Climate of Missouri

Missouri's geography varies widely across the state. North of the Missouri River, the land is gently rolling with fertile plains and well-watered prairie country, reflecting its glacial history. South of the river lies the Ozark Mountains, dominating a large portion of the state's landscape. With the exception of the extreme southeastern corner, including the Bootheel, and areas along the western boundary, this region is characterized by rough and hilly terrain, deep valleys, swift streams, and abundant caves and natural springs. Elevations range from 1,000 to 1,400 feet (300 to 425 meters) above sea level, although near the western border, elevations rarely exceed 800 feet (250 meters). Taum Sauk Mountain, located about 90 miles (145 km) south of St. Louis, stands as the state's highest point, reaching 1,772 feet (540 meters) above sea level. In far southeastern Missouri, a part of the alluvial plain of the Mississippi River features elevations below 500 feet (150 meters). Near the southwestern edge of this region lies the state's lowest point, where the St. Francis River flows into Arkansas at an elevation of approximately 230 feet (70 meters).

The St. Francois Mountains in the eastern Ozarks are characterized by igneous granite and rhyolite outcroppings, adding a unique geological feature to Missouri's landscape. In contrast, the remainder of the state is primarily underlain by sedimentary rocks, including limestones, dolomites, sandstone, and shale.
Missouri is generally considered tectonically stable, with only occasional small earth tremors occurring, particularly in the southeastern portion of the state. However, there remains a possibility of another devastating earthquake similar to those centered at New Madrid in 1811–12. While the likelihood of such an event is uncertain, the potential impact underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring and preparedness efforts in the region.
Missouri's diverse geography and soil conditions facilitate farming across all its counties, although the Ozark Mountain region primarily supports livestock and poultry farming due to its thin soil. The northern part of the state benefits from rich glacial and loessial soils, contributing to its agricultural productivity. Additionally, the extensive alluvial soils in the bottomlands along rivers and streams further enhance farming potential in Missouri. The Missouri River, which drains most of the state, plays a significant role in its drainage system.
Artificial lakes, created by damming rivers and streams, are a notable feature of Missouri's landscape. The Lake of the Ozarks, formed by the Bagnell Dam on the Osage River, stands out as one of the largest man-made lakes in the country, offering both hydroelectric power generation and recreational opportunities.
Missouri's climate is influenced by a combination of cold Canadian air, warm Gulf of Mexico air, and drier southwest air. Summer winds typically blow from the south and southwest, while winter winds originate from the north and northwest. Precipitation, crucial for crops, varies across the state, ranging from around 35 inches (890 mm) in the north to nearly 50 inches (1,270 mm) in the extreme southeast. Missouri experiences about 25 tornadoes annually on average, owing to its location on the edge of Tornado Alley.

In terms of plant and animal life, Missouri boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna. While forests cover about one-third of the state, much of the original prairie land has been converted for cultivation. Nonetheless, efforts by governmental and nongovernmental organizations have preserved scattered prairie remnants. Missouri's state parks harbor numerous plant and animal species, including over 100 species of fish, 200 species of birds, and various mammals. Historically, large animals like elk, deer, bison, and bears were abundant, but their populations declined due to European settlement and agricultural expansion. However, conservation efforts, such as restocking programs, have led to the recovery of certain species, including deer, which now number close to a million in the state. Additionally, Missouri is home to a small population of bears that migrated from Arkansas, although hunting them is prohibited.

Saw that you've asked for nonfiction recs on twt and i have some!
Ryszard Kapuscinski's 'Soccer Wars' is a collection of his reports from various anticolonialist revolutions in the 60s (he was the 1st foreign correspondent from the Eastern Bloc to go to many of those countries)—very interesting, sort of gonzo journalism.
David Grann's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' about a conspiracy to murder prominent members of the Osage people who had rights to oil-rich land in the 1920s—technically true crime, but gives a good insight into US treatment of indigenous people. Scorsese is adapting it into a movie, and there's also a podcast.
Philip Blomm's 'Vertigo Years: Europe 1900-1914' and 'Fracture: Life and Culture in the West 1914-1938' - a sort of cultural history overview of early 20th century Europe, a bit dry at times but lots of cool anecdotes and tidbits about everyday life.
Also, Stella Tillyard's Aristocrats, about the scandalous Lennox sisters from the 18th century - that's still on my TBR so can't vouch for it, but I think it might be the closest to what you're after. I've heard good things about it and there was a fun BBC miniseries based on it in the 90s.
thanks so much!! these all sound amazing and anything about cultural history especially is right up my alley <3

Rudbeckia Revolution
Be realistic, demand the impossible.
Che Guevara
I am waging war against frustration, and impatience is an obstacle. My struggle may take two or three years before there is a measurable outcome. This year’s brutal heat and drought nearly ground to a halt any remaining enthusiasm for my garden. While the president fantasized in August about buying Greenland, I dreamed of a cooler global climate and a little rain. Nothing worked. Greenland’s ice sheets continued to melt, and central Kentucky had the hottest and driest September on record.
So, I’m done with our garden, at least, until the early-flowering, squirrel-resistant Crocus tomasinianus hits full stride next year. At the first sight of thousands of lavender-colored March bloomers, on the nearby Ursuline Campus in Louisville, I hope my gardening mojo returns. In the meantime, I needed an autumn pick me up. I decided to launch the Rudbeckia Revolution.
But let’s be honest.
Rudbeckia triloba
I am a little long in the tooth to start a revolution by myself, so I enlisted an alley-wise, 24-year-old who came highly recommended. He had previously aced the rigorous Seed Bomber segment of the Guerilla Gardening Aptitude Test. My accomplice’s love for his garden and his will for a little tomfoolery caught my attention.
He planted his first garden this spring in a community plot in Louisville’s Germantown, while continuing to teach English online to Chinese kids. During his inaugural season, he navigated the normal ups and downs encountered along gardening’s learning curve and never flinched. (I am protecting the young man’s identity so that any urban seed-bombing in the future can remain discreet and, perhaps, even beneficial and pretty.)
Chasmanthium latifolium
We deployed seeds in lieu of bullets in two Louisville alleys on November 1st. We were caught on one site, but I explained we were sowing flower seeds.  A quick reprieve, and an endorsement, was granted. My comrade’s seed-sower disguise might have appeared alarming but he’s a good-hearted Lone Ranger, not a bandit.
Our ammo was gifted by Jelitto Perennial Seeds. Jelitto offers the best selection and quality of perennial seeds in the world. (I’m a little biased. I worked with Jelitto for 22 years. When I retired two years ago, I was given a generous lifetime allowance for perennial seeds instead of a gold watch. Who needs a gold watch when you can have all the perennial seeds you want?)
Cleaned seed of Rudbeckia triloba.
The Rudbeckia Revolution has modest goals. We don’t envision elegant plantings resembling Piet Oudolf’s High Line design in New York. There will be no fussy alley coddling in Louisville. Imagine our small-time seed bombing as the scruffy Low Line.
The revolution’s goal is simple: We are crossing our fingers that seeds germinate and a few dozen plants of black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia triloba) and northern sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) will establish in sun to semi-shade, in hard-packed, but well-drained clay soils.
You’re wondering: Why didn’t we seed more species? This is a skirmish, not an invasion.
Seed bombing tip: Sow perennials seeds on top of the surface in autumn. Cover with a mixed grade of fine and gritty sand. No need to scratch the soil’s surface. The sand will absorb moisture from the earth and germination will be enhanced by moist and cooler conditions in autumn and winter.
If our small battles succeed, and there is no guarantee they will, a few plants may eventually self-sow and compete with crab grass, wintercreeper, hackberry roots, poke weed, lambs quarters, foxtail, autumn clematis, paulownia and tree of heaven seedlings, and whatever worrisome uncertainties global warming throws at our hidden alleys.
I’m not sure, even if the seed-bombed alleys flourish, that anyone will notice these new pollinators and caterpillar hosts. One of our battlegrounds, in the Crescent Hill neighborhood, sprinkled with garbage cans, has a tree canopy of filtered light. Dog shit is ignored, a token of the bygone era when dogs wandered free and crapped everywhere. Deer and coyotes, Louisville’s recent arrivals, now roam with rats and cats. This alley is nothing like the closely monitored neighborhood front yard landscape, where deer feast on hostas and a security camera occasionally tags a naughty dog owner who won’t pick up pooch’s shit.
The second alley, downtown, has more sun, weeds and litter, plus a marvelous Catalpa and Osage orange, warehouses and an abandoned homeless camp.
Both alleys are passageways to a diverse and mongrel ecology.
Jean-Francois Millet’s The Sower. Walters Museum photo.
We are not overreaching. The Rudbeckia Revolution’s handbook states plainly: “A few survivors may self-sow or not.” This is not an ugly, in-your-face fight for hearts and minds.
My comrade and I don’t expect to save the world; we are only buying time until next spring.
¡Hasta la victoria siempre!

#OKLA #TERRORIST #TERRITORY> The FBI arrested 23-year-old Jerry Drake Varnell at 1 a.m. on Aug. 12 after he allegedly attempted to detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van he had parked in an alley next to BancFirst in downtown Oklahoma City. Why is White Male Terrorism seemingly inseparable from Oklahoma State and Territory History? Is it because outlaws have always been attracted to The Red Dirt State? Is it because of an Outlaw attitude our local city, county and state institutions have inherited from the most lawless in America settling here? Can correlations be formed in the creation of the State of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Laws, Genocide of Natives (Osage Tribe) and Negros (Black Wall Street) and an influx of current Militia leaders and Organizations fueled by the example of Timothy McVeigh? We have had personal contact with these types in Oklahoma and their motivations are many...but they all truly believe in White Supremacy. From the Governor getting rid of Affirmative Action to the Prisons getting rid of Women and Black Men to Terrorists targeting the buildings in Oklahoma...there is a Stench of White Supremacy that seeks to shake our souls in fear like Thunder and Tornadoes.

Q&A #48
Today among other things the curse of the were-bimbo drider, being a prisoner in Whorelock’s, seemingly incompatible traits, kunoichi balance concerns, and my habit of previewing later content in assignment results.
valhallaimmortan: So is it possible to get your slavers to get certain traits? Like build a Infiltration or a Diplomacy slaver specifically? Because I've been trying to build a perfect group of Infiltrators, but they always get traits more suited for marauders. I've been playing the golems and I'm trying to be far more lenient because I don't have a encampment of super troops anymore (until I get a masterwork smith consistently) but I want to get the Keldan for my encampment because I need a biomancer...
Yes, I’d say that’s possible with both the results of certain assignments and the traits available from levelling up. A Keldan slaver is also recruitable via the result of on assignment.
Anonymous: bimboborn anon here, present every time she became available again. It was almost always, one time she got a full-moon text blurb, just that the away tag got removed from her name and that's it, also no changes ever to her looks or traits etc. maybe I broke it by getting a bimbo drider that then also grew a massive dick or something, I dunno.
Oh that she got the full moon blurb is very interesting as to the potential cause, so was she also Were, or did you have any others in the encampment with that trait?
Anonymous: Thats a bit early to ask, since you are still moving things from rags to twine, but in WR being held as a prisoner is actually significant part of gameplay, do you have any plans to rework it from veing just "N amount of events with you happening randomly till you run away" to some kind of gameplay behind it, like training of slaves in No Haven but reversed?
That was planned however the conversion put an indefinite hold on it along with so many other things like the quests for the Bonds of Insanity/Tangle Infestation. When I get to it I’m sure I’ll flesh it out with some more structure.
Anonymous: Does slaver supposed to be Heroic and Unscrupulous at the same time?
It's me again. Sneaky and clumsy at the same time? Is it by design?
I’d say both of those are okay. Heroic in the game is less about automatically being a noble hero but being incredibly brave and willing to get stuck in regardless of personal danger, and so Unscrupulous with that is your basic reaving bastard warrior who goes into battle only for the violence, rapine and loot.
Sneaky and Clumsy is someone who tries and wants to be all sneaky rogue... it’s just they have a tendency to sometimes bump into things and mess it all up which is why they’ll often cancel each other out.
Anonymous: as a followup for this: "Is it supposed to possible to recruit 2 unique slavers? Tried to pick Ogre Former Warlord and Osage, only Ogre shows up" point cost for kunoichi girl is probably too low now that aspects are in
I’ll look at it. She is still a bimbo and as a unique takes twice as long to get their first level up as a normal slaver would.
Anonymous: so, how does your game actually handle backwards compatibility? cause I just tried loading a 0.7521 into 0.7551 and slave names turned into "slave XX" while slavers turned into "slaver XX" after they return from an assignment or I talk to them they appear to be normal again but then a LOT of fishiness on assignments happens.
Normally I’d say it’s RAGS so sure you can try it, off chance it might be fine, but I wouldn’t risk it myself. This transition though? Will absolutely break things due to the overhaul as so many variables have been entirely replaced that there’s no chance it’s going to work.
The game still is in beta though once I finally get the mechanics completely nailed down it will be a lot more likely to work.
Anonymous: imgur /a/o7G1G not sure if you borked something or I'm just amazing at breaking your game, either way here you go.
I think it can be both! But yeah thanks for the spot :)
Anonymous: imgur /a/u00tP is it intentional that I can't change camp-assigned slaves bondage?
That’s correct as there are certain bondage options that would prevent them from doing their camp-assigned roles.
Anonymous: imgur /a/PQVQU no clue who that Elanya Loreborn is, but that sounds like a prime secret crit thing for hidden worship recruitment for a corruptor/faith frozen lady, afaik there is no "reliable" way of recruiting one yet, like keldan alley etc
She’s one of the uniques... though I have no idea why she’s being checked there. Thanks for the spot, and I’m sure I’ll get round to doing one in future.
Anonymous: imgur /a/iqj3z seems that the slaver is drawing its name from the campbitch, or there is some other issue
I’d noticed that one on occasion myself. Still puzzling out what’s going on with that one.
Anonymous: imgur /a/7ASm5 is the suggestion system broken or is something else happening there?
Looks to me like an issue with the specific assignment. WIll take a look at it.
Anonymous: when you capture an orc from the sissy farm it says something about other plans, is there a way to talk the orc into working for you or is it a soon(tm) thing or something else entirely?
That’s planned for the next update proper with a path to make a slave into a slaver.
Anonymous: mgur /a/0jZ1E number 3 (the one with the red underline) can't be levelled
So it said she had a level up from going to Inexperienced to Competent but she doesn’t have the options or what?
valhallaimmortan: I sent a group of ogre futa's on the coastal corsair mission and my character who is a ogre themselves got the positive effect of being a lamia... that just screams bug at me. And also, on the Keldan character I got a name bug but I just think her parents were jackasses Lady Lady Denisaa van der rijke... And now for the ogres I'm going out to recruit more troops seeing as a cook, a smith 3 warriors and a human scout won't really work out when the trumpet sounds and my troops become prisoners....
Will check them out, cheers.
