2019 NY6 Prognostication: Week 3

Alright, Week 2 was pretty interesting and it definitely changed some of my predictions. The SEC could have 3 teams with fewer than two losses and at this point that could mean there are multiple teams from that league in the Playoff again. The PAC-12 is on fire and not in a good way. The Mountain West is the best G5 conference by a wide margin, but I think that opens the door up for UCF to go undefeated yet again.

Cotton Bowl: 13-0 UCF vs 10-2 Florida

GOD PLEASE LET IT HAPPEN. I think Florida absolutely does not want to play a really good UCF and it would be amazing if they were forced to do it. The only better thing would be if it was in the Peach or Orange Bowls but that isn’t possible right now. In the previous few installments I had Boise going unbeaten but if the Knights do it I think they get the nod over the Broncos.

Fiesta Bowl (semifinal): 13-0 Clemson vs 12-1 Ohio State

I’m no longer sure that Ohio State can make the Playoff if they go 12-1. They might have to go 13-0 to do it even in the Big Ten East, because if Georgia or LSU has only 1 loss they have great cases to make it over the Buckeyes. We’ll see what the future holds.

Peach Bowl (semifinal): 13-0 Alabama vs 12-1 Oklahoma

The same holds true for Oklahoma. The Sooners probably need to win out to assure they get in ahead of any second (or third) SEC entrants.

Orange Bowl: 10-2 NC State vs 11-1 LSU

I certainly have to drop Miami out of the Orange Bowl after their loss to North Carolina. NC State seems like the most logical choice, but the Coastal race could make the ACC bid a big weird mess. As for LSU, I’ll say this, they probably won’t get held under 10 by Bama this time...

Rose Bowl: 11-2 Washington vs 11-2 Wisconsin

Look, the PAC-12 is in tatters right now. Oregon could win it, Utah could win it, USC could now win it. Or Washington could win it anyway, just like they did last year after losing to Cal. Idk man. All I’m now sure of is that Wisconsin is going to wreck the Big Ten West aside from maybe Iowa.

The matchup marks the fifth time in history that the in-state rivals will play each other as top-10 teams and the first such meeting since 1964. The Wolverines will be looking for revenge after the Spartans escaped Ann Arbor with a 27-24 win last year.

Michigan cruised to a 33-7 win over Northwestern last week behind a strong rushing attack. Running back Blake Corum, who leads the Wolverines with 729 rushing yards this season, racked up 119 yards and two touchdowns against the Wildcats. Hassan Haskins wasn’t far behind with 110 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

If you’re not First you’re Last!

Earlier today I tweeted my picks for each Power Five conference. If you don’t like it, I don’t care, but feel free to tell me about it in the comments.

ACC:Clemson Tigers

Initial thoughts:This should kind of be a no brainer for anyone who follows the sport. What Dabo Swinney has cooking in Clemson, SC is something special, consistency. Few things are more challenging in College Football than to build and maintain a program in a Power Five league, and Dabo has done just that.

Where could they stumble?:Don’t expect Syracuse to get the Tigers this year, that game is in Death Valley and the fans haven’t forgotten what happened last year, they will turn the place into Deaf Valley.

The game in College Station for the ACC vs SEC regular season matchup should be entertaining, but don’t expect the Tigers to go easy on the Aggies.  Dabo and his team play better when the lights are brighter.

Now that those two popular picks for a trip-up-game are out of the way, go ahead and circle November 10th, that is when the Tigers could hurt. They will be playing an afternoon game in Boston, Mass against the Boston College Eagles.  That game has TRAP written all over it.  Clemson is used to playing in warmer weather and average high in Boston in November is 33.  Buckle-up Clemson fans, that game is gunna be rough.

Final Record: 11-1 heading into ACC Championship vs Miami Hurricanes

Big12: TCU Horned Frogs

Initial thoughts: This is a risky pick. Most people are picking Oklahoma because they have owned the conference the last few years, but the Mayfield era is over.  Baker Mayfield was a generational player and there are far too many questions about the Quarterback spot he left behind for me to feel confident picking them in Lincoln Riley’s “pass first, run never” offense. I expect 3 losses for OU.

Gary Patterson had too much of a pep in his step at Big12 media days for him to be worried about his team.  That man is a legend in the making.  He tends to coach the more balanced teams in a conference of one-sided talent. I trust him and his silent confidence. TCU to shock the conference.

Where could they stumble?:The Ohio State game suddenly could be a toss-up when I would have previously handed the win to Urban Meyer and his Buckeyes, but too much is unknown now, maybe this loss is less legitimate.  No matter the outcome, this is an out of conference game, but depending on how high or low the outcome is could impact how they play the following week.  College Football is all about emotions.

November 10th is a big day for TCU to lose too, I have them losing in Morgantown in front of a sellout crowd of toothless hillbillies, I mean, the University of West Virginia faithful. First one to 50 points wins.

Final Record: 10-2 heading into the Big12 Championship vs Texas Longhorns

Big10: Penn State Nittany Lions

Initial thoughts:Penn State sits in probably the strongest division in College Football this season, the Big10 East. So why am I so confident about these guys making it to the top of the mountain? James “motherf*ckin’” Franklin. The guy is an elite coach and will be adding a National Championship to his record books within the next 3 seasons.  Even with the loss of their generation player, this team reloads. With Ohio State turmoil, this could blow the race wide open and I think Penn State is poised to seize the moment, in a white out.

Where could they stumble?:November 10th is the preseason biggest weekend of the year.  Wisconsin rolls into State College, PA and shoves their ground'n'pound game down the high flying Lions’ throats. These two will be two Titans meeting under a snowy night in November and a cold loss for Penn State. No worries though, I have them rematching for the Big10 Championship and Penn State taking revenge.

Michigan State could be a tricky game for the Lions’ as well. I expect them to hold off Sparty, but this rivalry game on October 13th will be fun to watch, but I predict to be the nail in Michigan State’s playoff coffin.

Final Record: 11-1 heading into Big10 Championship vs Wisconsin

Pac12: Washington Huskies

Initial thoughts:By far the most boring conference heading into the season. After the worst bowl season performance of all time, Washington is the only team who carries hope into their season.  Chris Peterson doesn’t have bad teams, I don’t expect the Huskies to make it to the playoffs though.

Where could they stumble?: Where do I begin?

I see all of those games just as likely a win as they could be a loss for the Huskies.  The team is not bad, but they are not built to run the table.  They are bound to slip up one or three times.

SEC: Georgia Bulldogs

Initial thoughts: The hottest team last year has been awfully quiet this off-season. People made noise picking them to win the east and face Alabama or Auburn for a rematch but beyond that not much is being made of the Bulldogs. This team has a lot of new names and faces which adds to the skepticism, however, Kirby Smart begins year 3with the best recruits the school has ever had, Jake Fromm takes another step towards greatness, and the fan base ignites a fire under the players to propel them to a title.

Where could they stumble?: A lot of people are warning of an upset in Columbia against the Gamecocks in week two but I think the Bulldogs start looking scary instead. I think the first possible stumble comes September 22nd when Mizzou rolls into town. Since Missouri joined the SEC, UGA and UM have had a heated back and forth. I know the 3rd Tigers have been down the last two years, but don’t expect them to stay down. Drew Locke has the potential to give the Bulldog’s secondary fits.  Pair that with a potential sleepy noon kickoff in Athens? Kirby and the boys might get left stunned.

Georgia should handle Florida at “The World’s Largest Cocktail Party"just fine, but you never know in a rivalry game, especially with a new head coach at the helm in Gainesville. I think Georgia will control the game but don’t be shocked if the ole’ "Quarterback Whisperer” pulls his season one signature win in Jacksonville against the Dawgs.

Auburn vs Georgia is probably the most underrated rivalry in the SEC and top five in the sport. These two have played more years than most programs have even existed. They are the south’s two original football teams and their clash has rocked the deep south for two centuries now.  Auburn got embarrassed on the biggest stage in the conference end of last year in Atlanta and I expect them to march into Athens on (yes, another one) November 10th and give Georgia their best shot.  Expect the Tigers to be undefeated on that Saturday and the Bulldogs to look nervous.

Heisman, Conference Predictions, and the College Football Playoff - 2021 College Football Season Preview - Part 2

Let the countdown begin!  

We are about a week away from a handful of games next weekend and a couple weeks before the rest of college football kicks off.  If you know me, you know I watch whatever sport is on, but in particular any football that’s on.  But even though I’ll watch whatever game, I’m only really going to go through Power 5 predictions, because well that’s usually the only ones that matter.  Sure every few years we’ll get a good story like Boise State or UCF come up and challenge from the Group of 5, but I’m an Oklahoma fan by trade so we are going to mess with the Power 5.

In this preview, I’m going to look at who people are looking at for the Heisman, who will challenge and win in the Power 5 conferences, and who to look at challenge and possibly get into the College Football Playoff.  I’m going to do something new and carry it through each preview category.  I’ll put everything in these three groups: the Favorites, the Contenders, and the Darkhorses.  So let’s get to it!

Heisman Hopefuls

The Favorites: Spencer Rattler, QB - Oklahoma Sooners Sam Howell, QB - North Carolina Tar Heels D’Eriq King, QB - Miami Hurricanes JT Daniels, QB - Georgia Bulldogs

The Contenders: DJ Uiagalelei, QB - Clemson Tigers Breece Hall, RB - Iowa State Cyclones Brock Purdy, QB - Iowa State Cyclones Kedon Slovis, QB - USC Trojans

The Darkhorses: Bryce Young, QB - Alabama Crimson Tide CJ Stroud, QB - Ohio State Buckeyes

the Meat Life Heisman Prediction: Spencer Rattler, QB - Oklahoma Sooners

This is probably the most obvious pick of the entire entry.  Rattler is in his third year under Head Coach Lincoln Riley’s system.  He made great strides the second half of the season last year.  Riley has a history of getting his QBs in a position to win the Heisman, with Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray winning back to back years and both Baker and Jalen Hurts getting invites to New York.  So this is Rattler’s award to lose.

The other favorites in the field: Sam Howell out of UNC gives me hella Baker vibes.  D’Eriq King, if he’s fully over the leg injury from last year, will be a big challenger.  And Georgia finally has a dynamic QB in JT Daniels.  As far as the challengers, DJ Uiagalelei showed well in relief of Trevor Lawrence against Notre Dame last year and looks the part.  Iowa State’s success and how much they lean on either Breece Hall or Brock Purdy will determine how far they get in Heisman race (as well as the Cyclones’ chances in the Big 12 and CFP).  And USC seems to have found the QB to lead them on the way back to previous glory.  I put both Bryce Young and CJ Stroud as darkhorse because we have yet to see them in full game mode.

Power 5 Conference Predictions

ACC

The Favorite: Clemson Tigers The Contenders: North Carolina Tar Heels, Miami Hurricanes The Darkhorses: Boston College Eagles, Virginia Tech Hokies the Meat Life ACC Prediction: North Carolina Tar Heels

Bold prediction?  Sure.  But this is probably the best chance anyone has had to take the ACC crown away from Clemson. It may very well end up as Clemson for the 7th straight time, but I like Howell and head coach Mack Brown for the Tar Heels.  It will certainly be something to watch.  King and the Hurricanes as well if King comes back from injury as his old self.

Big Ten

The Favorite: Ohio State Buckeyes The Contenders: Wisconsin Badgers, Penn State Nittany Lions The Darkhorses: Indiana Hoosiers, Iowa Hawkeyes the Meat Life Big Ten Prediction: Ohio State Buckeyes

Although Ohio State will be grooming a new QB to replace Justin Fields, there seems to be a gap between the Buckeyes and the rest of the Big Ten.  Defensively these others have been good enough, but only Indiana last season was able to push the Buckeyes to the brink offensively.

Big 12

The Favorite: Oklahoma Sooners The Contenders: Iowa State Cyclones The Darkhorses: Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs the Meat Life Big 12 Prediction: Oklahoma Sooners

Iowa State will get a second crack at challenging Oklahoma for conference supremacy this season.  Oklahoma gets Iowa State at home this season, so that’s a plus for the Sooners.  And the Sooners are fielding their best defense they’ve had in the last decade.  Texas will be interesting, lots of hype behind Casey Thompson at QB...but it’s Texas.  Oklahoma State will get to see if QB Spencer Sanders can take that leap.

Pac-12

The Favorite: Oregon Ducks The Contenders: USC Trojans, Washington Huskies, Utah Utes The Darkhorses: Arizona State Sun Devils, Colorado Buffaloes the Meat Life Pac-12 Prediction: USC Trojans

As previously stated, Slovis could be what the Trojans have been looking for to get back to success, so I’m counting on him to lead the Trojans back to the top of the Pac-12.  Oregon obviously going to do its best to defend its weird Pac-12 title from last season.  Washington didn’t get to play in the conference title game due to COVID, so they may challenge Oregon in the north.  Utah always has a solid squad to challenge for the conference title.

SEC

The Favorite: Alabama Crimson Tide The Contenders: Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies The Darkhorses: Florida Gators, LSU Tigers the Meat Life SEC Prediction: Georgia Bulldogs

Another bold pick from me, although that’s not to say Alabama can’t win the conference or a national title.  But Georgia finally has a triggerman in JT Daniels and Alabama’s QB is inexperienced.  Texas A&M enjoyed a great run last season derailed by Bama.  They could challege but they are going to break in a new QB.  Florida could challenge if they grew back a defense.  And LSU is a good offense away from being great.

College Football Playoff Predictions

Yep, I made the homer pick this time around.  The Sooners have the best all-around team they’ve fielded in quite some time.  For years it has been offensive-heavy, but last year they depended on their defense to win some games.  I don’t want to jinx things, but this team has the best chance in the last decade to get their eighth national title.  I’m hoping for big things.  So don’t let me down!  BOOMER SOONER

Poll of the week

Charlie Baker, Larry Hogan and Phil Scott should get T-shirts made up. In the first quarter of 2018, according to Morning Consult, they were the first-, second- and fourth-most-popular governors in America.1 And that’s despite sharing one surprising commonality: They are Republicans in three of the country’s bluest states. If they were a band, they’d be called Maroon Three — red castaways enisled in a sea of blue.

This week, Morning Consult released their updated ranking of America’s most popular governors, and, like last quarter again, Baker and Hogan topped the list. A full 69 percent of voters in Massachusetts — whose FiveThirtyEight partisan lean2 is 24 points more Democratic-leaning than the nation at large — approved of the job Baker was doing, while only 17 percent disapproved. The story was almost exactly the same in Maryland, another D+24 state: Hogan received a 68 percent approval rating and a 17 percent disapproval rating.

But Scott might get voted off the island. While he had a 65-21 approval-disapproval rating among Vermonters in the first quarter, he has fallen to 47 percent approval, 42 percent disapproval in this week’s findings, tarnishing his both-sides-of-the-street cred. The likeliest reason for the plummet in his popularity is a landmark gun-control law he signed in April amid protests in this historically gun-friendly state.

The new numbers cast doubt on the widely held assumption that Scott will cruise to re-election in 2018. But if he is indeed in danger, it may be in the Aug. 14 GOP primary rather than the general election. That’s because his popularity has eroded dramatically among Vermont’s Republicans, dropping by 26 points since last quarter. According to Morning Consult, Scott amazingly now has a higher approval rating among Democrats (who approve of him 61 percent to 31 percent) than Republicans (who disapprove 56 percent to 41 percent). If he survives his primary challenge from a pro-gun business owner, Scott still starts in a good position to win the votes of the state’s many Democrats.

And he’s not alone in his cross-party appeal. Baker is about equally popular among Democrats (who approve of him 70 percent to 17 percent) and Republicans (who approve 69 percent to 20 percent). Hogan can’t boast the same, but I imagine he’s still pretty happy with his support across the political spectrum: 62 percent of Democrats approve of his performance vs. 23 percent who disapprove. Republicans approve of him 82 percent to 10 percent.

Those numbers sound impressive — and they are — but they’re not as unusual as you might think. Support for governors frequently defies partisanship, at least if you define “partisanship” by people’s presidential preferences. Gubernatorial elections have gotten more nationalized in recent decades, but many voters still see state and federal elections as fundamentally different ballgames. There is basically no correlation between each governor’s net approval rating3 in the latest Morning Consult poll and his or her state’s partisan lean. Some governors are right in line with the partisanship of their states, such as Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee (a +18 net approval rating in D+13 Washington). But others have brands that distinguish them from their parties and make them way more popular (or unpopular) than partisanship alone would predict.

We can quantify each governor’s “Popularity Above Replacement Governor” (or PARG) by measuring the distance between their net approval rating and their state’s partisan lean. By this measurement, Scott is still doing pretty well. He’s 31 points more popular than a generic Republican “should” be in Vermont, good for the seventh-highest score in the country.

Note: A Democratic governor with a net approval of +2 in an R+7 state has a PARG of +9 (2+7 = 9). If the same state had a Republican governor with the same approval rating, the PARG would be -5 (2-7= -5). Alaska’s Bill Walker was omitted from this list because he’s an independent.

It’s not surprising that the two governors with the highest PARG are also the two most popular governors overall. Think about it: If a governor appeals only to their own party, there’s a ceiling on how popular they can become. (Even the most lopsided state in the 2016 election, Wyoming, gave only 68 percent of its votes to President Trump.) To break through that barrier, you need to have crossover appeal. When you’re a Republican in a dark-red state, there’s no real incentive to build on that base — you’re going to win your next election anyway. But Republicans in blue states (and Democrats in red states) are forced to win over voters on the other side. Otherwise, they can’t get elected. As long as those voters continue to approve of their actions in office, the sky’s the limit for these governors’ approval ratings.

Other polling nuggets

An NBC News/Marist poll that was making the rounds Wednesday included some stunning numbers from a trio of Midwestern states. When asked whether Trump deserves re-election, Michigan voters said 62 percent to 28 percent that someone else should be given a chance. Minnesota voters agreed 60 percent to 30 percent, as did Wisconsin voters, 63 percent to 31 percent. The problem, though, with these types of polls is that a presidential election is a choice, not a referendum. It’s easy for voters to hear a question like that and measure up Trump against their ideal candidate. But the Democrats’ 2020 nominee won’t be every voter’s ideal candidate, and Trump won’t lose these states by 30-plus points, either.

Americans are split on Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. According to a Quinnipiac poll, 40 percent of voters said the Senate should confirm him, while 41 percent said it should not. Eighty percent of Republicans but only 11 percent of Democrats said Kavanaugh should be confirmed.

33 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki this month, according to an ABC/Washington Post poll; 50 percent disapprove. That’s in line with the Quinnipiac poll, which found 27 percent said the summit was a success, while 52 percent said it was a failure.

33 percent of Americans said they think the FBI is “biased against the Trump administration,” as opposed to “just trying to do their job,” according to a Marist poll. That’s up from 23 percent in February.

A poll from the Pew Research Center found a decline in the FBI’s favorability from 71 percent in September 2016 to 65 percent now. That may not seem like much of a change, but the topline numbers mask a growing partisan divide.

A Monmouth University poll shows that Democrat Conor Lamb has a double-digit lead on Republican Keith Rothfus in Pennsylvania’s 17th District. The district was newly drawn from bits of other districts by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, making this the only House race that pits incumbents against each other.

A YouGov poll found that 49 percent of Americans said they believe it is either “definitely” or “probably” true that millions of illegal votes were cast in the 2016 presidential election. That includes 42 percent of Democrats as well as 59 percent of Republicans.

In addition to the governors survey, Morning Consult also released job approval numbers for every member of the Senate. Vermont’s Bernie Sanders had the highest approval rating, while Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell had the highest disapproval rating.

70 percent of Americans said in a YouGov poll that, of the five senses, they would miss sight the most if they lost it; 7 percent said they would miss hearing the most, 5 percent said taste, 3 percent said touch, and 2 percent said smell.

48 percent of registered voters said in a Morning Consult poll that the label “milk” should not be used to market non-dairy beverages; 23 percent said the label should be used. That comes after the head of the FDA suggested last week that non-dairy products may not meet the FDA’s official definition of milk, noting that “an almond doesn’t lactate.”

Trump approval

This week, Trump’s net approval rating sits at -11.7 percentage points, according to our tracker: 41.3 percent approve of his job performance and 53 percent disapprove. Last week, the spread was a bit smaller, at -11.0 points (a 41.8 percent approval rating compared with a 52.8 percent disapproval rating). He was slightly more popular a month ago, when his net approval rating was -9.5 points. Back then, 42.2 percent approved and 51.7 percent disapproved of his performance.

Generic ballot

According to FiveThirtyEight’s model of generic congressional ballot polling, 48.1 percent of voters prefer Democrats and 39.9 percent prefer Republicans. That 8.2-point margin has reverted to the mean a bit from Democrats’ unusually wide 9.3-point lead (Democrats 48.7 percent, Republicans 39.4 percent) last week, but it’s definitely much better for them than the 5.7-point lead (Democrats 46.4 percent, Republicans 40.7 percent) they held this time last month.

College football predictions for 2021 bowl games, Playoff semifinals, national championship

Bowl Season returns in 2021-22 with a schedule that includes 43 bowl games between FBS teams.

While College Football Playoff expansion might be in the works, this year marks the eighth season of the four-team playoff. This year’s College Football Playoff championship game is Jan. 10 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The year’s semifinals are Dec. 31 at the Capital One Orange Bowl and Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Sporting News’ Playoff picks are more of the same. Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma have combined for 20 of the 28 total playoff appearances. Yet those four schools have yet to all make the Playoff in the same season.

Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M

The Aggies and Irish get to settle last year’s playoff a year too late on a smaller stage. Both teams have quarterback battles worth watching in fall camp, but we’d more interested in the running backs in this one. Isaiah Spiller and Kyren Williams are both dark-horse Heisman candidates. This will be a fun table-setter for the rest of the New Year’s Day Six.

PlayStation First Bowl: Coastal Carolina vs. North Carolina

The Chanticleers are our Group of 5 selection, and some of that is based on Cincinnati’s tough nonconference schedule against Indiana and Notre Dame. The Sun Belt gets their due, and Grayson McCall gets matched up across North Carolina’s Sam Howell, who leads the Tar Heels to their second straight NY6 bowl appearance under Mack Brown. 

Rose Bowl Game: USC vs. Wisconsin

USC and Wisconsin met in the Rose Bowl in 1953 and 1963, and this matches up the Pac-12 champion against the Big Ten runner-up. Kedon Slovis and Graham Mertz make it an intriguing matchup, but with these teams is comes down to who can the ball. It will be nice to have the Tournament of Roses Parade back, too. 

Allstate Sugar Bowl: Iowa State vs. Georgia

The Bulldogs are forced to settle for a fourth straight New Year’s Day Six Bowl appearance unless JT Daniels can lead a Playoff run. Will that turn up any pressure on Kirby Smart? Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: Oklahoma vs. Clemson

This would be the more entertaining matchup given it features two of the top three quarterbacks in SN’s Top 25 QB rankings. Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei and Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler would put on an offensive show in this one. Which program faces more pressure? The Sooners are 0-4 in CFP semifinals, and the Tigers have been routed in their last two appearances.

More of the same. Until the CFP expands to 12 teams, this matchup will continue to pop up given the talent level assembled on both sides. The Crimson Tide and Tigers have split four playoff matchups the last seven years, and this time both schools travel north to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. How college football’s AP poll will work this fall

This is how the college football rankings will work during a season compromised by the pandemic.

The 2020 College Football season is going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Decimated by concerns over Covid-19, a vast number of the best teams in the sport won’t be playing this fall, instead hoping to perhaps hold some kind of competition in the spring. How that will work is currently unknown, but what we do know is how the rankings system will operate for the small field continuing to play, and it’s going to be weird.

This week the first rankings for the 2020 season will be released, and at first glance they’ll look largely the same as past years. After one week of play things are going to get weird.

What is happening with the rankings system?

The initial rankings will be determined exactly how it has in the past. Every team will be considered, making the initial rankings a snapshot of how the 2019 season ended. It’s widely expected that Clemson will be No. 1, with Ohio State, LSU and Alabama shortly behind. This will be the last ranking with any sense of normalcy.

Voters are being asked to take non-competing teams out of consideration beginning Week 2. This means that no Big 10 or Pac 12 teams will be ranked (among others). Quickly the rankings will shift from being representative of the entire sport, and turned into a ranking of just those playing — which makes sense, but will also be profoundly strange. A constant reminder that the 2020 season will not be a normal one.

Who will naturally disappear from the rankings?

It’s tough to know for sure what the rankings would look like, should these top teams still be playing in 2020 — however we have a pretty good idea of how many slots in the Top 25 would open due to play being postponed at numerous schools.

A total of 10 schools who finished 2019 ranked in the AP Top 25 will no longer receive recognition, including:

Ohio State (2)

Oregon (6)

Wisconsin (8)

Penn State (10)

Utah (11)

Michigan (14)

Iowa (16)

Minnesota (18)

Boise State (19)

USC (22)

Who stands to benefit from the rankings change?

Obviously the major conferences still playing will see the biggest boon. The ACC, Big 12 and SEC are positioned to make major gains in rankings due to the teams leaving. North Carolina, who was ranked Top 20 in preseason polls. could become a Top 10 team after a week due to the adjustments, with Texas and Texas A&M potentially making the Top 5.

Of course there will be asterisks associated with any of these teams, and plenty of questions about whether they “deserve” to be ranked so highly because of teams falling out of the rankings by default, but nonetheless it will lead to the perception that the SEC is completely dominating the sport. There is a very real chance the SEC could have as many as seven teams in the Top 10, and remain there for some time due to scheduling.

However, this also opens up chances for surprises.

For teams who feel like they’re constantly overlooked by voters, the condensed rankings lead to more chances for recognition on a national level. There remains a very real chance for a team to make a USF-like push to the top of the rankings due to their play, garnering the program long-standing recognition, which in turn will help with recruiting.

So while 2020 may not truly be indicative of which teams are the “best” in football, it will be refreshing to see the system shaking up — and one where voting variety may be broader than ever, even with a condensed field.

We still don’t really know how this season will play out.

Everything remains up in the air. Even under the assumption the season will begin is planned, and considering the ACC, Big 12, and SEC’s adamant belief they will play as normal, it remains to be seen whether that will actually take place.

Beyond the ever-present threat of potential coronavirus clusters exists a wider movement inside college football towards player empowerment. This could lead to more players choosing to opt out of the season, especially if conditions worsen. This could drastically change the complexion of the season, and all it takes is a key player on a ranked team to decide the risks are too great and everything could be turned on its head.

It remains to be seen whether the NCAA will extend eligibility to players who elect to sit out of 2020 over virus concerns. Players are fighting for a right to keep their eligibility, but it’s yet another unknown in an already bizarre situation.

So when the dust settles, what happens?

Assuming the season is actually played without any further postponements of delays, we should see a fairly predictable end to the season. Should the College Football Playoff continue as planned here’s how I see it ending up:

Clemson (1) vs. Oklahoma (4)

Alabama (2) vs. Georgia (3)

Whoever wins the National Championship will forever have as asterisk next to the title. Perhaps not literally, but in the minds of fans who will remember that 2020 was not a normal season, during a surreal year, in the midst of one of the most-bizarre periods in our lives. Now we just wait to see how everything will occur.

The Nittany Lions started the season 5-0 with two ranked wins, including one at Camp Randall Stadium against Wisconsin to open the year.

Now, the Nittany Lions travel to Columbus, where they haven’t won since 2011, to take on a white-hot Ohio State team.

The Buckeyes started the season 1-1, with a fairly resounding Week 1 over Minnesota followed by a 35-28 home loss to then-No. 12 Oregon, but have since won five in a row.

The Buckeyes’ defense has given up just 44 points in its last four games while quarterback C.J. Stroud has shown himself a fitting heir apparent to Justin Fields.

The Buckeyes’ median margin of victory since the Oregon loss is 47 points, thanks in large part to Stroud, receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson and running back Tre’Veyon Henderson.

Ohio State is No. 5 in the country and a win against No. 20 Penn State could put the Buckeyes squarely in the College Football Playoff picture yet again.

Is that too many bowl games? Given the outbreak of COVID-19 could threaten the season, we’re going to say absolutely not.

The bowl season concludes with the College Football Playoff championship game on Jan. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. This year’s semifinals are on Jan. 1 at the Rose Bowl Game and Sugar Bowl.

Bracket predictions: Who would have won the men’s NCAA tournament?

We played out the 2020 NCAA tournament in our heads after it was canceled by the Covid-19 pandemic.

We should be preparing for the best week on the American sports calendar right now. We should be joining office pools, filling out brackets, and doing research on potential Cinderellas like East Tennessee State and New Mexico State. We should be figuring out what excuse we’re going give our boss to call off work on Thursday and Friday. We should be getting ready for March Madness.

Instead, the 2020 NCAA tournament has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. While it’s unquestionably the right move (please stay home, people), it is still a massive bummer for the players who have worked all year for this moment, and for the fans who cherish the tournament every year.

The Monday after Selection Sunday is typically reserved for bracket predictions around your favorite websites. We’re not going to let a canceled tournament stop us.

Taking the most recent bracket projection from our Chris Dobbertean, — published on March 12 just before the tournament was cancelled — we have decided to still make some predictions on how the 2020 NCAA tournament would have played out. At least we can’t be proven wrong.

Here’s what the bracket looks like blank. Let’s go region by region and pick our winners.

South Region

Kansas anchors the South as the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. The Jayhawks blow out Prairie View A&M in their opener. They get USC in the Round of 32 after the Trojans defeat Saint Mary’s behind a big performance from star freshman center Onyeka Okongwu.

Ohio State outlasts a tough challenge from Yale and star big man Paul Atkinson. The Buckeyes face Seton Hall in the Round of 32 after the Akron’s defense has no answer for Myles Powell and company.

No. 6 Virginia’s championship defense ends early in the first round to Sam Merrill and Utah State in an upset that feels bigger than a No. 6 vs. No. 11. Utah State faces Maryland after Mark Turgeon’s team outlasts Missouri Valley winner Bradley.

No. 7 Providence also goes down early to Southern Conference winner East Tennessee State. Kentucky takes care of business vs. Boston U.

Here’s how the Round of 32 in the South would play out:

Okongwu continues to build his case as a potential top-five draft pick against Kansas in the Round of 32, the Jayhawks simply have too much talent and win easily.

Seton Hall blasts a talented Ohio State team to set up the most anticipated matchup of the Sweet 16 vs. Kansas.

Utah State — led by Merrill’s shot-making and the defense of sophomore center Neemias Queta — shock Maryland to reach the Sweet 16. Sorry, Terps.

We have our first true Cinderella in the Sweet 16 as East Tennessee State stuns Kentucky during a cold shooting night for the Wildcats. This Kentucky defense, ranked only No. 52 entering the tournament, simply can’t get enough stops late.

The race for the Final Four in the South

Kansas goes down in the Sweet 16 — and your office pool is officially wide open. Udoka Azubuike gets in foul trouble and sits most of the first half as Powell helps build a lead for Seton Hall. Devon Dotson leads a furious second half comeback for Kansas, but its shooters can’t find a rhythm — Kansas only got 25.3 percent of its points from three-pointers this season, which ranked No. 303 in America — and Seton Hall pulls the upset to move onto the Elite Eight.

Utah State vs. East Tennessee State is the Sweet 16 matchup no one saw coming. The Aggies likely wouldn’t have made the tournament without Merrill’s absurd game-winner to shock San Diego State in the title game of the Mountain West. The charmed run continues as they lock up the ETSU offense and move onto the Elite Eight.

Seton Hall makes the Final Four by beating Utah State in the Elite Eight. Junior 7-footer Sandro Mamukelashvili becomes a March Madness cult hero for his work against Queta. The Hall is onto the Final Four for the first time since 1989.

West Region

Gonzaga leads Northern Kentucky by just four points at halftime, but eventually pulls away for a blowout victory. The Bulldogs face Colorado in round two after Buffaloes star Tyler Bey dominates Oklahoma on both ends fo the floor to build hype as a potential first round draft pick.

Liberty won a game in the NCAA tournament last season, but Luka Garza and Iowa pull out a close one this year. Iowa faces Oregon after Ohio Valley champ Belmont can’t close out against the Ducks. We miss you, Rick Byrd.

BYU-Marquette is a thriller of a No. 6 vs. No. 11 game. Markus Howard gets one last March moment and hits nine three-pointers in the win. Marquette advances to face Duke after the Blue Devils beat North Texas in the final minute.

LSU and Texas Tech is one of the best games of the tournament. The Tigers’ No. 4 offense vs. Tech’s No. 9 defense produces an instant classic tournament game, but ultimately Chris Beard’s offense is enough is better than Will Wade’s defense, and the Red Raiders get the win.

San Diego State does its job vs. Eastern Washington.

Here’s how the Round of 32 in the West would play out:

Bey continues his NBA-breakout for Colorado, but Gonzaga’s top-ranked offense prevails and sends the ‘Zags to the Sweet 16.

Payton Pritchard is the star for Oregon to push the Ducks past Iowa and into the second weekend. Garza feasts inside for Iowa but his lack of defensive ability starts to show in March. It’s Oregon vs. Gonzaga in the Sweet 16.

Howard puts on a show, but Duke beats Marquette thanks to a dominant game from Vernon Carey Jr. The media can’t stop comparing him to Jahlil Okafor.

Texas Tech emerges as a betting favorite vs. San Diego State, but the Aztecs prevail over their doubters. Point guard Malachi Flynn hits a game-winner for SDSU to build his case as an All-American.

The race for the Final Four in the West

Pritchard has another brilliant game for Oregon, but the Zags’ No. 1 offense simply can’t be stopped by the Ducks’ No. 76 defense. Gonzaga is back in the Elite Eight and emerges as the favorite to win it all without Kansas around.

San Diego State and Duke comes down the wire. Carey feasts inside against a small Aztecs interior, but co-star Tre Jones struggles to get going against a fierce perimeter defense for SDSU. Matt Mitchell makes some incredible plays on both ends to burnish his reputation as a March cult hero. San Diego State controls the tempo — SDSU wants to play slow, Duke wants to play fast — and with it controls the game. A tough finish inside by Mitchell ends up being the game-winning basket. San Diego State is going to the Elite Eight. The country rejoices.

San Diego State gets a reality check vs. Gonzaga. The Aztecs earn the respect they fought for all season with a deep run through the tournament, but Gonzaga’s offense is just too much. This time it’s Killian Tillie who is the hero for the ‘Zags, getting hot from three and dropping some beautiful passes for assists. The ‘Zags are back in the Final Four for the second time in four years.

Midwest Region

Wintrop puts a scare in Baylor for a half, but the Bears’ defense eventually locks down and scores the easy victory. Baylor faces Houston in round two after the Cougars overcome a huge scoring effort from Alonzo Verge to knock off Arizona State in the No. 8 vs. No. 9 game.

Stephen F. Austin gets hot from three — 37.4 percent on the year — and takes advantage of a vulnerable Butler defense to score the upset in a No. 5 vs. No. 12 game. It’s the Lumberjacks’ third NCAA tournament victory in six years. SFA faces New Mexico State in the Round 32 after the Aggies edge Wisconsin in the opening round behind a powerful performance from Trevelin Queen, the best player on the floor.

Penn State knocks off Texas in the first round after the Longhorns knock off NC State in the play-in game. The Nittany Lions face Villanova in round two after the Wildcats win in the final minute vs. a tough Hofstra team.

Rutgers — making its first tournament appearance in 30 years — gets an opening-round win vs. West Virginia. They face Florida State in round two after the ‘Noles dominate Little Rock.

Here’s how the Round of 32 in the Midwest would play out:

Down goes Baylor. Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars take out the top-seeded Bears behind a great game from freshman guard Caleb Mills. The Bears are the first No. 1 seed to fall.

Queen stars again for New Mexico State and pushes the Aggies into the Sweet 16 with a decisive win over Stephen F. Austin. His NBA buzz is building.

Villanova takes out Penn State and Florida State makes short work of Rutgers.

The race for the Final Four in the Midwest

New Mexico State’s Cinderella run ends against No. 8 seed Houston. The Cougars are onto the Elite Eight thanks to a balanced scoring attack led by Quentin Grimes and DeJon Jarreau, who has bounced back from an underwhelming season in the tournament.

Florida State vs. Villanova is one of the best games of the tournament. Saddiq Bey puts on a show for the Wildcats from three-point range, while freshman forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl showcases his versatile floor game. The Seminoles advance thanks to a breakout game from freshman wing Patrick Williams, who is suddenly drawing lottery hype from NBA circles.

Houston is on the brink of a Final Four appearance before Devin Vassell rips their heart out. Florida State’s sophomore wing hits two three-pointers and forces a late turnover to put the Seminoles in the Final Four. It’s finally Leonard Hamilton’s time.

East Region

Dayton handles Jalen Pickett and 16th-seeded Sienna with ease. The Flyers face Florida in the second round after a tremendous No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup vs. Arizona. The Gators are a dangerous eighth-seed.

Juwan Howard gets his first NCAA tournament victory as Michigan beats Cincinnati on a late hook shot from Xavier Simpson. They face Louisville for a rematch of the 2013 national championship game as Jordan Nwora and company take care of Anthony Lamb and Vermont.

Auburn beats Indiana in the opening round behind a big game from Isaac Okoro, who flashes his passing chops and builds his case as a potential top-10 NBA Draft pick. Auburn faces a dangerous third-seed in Michigan State in round two after Cassius Winston and company knock off UC Irvine.

Illinois is back in the tournament for the first time since 2013, and get a win against a surging UCLA team. Creighton is the Illini’s opponent in round two after the Jays get the job done against 15-seed North Dakota State.

Here’s how the Round of 32 in the East would play out:

Florida has Dayton on the ropes, but a late jumper from Jalen Crutcher gives Dayton the win. The Gators let it slip away.

Louisville breaks Michigan’s heart again in the NCAA tournament. Freshman guard David Johnson is the hero and starts to become one of the most talked about players in the field.

Xavier Tillman and Michigan State win a dramatic game over Auburn. The Tigers used all their tournament magic on their Final Four run last year.

Illinois gives Creighton its best shot, but the Bluejays’ No. 3-ranked offense is too much to handle behind point guard Marcus Zegarowski, who looks healthy after recovering from an ankle injury. Greg McDermott has finally made the second weekend.

The race for the Final Four in the East

Dayton vs. Louisville is another classic. Johnson continues his star turn while Malik Williams shows a versatile skill set from the center position. Still, Dayton prevails behind 30-point effort from Obi Toppin, who continues to build his case for national player of the year.

Creighton takes an early lead on Michigan State, but eventually the Bluejays just can’t get enough stops to advance to the Elite Eight. Aaron Henry, the sophomore wing for the Spartans, pours in four three-pointers to push MSU to victory.

In the best game of the Elite Eight, Dayton and Michigan State go down to the wire. It’s Toppin again who is the hero for the Flyers, scoring inside on Tillman late to secure the win. Dayton is going to the Final Four for the first time since 1967.

The Final Four

Gonzaga vs. Seton Hall is a beautiful showcase of offensive firepower. Myles Powell continues his climb as a college basketball legend by draining five three-pointers in the first half, but Gonzaga’s balanced offense is eventually too much. Corey Kispert goes off for 19 points to lead the Zags back to the national championship game.

Dayton vs. Florida State can’t live up the hype. The Flyers get hot from three early with Rodney Chatman having the game of his life. Vassell and MJ Walker do all they can to get the deficit down to single-digits, but the Flyers pull away to reach the title game.

Dayton vs. Gonzaga for the title.

And the winner is ....

Ryan Mikesell hits three three-pointers in the first half to help Dayton build an early lead. Joel Ayayi leads the Gonzaga comeback with some beautiful floaters near the rim, but Toppin and Dayton are too much. Toppin goes off for 32 points and is named Most Outstanding Player.

Toppin becomes a top-five NBA Draft pick and Anthony Grant is the hottest coach in the country. Dayton is your national champion.
