Haru's more on the reserved side. He's the listener rather than the speaker, so he would have more trouble showing affection through words

Even if they're not physically touching, Haru also enjoys just hanging out with his loved one, chilling together, and just being in their presence.

Restless Night - otaryu

Your prompt: Ota and Ryu are unable to sleep after watching a horror movie, but neither will admit that the movie scared them. 

A/N: IT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE THIS LONG AKSNSLDNSLMS but of course I got carried away and now it's 2K words :")

It was a casual home date, as the two didn't feel like going outside that weekend. Ota was preparing the snacks while Ryu listlessly browsed for a movie on whatever's on the trending list. Ryu, being the sometimes dumbass he is, didn't even check anything about the movie he selected, and the two of them sat there watching the movie, unaware of what was about to come. 

Needless to say, it was scary as hell and very gory. Ota was definitely no fan of horror movies, but not wanting to ruin their date, she had insisted on continuing on despite her discomfort. Unbeknownst to her, Ryu was just as shaken about horror movies as she was, but of course, his pride would never let him admit that to her. When he suggested that they change the movie, it was not only for Ota but his own sanity as well. As much as he appreciated her thoughtfulness, now wasn't a good time for it. But Ota was stubborn when she had her mind set, so it was useless to try and change her mind. 

So the movie ends and the two of them are just there, sitting still. It's been five minutes, but none of them moved from their position. Ryu is the first to break out of his dazed trance. "A-Are you okay, Ota?" 

Ota, who was clinging to Ryu's arm for dear life, nodded slowly, her eyes blank as her soul still hadn't returned to her yet. Ryu silently sighs in relief and teases her in an attempt to calm their nerves. "You're practically all over my lap now, you sure you weren't scared at all?" 

But Ota only had a disappointed pout on her face, and as cute as it was, he'd rather not see her all sad because of how their date turned out. 

"...Sorry, it was my fault, I should've actually checked the movie before we watched it. You must have hated going through all of that." Ryu apologized sincerely, knowing that he'd also hate it if he had to continue watching horror movies against his will. 

Ota shook her head. "Don't blame yourself so much, it was an honest mistake. Besides, I was the one who insisted on continuing the movie when you suggested we stop, so I'm the one who willingly put myself in that situation as well. I know you care very much, and I love you for that." 

Ryu could only blush in response to Ota's sweet words. No matter the situation, she can never go without showing all her love, and it's really making his heart go places. Ryu was about to suggest they watch something more lighthearted to clear their minds off of the film until he saw how late it was. Ota noticed as well and was about to pack up, but then Ryu suddenly offered that she sleepover. At his smile, she felt his reassurance, a reassurance that said he would protect her from anything she feared, delusional or not, yet in his eyes was something more pleading. It was all she needed to give in to his request, any protest she had about over-welcoming her stay or intrusion disappeared. 

...

1:30 am 

It had been two hours since they turned out the lights, but Ota was nowhere near off to dreamland. The moment she'd close her eyes, images of all the horrific scenes of the film would develop in her head, reenacting everything from the visuals to the sounds, to the way it made her heart thump and sweat profusely. Any more and she'd probably trap herself in watching another round of the movie. She'd rather not interrupt Ryu's sleep with her restlessness, so instead, she opted to stay awake. Maybe fatigue would eventually drag her into slumber. 

But it had been two hours, and her mind was as active as ever. The fear of the fictional monstrosities coming to life still haunted her and everything she tried to put herself to sleep had been unsuccessful, if not keeping her more awake. What else could there be to do to make her sleepy? It was time to ask Dr Google. Ota eyed her bag in the corner of Ryu's room. 

Earlier, when Ryu informed the staff of Ota's overnight stay, they all immediately rushed to prepare one of their guest rooms for the young master's partner. Ota froze. The thought of having to stay in an unfamiliar room in an unfamiliar part of the huge Akimoto household with the possibility of the dangers lurking around with no one but herself??? Maybe going home was a better idea if that were the case, but the possibility of it following her home as well- 

Before her wild imagination could continue any further, Ryu gave Ota's small hand a squeeze, pulling her out of her thoughts. He gave her a smirk. "Otoha is sleeping with me." 

The room fell into pin-drop silence at his words, the rushing staff suddenly froze in place. Some had even dropped the equipment in their hands out of shock at hearing such a statement, the clattering noises being the only disturbance to the silence. It was like a moment captured from a single frame of a film. The head of the family staff was the first to speak up. "M-Master Ryūhei, sir, isn't that quite... inappropriate, at this time and age in your relationship?" 

Obviously, whatever Ryu's been doing outside of school in the past never made a word to the Akimoto household. Ryu raised an eyebrow as if his words did not at all sound inappropriate to him. Ota, who was genuinely unaware of what Ryu's words could have implied otherwise, asked what the head staff meant. The head staff's ears turned red in shame, while Ryu just chuckled at her usual innocence, prodding at the head staff at this given chance. 

"Yeah, Mr Kobayashi, whatever could you mean by that? I only want Ota to sleep with me because that movie we watched made her too scared to sleep alone. Is it a bad thing to want to watch over your frightened partner? And before you start bringing him up, I care more about my girlfriend than what my father thinks." 

So the head staff reluctantly gave in to Ryu's request, only asking that there be a significant space between them when in the room together to prevent causing any issues, or getting anyone into trouble. 

Back to the present. 

On the mission to retrieve her phone, Ota slowly sat up and brought her legs off to the side of Ryu's bed, as carefully as she could to not disturb the boy's sleep. 

But not careful enough. 

Before Ota could hop off of the bed, a hand suddenly grabbed at her arm, firm enough to prevent her from leaving, but not hard enough to hurt her. Startled, Ota fell back on the bed at the force of his hand and was face to face with Ryu, who was wide awake. 

But there was something unusual about him that night. His eyes; they were very wide, his pupils dilated, in contrast to his usually relaxed, half-lidded eyes. In place of the sparkle of amusement in eyes was the dreaded look of fear. But why did he look so scared? 

"Where are you going?" Ryu asked curtly, his lack of tone hiding any obvious sign of fear. It caught Ota off guard, as it almost sounded like he was mad, but she glanced over at her bag and replied "To get my phone. I-I've been having trouble falling asleep..." 

"Why didn't you try asking me? I could've helped!..." 

"I-I didn't want to wake you up! It would be rude of me to wake you up for such a small matter..." 

Ryu sat up properly, his eyebrows furrowed, not pleased with Ota's response. "First, you forced yourself to go through something you don't like despite being offered not to because you put me before yourself. And now you were going to stay up all night trying to figure out how to fall asleep when you could've asked me to help. Ota, it doesn't matter how big or small your problems might be, you should start asking for help more instead of trying to keep it in and dealing with it on your own. Rely on me more! I know how selfless you are, and as admirable as that is, it makes me feel pathetic how I can't even help you when I know you're having problems because you refuse to let me help you. You're the one who taught me to rely on and trust in others instead of keeping everything in, so shouldn't you be doing the same?" 

Ota was left speechless, processing everything that Ryu said. 'He's right... I'm always telling Ryu to not keep everything in and to rely on the others around him more, but how can I expect him to trust that when I'm not even following my own advice?' She felt bad, really bad. Especially once she realized that there was more to why Ryu wanted for her to sleep over. 

'I didn't even notice that Ryu was also scared and ended up forcing him through it as well.' 

The look in his eyes when he insisted on changing the movie. When he joked around after the movie. When he asked Ota to sleep over. When he noticed Ota get out of bed - he probably couldn't even fall asleep like she did. Every time, all his eyes said was "fear". If only Ota had noticed it from the start. 

"I'm so sorry Ryu. You're right, I shouldn't be keeping everything to myself when I could be receiving help right in front of me. It does more harm than good as well... I'm always doing what I think is best for everyone, I'd hate to burden others, but in the end, I've come to just assume what I think is best and become ignorant of the reality of the situation. Even now, Ryu, you're also scared aren't you? You don't like horror movies?" 

Ryu's eyes widened, not expecting Ota to point that out, let alone notice it at all. He turned red in embarrassment, trying to sputter whatever excuse he could make to cover it up. But then he remembered that he just lectured Ota about keeping things from each other, now wasn't the time to be so prideful. He put off his brave front and sighed, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly. 

"Even after I lecture you, you still worry about me... Yes, I am scared. As unrealistic as horror movies are, I hate them. Lame, isn't it?" 

"It's not lame. I'm scared as well, so I know how it feels. Even when you know it's not real, you can't help but feel as if it is... You know that as well, which is why you also offered to protect me, isn't it? Geez, you're always calling yourself so selfish but doesn't this show how you care about others as well?

"Like you said, we shouldn't keep things from each other right? So let's be more open from now on. It might take time because I think it's just part of our character that we're not so straightforward, but we can do it! We've learned from today, so next time we'll do better." 

Ryu hummed in agreement, then flopped back onto the bed with a tired sigh. He looked over at the clock. 2:45 am. And the two of them were still awake. Suddenly, he had an idea. 

"Hey Ota, do you wanna cuddle?" 

Ota brightened up at the suggestion and immediately latched herself onto the boy. "Yes please!" She giggled cutely as she snuggled into his chest. Ryu was once again internally screaming over how cute she was. He gently wrapped his arms around her smaller frame, and soon enough, the young couple fell into a peaceful sleep, no recollection of the horror movie to disturb their slumber.

Coffee Shop!AU

After graduating high school, Ota decided to start a small coffee shop.

She took education for two years after earning money to take the classes during gap year, so she opened up this coffee shop by the age of 22.

Haru is a part-timer. Haru would be in sophomore year in college, studying to become some sort of designer.

Haru works full-time during summer breaks.

Ota always insists that he doesn't need to and that he should actually go and take his summer break, but as always, he doesn’t listen to her and even gives himself his own shifts since Ota doesn’t give him enough, he claims

Ota would also insist on at least paying him for his work, but he also turns that down.

Haru designed the cafe’s logo and the window and blackboard art.

Ota rewards the her brother with an additional drink and treats after his shifts.

Ryu is a regular customer who always comes just to see Ota.

He’s fallen head over heels for the cute barista, and always tries to flirt, but of course, our cute barista is dense as always.

Meanwhile, Haru would put salt in his coffee whenever he’s the one brewing it, just to spite him. Ryu can never complain because, well, Ota… 

Ryu’s tried to leave his number with Ota multiple times, but it never makes it to her, either through the intervention of Haru or some other unfortunate events.

Eventually, Ryu gave up and decided to be straightforward about it. Of course, it took a little more effort to get the message through to her, but they eventually do try out dating.

Singer!AU

Ryu becomes a successful music producer and singer

Ota has all his albums and memorized a lot of his songs. She’s his number one fan <3

Ota always gets backstage pass to his live concerts

In the future, Ryu writes a song for Ota and proposes to her on one of his live concerts on stage, also revealing who his cute girlfriend is to the public <3

At first, Ryu wanted to make it official to the public that he has a girlfriend and wanted to show who it is, but Ota would tell him not to, in fear of ruining his public image and career

So Ryu has been waiting for a long time to finally tell the public about it

Mythological!AU

Ryu is a dragon, Ota and Haru are sirens/merpeople. 

They have the ability to shapeshift into humans and humanoid forms. If they touch extreme heat or water (respectively) part of their true species will show.

Dragons and mermaids get burned when in physical contact due to their opposite environments. The two races just naturally avoid each other.

Ota and Haru's parents died from colliding with a sinking ship, being crushed by its debris in the end. Because of this, Haru despises humans so much that he's always against going near land.

Ota on the other hand never blamed the humans as it was an accident caused by natural but unfortunate events. In fact, she's very curious about human land and would often sneak off to explore.

The dragon race is a rare and glorious one surrounded by gold and riches, so naturally they are all high and mighty, full of prestige. Greedy. Ryu is no different, and has much more of an attitude than his human counterpart does.

One day Ota was singing by the beach at midnight, something she usually does. Ryu, who had also sneaked off in the middle of the night, had come across her, and was naturally drawn into her voice because of the siren's ability. Ota isn't aware about the power of her voice. Sirens are far rarer than the usual merpeople.

Charmed by the cute girl and her beautiful voice, Ryu decided that he wanted her for himself.
