it's funny although a little exasperating how artists designing "princess" or medieval-esque gowns really do not understand how those types of clothes are constructed. We're all so used to modern day garments that are like... all sewn together in one layer of cloth, nobody seems to realize all of the bits and pieces were actually attached in layers.
So like look at this mid-1400's fit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to get the effect of that orange gown, you've got
chemise next to the skin like a slip (not visible here) (sometimes you let a bit of this show at the neckline) (the point is not to sweat into your nice clothes and ruin them)
kirtle, or undergown. (your basic dress, acceptable to be seen by other people) this is the puffing bits visible at the elbow, cleavage, and slashed sleeve. It's a whole ass dress in there. Square neckline usually. In the left picture it's probably the mustard yellow layer on the standing figure.
Specific Italian style gown. This is the orange diamond pattern part. It's also the bit of darker color visible in the V of the neckline.
surcoat, or sleeveless overgown. THIS is the yellow tapestry print. In the left picture it's the long printed blue dress on the standing figure
if you want to get really fancy you can add basically a kerchief or netting over the bare neck/shoulders. It can be tucked into the neckline or it can sit on top. That's called a partlet.
the best I can tell you is that they were technically in a mini-ice-age during this era. Still looks hot as balls though.
Coats and surcoats are really more for rich people though, normal folks will be wearing this look:

tbh I have a trapeze dress from target that looks exactly like that pale blue one. ye olden t-shirt dress.
You can see how the “renaissance festival” style of kirtle (left) is a modern recreation of this look (right)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so now look here:
Tumblr media
(this is a princess btw) both pieces are made of the same blue material so it looks as if it's all one dress, but it's not. The sleeves you're seeing are part of the gown/coat, and the ermine fur lined section on top is a sideless overgown/surcoat. You can tell she's rich as fuck because she's got MORE of that fur on the inside of the surcoat hem.
okay so now look at these guys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left image (that's Mary Magdelene by the way) you can see the white bottom layer peeking out at the neckline. That's a white chemise (you know, underwear). The black cloth you see behind her chest lacing is a triangular panel pinned there to Look Cool tm. We can call that bit the stomacher. Over the white underwear is the kirtle (undergown) in red patterned velvet, and over the kirtle is a gown in black. Right image is the same basic idea--you can see the base kirtle layer with a red gown laced over it. She may or may not have a stomacher behind her lacing, but I'm guessing not.
I've kind of lost the plot now and I'm just showing you images, sorry. IN CONCLUSION:
Tumblr media
you can tell she's a queen because she's got bits I don't even know the NAMES of in this thing. Is that white bit a vest? Is she wearing a vest OVER her sideless surcoat? Girl you do not need this many layers!

11, 17, 39 & kind of a toughie but,,, in the best most well meaning way: 25 <3 KEESES MWAH love u jo hope ur night is going a bit better <3333
11.) what is one song that’s able to bring you to tears? my dearest friend and enemy by tamino is the newst addition to the list. but overall you and me and the 10,000 wars by the indigo girls is my go-to when i need a good cry. i have most definitely mentioned it before but it feels so much like home and being homesick and warm and safe and faraway... love it <3
17.) what’s your favorite painting? and describe how it makes you feel? as per usual it's impossible for me to pick just one but i've narrowed it down to my top 2 (my no. 1 + hon. mention tbh)
Jusepe de Ribera, Maria Maddalena in Meditazione - easily one of the most formative paintings i have ever seen. i can't remember when i first saw it, but if you made me pick one painting it would probably be this one. the way mary magdelene gazes down at the skull, holding it in her hand, holding it up to her as if it can gaze back... i think the painting is meant to be sad (haven't revisited any biblical texts since for almost a decade so idk) and there is grief there but most of all i think this is a quiet and tender painting. on a personal note, i have a generally positive association with skull imagery and am fond of them, so i guess the feeling i get from this painting...is a very quiet, tender love. even if it's the kind that's only in passing that you feel for someone you've never met, never could have met, but have encountered at this moment in some way nonetheless.
Vincent van Gogh, Wheat Fields after the Rain - if someone asked me what painting most reminds me of home, i would definitely say this. it's not the *closest* approximation to the area i grew up in looks like but if i would want someone to see my home through my eyes it would be this painting. it's just so... peaceful, warm with a cool breeze that makes you shiver if you linger in the shade a touch too long. like late spring or early summer with the slight variation in colors and sky brushed with clouds. it's what i want summer to be. it's the parts of the warmer seasons i look forward to. before the smothering heat and the smoke from forest fires that chokes out the air even if it has to wait til august to do so, there are cool nights and it's not too hot to stand under the sun and there's a promise of a thunderstorm a few days away <3 it’s green the lilacs are in bloom and it’s just lovely <3 this is what home feels like TO ME. if i could live in a painting it would be this.
39.) what is your favorite gemstone? why? oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh oh m- first of all FANTASTIC question. second... it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE for me to choose but i would have to say... AGATE followed closely (usually tied!) with JADE... agate is just. wikipedia refers to it as "common" which means there is a lot of it in the world and i love that :) there are multiple types that can be found all over but they are all so beautiful and unique on their own (as are ALL rocks ehehe) (ex: 1, 2, 3) tbh i love agate and carnelian and jade and quartz and turqouise and jasper and and and BUT currently. my favorite is agate because its vibes are 10/10 and it never fails to amaze me just how VIBRANT nature can be :) also i think its cool that the earth made like a million different kinds of rocks and then made different types of THOSE rocks <3
25.) if you could choose only one meal to eat for the remainder of your life, which would you choose? HDAKSDKDJKADASJDHSAJSADHASDHJDHJDASHD OMGGGG this is SUCH a good question because what i immediately think of "what am i least likely to get sick of" and i would have to say. pho. if i could ONLY eat pho for the restofmylife. you would never hear me complain. best broth on planet earth lovely greens yummy meat great noodles not to mention adding limes and bean sprouts and the sauces and such <3 so much you can do with it and put in it and it's always warm and YUMMY <3

I’m really tempted to make two OC blogs (or even a multimuse OC blog) for two ocs: Gerard Stuart and Susanne Magdelene (aka Gary Stu and Mary Sue–Magdelene is a reference to Mary Magdelene from the bible). Not that I have the time for it yet, but one day… As a bit of a social experiment. I’m gonna decorate them as much as possible and write in the most bland way possible. Gary would be a really typical, bland “bad boy Is probably a vampire is probably also a demon and is probably a stalker” type, and Mary would be “I’m smol and kawaii with a horrible backstory and weird traits like being half vampire half demon half angel half fairy but don’t worry! None of it seems to actually matter!” And I’m going to learn how to html code and everything to make my replies as unreadable as possible and make my blog theme a tiny 500 px by 500 px container theme that has a black background and dark grey text and has the weird thing where it’s blurred out at the bottom. And I’m gonna have pop up rules pages.
This would be a social experiment to find out if it’s really true that a fancy blog theme and formatting matters more than character development skills and writing. I’m gonna make the subjectively worst characters in existence and write in the most subjectively horrible way (as in “she smiled. She laughed. She said "hi!” She waved at him.“). One day man… One day. Tbh though I’d love to do this, like actually. Maybe once my school life calms down again and I have time on my hands, I’ll repurpose my least used blog to make them.
