*Fake It Until You Make It Real*

This can be very emotional and even triggering to some people however there is nothing bad that happens except a child having an emotional reaction to a shitty situation.

Sunday morning Harry woke up early but had taken one look at Louis curled up against his chest and had promptly pushed any thoughts of leaving the bed out of his head. As if sensing Harry's change of plans Louis curled up closer to him in his sleep. Harry kept am arm around Louis' waist as he grabbed his phone and lowered the brightness down so it didn't wake Louis up. He had a message from Gem and when he opened it he saw screenshots of his and Louis' social media profiles and a message under them.

Harry shook his head but knew his sister was right. It was time to make it social media official and so he headed to Facebook and updated his relationship status to engaged and sent a relationship request to Louis. "Yeah but Louis looked comfortable when I saw you two so I didn't want to wake him."

"Harry gets out of bed every morning without waking me. I'm sure he would have managed." Louis said sending a glare towards Harry as he headed into the kitchen.

"He doesn't like it when I leave the bed. Says I take all the heat with me and it forces him out of bed." Harry told them as he sat in the oversized chaise while Louis headed into the kitchen.

"So we never did get to talk about the wedding. Have you picked a location? The flowers? The time? The honeymoon? Y'know Brazil is beautiful I know you loved it last time we visited as a family. Remember you wanted to stay at the pink place."

"I'm pretty sure Harry wanted to live there when he was twenty." Gemma said

"Louis and I have decided to take the kids on a holiday with us, a family vacation. As soon as the judge approves it which my lawyers says there isn't any reason why he wouldn't, I'll get it ran by the school. I think we've decided on Orlando there's Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, and other big things to do with kids and such. Then during spring break or the summer holidays we'll take a week away together somewhere else."

"I haven't agreed to that yet." Louis said from the kitchen

"I'll hogtie you." Harry told him, "Don't worry I'll have him in a hut on a beach without kids eventually. Or in a hotel right beside the Iguazu Falls in Brazil or Argentina."

"Or a summer trip with the kids." Louis said

"Or a private trip with a promise of loud uninterrupted-"

"Harold." Louis warned making their families laugh when Harry put his hands up in surrender.

"I was going to say playtime."

"That's even worse."

"How about the hokey pokey in our birthday suit?" Louis laughed loudly

"If you have to pokey the hokey then you're clearly doing it wrong Harry." Anne said

"Maybe we like to pokey the hokey mother." Harry said throwing a balled up piece of paper at her as Louis walked into the room shaking his head. He sat across Harry's lap so his back was pressed against the arm of the chaise. His plate of food piled high sat on his lap and his mug of tea was set on the coffee table.

"For the record if you ever poke me we're getting a divorce." Louis told him

"You ruin all of my fun. You won't have sex with me with our mothers here and you won't let me play hokey pokey with you naked. Next you'll be telling me I can't wear a lace teddy around the house with the kids home."

"Absolutely not." Louis said shaking his head as he cut into the pancake, "at least not while the kids are home." Harry laughed

"You're restricting my teddy wearing time. Geesh. I think I purposed too soon." Louis stabbed a piece of pancake and offered it to Harry watching as he leaned forwards and ate the piece off the fork.

After breakfast Louis was in the kitchen with Anne and Jay as they cleaned up from yesterday and breakfast. A loud banging came from the door causing them to jump from the suddenness.

"Are you guys expecting company?" Anne asked

"Not that I know of." Louis said as he dried his hands and headed to the front door. Louis unlocked the bolt and pulled the door open. He pulled his eyebrows together confused when he saw a police officer, Hannah, and her boyfriend standing there.

"Are you Mr. Styles?"

"No, but I am his fiancé why?"

"Can we come in?" Louis hesitated looking back for Harry but he still wasn't inside so he nodded and allowed them into the entry way closing the door behind them, "Does your fiancé still have his daughter here?"

"Yes of course. He has her for the week per her mother's....request."

"That's a lie I told him he could have her for Halloween, but he had to bring her back home Halloween night. I gave him last night out of kindness, but now I still don't have my daughter and I'm starting to worry about her. I have texts between him and I saying he wouldn't give her back. It's why I called the police." Hannah said tearfully, Louis laughed unable to help himself.

"First off Harry has it on video of you telling him to keep her for the week or not at all. Secondly Harry hasn't had his phone on him all morning. I do because he asked me to go get for him from the bedroom but then he went outside with the kids so he never got it from me. Thirdly any text Harry has gotten I haven't responded to or looked at because it's none of my business. Fourth call the number you were texting because I guarantee it won't ring Harry's phone."

"Hey what's going on?" Harry asked jogging up to them, "I thought you were going to America this week?" He said looking at Hannah.

"Mr. Styles, Miss. Carpenter claims you were suppose to take your daughter back home last night and that you are threatening her through texts of keeping your daughter from her."

"I don't even have my phone on me and Hannah and I don't text. Everything is on the phone or in person. Our lawyers demanded it since anyone could be Hannah in my phone and anyone could be me in hers. Any communications we have is to be recorded and sent to our respective lawyers. This isn't the first time Hannah has tried to charge me with parental kidnapping."

"I'm going to have to make sure that's the truth. Hand over your phone."

"Wait you're not even going to call the number she was texting. Make sure it was his phone in the first place." Louis asked the officer paused and looked at Louis before he turned to Hannah who looked offended by just the idea of it.

"No we are here to get my daughter from Harry and take her home not for you to turn around and accuse me just because my ex boyfriend's fuck toy spoke. Besides he shouldn't even be involved in this conversation."

"Louis is my fiancé and has every right to be here. So unless Daniel is leaving, Louis stays. Look I can show you the video where Hannah told me I have her for the week." Harry said but the officer shook his head

"It won't matter. She has custody and you have no legal visitation or right to have her in your house if the mother doesn't want her here. Unfortunately that means she can press charges for parental kidnapping if you don't let her take her daughter." The officer said looking like he didn't want to be the one telling Harry those words, "I'm really sorry but I'm going to have to ask you to go get your daughter and let her mother take her home."

"Okay." Harry said softly

"Okay?" Louis said shocked

"Louis please. If I fight or argue it can look bad on me. The judge won't look at the body cam footage and see a father wanting to see his daughter for more than a day, he's going to see a big man yelling at, not only a woman, but the mother of his child. That is all he is going to see. That is all they ever see because she has sob stories prepared to make me look bad. I have lost a lot of cases because I fought too hard, because I raised my voice, because she cried in my presence. I can't do anything except comply I can't have a parental kidnapping charge while fighting for visitation." Harry said gently, "can you please just go get Maddie for me?" Louis wanted to argue, wanted to yell and curse at Hannah because how dare she stand there smirking while she took Harry's daughter away just because. How dare she call herself a mother. But Louis nodded pressing a quick kiss to Harry's cheek and headed to the glass sliding doors watching Maddie and Freddie running and laughing on the playset.

"Maddison can you come here for a minute?" Louis asked just loud enough to be heard over the laughter filling the backyard. Maddison and Freddie looked his way before they ran up to him with large smiles and red faces, "come on Maddison, Freddie stay out here with Zayn alright?" Louis said as he felt Zayn squeeze past him with a reassuring squeeze to his shoulder.

"Come on Freddie bet you can't run faster than me." Louis owed Zayn a nice dinner as he watched Freddie run off yelling after him. He gently led Maddison inside the house and closed the glass door and led her to where Harry was with Hannah, Daniel, and the officer.

"I will have these screenshots and body camera sent to your respective lawyers so they each have a copy for the court meeting." The officer was saying

"Thank you." Harry said shaking his hand before he turned to them, "hey princess you have to go with your mom."

"What? Why?" Maddie asked looking between Harry and Hannah, "you promised. You promised I'd stay with Daddy all week." Maddie said looking at Hannah

"Yes well I've changed my mind now come on we need to go. We still have to pick up the cookies from the shop for career day tomorrow. Remember."

"You're not going to career day tomorrow?" Louis asked looking at Harry who clearly knew nothing about it.

"Mom says daddy has to work." Maddie told Louis

"I'm off tomorrow. What's career day?"

"It doesn't matter Daniel is going. He is with her everyday after all. Much more her dad than you are. Come on Maddie we are leaving." Hannah said grabbing Maddie's wrist only for Maddie to yank it out of her grip.

"YOU LIED! YOU SAID YOU CALLED DADDY AND HE SAID HE COULDN'T COME! IM NOT LEAVING! IT'S NOT FAIR!" Maddie yelled

"You are leaving right now come on." Hannah snapped grabbing Maddie's arm again.

"NO! NO NO NO NO NO! NO!" Maddie screamed fighting out of her mother's grip, "DADDY! DADDY PLEASE! SHE SAID A WEEK! SHE PROMISED!"

Louis had tears in his eyes as he watched this beautiful little girl fall apart in a way only a child in a such a bad situation could. She was crying, screaming, kicking, flailing, doing everything she could to fight off Hannah. Louis looked at Harry and could see the pain in his face as he tried to make her let go of him when she hugged his waist begging him to keep her.

"Maddison that is enough. Stand up and let's go." Hannah said

"I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!" Maddie screamed as she was dragged out of the house, "DADDY! DADDY PLEASE! SHE PROMISED A WEEK! SHE PROMISED! DADDY! LET ME GO! LOULOU! LOUIS! LOUIS DON'T LET HER TAKE ME! LOUIS PLEASE!" Louis took a step forward fully prepared to go to jail to stop Maddie's pain but a strong arm wrapped around his waist and kept him there.

"Harry let me go. Harry let go of me." Louis hissed pushing his arm off of him and running outside, he pulled Maddie into tight loving hug before Hannah could put her in the car, "It'll be okay. Hush darling it'll be okay. Relax. Deep breaths. There you go. Easy breathing...there you go." Louis whispered gently as he rubbed her shaking back.

"She promised. She promised a week."

"I know but it's not your daddy's fault, sweetie. Now tell me what you want your daddy to bake for your class."

"C-C-C-Cookie dough cup-cupcakes." Maddie said between sniffles, hiccups, and heavy breaths from her crying and screams.

"Okay. I'll tell him. He loves you and so do I. It'll be okay." Louis stood up and kissed her head then without even turning towards Hannah he headed back inside the house.

Harry was sitting on the floor crying just as hard as Maddie had been a few moments ago. Louis slid into his lap and hugged his neck feeling his arms wrap around his waist and his sobs wet the sweater Louis was wearing.

"Don't you ever hold me back when my child yells for me like that again." Louis said as gently and a softly as he could so Harry knew he wasn't mad at him. Harry didn't respond, not that Louis expected him to, he just sat there holding Louis as he cried and Louis sat there holding Harry rubbing his back and trying to do whatever he could to soothe him. They sat there well over an hour before Harry stood up and headed upstairs with a soft click of a door closing. Only then did Louis let his own tears fall as he sat between Anne and his mom.

Harry only came down briefly to say goodbye to their families and he tried to apologize to Louis' family, but his mother out a stop to that immediately. When they had left Harry had kissed Louis' cheek then headed back upstairs. Louis understood that Harry wasn't in the right space to be out so he didn't mind doing the last few things that needed done before Freddie came back. Zayn had texted saying he was feeding Freddie then would bring him back and from there they would decide if he should take him overnight. So yes Louis definitely owed Zayn for today. Louis had just sat down when the front door opened and Zayn and Freddie came in.

"I'm sorry." Louis said looking at Zayn

"Don't worry about it. I can't even imagine what you two are feeling."

"She yelled for me. Cried and screamed for me. I felt useless. Harry hasn't left the bedroom except to say goodbye and he tried to apologize to my mom. I can't imagine it. I can't- my heart hurts." Louis said stubbornly wiping his eyes before Freddie saw

"Do you want me to take him for the night and take him to nursery? I don't mind and it wouldn't be the first time I kept him an extra night."

"Do you mind? It's just Harry will want to make Maddie's cupcakes and-"

"Say no more. Go take little man to say goodnight to Harry and I'll pack him a bag." Louis nodded calling for Freddie and heading upstairs with him as he told him he would be staying with Zayn.

"We're going to tell Harry goodnight okay?"

"Okay." Freddie said cheerfully opening the door and running to the bed climbing up on it , "hi Harry Papa is letting me stay with Zayn on a school night so I came to say goodnight to you before I leave."

"He is? That sounds like so much fun. I bet Zayn will let you stay up an extra hour if you ask him." Harry said

"I bet so too. I'll miss you though but I guess I'll just see you tomorrow because we live here now so I won't miss you too much." Harry chuckled

"I hope you have a lovely time tonight Freddie and you give this to Zayn. Put it in his hand and yell no takebacks and run away got it?" Harry said as he grabbed a bundle of 50s and handed it to Freddie.

"Okay."

"Tell him to buy art supplies or pizza or beer or a night buddy. It's his to do with what he wants. No take backs alright?"

"You got it Harry. Goodnight."

"Goodnight squirt." Louis chuckled as he followed Freddie downstairs where he did as Harry told put the cash bundle in his hand and yelled no takebacks then ran outside to the car. Louis could hear Harry laughing from upstairs as Zayn glared at them.

"Louis I can't-"

"You can and you will. Look I promise you that is the lowest bundle in the house so if you don't take that one he'll just give you one that's bigger. Seriously just go on and get out of here and have fun and spend it on yourself mister." Louis said pushing Zayn out of the house and locking the door behind him laughing as he watched Zayn glare at him through the window. He waited until they had left before he headed upstairs and saw Harry was sitting up in the bed now rubbing at his face with his sweater.

"I'm sorry. I just...I couldn't socialize anymore."

"Hey it's okay. Trust me my family didn't even care you were up here after that. The only reason they stayed so long because we all cleaned up so you didn't have to."

"I know and I feel bad. They were guests they shouldn't-"

"My mom was feeling useless not cleaning something, she was ready to beat you if you didn't let her help. She didn't mind. No one did. It's okay they still think you're amazing."

"Okay...alright...tell me what I gotta do." Harry said rubbing his face again.

"She said she wanted cookie dough cupcakes."

"Figures. I made them a few months ago for her birthday, I saw her a few weeks after her birthday and I baked her a cupcake of her choice. I need to run to the store real quick but I have mostly everything here."

"Okay. What do you need me to do."

"Relax. I need you to relax. Lay in bed, go to sleep, lay on the couch, whatever it is, just relax. You've done enough today."

"I want to help."

"And you will when I need you to so for now take a nap because this might take a few hours."

"Alright. I'll nap on the couch."

"Good." Harry kissed his forehead as he stood up and they headed downstairs together. Louis made up his spot on the couch and laid down while Harry got the recipe and checked his ingredients. He gave Louis a kiss before he headed out of the house and to the store. Louis fell asleep shortly after that as Titanic played on the TV.

Making the cupcakes didn't take as long as Louis had feared, but he was definitely regretting it Monday morning as he sat in the passenger seat of the Murano while Harry drove to the school. Louis had explained to Harry that career day was an all day event, hence the snacks, a few students were assigned a good a beverage like Maddie and a few others were assigned desserts. A few others were assigned drinks and lunch and stuff like that. There were thirteen students each year one class so the forty cupcakes were more than enough for Maddie's class and they would have extra to bring home which Louis was excited about. When they got to the school building Louis walked with Harry to Maddie's classroom. Maddie was sitting at a round table with her chin held in her hand as she kicked her feet.

"There she is." Louis said quietly pointing at her watching as Harry grinned when he spotted her as well. Louis said a quick hi to Maddison before he headed to his class as Harry sat in a too small chair at a too small table with Maddie. Turns out career day was much more than just talking about your job, at least for this classroom, there were coloring sheets and recommended questions to ask. It was very thought out and Harry had never been more happy to be so uncomfortable especially when the teacher had given Maddie a stack of papers about doctors to pass out to the students and parents.

Deaths of 2 at Audubon Park home a murder-suicide, Orlando police say

Authorities were called to the 3500 block of Finch Street about 9:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire, and found two residents of the home dead inside, OPD said. An initial investigation shows Jonathan P. Restey, 48, shot a 49-year-old woman before turning the gun on himself, agency spokesman Sgt. Eduardo Bernal said in an email. Citing Marsy’s Law, a victims’ rights amendment to Florida’s constitution voters approved last year, Bernal said OPD is not releasing the name of the woman “at the request of the family.” Read more here

[On Thurs, 19 Nov] Orlando Cordia Hall was executed at U.S. Penitentiary Terre Haute in accordance with the capital sentence unanimously recommended by a federal jury and imposed by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas in 1996. Hall was pronounced dead at 11:47 p.m. EST.

In September 1994, Hall and several accomplices ran a marijuana trafficking operation out of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. After a failed drug transaction involving $4,700, Hall and his accomplices drove to the Arlington, Texas, home of a man they believed had stolen their money. The man’s 16-year-old sister, Lisa Rene, refused to let them inside. Although Rene — an honor roll student with dreams of becoming a doctor — had no role in the drug transaction, Hall and his accomplices broke into the apartment and kidnapped her at gunpoint. In the assailants’ car, Hall raped her and forced her to perform oral sex on him. Hall’s accomplices subsequently drove her to a motel in Arkansas, where they tied her to a chair and repeatedly raped her. Hall arrived at the motel room the next morning, took Rene into the bathroom for fifteen to twenty minutes, and emerged to announce that “she know too much.” That night, Hall and his accomplices took her to a park where Hall and another accomplice had dug a grave that afternoon, but they could not find the grave site in the dark. The next morning, they returned to the park with Rene. At the grave site, Hall placed a sheet over Rene’s head and hit her in the head with a shovel. Rene screamed and tried to run away, but the men tackled her and took turns beating her with the shovel. “Hall was convicted and sentenced to death for the crime of federal kidnapping resulting in death under 18 U.S.C. § 1201(a). And notably, Hall does not question the validity of that conviction, or the resulting sentence of death....” In re Hall, No. 19-10345, 2020 WL 6375718, at *6 (5th Cir. Oct. 30, 2020). The jury also convicted him "under 18 U.S.C. § 924(c) for carrying a firearm during a crime of violence, for which he was separately sentenced to 60 months imprisonment.” In re Hall, No. 19-10345, 2020 WL 6375718, at *6 (5th Cir. Oct. 30, 2020).

The 7th Cir. noted that Hall’s latest appeal was meritless. The “death penalty was imposed on the conviction for kidnapping resulting in death; that sentence stands on its own factual and legal foundation and is unaffected by the validity or invalidity of Hall's § 924(c) conviction.” Hall v. Watson, No. 20-3216, 2020 WL 6779345, at *2 (7th Cir. Nov. 18, 2020).

Attorney General William P. Barr today directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons to schedule the executions of three federal-death row inmates sentenced to death for staggeringly brutal murders, including the murder of a child and, with respect to two inmates, the murder of multiple victims.

Alfred Bourgeois abused, tortured, and beat to death his young daughter. After a paternity test identified Bourgeois as the father of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl and a court ordered that he pay child support to the mother, Bourgeois took temporary custody of his daughter and brought her with him on a trucking route. While on the trip, Bourgeois systematically abused and tortured her — including by punching her in the face, whipping her with an electrical cord, and burning the bottom of her foot with a cigarette lighter. In July 2002, Bourgeois arrived at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station for a delivery. While backing his truck up to a loading dock, his daughter tipped over her training potty. Bourgeois became enraged and repeatedly slammed the back of her head into the truck’s window and dashboard, killing her. On March 16, 2004, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas found Bourgeois guilty of murder within the special territorial jurisdiction of the United States, and unanimously recommended a death sentence, which the court imposed. His conviction and sentence were affirmed on appeal, and his requests for collateral relief were ultimately rejected by federal courts. In July 2019, his execution was scheduled for Jan. 13, 2020, but legal impediments prevented the government from proceeding at that time. Bourgeois is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on Dec. 11, 2020, at the Federal Correctional Complex, Terre Haute, Indiana.

Cory Johnson murdered seven people — Peyton Johnson, Louis Johnson, Bobby Long, Dorothy Armstrong, Anthony Carter, Linwood Chiles, and Curtis Thorne — in furtherance of his drug-trafficking activities. Between 1989 and July 1992, Johnson and several co-conspirators, including federal death-row inmates Richard Tipton and James Roane, were partners in a large drug-trafficking conspiracy based in Richmond, Virginia. In early 1992, Johnson went on a killing spree, shooting and killing each of the seven victims for perceived slights or rivalry in the drug trade. Johnson shot one victim at close range after ordering him to place his head on a car steering wheel. Johnson shot and killed another victim at the victim’s home when he failed to pay for crack cocaine — and Johnson also murdered the victim’s sister and a male acquaintance. In February 1993, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia found Johnson guilty of numerous federal offenses, including seven counts of capital murder, and unanimously recommended seven death sentences, which the court imposed. Johnson’s convictions and sentences were affirmed on appeal more than 24 years ago, and his initial round of collateral challenges failed 15 years ago. Johnson’s execution initially was scheduled to occur in May 2006, but a preliminary injunction prevented the government from proceeding until it was vacated this September. Johnson is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on Jan. 14, 2021, at the Federal Correctional Complex, Terre Haute, Indiana.

Dustin John Higgs kidnapped and murdered three women — Tamika Black, 19; Tanji Jackson, 21; and Mishann Chinn, 23. One evening in January 1996, Higgs and two friends drove to Washington, D.C., to pick up Black, Jackson, and Chinn, whom Higgs had invited to his apartment in Laurel, Maryland. At the apartment, Jackson rebuffed an advance by Higgs and the women left. Higgs offered the women a ride back to Washington, D.C., but instead drove to a secluded area in the Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge, ordered the women out of the vehicle, gave a gun to one of the friends, and said, “better make sure they’re dead.” The other man shot Black and Jackson in the chest and back, and shot Chinn in the back of the head, killing all three women. On Oct.11, 2000, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland found Higgs guilty of numerous federal offenses, including three counts of first-degree premeditated murder, three counts of first-degree felony murder, and three counts of kidnapping resulting in death, and unanimously recommended nine death sentences, which the court imposed. Higgs’ convictions and sentences were affirmed on appeal nearly 17 years ago, and his initial round of collateral challenges failed nearly eight years ago. Bourgeois’s last appeal concerned the manner of execution. He claimed the federal government was required to follow Texas’s procedures in minute detail.

***On three different occasions, Congress has addressed the “manner” of implementing the death penalty for federal capital offenses. In the Crimes Act of 1790, the First Congress specified that “the manner of inflicting the punishment of death, shall be by hanging the person convicted by the neck until dead.” Crimes Act of 1790, ch. 9, § 33, 1 Stat. 112, 119. This provision governed federal executions for over 140 years. In 1937, Congress changed this rule to make the “manner” of federal executions follow state law.***

[On either reasonable view of the law] the plaintiffs’ primary FDPA claim is without merit. Accordingly, the preliminary injunction must be vacated, and judgment for the government must be entered on this claim. In re Fed. Bureau of Prisons' Execution Protocol Cases, 955 F.3d 106, 108–09, 112 (D.C. Cir. 2020), cert. denied sub nom. Bourgeois v. Barr, No. (19A1050), 2020 WL 3492763 (U.S. June 29, 2020).

Johnson and his co-defendants initially argued on appeal that the evidence was insufficient. The court said the lack of merit in those claims “warrants no extended discussion.” United States v. Tipton, 90 F.3d 861, 889–90 (4th Cir. 1996). The Supreme Court declined further review at 520 U.S. 1253 on Jun 02, 1997. They appealed again, and his claims were found to lack merit. 378 F.3d 382, and again the Supreme Court didn’t see any reason to review the case. Johnson v. U.S.546 U.S. 810 (Oct 03, 2005).

Higgs appealed his conviction.

Contrary to Higgs's contention, his handing the murder weapon to Haynes was not the only evidence of his participation in the premeditated murder of the three women. The jury could easily have concluded that the murders were motivated by Higgs's fight with Jackson and her copying down Higgs's license plate number. Higgs retrieved the gun used to commit the murders from a drawer in his apartment in the first instance, and instructed Haynes to lure the women into the van. After engaging in a whispered conversation with Haynes, Higgs also drove the van to the location of the murders, passing the most direct route back to the victims' homes. After Higgs pulled the van over to the side of the road on an isolated stretch of highway, Jackson asked him if they were being put out, and Higgs replied “something like that.” J.A. 482. At that point, he supplied the gun used to commit the murders to Haynes, mere moments before Haynes shot and killed the women. Clearly, there was sufficient evidence for the jury to convict Higgs of the charged offenses.*** United States v. Higgs, 353 F.3d 281, 314 (4th Cir. 2003).

The Supreme Court didn’t see any reason to review the decision. 543 U.S. 999 (Nov 29, 2004). He filed multiple other appeals, e.g., United States v. Higgs, No. PJM-05-3180, 2016 WL 6879939 (D. Md. Nov. 22, 2016).

He even sued the Park Police - the agency that investigated his crimes. Higgs v. United States Park Police, 933 F.3d 897 (7th Cir. 2019).

In Greensboro, N.C., the violence has gotten so extreme that a shootout erupted in front of the county courthouse the other day, across the street from the sheriff's office, leaving a 20-year-old man dead. Greensboro set a city record with 45 homicides last year, and, as of Friday, already had 54 this year.

"We've always had a level of gang activity," Greensboro Police Chief Brian James said in an interview, "but it's more prolific now. I'm not sure what's changed, but the offenders are more bold than they've ever been."

Wauwatosa police have arrested a 15-year-old Milwaukee boy who they believe opened fire at Mayfair mall Friday afternoon, sending eight to the hospital.***

Police had said Friday that witnesses described the shooter as a white man in his 20s or 30s. But Weber described the suspect as a 15-year-old Hispanic boy. His firearm was recovered during the arrest.

Four innocent bystanders were among those who received non-life-threatening injuries during the shooting.***

A gunman killed two people and wounded three others at the Sonic Drive-In near 15th and Cornhusker around 9:30 p.m. Two people were taken to the hospital for treatment while one refused treatment.

The suspect is a 23-year-old man named Roberto Silva Jr. He was booked on two counts of first-degree murder.***

Police said Nathan Pastrana, 22, and Ryan Helbert, 28, both died at the scene.

According to police, Kenneth Gerner, 25, and Zoey Reece Atalig Lujan, 18, were injured.***

Silva was previously arrested for misdemeanor identity theft at the same Sonic restaurant on Wednesday.

He's accused of charging $57 worth of food to an app that belonged to someone else. A man was fighting for his life after being stabbed in the middle of 34th Street early Sunday — just blocks from where a 39-year-old man was stabbed to death outside a pizza joint in one of two knife attacks hours earlier.

The latest victim, a 51-year-old man, was left in a pool of blood in the major Manhattan street at the intersection with 8th Avenue after a fight at around 8:30 a.m., police sources said.

“I heard a scream and then saw a guy running toward the subway,” witness Seka Quina, 23, from Brooklyn, told The Post.***

Sunday’s attack was just four blocks from where a man was stabbed to death late Saturday outside a 2 Bros Pizza takeout spot, with another stabbing late Saturday on a train pulling in to Grand Central.

Paul John Knowles (1946-1974)

Paul John Knowles, also known as the Casanova Killer, was an American serial killer who was linked to the deaths of 18 people in 1974, but claimed to have killed 35. He was born on April 17, 1946 in Orlando, Florida. His father gave him up after he was convicted of a petty crime, and Knowles ended up in a series of foster homes and reformatories. Knowles himself was incarcerated for the first time at the age of 19, and in the following years spent more time in prison. In early 1974 Knowles was serving a sentence at Raiford Prison in Florida, now known as Florida State Prison, when he started communicating with San Francisco divorcee Angela Kovic, who went to the prison to visit Knowles. After the couple got engaged, she became vital in getting Knowles released by paying for a lawyer. After he was released, Knowles flew straight to California to be with her. After being warned by a psychic of a dangerous man in her life, Covic ended the relationship and called off the wedding. Devastated by the rejection, Knowles claimed to have killed 3 people on the streets of San Francisco the night Covic ended their relationship. He returned to Jacksonville, Florida and was soon arrested after stabbing a bartender during a fight, but picked a lock in his cell and escaped on July 26, 1974.

The cross-country murder spree of Paul John Knowles started in Jacksonville the night he escaped from jail. He broke into 65-year-old Alice Curtis’s home, binding and gagging her before ransacking her house for money and valuables. Curtis choked to death on her dentures, but it is not known if this occurred before or after Knowles left. He also stole her Dodge Dart, but realised police had already connected him to the crime and were advertising him as a wanted fugitive. When he stopped to abandon the car, he saw family acquaintances, Lillian, 11, and Mylette Anderson, 11. Scared that they would identify him he kidnapped them, strangled them and buried their bodies in a nearby swamp. Not long afterwards, Knowles claimed he picked up a teenage girl who was hitchhiking and killed her – she remained unidentified for decades. On December 21, 2011, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified her as Ima Jean Sanders, 13, who had run away from Beaumont, Texas in July 1974 to Warner Robins, Georgia and then disappeared on August 1, 1974. The day after the Anderson sisters disappeared, Knowles met Marjorie Howie, 49, in Atlantic Beach, Florida. He ended up in her apartment (it is not known if she invited him or was forced to take him) where he strangled her with a nylon stocking. He stole her television set, which he would later give to a former girlfriend. Near the end of August Knowles was in Musella, Georgia, and broke into the home of Kathie Sue Pierce, who was there with her 3-year-old son. He used a telephone cord to strangle her – he did not harm the child. On September 3, 1974, Knowles entered Scott’s Inn (a roadside pub near Lima, Ohio) where he met 32-year-old accountant executive for Ohio Power Company William Bates. The bartender, who knew Bates, recalled him and a young redheaded man having several drinks and leaving together. Bates’ wife reported him missing and police realised his car was missing too. Close to the bar, police found an abandoned Dodge Dart that they traced back to Alice Curtis. In October, the naked corpse of William Bates was found – he had been strangled and dumped in the woods. Now driving Bates’ car, Knowles moved on to a campground in Ely, Nevada. It was there, on September 18, 1974, that he bound and shot 2 elderly campers, Emmett and Lois Johnson. Because this murder seemed random it was a cold case until Knowles confessed, although he did use their credit cards for a short period to pay for his expenses.

On September 21, 1974, Knowles’ killing spree continued in Seguin, Texas, where he encountered strangled motorcyclist Charlynn Hicks. He abducted and raped her before strangling her with her own pantyhose. He dragged her body through a barbed-wire fence – it was discovered 4 days later. He then travelled to Birmingham, Alabama, where he met beautician Ann Dawson on September 23. It isn’t known whether he abducted her or she travelled with him willingly, but she did pay the bills while they travelled together until he killed her on September 29. Knowles claimed to have dumped her corpse in the Mississippi River, but it was never found. Knowles arrived in Marlborough, Connecticut in mid-October 1974, where his serial killings. He entered the house of Karen Wine and her daughter Dawn, 16, on October 16, where he bound and raped them before killing them with a nylon stocking. The only thing missing from the home seemed to be a tape recorder. By October 18, Knowles had travelled to Woodford, Virginia, where he broke into the house of Doris Hosey, 53, and shot her with her husband’s rifle before wiping the prints from the gun and placing it next to her body. Police found no signs of robbery to indicate a motive in the case. Still driving William Bates’ car, Knowles picked up 2 hitchhikers in Key West, Florida. He intended to kill them both but his plan went wrong when a police officer stopped him for a traffic violation. Not recognising Knowles, the officer let him off with a warning. Shaken, he dropped his potential victims off in Miami, Florida, and soon afterwards contacted his lawyer, who suggested Knowles surrender. He rejected this idea, but arranged a meeting with him that lasted just long enough to hand over a taped confession (made on the tape recorder stolen from Karen Wine’s home). He then left town before police noticed he was there. On November 6 in Milledgeville, Georgia, Knowles met Carswell Carr and was invited back to his home to spend the night. While sharing a drink, Knowles stabbed Carr to death and then strangled his 15-year-old daughter. After killing her, Knowles tried to have sex with her corpse, but was unsuccessful. After fleeing from Macon, Knowles was also suspected of the November 2 murder of hitchhiker Edward Hilliard, who was found in nearby woods, and his friend Debbie Griffin, whose body has never been found.

On November 8, while bar-hopping in Atlanta, Knowles met Sandy Fawkes, a British journalist – she was impressed by his “gaunt good looks”. The pair spent the night together, but according to Fawkes, he was repeatedly unable to perform when they tried to have sex. This suggests impotence when it came to willing companions. The 2 parted on November 10, but the next day Susan Mackenzie, an acquaintance of Fawkes’, was picked up by Knowles and he demanded sex from her at gunpoint. She escaped and reported the incident to police, but when patrolmen attempted to stop him, Knowles threatened them with a sawn-off shotgun and escaped. Days later, in West Palm Beach, Florida, Knowles broke into the home of disabled woman Beverly Mabee. He abducted her sister and stole their car. From there, he travelled to Fort Pierce, Florida and for reasons never discovered, he released his hostage unharmed. On the morning of November 17, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Eugene Campbell recognised the stolen car near Perry and tried to make an arrest, but after Knowles was pulled over he managed to wrestle the officer’s gun away from him. He took Campbell hostage and drove away in his patrol car, later using the sirens to stop James Meyer, a motorist, in order to ditch the Highway Patrol vehicle and continue his journey in a less noticeable one. Now with 2 hostages, Knowles took the men to a remote wooded area in Pulaski County, Georgia and handcuffed them to a tree. He shot each of them in the head at close range. Shortly afterwards Knowles tried to drive through a police roadblock in Henry County, Georgia, but lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. He escaped on foot and shot at officers pursuing on foot. A chaotic chase ensued, with Knowles being followed by dogs, law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, and helicopters. Knowles was finally cornered by an armed civilian with a shotgun a few miles from the search area, who took Knowles to a nearby home where he called police. Knowles was outside the perimeter given for the manhunt and would have escaped without the actions of this man. Once in custody, Knowles claimed responsibility for 35 murders, but only 20 were ever confirmed.

On December 18, 1974, Sheriff Earl Lee and Agent Ronnie Angel from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were driving down Interstate 20 with Knowles handcuffed in the back. They were en route to Henry County, Georgia, where Knowles had admitted to ditching a handgun he had taken from Florida State Trooper Charles Eugene Campbell, later killing him with it. The SBI reported: “Knowles grabbed Lee’s handgun, discharging it through the holster in the process and while Lee was struggling with Knowles and attempting to keep control of the vehicle, Angel fired three shots into Knowles’ chest, killing him instantly.”
