Let’s talk about understanding nuance in people’s interpretations of fiction!🎉
Liking Lottie, Misty, Shauna, etc. ≠ Excusing/justifying SA
Liking Travis ≠ Excusing/justifying misogyny
Liking any character ≠ Condoning all of their actions
Hating a male character ≠ Misandry
Hating a female character ≠ Misogyny
Fans engage (or disengage) with characters for countless reasons—relatability, intrigue, or narrative complexity—and reducing those motivations to surface level, binary takes such as the ones above undermines genuine discussions about character depth and storytelling. No one is condoning the actions of these characters. We’re here to watch them do terrible things. We all appreciate how complex this show and its characters are, so let’s appreciate how complex people’s interpretations of it are, too.
#for example#I’m not seeing anyone saying I love Travis because he’s a misogynist!#I am however seeing people saying that they like Travis because he has an interesting story arc or he shows care towards others in the grou#I will raise an eyebrow at someone who ONLY likes Travis and none of the other female characters though (but does that even exist?)#and I will also raise an eyebrow at anyone trying to say Travis didn’t do anything wrong!#or Lottie/Shauna/Misty/Nat/etc didn’t do anything wrong!#but I’m not seeing anyone saying those things because the reasons we like and hate these characters are more complex than that do you see
