I recently watched the (absolutely excellent) 1995 bbc adaptation of pride and prejudice so I am READY for THIS MASH UP

I had to resist real hard just going “jane austin” and leaving it as is

1: historical au + 60: poorly timed confessionmughal period, late 16th century india. the court of emperor akbar, who ruled over arguably the greatest empire in the world. (...okay this isn’t jane austin whoops). killua’s the son of a safavid merchant, whose family had sent him to court in part to ensure the success of their spice trade to europe, and also because illumi’s already there as a bureaucrat and what better way to cut his teeth on being an heir than in the most luxurious courts. 

and the mughal court is luxurious. it is awe-inspiring, even, glittering and glorious and filled to the brim with new ideas and bureaucracies and monies. killua’s been told it’s his destiny and his duty to make the zoldycks known to the right people, in the right circles--the invisible hand guiding the market, linking south asia and persia with wealth and power. 

gon’s the captain of the caravan linking isfahan and agra, one known to be trustworthy enough that silva hires him practically sight-unseen. no one’s really sure where he came from originally--he dresses strangely, his accent isn’t from arabia or india or even europe (let alone his skin color), but that’s not as important as his steady hand at the head of the caravan, able to calm whatever animals he comes across. he knows a lot for a captain, about trade and religion and medicine and sanitation, and well. look it’s a killugon AU, you know by the time they get to india, killua’s in love. in love with gon’s descriptions of the world outside of courts and wealthy merchants, in love with the ease which gon handles himself in his motley crew, in love with a future made bright not by gold but by sunlight. and for the first time in his life, he doesn’t want to work in court. he wants to keep running caravans with gon. and gon wants to work with him, as equals--keep running through agra, around the subcontinent and beyond. anywhere, over any land or sea, because this is what he wants to do.

of course, killua admits that to gon right as illumi shows up and reveals gon’s been cursed by the sea.
