A while ago, someone on Twitter made a comment about the how Ultraman series is something you experience as you watch it, that simply watching the shows can’t really be put into words, but the result is something personal to each fan. Ultraman Decker and Blazar especially bring this feeling to mind, with feats in each shows feeling like watching spectacles. In essence, the feeling of hope.
That’s how it feels watching Gotchard, Saber, Wizard, Ghost, and other “polarizing shows.” There’s a hopeful message conveyed to the audience that is, unfortunately, ridiculed by the larger fanbase simply because it doesn’t line up with their image of “The Best Kamen Rider Show Ever.” Not everything needs to be drama heavy, and characters are allowed to just “be,” which is kind of how the older Showa shows were structured. Things happen because, guess what, things happen! Not everything needs an immediate reason to “be.”
Which makes it all the more personally frustrating when tokutwt and tokutuber bandwagons simply go “Gotchard/Ghost/Zero-One/show that isn’t specifically this is bad, dur hur hur,” and refuse to give a more valid reason than “it’s not Geats/Kuuga/Faiz/show that is specifically this” or “this show should have been written by Inoue.” Really? It’s probable I’m just preaching to the wind, but… really? Even Gavv, the new show that hasn’t come out yet, is already being judged because we didn’t have information on the main writer put the gate when the main visual was revealed. And then there are comments like, “Well, if you like it so much, why aren’t you saying anything?” Because we don’t need to comment on everything. Cool, Michinaga said “Geats” in the same tone as every other time he said it. Doesn’t mean everyone needed to know about it because, chances are, we watched that scene, too!
Another thing, but since when was Kamen Rider just not allowed to have breathers? Sometimes we all need a break from the heavy story, which is why filler episodes are added to the show. Which is something that Super Sentai does often, Donbrothers and King-Ohger notwithstanding. Boonboomger can have a fun filler arc with a veteran of the series, but we can’t have a funny Gotchard episode where the Kitchen ICHINOSE Alliance is hunting for the Chemies? Of course, there’s always “too much filler,” like with LuPat or Zyuohger, but even then, Kamen Rider can’t have filler??
Again, people have preferences and such, and of course the shows aren’t going to please everyone. All the shows mentioned above have their flaws, Ghost especially, but we can still enjoy them! And for the less-liked shows, sometimes we do have to “reach” to explain what we like about them! We can’t all be fans of Geats and just go “Geats good send tweet.” Sometimes it helps to go searching for an explanation to why you like a show! And perhaps… you don’t need a reason to enjoy a show! Wow, imagine that!
TLDR; there is no “perfect Tokusatsu show”, get used to it, and stop getting butthurt when you don’t get the show you wanted.
