i am not reblogging this post from OP (posted 2 days ago, with 4,400 notes and counting) because i know that often people are just making their own vent posts on their blogs and maybe don’t expect them to circulate widely outside of their small tumblr circle! and i don’t mean to like, jump on someone who is just commenting on something and then going on with their life. but i feel like i keep seeing versions of this sentiment on leftist twitter too and i really think it is a gross misrepresentation of the bill that passed earlier this month - which is due in part to social media’s intense focus on the “stimulus check” part of the bill. but the bill was not called “the stimulus check” act! it was called “The American Rescue Plan” and it was specifically geared towards providing desperately-needed relief to the American middle & working classes. the $1400 direct payments to individuals was just one small portion of the bill. here are the far more important parts:
in addition to receiving a $1400 direct payment themselves, individuals with children receive an additional $1400 check for each dependent
college students who are still listed as dependents on their parents’ tax forms (typically so they can retain health insurance benefits under the ACA) can more easily claim stimulus money - which is huge for college kids who may be helping to financially support immediate or extended family members
unemployment benefits have been extended from March 31, 2021 (their original expiration date) to September 6, 2021
unemployment benefits will be supplemented with a $300 weekly payment (ie $300 on top of what people are receiving from their state government)
unemployment benefits received in 2020-21 are tax-exempt (a retroactive change that means people who are unemployed won’t receive a surprise tax bill counting their unemployment money as “income”)
a substantial tax credit for employers who offer paid sick leave and paid family leave benefits (ie creating a direct incentive for employers to authorize emergency paid leave)
15% increase in food stamp benefits and extension of eligibility
child and family tax credit benefits!!!! this is the part that people are describing as one of the most significant anti-poverty initiatives in American history. families are eligible for a tax credit of $3600 for each child under the age of 6 and $3000 for each child between 6-18. people can also claim a child and dependent care credit with a maximum benefit of $4000 for one eligible dependent and up to $8000 for two or more. it also expands the earned income tax credit and lowers the age limit to 19. dems also pushed to get at least 50% of the tax credit money to people this year instead of making them wait for their 2021 tax return. this calculator allows you to calculate how much families will receive. if you make $50,000 a year and have four children, you will receive $13,200 through the child tax credit alone, paid out in monthly payments of $1,100 from July to December 2021 + an additional $6,600 lump-sum payment when you file your 2021 tax return early next year. there are also some additional dependent-related tax credits things that I don’t fully understand but that seem to indicate people are eligible for even more money.
forgiven student loan debt is made tax-free (a necessary prerequisite for future efforts to cancel/forgive student loan debt)
huge expansion of grant benefits to small businesses, including $28.6 billion specifically for bars and restaurants; $15 billion for low-interest, long-term replayment emergency disaster loans; and $7 billion more for the paycheck protection program (which can only be used on payroll expenses and makes it possible for small businesses to keep workers on payroll even if they are operating at lower capacity). you can describe this as “for the economy only” if you want, but I sure feel like it will alleviate a whole lot of human suffering by allowing people to keep their jobs & paychecks even if their workplaces remain partially shut down. my dad is a small business owner and has been able to keep his entire staff on payroll through the entire pandemic. the bill also includes billions for airlines and concert venues, which will again! means people won’t lose their jobs!! plus it allocates $175 million to fund a Community Navigator Program that reaches out to eligible businesses and helps guide them through the application process—ie making it possible for small businesses to actually take receive these benefits.
$350 billion to state, local, and tribal governments
$130 billion for K-12 schools to improve ventilation, reduce class sizes, purchase PPE for employees and students, and hire support staff; of this money, 20% must be dedicated to programs designed to counteract “learning loss” from students who missed school during the pandemic
$40 billion for colleges and universities, at least $20 billion of which must go to emergency grants to students (our university has been giving regular emergency grants throughout the pandemic to students to help cover rent, unexpected medical expenses, costs related to family emergencies or lost family income, tuition bills that they suddenly can’t pay, fees associated with wifi or purchasing tech equipment so they can learn virtually)
a HUGE amount of money four housing benefits!!!! i keep seeing people yelling about how $1400 won’t cover their rent but THAT’S WHAT THE RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS ARE FOR. $21.6 billion in rent and utility assistance, paid directly to states and local governments so they can disburse it to eligible households!!! plus $5 billion to Section 8 housing (which “must go to those who are or were recently homeless, as well as individuals who are escaping from domestic violence, sexual assualt, or human trafficking”).
$5 billion to support state and local programs for homeless and at-risk individuals (can be used for rental assistance, homelessness prevention services, and counseling; can also be used to purchase properties that will be turned into permanent shelters or affordable housing for people who are homeless). plus an additional $120 for housing counseling.
$4.5 billion earmarked for a special assistance program that helps low-income households cover costs of heating and cooling and $500 million to cover water costs
$750 million in housing assistance for tribes and native Hawaiians (who are also eligible for other benefits through the rental assistance and direct tribal government grants described above)
and then BILLIONS of dollars to support FEMA, the Veterans Affairs’ healthcare system, the CDC, and state, local, and territorial public health departments for all things related to: COVID testing, contact tracing, vaccine production and distribution, vaccine outreach, PPE, and public health education. this includes (among many, MANY other things), $5.4 billion to the Indian Health Services (division of the Department of Health and Human Services that specifically provides health services to Native people and tribal territories), $200 million for nursing loan repayment programs, $80 million for mental health training, $3.5 billion in block grants specifically geared towards community mental health programs and substance abuse/prevention/treatment programs
$86 billion for a rescue package for pension funds (esp union-sponsored pension funds) that are on the verge of collapse - collectively covering 10.7 million workers.
billions of dollars for public transit programs (and sure, public transit is important to the economy, but access to regular, reliable, affordable, and safe public transit is HUGELY important to human health and well-being! it is how many people esp in urban areas access grocery stores, health care, their jobs, childcare facilities, etc.
$10.4 billion for agriculture, of which $5 billion is specifically earmarked for socially disadvantaged farmworkers. to quote wikipedia: “Experts identified the relief bill as the single most important piece of legislation for African-American framers since the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”
tons of money to fund 100% of premiums for COBRA (health insurance for people who have unexpectedly lost or had to leave their jobs) through October 2021. COBRA is hella expensive and experts estimate that 2.2 million people will need to enroll for COBRA benefits in 2021. there are also various provisions that expand Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (a program targeted at uninsured children in families who don’t qualify for Medicaid but may not be able to afford adequate healthcare coverage. it also fixes some things with the ACA that could’ve led to people getting surprise bills due to fluctuating income or unexpected changes in employment status.
i am SO OVER the so-called ‘progressive’ rhetoric that no good can ever come from the government, or that all politicians (dems or republicans) are basically the same level of evil and incompetent, or that ~mutual aid~ (ie small payments made between individuals in a community) is the only thing we can count on or should count on in times of crisis. no!!!! fuck no!!!! like mutual aid is great but America is an INSANELY WEALTHY country and it is such bullshit to act like we can’t or shouldn’t expect our government to take care of the people who live here. and i am also just GRAHARRGHGHH at people who are completely disengaged from politics offering their jaded and hyper-cynical hot takes on things they don’t! actually! know! anything! about!!!!!!! and in the process making other people increasingly jaded and cynical about the possibility of electing a government that actually prioritizes the needs & well-being of its citizenry!!!
ugh i’m just TIRED of leftist political cynicism y’all especially when it comes from people who have absolutely no understanding of how much WORK it takes to make huge things like the American Rescue Act happen (work that includes not just the immediate negotiation of the bill but also the years of organizing & voter recruitment work it took to get a narrow democratic majority in the senate so that we could pass things like this!!!!). I’M DONE WITH BEING CYNICAL!!!! i feel, in a totally earnest and unjaded way, that it’s absolutely incredible that dems were able to write, negotiate, and pass this bill, and i feel so so so relieved to be currently living under an administration that is flawed in many ways but is at least actually and earnestly TRYING to reckon with unprecedented “suffering in an actual human scale” (to quote OP) and is even using this crisis as an opportunity to advance major anti-poverty initiatives that will have a LASTING IMPACT on actual human lives. as opposed to our previous administration, which was made up of thousands of people who woke up every single day and asked themselves “what can I do today to further dehumanize & inflict needless suffering upon millions of people?”
PHEW!!!! SORRY!!!! JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS I GUESS!!!!!!!!
#i went into this thinking i was going to be very measured and calm#but actually i'm pretty pissed off#people fire off their hot takes and thousands of people read them and it's so! fucking! infuriating!!!#no government is ever gonna be perfect! certainly ours still has a shit-ton of problems!!!!!#but i hate the 'only option is to fully disengage & say fuck it' attitude#esp when then thousands of people read it and accept it as truth#long post

Cost of Studying in the Netherlands The cost of study at Dutch universities and other higher education institutions depends on a student’s nationality. University fees for Dutch and EU students For students from the Netherlands, other EU/EEA countries, Switzerland or Surinam, the cost of study at Dutch universities and higher education institutions are mostly covered by the government. However, these students are required to contribute a statutory tuition fee an annual amount of around 2.000 euros, set by the government. University fees for non-EU students in the Netherlands For non-EU students study costs are usually higher when coming to the Netherlands. This amount depends on the institution, the degree, the student’s residence permit type, whether they have studied before, and if they have obtained a scholarship. To know the exact amount, it’s advised to research costs directly with the institution of your choice. Private school costs in the Netherlands Private schools such as business schools, run bachelor and MBA programs with tuition fees ranging from roughly 16.000 to 36.000 euros for a complete program. Student Financing in the Netherlands The Dutch government also has a student financing system to assist students with paying for their study and living costs, including public transport. What it comprises exactly depends on what you study. Student financing is available to Dutch students, however, non-Dutch students are sometimes also eligible if they have EU citizenship or a type II, III, or IV residence permit. Additional costs while studying Extra costs that need to be taken into consideration include: Visa and residence permit fees. Travel costs to arrive in the Netherlands. Accommodation in the Netherlands (e.g. short stay, room, apartment, student housing, etc.). Dutch health insurance depending on where you are from and how long you are staying. Study materials such as textbooks or equipment. Travel costs to places such as shopping, using public transport, and leisure activities. Students are often eligible for discounts at many bars, restaurants, museums, and cinemas. Study costs are tax-deductible If case you are working while studying in the Netherlands, you can deduct study costs on your annual income tax return. Deductible study costs include: Programs and degrees such as an MBA, Master’s, Bachelor’s, MBO, or certain personal development courses Textbooks A computer Study materials such as specialized software or equipment Note- Language courses, travel costs, and accommodation are not deductible.
The Netherland’s Student Visa Process The Holland student visa process for a Non –EU student is as below. Provincial Residence Permit- MVV, officially known as Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf (MVV). This is also known as the permit to enter the Netherlands. The MVV is applied for on the student’s behalf by the university. MVV allows entry into the country for six months. Most of the courses at universities last for 1 to 4 years, a mere MVV will not suffice. Hence the other option is to apply for VVR. VVR or a Residence Permit -once you enter the country, you need to apply for VVR or a Residence Permit. The VVR is also applied for by the host university. VVR is valid for the duration of the program and is permitted only for study purposes the student had enrolled in. There is another condition attached with the validity of VVR. It stays valid provided the student scores 50% of credit throughout the course duration. As the Netherlands is a part of the European Union, international students from the EU or EEA get special privileges and have different requirements. They require neither the MVV nor VVR for studying in the Netherlands. Such students have to simply request their host institutions to register them with the immigration authority. For students from the USA, Canada, Vatican City State, Monaco, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, only a VVR is required. Requirements for Student Visa for the Netherlands For the successful grant of a student visa for the Netherlands, you must submit these compulsory documents:
Valid passport
Sufficient financial Proof -means validating that you will be able to support yourself financially during your stay. These include either or all transfer of funds, bank statement, and scholarship letter.
Letter from the university you have chosen confirming your admission or enrollment
Proof of payment for all required legal fees
Health insurance
NUFFIC-certificate, a requirement only for Chinese students
Other document requirements are:
Completed application form
Two photographs meeting the officially specified conditions
Birth certificate
Academic transcripts
Insurance Requirements Netherlands student visa requirements-students are required to have valid health insurance to bear their medical expenses in the Netherlands if required. For non-EU, non-EEA, and students from Switzerland, their EU Health Insurance Card should be sufficient. For those working in the Netherlands, it is compulsory to take the Dutch basic healthcare insurance. Keep this in mind if you intend to work part-time during your course. Students should find out from their host institution for details on health insurance requirements and references for an insurance company. Many private companies also offer special insurance packages for students. Some other insurance options are not required but are strongly advised. Personal liability insurance is for insuring you against costs incurred by you in case of damage to someone or their property. Repatriation insurance should also be considered. It covers you against the transferring cost incurred if a serious medical condition requires returning you to your home country. Household contents insurance covers you against any unfortunate damage to your house due to fire, water damage, and theft, among others things.

Taxi.
Vanpool Services
Ferries and Water Taxis
Water Transport- The Netherlands has thirteen seaports, three of which have international significance. Education Facilities in Netherland The education system in the Netherlands works very well, but it is very different from most other countries. Schools following particular religious or pedagogic principles have had equal state funding to public schools since 1917.
Education in the Netherlands Most children start primary school (called basisschool in Dutch) the day after their 4th birthday; whenever that is throughout the year. From their 5th birthday, all children are obliged to go to school Pre-school education in the Netherlands Before a child reaches primary school age, he/she could go to daycare or preschool, or a combination of the two. Daycare is meant for children from about 10 weeks up to 4 years old. Most daycares only offer full-day contracts for 1 to 5 fixed days per week. In most cities, preschool starts at age 2 and is offered for an average of 15 hours per week, spread out over three days. Primary education in the Netherlands In the Netherlands, there is a distinction between an open bar and bijzondere schools. The openbare schools are both funded and run by an independent foundation that was originally set up by the government. They are always non-religious. About two-thirds of the population attend bijzondere (special) schools, which have their board and often follow particular religious or pedagogic principles. Secondary education in the Netherlands It has three levels of high school education, which go by the acronyms of VMBO, HAVO, and VWO. Here is a summary of them all: VMBO – It is preparatory secondary vocational education, usually takes four years, and is followed by MBO, HAVO – It is the senior general secondary education, takes five years, and is followed by HBO (Hogeschool/University of Applied Sciences); VWO – It is pre-university education that takes six years, and students can continue to university (WO). Higher education in the Netherlands Since most employers ask for qualified employees, students are highly encouraged to obtain a diploma. After the above-mentioned types of secondary school, students can continue with many different types of higher education. Bachelor and masters programs Some HBO institutes also offer a master’s program, for which you often need to have some relevant work experience. You can also do your bachelor’s at HBO, followed by a master’s at university. With the certificate of your first year of HBO (propedeuse), you may also continue your education at university. Education costs and funding Municipalities sponsor parents who cannot afford the voluntary parent contribution at the government-funded schools. They can also get a contribution towards after-school activities and other costs related to raising children. Some companies pay for the international education of the children of their employees, and sometimes these fees are tax-deductible. It is a good idea to ask your HR department if this is the case.

Aww hey.. I noticed the past days you’ve been asking for an ask or some interaction. So… hey! What’s up! I hope you get out of your abusive household situation. Have you been feeling OK lately? Do you need someone to talk to? I saw that you’re making CC, how is the progress in that? ( I learnt abt your blog regarding the concern over your CC post ). I hope you’ll feel well soon… just know there’s someone listening to you. :) be well!
Hi!!!!
First, thank you so much for the concern. About my situation... I have some good news. My twin sister and I have been discussing getting an apartment together. I've applied for disability benefits and with them + the amount my sister gets from her job we should be able to afford it.
One of my concerns was that she goes to university about an hour from where I am now. Most of my medical stuff and specialists are in the Toronto area so I was worried about that. The wait times for these stuff are ridiculously long so I didn't want to have to wait again for those services. But she reassured me that whenever I have in person appointments I can just travel to my parents house, where I live now. I don't think I'm well enough to travel especially since the bus ride would be over 2 hours but ig we'll figure it out. Plus she plans to get her driver's license so yeah.
So I will have to make a down payment soon then live off of whatever I have left till September. Before, I had a social worker looking for rooms for me to rent and my plan was that I would have to pay two months' rent with my savings and then apply for financial assistance immediately after I move because I'm not eligible while I live with my parents. That financial assistance is temporary and I would have to live off of it until I can get disability benefits. The thing is that assistance only leaves you with under 200 dollars after paying the lowest rent you can get for a room in my area... So I would have to live off of my savings while I'm getting that (if I had any left).
There were many issues I would have to deal with like trying to find a landlord that would rent to me since I have no income, needing help with packing because I'm physically unable to, and dealing with other renting stuff which would be very stressful with my current mental state. My sister was not really willing to help me because she would say she is busy and she also didn't want me to move out.
So if we get an apartment together she will deal with all that stuff and she will pack for me and we both don't have to deal with living with other ppl. There is a few risks but yeah. As for my cc-making process, I will make a post about it soon. And I do talk to some people on twitter but I don't have much friends on tumblr lol so I'm free to talk with anyone that wants to.
#its 4am idk why i decided to type this out when I should try and fall back asleep#i got too excited#i'm not as lonely as I was before thanks to twitter#but i still love getting asks idky lol#even if its a wcif#anyways thanks again for the concern#ask#rant

Who might need help with their LIS?
There are 4 groups of people who already have the LIS but may need some help to keep it or to understand that their LIS is changing. We send them targeted notices on colored paper when there are changes to their LIS.
1. People who won't automatically be eligible for the LIS Each September, we mail a notice (CMS Publication No. 11198) (PDF) on gray paper to people who'll no longer automatically get the LIS. This notice is a LIS application, and it includes a postage-paid pre-addressed envelope. These people may still qualify for the LIS, but they will need to send in a new application. The gray notice:
Tells the person why they no longer automatically qualify for the LIS
Encourages them to fill out and send in a LIS application
2. People who'll have a change to their LIS co-payment In early October, we mail a notice (CMS Publication No. 11199) (PDF) on orange paper to people who'll qualify for extra help but will have a chance to their co-payment.
3. People who'll be reassigned to a new plan In early November, we mail notice on blue paper (CMS Publication No. 11208) (PDF) to people who qualify for the LIS but will be reassigned to a new prescription drug plan starting on January 1st.
We automatically reassign people who:
Qualify for the full (100%) premium subsidy.
Are in a prescription drug plan that's raising the premium above the low-income premium amount.
Were enrolled in their current plan by CMS.
We'll also automatically reassign people who qualify for the LIS if their prescription drug plan leaves the Medicare Program.
4. People who chose their plan In early November, we mail a notice (CMS Publication No. 11267) (PDF). Whose premium cost will increase, but we're not automatically reassigning to a new plan, because they chose and joined their plan.
Who qualifies for the full (100%) premium subsidy, but are in a plan that's increasing their premium amount so it's more than the standard low-income premium subsidy amount. This notice tells people about the increase in their drug plan premium costs and explains their options to stay in their plan or join another plan (including plans they won't pay a monthly premium for). cms.gov

Biden’s Lesson From Past Green Stimulus Failures: Go Even Bigger Wind power more than tripled in the last decade, and now generates nearly 8 percent of the nation’s electricity. Solar power, which generated less than 1 percent of the nation’s electricity in 2010, now generates about 2 percent, and is growing fast. Economists generally agree that the Obama stimulus, which pumped about $40 billion in loans and tax incentives to those industries, deserves partial credit. But experts also point to a fundamental problem with throwing money at climate change: It is not a particularly effective way to lower emissions of planet-warming pollution. While the Obama green spending created new construction jobs in weatherization and helped turn a handful of boutique wind and solar companies into a thriving industry, U.S. emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases have stayed about the same, five million tons a year since 2010, and are projected to continue at the same level for the coming decades, absent new policies to force reductions, such as taxes or regulations. Mr. Obama had hoped to pair the recovery act money with a new law that would cap planet-warming emissions, but that effort died in Congress. His administration then enacted regulations on emissions, but they were blocked by the courts and rolled back by the Trump administration. The recovery act “was a success at creating jobs, but it did not meet emissions-cutting goals,” said David Popp, a professor, of public administration at Syracuse University and the lead author of the National Bureau of Economics study on the green stimulus money. “And this new stimulus, on its own, will not be enough to reduce emissions. “Unless they can pair it with a policy that forces people to reduce emissions, a big spending bill doesn’t have a big impact,” Mr. Popp said. Frequently Asked Questions About the New Stimulus Package How big are the stimulus payments in the bill, and who is eligible? The stimulus payments would be $1,400 for most recipients. Those who are eligible would also receive an identical payment for each of their children. To qualify for the full $1,400, a single person would need an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or below. For heads of household, adjusted gross income would need to be $112,500 or below, and for married couples filing jointly that number would need to be $150,000 or below. To be eligible for a payment, a person must have a Social Security number. Read more. What would the relief bill do about health insurance? Buying insurance through the government program known as COBRA would temporarily become a lot cheaper. COBRA, for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, generally lets someone who loses a job buy coverage via the former employer. But it’s expensive: Under normal circumstances, a person may have to pay at least 102 percent of the cost of the premium. Under the relief bill, the government would pay the entire COBRA premium from April 1 through Sept. 30. A person who qualified for new, employer-based health insurance someplace else before Sept. 30 would lose eligibility for the no-cost coverage. And someone who left a job voluntarily would not be eligible, either. Read more What would the bill change about the child and dependent care tax credit? This credit, which helps working families offset the cost of care for children under 13 and other dependents, would be significantly expanded for a single year. More people would be eligible, and many recipients would get a bigger break. The bill would also make the credit fully refundable, which means you could collect the money as a refund even if your tax bill was zero. “That will be helpful to people at the lower end” of the income scale, said Mark Luscombe, principal federal tax analyst at Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting. Read more. What student loan changes are included in the bill? There would be a big one for people who already have debt. You wouldn’t have to pay income taxes on forgiven debt if you qualify for loan forgiveness or cancellation — for example, if you’ve been in an income-driven repayment plan for the requisite number of years, if your school defrauded you or if Congress or the president wipes away $10,000 of debt for large numbers of people. This would be the case for debt forgiven between Jan. 1, 2021, and the end of 2025. Read more. What would the bill do to help people with housing? The bill would provide billions of dollars in rental and utility assistance to people who are struggling and in danger of being evicted from their homes. About $27 billion would go toward emergency rental assistance. The vast majority of it would replenish the so-called Coronavirus Relief Fund, created by the CARES Act and distributed through state, local and tribal governments, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. That’s on top of the $25 billion in assistance provided by the relief package passed in December. To receive financial assistance — which could be used for rent, utilities and other housing expenses — households would have to meet several conditions. Household income could not exceed 80 percent of the area median income, at least one household member must be at risk of homelessness or housing instability, and individuals would have to qualify for unemployment benefits or have experienced financial hardship (directly or indirectly) because of the pandemic. Assistance could be provided for up to 18 months, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Lower-income families that have been unemployed for three months or more would be given priority for assistance. Read more. But, he added, “spending money is politically easier than passing policies to cut emissions.” If that “sets up the energy economy in a way that it’s eventually cheaper to reduce emissions, it could create more political support for doing that down the road” by making legislation or regulations less painful, he said. Fear of Inflation Finds a Foothold in the Bond Market The so-called bond vigilantes may be back, 30 years after they led a sell-off in Treasury securities over the prospect of higher government spending by a new Democratic administration. The Federal Reserve has downplayed the risk of inflation, and many experts discount the danger of a sustained rise in prices. But there is an intense debate underway on Wall Street about the prospects for higher inflation and rising interest rates. Yields on 10-year Treasury notes have risen sharply in recent weeks, a sign that traders are taking the inflation threat more seriously. If the trend continues, it will put bond investors on a collision course with the Biden administration, which recently won passage of a $1.9 trillion stimulus bill and wants to spend trillions more on infrastructure, education and other programs. The potential confrontation made some market veterans recall the 1990s, when yields on Treasury securities lurched higher as the Clinton administration considered plans to increase spending. As a result, officials soon turned to deficit reduction as a priority. Ed Yardeni, an independent economist, coined the term bond vigilante in the 1980s to describe investors who sell bonds amid signs that fiscal deficits are getting out of hand, especially if central bankers and others don’t act as a counterweight. As bond prices fall and yields rise, borrowing becomes more expensive, which can force lawmakers to spend less. “They seem to mount up and form a posse every time inflation is making a comeback,” Mr. Yardeni said. “Clearly, they’re back in the U.S. So while it’s fine for the Fed to argue inflation will be transitory, the bond vigilantes won’t believe it till they see it.” Yields on the 10-year Treasury note hit 1.75 percent last week before falling back this week, a sharp rise from less than 1 percent at the start of the year. Not all the sellers necessarily oppose more government spending — some are simply acting on a belief that yields will move higher as economic activity picks up, or jumping on a popular trade. But the effect is the same, pushing yields higher as prices for bonds fall. Yields remain incredibly low by historical standards and even recent trading. Two years ago, the 10-year Treasury paid 2.5 percent — many bond investors would happily welcome a return to those yields given that a government note bought today pays a relative pittance in interest. And during the Clinton administration, yields on 10-year Treasurys rose to 8 percent, from 5.2 percent between October 1993 and November 1994. Still, Mr. Yardeni believes the bond market is saying something policymakers today ought to pay attention to. “The ultimate goal of the bond vigilante is to be heard, and they are blowing the whistle,” he said. “It could come back to bite Biden’s plans.” Yet evidence of inflation remains elusive. Consumer prices, excluding the volatile food and energy sectors, have been tame, as have wages. And even before the pandemic, unemployment plumbed lows not seen in decades without stoking inflation. Indeed, the bond vigilantes remain outliers. Even many economists at financial firms who expect faster growth as a result of the stimulus package are not ready to predict inflation’s return. “The inflation dynamic is not the same as it was in the past,” said Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist at Northern Trust in Chicago. “Globalization, technology and e-commerce all make it harder for firms to increase prices.” What’s more, with more than nine million jobs lost in the past year and an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent, it would seem there is plenty of slack in the economy. That’s how Alan S. Blinder, a Princeton economist who was an economic adviser to President Bill Clinton and is a former top Fed official, sees it. Even if inflation goes up slightly, Mr. Blinder believes the Fed’s target for inflation, set at 2 percent, is appropriate. “Bond traders are an excitable lot, and they go to extremes,” he said. “If they are true to form, they will overreact.” Indeed, there have been rumors of the bond vigilantes’ return before, like in 2009 as the economy began to creep out of the deep hole of the last recession and rates inched higher. But in the ensuing decade, both yields and inflation remained muted. If anything, deflation was a greater concern than rising prices. It is not just bond traders who are concerned. Some of Mr. Blinder’s colleagues from the Clinton administration are warning that the conventional economic wisdom hasn’t fully accepted the possibility of higher rates or an uptick in prices. Lower-income families that have been unemployed for three months or more would be given priority for assistance. Read more. Robert E. Rubin, Mr. Clinton’s second Treasury secretary, echoed that concern but took pains to support the stimulus package. “There is a deep uncertainty,” Mr. Rubin said in an interview. “We needed this relief bill, and it served a lot of useful purposes. But we now have an enormous amount of stimulus, and the risks of inflation have increased materially.” Mr. Rubin acknowledged that predicting inflation was very difficult, but he said policymakers ought to be ready to fight it. “If inflationary pressures do take off, it’s important to get ahead of them quickly before they take on a life of their own.” The Federal Reserve has plenty of options. Not only is it buying up debt, which keeps yields down, but the Fed chair, Jerome H. Powell, has called for keeping monetary policy relatively loose for the foreseeable future. If higher prices do materialize, the Fed could halt asset purchases and raise rates sooner. “We’re committed to giving the economy the support that it needs to return as quickly as possible to a state of maximum employment and price stability,” Mr. Powell said at a news conference last week. That help will continue “for as long as it takes.” While most policymakers expect faster growth, falling unemployment and a rise in inflation to above 2 percent, they nonetheless expect short-term rates to stay near zero through 2023. But the Fed’s ability to control longer-term rates is more limited, said Steven Rattner, a veteran Wall Street banker and former New York Times reporter who served in the Obama administration. “At some point, if this economy takes off bigger than any one of us expect, the Fed will have to raise rates, but it’s not this year’s issue and probably not next year’s issue,” he said. “But we are in uncharted waters, and we are to some extent playing with fire.” The concerns about inflation expressed by Mr. Rattner, Mr. Rubin and others has at least a little to do with a generational angst, Mr. Rattner, 68, points out. They all vividly remember the soaring inflation of the 1970s and early 1980s that prompted the Fed to raise rates into the double digits under the leadership of Paul Volcker. The tightening brought inflation under control but caused a deep economic downturn. “People my age remember well the late 1970s and 1980s,” Mr. Rattner said. “I was there, I covered it for The Times, and lived through it. Younger people treat it like it was the Civil War.” Some younger economists, like Gregory Daco of Oxford Economics, who is 36, think these veterans of past inflation scares are indeed fighting old wars. Any rise in inflation above 2 percent is likely to be transitory, Mr. Daco said. Bond yields are up, but they are only returning to normal after the distortions caused by the pandemic. “If you have memories of high inflation and low growth in the 1970s, you may be more concerned with it popping up now,” he said. “But these are very different circumstances today.” Source link Orbem News #Bond #Fear #finds #Foothold #Inflation #market
