Lands of Orsterra
For my own convenience, I’ve compiled some of the basic information about each region in Orsterra! These are coming from canon game facts, either taken from in-game quests/inquiries or from the JP Octopath website
We get a lot of kingdom names here and since I can’t read Japanese, spellings vary / spoilers!
The Sunlands
Ruled by the Kingdom of Triberia
Kings are chosen at the Great Assembly, by the vote of the other chiefs
100 years ago, the twelve clans warred against each other for control of a small oasis
The Yashum Clan ended the strife by uniting the clans
The current king, King Khalim, and his daughter, Gloria, hail from the Yashum Clan
-
The Highlands
Currently not ruled by any kingdom, unstable with strife
Was controlled by the Kingdom of Hornburg for 200 years until its downfall 8 years ago
The kingdom of Hornburg was founded by Beowulf, second prince of Ferien (which then ruled the Cliftlands and Riverlands), as a reward for his successful conquests
Last ruler was King Alfred, who was slain by Erhardt during the country’s civil war
Currently, the remaining lords are locked in a power struggle for the region
Known for: dairy farming, major paper/timber production, book archive
Also mentions of the Ventus Dynasty which had ruled in Everhold 300 years ago
Leading up to his death, Ventus III had introduced several reforms that brought a prosperous age to the kingdom under his son’s rule
After his son died, the kingdom fell into civil war
Two brothers (to put into perspective, Ventus III’s grandsons) fought over the throne; one the son of the queen, the other the bastard son of the king’s mistress
the illegitimate son was older and better of the two, but “only true blood matters, and the throne was his brother’s” (Ventus the Third quest line)
Simeon’s the younger brother who won the war
-
The Riverlands
Ruled by the Riven/Reeven Kingdom
Formerly was a part of the Kingdom of Ferien, until 150 years ago Ferien split
Fertile land, agricultural goldmine
Rivers are vital to trade industry
Church of the Sacred Flame has large influence (Saintsbridge)
10-12 years ago the Great Pestilence spread through the Riverlands
10 years ago Alfyn got sick (side note: Graham was 24 when he treated Alfyn)
The sickness was spread via the river (based on inquiry; it’s not explicitly labeled the Pestilence, but I think it’s likely that this is how it spread; the disease consumed all of the Riverlands, after all)
Same inquiry implies a significant number of deaths were from lack of a clean water supply; deaths from sickness and dehydration
Riverford had several disasters: within the last 27 years, its river has flooded, fires ravaged the town, their lord was overthrown
Currently ruled by King Richard
-
The Woodlands
Not a unified country, but autonomous villages and cities
Bordered by the Verdant Deep (the sea) on the west
Home to the Darkwood tribe and remnants of the Greenwood tribe (though the people of the Greenwood tribe were banished by the Darkwood; see: Ashlan)
Land appears to be shared with local lords (see: Lord Ciaran in H’aanit’s chapter 1)
-
The Cliftlands
Ruled by the Kingdom of Edras
Formerly was part of the Kingdom of Ferien, but likely became Edras after the Ferien princes’ battle over the throne 150 years ago, which had created the Riverland’s Kingdom of Riven/Reeven
Economy fueled by smithing industry and abundance in rock salt for trade
Home to wealthy nobles and hotspot for merchants
However, there is a stark divide between the wealthy and impoverished
Kingdom of Edras’ currency -- leaves -- are the major currency of Orsterra
Currently ruled by King Elman
-
The Frostlands
Autonomous cities
Home to Flamesgrace, where the main cathedral for the Order of the Sacred Flame resides
Thought of as the land where Aelfric descended
When Grandport invaded the Flatlands 200 years ago, the Church of the Sacred Flame allied with the Flatlands tribes to repel them; in thanks, the Flatlands tribes (Wald Kingdom) awarded them Flamesgrace*
-
The Flatlands
Ruled by the Wald/Wolde Kingdom
Home to the Royal Academy, where scholars study
In the past, was made up of eight tribes that constantly fought
The tribes united 200 years ago when the Kingdom of Grandport invaded
With the help of the Church of the Sacred Flame, they repelled Grandport and united into the Kingdom of Wald
Currently ruled by King Othred II, to be succeeded by Princess Mary
In the present, the Royal Academy seems to be spearheading medical research and treatment
-
The Coastlands
Autonomous city-states
Formerly ruled by the Kingdom of Grandport which fell after they lost a war to the Flatlands 200 years ago
Fishing industry and trade thrive here
Significant damage from pirates/pillagers/private vessels
Often trades with the continent to the east (that we know nothing about)
The seas in the east are described as stormy
-
*unsure about this translation, but it makes sense to me since Atlasdam and Flamesgrace are very close to each other
I’m still going through the game and looking through JP content, but here’s what I’ve got so far! This might get updated as I find/amend things.
