Merrick Tremayne so much because it’s like, yes, he’s basically a professional criminal and he’s very cunning and dangerous, but also, the second he thinks Raphael is maybe mad at him for any reason, he turns into a sentient Richard Siken poem and I just think that’s great
#he’s also just like.....a gardener?? while also being a smuggler AND a gay disaster??#i love him your honor#the bedlam stacks#merrick tremayne#natasha pulley#i just finished my reread and there was one part wherw he said or did something so siken-esque#that im pretty sure i put the book down and walked away for a second#otp: santo patrono#richard siken
