1. Tam Coc Boat Ride Ninh Binh Overview
Tam Coc is a part of Ninh Binh, which is located around 100 kilometers from Hanoi and famous for being an ideal off-the-beaten-track tourism destination in Viet Nam. Tam Coc possesses surreal karst beauty along the Ngo Dong River, and it is immensely popular with domestic tourists.
And there is one more special thing about the boat trip in Tam Coc is that the boatmen will sail your boat with their feet, not their hands. The reason is that they always have to sail for long hours with hands, which can hurt their arms seriously. Therefore, Vietnamese boatmen have come up with this idea to help reduce the bad effects of their jobs, and also create a unique trend only seen in Ninh Binh.
Local boatmen have the skill of sailing with their great feet that will make the boat go a long way.
2. Tam Coc boat tour price, time and opening hours

3. Tam Coc boat ride route – What can you expect from the trip?
Now, you may curious of what to witness on a Tam Coc boat tour. Let’s see!
>>> Have a look at the itinerary of Hoa Lu Tam Coc Mua Cave trip to know what can you expect!
Tam Coc is well known for its wonderful sight with Ngo Dong River surrounded by limestone mountains and rice paddy field. At the halfway of the Tam Coc boat tour, you will have a chance to admire the magnificent Mua Cave from outside and other serene sightseeing destinations.
While you are on board, you can appreciate an amazing Tam Coc Ninh Binh: mesmerizing sceneries of the blue sky, crystal-clear water, giant karst mountains – you will surely be captivated.
In this boat tour, you will be visiting three caves altogether. The first one is called Ca Cave (The First Cave) with the length of 127 meters; the second one is the 60 meters long Hai Cave (The Second Cave) and of course, the last Ba Cave (The Third Cave), a bit smaller in size. All three caves are quite near each other, so it will take up at most 2 hours for you to tour through all of them.
The beauty inside the caves
The insides of these caves are really wonderful with colourful stalactites hanging down from the top just like crystal chandeliers made by Mother Nature. This place holds significant value to both tourism and research purpose and its beauty is undeniable. You will be able to take a lot of great photographs to keep as a souvenir as well as admire the charm of Tam Coc on water.
Also, you will be able to witness the floating market, which is unique to Vietnam. People sell everything on small wooden boats: from food, drink to basic necessities, their boats form a large mass just like a real market in land. The colourful life of common people will lie there, waiting for you to explore.
And you should pay more attention to your boatmen because they sail like no other – they sail with their feet. In that way, the stress on the back and arm will be minimized and help them prevent any potential injury. According to local people, this unique way helps to reduce the pressure on the back and arm. Sailing the boat by feet is not only more effective but it also requires less effort.
Another great thing when sailing with feet is that the people can use their free hands to do other things, for example, using the phone, eating or drinking water, basically every simple task. And furthermore, it becomes a great pattern exclusive to Tam Coc boat tour, just like a brand name for them.

How to get to Tam Coc boat ride
If your starting point is Hanoi, you can easily get to Tam Coc in many ways. The most popular way for tourists will be booking a tour to Tam Coc with transfer included, or else travellers have to arrange their means of transportation themselves.
First, you will have to get to Ninh Binh. You can choose to take the train with the train ticket ranging from 100.000 VND (5 US$) to 200.000 VND (10 US$) and approximately 2.5 hours journey. The train is considered to be quite comfortable and enjoyable with all the view from the windows. You can either buy the ticket offline at the stations or online at the railway website.
Or you can choose the bus. Bus to Ninh Binh varies a lot, from the public bus (the cheapest, but can be uncomfortable) to the limousine (a high-class bus that is convenient but will cost you a little bit more). In general, the price range for a seat on the bus is quite the same with a train ticket. You can book the bus at the bus station, the bus agency or even making a phone call.
The most convenient way to get to Tam Coc must be renting a private car, in case you go in a group. Renting a car with a local driver will be flexible, more private and enjoyable. The only disadvantage is the cost.
From Ninh Ninh city centre, you can travel to Tam Coc on a taxi. The distance is around 7 kilometers, so it should cost you roughly 100.000VND (5 US$) of the taxi fare. Or you can also rent a motorbike and drive you there, but it is less safe and can be risky sometimes.
On the way to Tam Coc, you can witness many stunning landmark as the whole Ninh Binh is beautiful
5. Small tips for a big trip – Tam Coc boat ride tips
Remember to bring smaller notes of Vietnam Dong to pay for local people if you want to buy something from them, they will be grateful. Because many local people only manage a small vendor, large bills will be a bit troublesome for them.
You should bring sun-protecting gear: a hat, sunglass or suncream in order to avoid sunburn or fatigue under the direct heat from the sunlight. Also, bringing a bottle of water is not a bad idea.
Remember to check the life jackets on the boat. As always, you have to make sure that you are safe in any situation.
Tips are not compulsory, but the boatmen will be happy if you give them a small tip for great service.
The boatmen always expect a small tip around 2 US$ at the end of trip as they deliver a great service

You should choose trusty tour operators and contact them via their official contact information, or on their website.
Avoid booking a tour through your hotel service. The reason is that being the middleman, the hotel will raise the price of the tour to get tips. Also, the hotel can falsely describe the itinerary of the trip to lure travelers.
Always discuss what is included and excluded in the itinerary and the overall budget with your Hanoi travel agency. You should have an accurate idea about the money you will spend on the trip in order not to burn a hole in your wallet.
You should keep your tour operators’ contact information in case of an emergency. Don’t hesitate to contact them if anything goes wrong or if you are unclear about anything, they are always glad to help you out.

4. Tips for choosing a Vietnam travel company
Beside, below are some tips for you to choose the most suitable and reliable travel agency, as well as having the best travel experience in Vietnam:
Direct booking with the Vietnam travel agency
When coming to the hotel in Vietnam, there will be tons of people trying to sell you tours. However, please refrain from choosing tours with the middleman, because the price will be especially high. They will find ways to charge you more than when working directly with the travel agency. Therefore, you should booking tours with a reliable agency, not through a medium.
Check it out if the travel agency is authentic
There are a lot of travel agencies pop up when you search online, but, there is high chance that scam agencies are included, so you should check out everything first: the website, the office location, the tour package and the information to make sure you choose the authentic Vietnam travel agency, not a fake one.
There are bunch of travel agency in Vietnam street, check thoroughly to avoid “copy-cat” ones!
Discuss the itinerary and the cost carefully
When you are done with choosing a tour, you should start sitting down and discussing about the itinerary and the cost. Asking about the inclusions and exclusions in the total fee and also the activities in the tour package. You should read through the term of payment to see if the cost is up to your expectation, or else it may leave a hole in your wallet.
Reading Vietnam travel agency reviews
This is also a good way to find out a reliable Vietnam travel agency. Review of the previous tourists will give you a hint of how the tour and service of that agency are like and also help you to avoid scam.  Honest reviews can also help you to pick out the best tour of the agency and remind you of some tips to enhance your experience. A few minutes of reading won’t do any harm, but it would give you a lot of precious information.
Keeping contact information of the agency
It is important that you keep contact information of your Vietnam travel agency in Vietnam. Bad things can come up at any time. And if you have a question or any requirement, you’d better contact the headquarter to get immediate help.
So, have you choose any reliable Vietnam travel agency from the list above? If you still confused and need more advice, feel free to contact Original Hoa Lu Tam Coc local experts. We are always here for you!

Then, our local experts will tell you the differences between of Trang An and Tam Coc as well as reviews from previous travelers. Tam Coc or Trang An boat ride – Some rough idea!
Trang An and Tam Coc belong to Trang An landscape complex, Ninh Binh, Vietnam. The complex has been recognized as a UNESCO Heritage Site since 2014.
Taking a day trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, these two places are definitely the highlight of your trip. Both will give you a chance to explore the beautiful natural landscapes by a boat trip. Now come to the details – Trang An or Tam Coc boat ride!
Trang An boat tour
First, get to know the Trang An boat tour.
Trang An offers you a boat ride into the pristine nature. Small paddle wooden boats float on the Sao Khe river and slowly pass through valleys, mountains, caves, temples and palaces along the route. After all, the thing that leaves you in awe is the beauty of amazing sceneries reflecting on the tranquil green water.
A row into wonderland with Trang An boat tour
There are 3 Trang An boat tours for you to choose. Each has a different route and duration.
The first route passes 9 caves and 4 temples in 3.5 hours:
Habour – Trinh Temple – Toi Cave – Sang Cave – Nau Ruou Cave – Tran Temple – Ba Giot Cave – Seo Cave – Son Duong Cave – Khong Palace – Bao Hieu Temple – Khong Cave – Tran Cave – Quy Hau Cave – Habour.
This route offers the most sightseeing trip with 13 destinations in total and the most suitable for those who want to get the most of Trang An.
The second route passes 4 caves, 2 temples and the highlighted film set of “Kong: Skull Island” in 2.5 hours:
Habour – Lam Cave – Vang Cave – Thanh Truot Cave – Suoi Tien Temple – Dai Cave – Vu Lam Palace – Kong film site – Habour.
This route is shorter and more suitable for the elderly and children. Especially, this is the route for anyone having a keen on the Hollywood movie “Kong: Skull Island”.
The Skull Island is definitely the highlight of this boat trip!
The last route passes 3 caves, 3 temples and the famous film site in 3 hours:
Habour – Trinh Temple – May Cave – Suoi Tien Temple – Dia Linh Cave – Dai Cave – Vu Lam Palace – Kong film site – Habour.
This last route is more about relaxation. You can have more time to enjoy and admire the sceneries as it has fewer spots in the duration of 3 hours.
Which route to choose, it depends much on your likings and priorities!
Tam Coc boat tour
The second one in “Trang An or Tam Coc boat tour” – same small paddle wooden boat but a totally different vibe.
You will slowly move on the poetic Ngo Dong river and surrounded by grandiose limestone mountains and lush green or golden paddy fields on both sides. Sometimes, you can spot naughty goats climbing and playing on the karst mountainsides, then “respect” the true hikers!
Along the route, you can notice the top of the splendid Mua Cave that will captivate your heart in the Tam Coc Mua Cave tour. From that top, you can view to not only the Tam Coc valley but also the whole amazing Ninh Binh – which will blow your mind away!
The stunning Tam Coc is filled with green and yellow paddy fields looking down from the top of Mua Cave
Not like Trang An, you only have one choice to go on a 2-hour boat route passing 3 intriguing caves Ca Cave (The First Cave), Hai Cave (The Second Cave) and Ba Cave (The Third Cave).
Deep into the caves, many things are waiting for you. From the beautiful stalactite towers hanging from the ceiling like crystal chandelier to the thrilling feeling while covered by the dark with glimmering lights. And at the exit, a whole new scenery will show up right in front of your eyes!
A special thing you can witness in Tam Coc is the unique skill of the boatmen here. They sail the boat with their feet, how incredible! This technique does not only add a unique to Tam Coc boat tour but also help the boatmen prevent major injuries by reducing the stress on their back and arm.
Only in Tam Coc, can you see this unique technique!
Trang An or Tam Coc boat tour? – Now pick your side!
The 2 most popular tour Hoa Lu Trang An Mua Cave and Hoa Lu Tam Coc Mua Cave always make tourists confused. You may ask “Which is better Trang An or Tam Coc?”. We say “There is no fixed answer”. Sound a little indecisive but we really mean it!
Trang An or Tam Coc boat tour has its own advantage and drawback. After collecting advice from local experts and reviews from travelers, we come up with:
About the scenery
Tam Coc is considered more natural and scenic but really busy with tourists.
Not as busy as Tam Coc, Trang An, on the other hand, are more constructed and artificial. It has been developed for Asian tourists as ecotourism and religious destination. Besides the exciting boat ride, Trang An offers more explorations with pagodas, temples and palaces decorating the scenery. That’s why Trang An is more diverse and well-organized. And there are no locals trying to sell you things while on the boat!
Trang An has several hidden pagodas, temples and historical relics along the route
But if you once see photos of Tam Coc in its best seasons, you may change your mind. In the harvest season, Tam Coc is painted with the gorgeous golden rice fields making the whole landscape turns more breathtaking and magnificent. To witness this scenery, come to Tam Coc around May and early June. Otherwise, you can contemplate the vivid lush green rice fields in the period of January and February.
Tam Coc in its finest season – the period of May and early June
About the price
At Tam Coc, you will have to pay 120.000 VND for the sightseeing ticket and share the boat ticket that is 150.000 VND/boat for a maximum of 4 people. While in Trang An, the ticket costs 200.000 VND in total.
Tam Coc or Trang An ticket prices are quite the same so apparently, you don’t have to consider much!
About the duration
Tam Coc boat ride takes you appropriate 2 hours while the one in Trang An takes 2,5 to 3,5 hours depending on the route. So if you don’t want to spend much time on the boat, you can pick Tam Coc then use the remaining time to visit one more destination or just take a short bike tour cycling around the wharf and idyllic villages. You may want to check out the itinerary of a typical Hoa Lu Tam Coc day trip!
Just half an hour can help you learn more about local life!
Trang An and Tam Coc – Can I do both?
The question is “Is Tam Coc and Trang An possible in 1 day?”
It is, you can visit Tam Coc in the morning then Trang An in the afternoon. But your trip will be quite rush and has no highlight since both offer you the same activities.
However, if you don’t want to miss any single place, the best answer to “Trang An or Tam Coc” is taking a Ninh Binh tour 2 days. With 2 days in Ninh Binh, you can explore Tam Coc, Hoa Lu, Hang Mua in day 1 then Trang An, Bai Dinh in day 2. Absolutely make the most of Ninh Binh in 1 trip!
>>> If you are looking for the best Ninh Binh tour 2 days, let us know!
Read a review of our previous customer who chose to visit both places:
“Lovely boat ride & amazing caves.
I won’t repeat all of the other details already mentioned by others but will say that we couldn’t decide whether to visit Trang An or Tam Coc, so we did them both. Trang An trip lasted about 3.5 hrs, going through a 300 m cave, another smaller cave 160 m and a third 100 m. The precision the women steered the boats through them was amazing, and seemingly so effortlessly.
A few stops along the way and then the return trip, (which goes a different way as the caves are so tight that traffic can only go one way) goes through other smaller caves and then out in the open river. It gets very hot in the full sun, so be sure to wear a hat/sunscreen, etc. you can buy drinks, etc at stops along the way. The guide/paddler does try to sell her wears near the end, but not forcefully.
Tam Coc, also a river/paddle boat experience is a closer to the rice fields experience. Go early morning before the Hanoi day trippers or late afternoon. Seemed more international visitors here than Trang An, maybe not as many people know about it as I think it has only been open a couple of years. Caves were good but not nearly as long or as low as Trang An, but still a lovely trip…”

“How many days in Ninh Binh?” | The ideal number of day to Ninh Binh
“How many days to Ninh Binh?” – Actually, the answer to this question definitely depends on your time-spending and which sites you would like to visit.

Together with Original Hoa Lu Tam Coc, let’s find out what trip legth is perfect for you!
How many days are enough to explore this beautiful destionation?
Stay curious and focus on the splendid spots of Ninh Binh itinerary 2 days
Tam Coc (Three Spectacular Caves)
Known as “Halong Bay on rice field” or “The Terrestrial Halong Bay”, Tam Coc looks indeed like a movie scene. Tam Coc has three caves included: Hang Ca, the first cave; Hang Hai, the second cave and the third and smallest cave, Hang Cuoi. Vietnamese call Tam Coc the Green Sea, and you’ll understand why once your eyes witness the scenery of the paddy fields.
Watching beautiful sunset on a boat in the river in Tam Coc is a must when going to Ninh Binh
To visit Tam Coc, visitors get on the boat at the central station. Local people row the boat on Ngo Dong River through the cliffs, caves and rice fields, which takes two hours. When crossing through the caves, the air becomes cool, the noises become silent, and many stalactites hang down like glossy teeth. There’s no shade in the boats so don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat or umbrella unless you want to own a sunburnt skin when coming back.
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital belongs to Trang An landscape complex, it contains the history of Vietnam in the tenth century where many important events of our nation took place during the Dinh (968 – 80) and early Le (980 – 1009) dynasties.
Hoa Lu consists of three smaller areas called Outer City, Inner City, and South City. These three cities created a shape like the number 80. Outer and Inner City stood next to each other much like the number 8, and South City is the bigger town alongside the other two. The South City was a military base and locals called it Trang An city. The other two cities were used to place the imperial building and locals called it Hoa Lu city.
Nowadays, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital is not intact anymore because of a tumultuous history. However, you can visit the temple of King Dinh and the temple of King Le, which were built in the base area of Hoa Lu Ancient Capital by locals.
The ancient throne of the King used as an altar in the temple
The fortress outside is built based on the natural advantages: the mountain provides good background, the deep valley is a basement, and the rivers supply water for people inside the fortress and would become traps to fight against the enemy in any case. This fortress is a very solid one that can defend against even the strongest enemy for months.
The royal family lived in the inner citadel. It is very peaceful inside the complex and you can wander around by yourself or ask for help from the guides at the temple who work for free.

Mua Cave
Apart from the breathtaking scenery, the original thing of this attractive tourist site is the way leading to the top of the mountain. The architecture is inspired by the Great Walls with approximately 500 stone steps. Especially, from the top of the mountain, visitors can admire the whole spectacular prospect of Tam Coc as well as other famous scenic spots in Ninh Binh.
The paranomic view of Mua Cave will amaze you the second reaching the mountain’s top
Not just the tourist attraction simply, this is a vacation destination that a lot of tourists direct to. It owns a peaceful campus with the birds chirping, the scenic vistas of small fields, lotus ponds, and rocky mountains. Located in the centre of the relic is a large artificial lake, the surrounding sides are covered by the colour green of the trees creating an extremely atmospheric space. The statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva stands on the peak of the mountain looking down to the ancient land.
The heat and humidity can be quite debilitating, so make sure you’re well hydrated and have plenty of water with you at the time.
Trang An: A place that gives the feeling “Don’t mess with Mother”
Being endowed with a beautiful landscape, Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh Province in Northern Viet Nam is called as a “Halong Bay on land” with numerous caves, mountains, valley, trees and historic relics.

The scenery of Trang An is actually the legacy of karst topography revolution in tropical climate from the Triassic period (250 million years ago) to the current Quaternary period (starting 2.5 million years ago). Throughout this time, constant geological collapses and movements of the Earth’s crust formed these charming limestone mountains and towers, pristine valleys, mysterious caves, and the complex waterway system that we look at today.
