The heron, a symbol of a positive message, from my new book, Ornithography: An Illustrated Guide to Bird Lore & Symbolism 🪶 While working on this book, I became increasingly concerned that I hadn’t seen my heron friend on my daily walks for a few weeks. He’d been a comforting presence in my life, a truly beautiful bird I looked forward to seeing daily. When I got to the heron illustration, I left my desk and took my dog out for another walk, and finally saw my heron friend again! It was like he was waiting for us. There is beauty and magic all around us, and birding is one way I like to celebrate that. Swipe to see my buddy in all his glory! And find my book through your favorite bookstore.

Photos by @xavibou. Xavi Bou's "Ornithographies" focus on birds, capturing in a single time frame, the shapes they generate when flying, making visible the invisible. The series was inspired out of concern for capturing those unnoticed moments and from the interest in questioning the limits of human perception. Ornitographies is a balance between art and science; a nature-based dissemination project and a visual poetry exercise but above all, an invitation to perceive the world with the same curious and innocent look of the child we once were. The works here are: Ornithography #128 Ornithography #247 Ornithography #221 Ornithography #169 I created @vital.impacts last year as a platform to inspire curiosity and wonder and as a way to give back to the people protecting our beautiful planet. I hope you will spend some time exploring the work of the extraordinary photographers in our Winter Collection. #vitalimpacts #environmental #conservation #birds #flight #ornithography #birdsinflight #ornithologie #ornitologia #ornithology https://www.instagram.com/p/ClzeNohMTbC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ornithography: An Illustrated Guide to Bird Lore & Symbolism (Volume 2) by Jessica Roux
US pub date - 9/24/24
I have read a couple of previous titles by Jessica Roux and always been wildly impressed by her beautiful illustrations, and when I saw this new title, I knew immediately that I wanted to read it.
After moving to the country (hence my blog name, The Bucolic Bookshelf), I’ve really appreciated seeing, and hearing, a ton of animals visit (or live on) our property - we have a resident chipmunk who’s lived under our front steps for the entirety of our living here, who is often seen sitting on our the steps, chirping away, we have deer who walk around our front and back yards sometimes after coming from across the street, where they live in the protected land, we have bunnies every spring, a woodchuck moved into our shed, we have teeny frogs who serenade us some evenings, and so many feathered friends, including some that I’d never seen in person before (owls, woodpeckers, wild turkeys).
I loved being able to look through this, matching some of our visitors to the gorgeous illustrations, meaning, and lore of many birds in the book.
Ornithography is an excellent choice for any bird lovers in your life.
Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the PDF

trick or treat !
Happy Halloween!! In my local antiques shop, there are a million tiny corner 'rooms' blocked off by big shelves, and I once got trapped in one because there were four very old gentlemen examining canes blocking my path back into the store proper. I decided to wait them out rather than try to get them to scoot, and as I stood around in my little corner, I idly picked up the smallest knickknacks nearby and examined them more closely, and I discovered this!
It's less than two inches tall, and very heavy for its size, and I was happy enough with the heft and feel of it even before I turned it over and realized that it's secretly a pencil sharpener!!! Exceedingly cool
#Happy Halloween!#asks#maverick-ornithography#it turned out to be a really /good/ pencil sharpener too#I love it very much

trick or treat!!!!! very looking forward to the music
omg hi hello!!!
in true Halloween fashion you're the first person to come to the door by 9pm so I am giving you a handful of treats ahaha
first up, a recent favorite — morbid obsessions by we are the union. this one kinda knocked me over the head when I first heard it so I keep coming back to it. it's really good, though a bit heavy
YouTube | Spotify | Bandcamp
next — ms. me by bruce lee band. (as in miss me) another favorite and eminently repeatable. definitely a candidate to make a seamless 10 minute edit of ahaha
YouTube | Spotify | Bandcamp
and finally — ghost town by the holophonics (a cover of the original by the specials). the original is a ska song too, but this one's a bit more active and more explicitly Halloween themed :D gotta keep it topical!
YouTube | Spotify | Bandcamp
thank you so much for stopping by!! I hope you enjoy the music!

I got back from Powell’s books listening to the amazing artist Jessica Roux talk about her newest book Ornithography and illustrated guide to bird lore & symbolism, and I felt the need to sketch birds!! So here is a pigeon, cardinal, and a bluejay dripping in jewels.
When I was in Arizona this past may I had someone ask if I had and pigeon art and in Seattle I was asked if I had any blue Jay art so I’m filling those needs that people mentioned 😁
