JEZEBEL, which premiered this month in 1938, is an example of the genius of costume design in black and white film. #OrryKelly needed to design a gown for #BetteDavis that looked red onscreen. But because true red often looks lighter in black and white, the actual dress was made in bronze satin. Orr-Kelly is little known here in Australia, a boy from Kiama on the NSW coast who won 3 Oscars for his amazing costumes.  

The exhibition coincides with the release of a feature-length documentary Women He’s Undressed (2015), screening at ACMI. Orry-Kelly’s rediscovered memoir, a treasure trove of Hollywood memories and secrets, is available for purchase through the ACMI Shop.

Checked out the small but interesting exhibition yesterday - ORRY KELLY Dressing Hollywood (an Australian costume designer) at ACMI. There are a few actual costumes on show, some film and lots of illustrations. It doesn’t take much time and best of all it’s FREE.
