Pandalorium #5 - A Cryptic Coat

To their many fans the world over, the red panda’s spectacular fur coat and markings make them stand out. However, in their natural habitat, those colors make for surprisingly efficient camoflague! The bright red color of the panda’s fur mimic the lichen that grows on the fur trees they’ll often fall asleep in. The black underside makes them more difficult to see among the shadows of the tree branches as well.

Two other elements of the red panda’s distinctive fur patterns deserve special mention here. First, the distinctive red “tear marks” on their face are likely an adaptation to avoid too much sign getting into the panda’s eyes. As for the striped tail, there’s no certain answer. One theory is that the rings break the visual contitunity of the tail, making it harder for predators to find it among the trees.
