To Biz or Not to Biz: Starting a Kids Clothing Line
Seven years ago, my husband was forced to switch jobs due to a company closure. Luckily, he found work almost instantly and in the same field; he was a screen printer and worked for promotional companies for several years. At the same time, we were blessed with the birth of our first born, a boy named Bryan. The joys of parenthood coupled with the worries of financial stability quickly consumed our lives and we suddenly found ourselves contemplating starting a business. We pitched the idea of opening our own screen printing shop to my in-laws who immediately jumped on board and offered us a ten-thousand-dollar loan to get us off the ground. Unfortunately, the dream of being our own bosses vanished as quickly as it was conceived. The timing was not right as we knew that rushing into business ownership out of desperation was not the best solution for first timers like us - we needed more time to plan, create, and execute a long lasting and meaningful business. Reluctantly, we declined the offer and put the dream on hold for what would seem like an eternity.
Fast forward to summer of 2017. Once again, bitten by the entrepreneurship bug, we sat back at the idea table to figure out what type of business to start. We knew that we wanted to incorporate some element of print design and decided that children’s apparel was the way to go. With a quick name search and business registration with the city, Feral Apparel, organic cotton clothing for kids, was born! Here’s why we chose to produce with fair trade, organic cotton. Our concept was meaningful but not unique by any means. However, we noticed that there was still a lot of room in the niche market of organic textiles and knew that branding would be integral in order to succeed in this industry. We first did a little research to find out what parents looked for when purchasing organic or eco-friendly clothing. The top three needs of our target market are:
· 1.       Affordability
· 2.       Accessibility
· 3.       Stylish/Trend Setting
There are a number of local businesses within the same market, on which we spent months researching and deliberating if we should follow this business model or that company’s design strategy. Toronto brand, Mini Mioche, offers their clothing brand online as well as a carefully curated selection of eco-friendly baby and kids clothes and accessories. Whereas, Vancouver based VonBon sells their brand exclusively and have a number of stock lists (retailers) that supply their pieces across the nation.
So before quitting our regular 9-5 jobs, we needed to come up with a plan of our own. We knew that selling online would be best since it could get the business up and running without a lot of money; rent and factory overhead for a brick-and-mortar store tend to increase initial investment. We found a very useful blog on how to start an online business. It provides detailed steps that should be taken when creating a plan, such as, choosing a niche and choosing a product. Additionally, social media platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are critical in business marketing and promotion. We found some great information on how different social media channels work best for certain needs here.
Now that we have the business registered and the plan to attack, there’s not turning back. Even though we have a number of to-do items to check off of our list, like creating artwork, patterns, and production, we are on our way and hope to be in the manufacturing stage in a few months.
Keeping fingers crossed!
