Today it is unusual. Fanart and, in addition, a crossover. Dany and Bohun. Both lively, both hot-blooded. The conflagration of their hearts can destroy. “Skrzetuski’s sharp glance focused at once on Bohun, search­ing for a challenge, but the Steppe raider’s face beamed with such open friendliness that the most experienced eye would have been deceived. The young lieutenant was especially curi­ous about this Cossack hero because his exploits had become a byword in the Ukraine, and so he watched him carefully assess­ing what he saw.”

“And what he saw was a slim, young, dark-complexioned man with finely chiseled features, a high forehead and thick black hair combed down in jagged wisps above curving eye­brows. His strong white teeth gleamed with every smile.”

Jan, drink some water, because wine obviously keeps you thirsty.

Careful witht he insults, Jan, Jurko has the upper hand here.

“Traitor yourself! Viper! Dog! Is that how you pay for our hospitality?”

Yeah Jurko, no wine spilling, Jan doesn’t like that. But since he likes you much more, he might be lenient with you.

“To a safe homecoming,” Pan Jan raised a toast.

“Home?” The man looked up with quick curiosity “So you’ve been away somewhere? Where did you go?”

‘A long way. To the Crimea.”

“Carrying ransom, were you?”

“Not this time. I went to see the Khan.”

“I’ve been among the Tartars myself a few times.” The Cos­sack’s voice was soft with remembered moments of violence and danger. “Maybe I never got as far as the Khan’s palace,” he grinned like a wolf, “but even that might happen if the news we hear turns out to be true.”

‘And what news is that?”

“What people say about a war in Spring. All the Ukraine is talking about it. . . Ey “—and the young Cossack laughed with savage pleasure-”if we don’t get to dance a little in the Khan’s seraglio, what with the Great Prince leading us, we’ll never get to do it!”

Pan Jan smiled. There was such admiration for Prince Yeremi in the Cossack’s words that it quite won him over and his own voice lost its guarded chill.

“I see that even your great fame isn’t enough for you,” he said.

The Cossack shrugged.

“Small wars, small glory,” he said. “Knighthoods aren’t earned in longboats raiding down the Dnieper.”

... yet, as more wine and mead gets consumed, Bohun’s facial expressions grow stranger and stranger.

The roosters had already crowed before Skrzetuski threw himself down on the sleeping robes. Exhausted, he slept hard, without dreaming, and when he got up he felt drawn but rested and at ease. He dressed rapidly. The Valachian envoy’s wagons were already rumbling through the maydan and his own soldiers were mounted and waiting at the gate.

... but Bohun hates parting ways without saying a proper goobye.

“Won’t you say ‘Go with God’ to me?”

“Go with God,” Jan said.

His heart leaped up, then tightened. Jan said what he wanted but not how he wanted; it might have been a whisper coming from a grave.

“Hey, listen, one time in the Black Sea, I remember, I took a Turkish galley full of the most beautiful young girls a man would want to see.” 

“Picked for the Sultan’s harem from all over the world they were, and not one of them sparked anything in my heart. Not one! I made war on the Tartars, took my loot where it came, and lived in the Steppe like a prince in his castle . . . I was free! I did what I wanted! And what’s the story today? Eh? Will you tell me that? Here I sit like a slave!”

.. right?”

“Coming home with me?”

The young soldier was left alone with Pan Longinus too stirred and excited to think.

“It’ll be a different man who’ll go with you to Lubnie tomor­row,” he said finally.

Pan Longinus stared. “Why? Are you staying here?”

“No, but the best part of me will stay What travels with you will be just a shell without a heart or soul.”

Queerujmy Sienkiewicza!

Oczom swym nie wierzę! Otwieram najnowszy numer czasopisma "Książki. Magazyn do Czytania" (2/2024) i co znajduję? Obszerny artykuł prof. Ryszarda Koziołka o postaciach nieheteronormatywnych i wątkach homoromantycznych w twórczości Henryka Sienkiewicza!

Po raz pierwszy chyba ktoś na łamach zacnego polskiego czasopisma tak otwarcie wezwał do queerowania naszego Heńka!

I wreszcie ktoś expressis verbis skonstatował, że Selim Mirza, Bohun i Ketling to postacie, którym Sienkiewicz dał androgyniczną postać, roztaczając wokół nich delikatną aurę homoerotyzmu.

I tym kimś nie było Theophan-o. Szok:-)))

Rząd 1: Piotr Stachiewicz (1858-1938), rysunki na papierze, ok. 1898 r. (czy tylko mi się wydaje, że do portretu Bohuna i Kmicica pozował mu ten sam chłopak? Spójrzcie na ten grymas ust i zarys podbródka...)

[If anyone is wondering what Bohun has to do with bats: This is an illustration for a scene from theophan-o's fanfiction "Upiór za okiennicą" where a bat in Helena's room causes quite a bit of confusion.

I wish I could draw Bohun actually holding the little "ghost", but as that's far beyond my drawing abilities, it's just the bat, waiting for Bohun to find it...]

Skoro Panowie Bracia wciąż chcą Jędrusia, oto Jędruś!

Z okazji pięciu miesięcy istnienia Trylogiowego serwera, natchnione dyskusjami toczonymi w gronie Panów Braci, Theophan-o postanowiło zainicjować nową serię postów (oznaczanych tagiem #trylogialibrary), poświęconych publikacjom na temat „Trylogii” Henryka Sienkiewicza i jej filmowych adaptacji.

Na początek absolutnie ukochana książka moich nastoletnich lat: 

Władysław Zawistowski, Kto jest kim w Trylogii Henryka Sienkiewicza?, Gdańsk 1999, ss. 432.

Nie zamieszczę tu zdjęć mojego egzemplarza, bo aż wstyd pokazać, jak bardzo publikacja ta została „zaczytana” przez młode Theophan-o! Praca monumentalnych rozmiarów, pięknie wydana. Ma formę słownika encyklopedycznego, prezentującego wszystkie postacie „Ogniem i mieczem”, „Potopu” i „Pana Wołodyjowskiego” w układzie alfabetycznym. Znajdziemy tu zatem omówienie zarówno najbardziej znanych i kochanych bohaterów pokroju Kmicica, jak i statystów z najdalszych planów fabuły, jak kucharczyk z dworu w Rozłogach. Nieomal każde z haseł składa się z dwóch części: w pierwszej Autor streszcza powieściowe losy danego bohatera, a w drugiej – prezentuje jego historyczny pierwowzór, zdradzając bardzo dobre przygotowanie: któżby przypuszczał, że autentyczną postacią była waleczna Kozaczka, Horpyna Dońcówna? Widać, oczywiście, że książka ta powstała przed erą komputerów i OCR. Autor sporządzał rejestr bohaterów Sienkiewiczowskich i kreślił ich sylwetki bez nowoczesnych narzędzi, więc zdarzają mu się pominięcia, np. zauważył, że ulubieniec Theophan-o, Jurek Bohun jest wspominany w „Panu Wołodyjowskim” (pan Zagłoba dostrzega podobieństwo między nim a Azją), ale już o wzmiankach o nim w „Potopie” nic nie napisał. Mimo wszystko jednak: doskonałe to kompendium.

Na koniec ważna informacja dla osób rysujących: książkę zdobi bardzo bogaty materiał ikonograficzny, tj. fotosy ze wszystkich polskich ekranizacji Trylogii (z „Przygodami pana Michała” włącznie), dodajmy, nieopatrzone i niepublikowane w innych miejscach, a także ilustracje z różnych wydań powieści Sienkiewicza (z Kossakiem i Szancerem na czele) i przedstawienia z epoki. Doskonały zbiór materiału referencyjnego do rysowania strojów, uzbrojenia, itp.
