31 Days of Dangan, Day 3: Fav Novel

Danganronpa 0 (vol 2)

Honestly, I haven't read most of the DR novels (DR Kirigiri and DR Togami remain mysterious mysteries to me), but of the ones I have read, DR 0 far surpasses the others, and between the two, I find the second to be my favorite of the 2.

For one thing, Ryoko Otonashi is one of the best protagonists this series has seen, and her journey being interspersed with snippets from Yasuke, Kyoko, and even Jin Kirigiri were a welcome way to break up the scenes in which Ryoko could and could not remember. Speaking of Yasuke, he made a fantastic complex character, and the way in which he represents Junko's hope is so tragic, I cannot get over it, ever.

DR 0 did the 'you were the villain all along' twist incredibly, well before Hajime, and I found the reveal to be much stronger here than it is in SDR2, mainly because Junko herself actually appears, and Ryoko being forced to stab Yasuke before then being murdered herself has more of a tragic end fitting of such a reveal imo.

I'm also a big fan of the Isshiki Octuplets and the psychic link they seem to have with each other, and how that supposedly makes them act as the SHSL Bodyguards as well. Even more than that, though, I liked actually meeting Mukuro Ikusaba as herself, and watching her kick all their asses at the same time. She's such a fucking unit of a person, and I wish we got to see more of her.

This is also the novel in which we saw the Reserve Course & Monokuma cult, a very welcome addition to the series, and first hear of Izuru Kamukura. Even if the main plot focuses much more on Junko and Ryoko, the supplemental information from background setup has so much impact on the series, and I love this introduction to it much more than just playing SDR2 and getting the 'crash course for dummies' that spoon feeds it to you.

Overall, it's just a really great novel, one that I've reread several times, and it's always gonna hold a place in my heart as "way better than I ever expected it to be, and then some"
