WHAT HAPPENS IN WAIT FOR ME STAGING WISE (BESIDES THE LAMPS) AND WHAT HAPPENS IN IF ITS TRUE

Wait for Me: So this is probably the most ~*~iconique~*~ number, it’s been in the ads for practically every production, and yes there are the lamps but I want to talk about WHY the lamps are so awesome.

After Eurydice has walked offstage (literally disappearing into the spotlight) at the end of “Gone, I’m Gone,” Orpheus returns looking for her and finds only Hermes just milling around, counting the coins in the sack that Eurydice dropped her “ticket” into. After he convinces Hermes that he really does have the conviction to follow her to Hadestown, Hermes starts “Wait for Me” with his hand mic, mimicking an announcer on a train, as the Fates appear with the spotlights that they hook to the ceiling wires. Orpheus wanders his way to the center (that dual-head mic!) as if he’s been traversing through woods, and when he’s there the lights are attached and ready to be swung in the first position: back and forth.

The reason for the swinging lights? Orpheus rocks his whole body forward in time with them, and with the rest of the theatre dark, it creates the illusion that he’s moving down a tunnel with the lights flickering past him.

Like…it’s straight up just an optical effect that does not register on film or in photos, making it look like he’s moving forward when he’s isn’t at all. It was REALLY cool. 

Look at the Fates and Persephone now in the bg, with those leather coats to make them a temporary ensemble! After the first chorus, Orpheus wanders around the center space, bumping into these coat-wearing Hadestown workers, who give him dirty looks as he tries to appear inconspicuous but is totally lost (”And don’t look no one in the eye. This town will try to suck you dry…”). By the second chorus, they’ve wound up back at the lights again, and this time they swing in a circular motion around Orpheus, so now the light effect becomes dizzying and disorienting as he’s trying to find Eurydice. By the time the song ends, Orpheus has fled offstage away from the suspicious citizens. 

If It’s True: After being shoved around in “Papers” and told to give up by the Fates in “Nothing Changes,” Orpheus slowly pulls himself to his feet and picks up his guitar again. Eurydice looks piteously at him, but keeps her distance, and Hermes narrates his choice to try pleading his case as he hands Orpheus the mic stand.

You can see Persephone in the back there, who is becoming more and more moved as song goes on, and god Damon was just RAW in this. He’s addressing the audience for this number, because as you know now we’re the citizens of Hadestown. When Persephone is shaken enough, she crosses through the center space after Damon is finished (”She went to find that mighty king…”) and prepares to deliver her support of Eurydice’s release in “How Long.”

Favourite thing about them: His LOVE for Eurydice!!! His devotion!!! To the end of time!!! To the end of the earth!!!!! Now THAT’S the type of man I wanna marry I’m tearing up.

Least favourite thing about them: I don’t like how NYTW!Orpheus was too busy working on his song to help Eurydice like… not starve and/or freeze to death lol. But NT!Orpheus? A perfect boii. Perhaps a touch too naive, but a sweetie nonetheless.

Favourite line: ALL HIS LINES but if I had to pick one… “And the sun rose and fell in his chest when he held her, he felt the earth moving without and within” :’)

brOTP: Orpheus x Persephone! They can bond over how much they hate Hades lol

Random headcanon: During the springtime, he makes flower crowns on the reg. He makes one for Eurydice one day, who has never seen a flower crown in her life, and she is absolutely delighted.

Unpopular opinion: Not only is Reeve a good Orpheus, but Reeve is the BEST Orpheus you can’t change my mind.

there are so many layers to this. how often does a person come up with an idea for Dave Malloy to write a musical? a musical specifically about Dorian Gray? and how many people tweet him about it? the conclusion is clearly that we are the same person.
