Hi! First of all I'd like to tell you that it's a real therapy for me to visit your site and you yourself seem very nice. But there something that really bothers me in the Preacher fandom. (This is probably going to be long and anon messages are limited so there will be more parts). To be continued...

Part I: So what really grinds my gear is that fans, especially on tumblr are like "aww Cassidy is such a teddy bear I hope the writers will leave him like this and won't turn him into a bad guy like he is in the comics". I love Cassidy at all kinds of levels, but hello? Have you seen Season 1 where it was revealed that he abused/killed several women and confessed Jesse that he is pretty much a shit person. Let me remind you that he is a JUNKIE, DRUG ADDICT VAMPIRE for christ sake! 2 B continued

Part II: Yes, he might be sweet to Tulip, a friend to Jesse and can be nice but that's just the surface. Let's be real: if the situation would demand he would totally reveal his true colors. Imagine if the vampire hunters are about to kill him, what he will do? I'm pretty damn sure that he would give up his so-called friends just to save his own skin. It's basic human (or vampire) instinct. Still continuing...

Part III: I really, reallly hope that the writers will stick to the source material and sooner or later - maybe sooner - will show us Cassidy's real vampire, dangerous side. That's all for now, I'm out. Peace. *drops the mic* 

LOL I agree. I’ve never read the comics myself but I have read ABOUT them.

I kinda go two-fold:

Side A: I want them to reveal Cassidy’s true colors in terms of making him more like his comic-book countepart. I actually think Joe Gilgun wants this, too. He’s complained several times in interviews about this season that he doesn’t have too many fight scenes and that he thinks Cassidy’s storyline kinda gets pushed away from violence and more into ‘irish sidekick’. He seems a little mad that Cassidy’s story is mostly focusing around his interpersonal struggles and hiding feelings or whatever than actual fights. But who knows - maybe I read too much into that.

I feel about Comic!Cassidy how I feel about Bert McCracken of The Used (bear with me). Bert McCracken portrays himself as a sensitive, romantic, sweet, loving, friend-to-everyone, easy-going, humorous fellow. He writes a lot of love songs, talks about how much he loves to be around those he loves, tells the fans they are his world, he makes people laugh. He is very magnetic and charismatic and is very outgoing and personable. BUT he is also MANIPLUATIVE and he is also SELFISH and he is also written SONGS about how he is at LEAST verbally abusive, possibly emotionally abusive, and then recently has even CONFESSED OUTRIGHT to being so on at least one occasion. He is a liar, he has a foul-mouth, and he is also a junkie.

BUT BUT BUT - just because he is all those negative things doesn’t mean he isn’t ALSO all those lovely positives I listed first. People are complicated, people are multi-dimensional. Bert is made up of good and bad things. And guess what - SO IS CASSIDY.

Cassidy CONFESSED to being a lazy, lying, self-obsessed, drug abusing, cheating fornicator with a filthy mouth. And what have we seen of that so far? The drug abuse and the high sex drive. He lied a bit in season 1 before he trusted Jesse, and he lies a lot for Tulip but you KNOW that isnt the lying he MEANS. Those are little white lies compared to the ones he was surely talking about. But we haven’t seen it. We heard ONE MENTION of ‘attempted homicide’. ONE. Yeah, we’ve seen him kill a bunch of people OUT OF SELF-PRESERVATION but we haven’t seen the side of him that ATTEMPTED to kill A WOMAN and WHY???? Guaranteed she wasn’t a vampire hunter. More likely she was someone he knew intimately. He probably killed her out of jealousy or rage or maybe she tried to leave him and he was so fucked out of his mind that he decided he would rather see her dead then let her leave him.

We haven’t seen Bad Cassidy. We have seen Comic-Relief Irish Sidekick Cassidy. Yes, he can still be that, but that’s not true to the comics at all.

I am hoping perhaps that season 3 will delve into who Cassidy REALLY is. Season 1 we explored what makes Jesse, Jesse. Season 2 looks like it’s setting up a major Tulip arch - so I am guessing we’re going to explore what makes Tulip, Tulip in s2. I am hoping that this means s3 will be exploring CASSIDY’s true colors and what makes him, him.

Side B: Cassidy as he is in the show now is adorable as fuck. He is very teddy bear. He is the friend everyone wants to have - the boyfriend everyone wants to have. He’s certainly not being portrayed negatively at all. I would LOVE to live in denial and want this to never change. I would LOVE to sit here and be UNPROBLEMATIC FAV LOOK HOW GOOD HE IS HE’S SO PURE.

I would LOVE to do that. I would LOVE for it to be that simple.

BUT at the same time - I know it can’t be. They might as well take the comics and wipe their own shitty asses with it. That’s the amount of respect the writers would show the source material if they didn’t make Cassidy problematic. I know that the show doesn’t need to be identical but CHARACTERIZATION is pretty central and probably shouldn’t be altered. Cassidy should be problematic AT BEST.

Summary: I have complicated feelings on Cassidy in the show. I want him to be uncomplicated and honest and unproblematic. I want him to be a teddy bear because it makes it easier to LIKE him un-apologetically. Doesn’t everyone want that? Doesn’t everyone want to love someone uncomplicated? BUT at the same time I want him to be complicated, I want him to be more true to his origins because it would be interesting. I’d probably be alright no matter what happens but I think it would be unjust for them to not portray him like he was in the comics. Tulip is complicated and can be shitty. Jesse is complicated and can be shitty. So far Cassidy has not been shown to be shitty. What makes him so special? It’s coming. The other shoe is going to drop. It’s gotta.
