Friday night means writing shopping lists

Making menus, perusing weekly deals

Seeing delicious desserts to resist

And putting thought into our wholesome meals.

I love it, this ordinary chore

The scribble-scrabble of pencil scratch

Sitting next to the woman I adore

Wondering how I lucked into such a match.

We've made a date for dinner

With our nieces —

Human tornadoes both

Cacophonies of joy and chaos and love.

I can't wait to let their company

Wash over me.

Energise me.

Soothe me.

And by day's end I'll look forward

To handing them back too,

Herding them back to exhausted parents

Full of sugar and giggles and cheer.

How I love them, the rascally monkeys!
