All About The Human Eye!
The eye is our most complex sensory organ. It consists of versatile structures such as the lens and iris that allow regulated amounts of light from varying distances to be focused on the retina – which converts the light into signals that are sent to the brain to be processed.
The main parts of the human eye represented on a cross-section illustrated transversally.
The cells of the retina, divided into 3 primary layers (from innermost to outermost):
Photoreceptor cell layer (rods and cones)
Bipolar cell layer (bipolar and horizontal cells)
Ganglion cell layer (ganglion and amacrine cells)
In the retina, there are 1.2 million ganglion cells, 6 million cones, and 120 rods spread across 10 layers of cells and 6 unique cell lines that work to convert light energy into electrical signals. These signals are gathered from all the cells and transmitted to the visual cortex inside the brain's occipital lobe via the optic nerve.
Light that enters our eyes from the left side of our visual field is processed in the right hemisphere of the brain while the light that enters our eyes from the right side of our visual field is processed in the brain's left hemisphere. This 'crisscrossing of visual fields', which takes place at the optic chiasma, results in a flipped image – which the brain automatically corrects.

It’s disappointing that I like my job and find it interesting but so many of us walk on eggshells out of fear of making mistakes. Because often times those mistakes get us lectures or straight up insulted by a superior or coworker. It’s a lot to know for any person in a short amount of time when hired. Let alone retaining all of that??? Two coworkers got lectured by another coworker last week for not typing in the doctor’s login for them before they enter the room. Thing is it’s not her fault either because most of the doctors won’t type it in If they can help it. A scribe told my coworkers she’s not trying to be hard on them but some of the doctors talk shit about our mistakes to them and she doesn’t want them to get in trouble. Patients have mentioned to me-unprompted- that I did all the work. I understand the doctors diagnose and treat. But everything leading up to that moment is what we do and sometimes it’s still not enough. Sometimes it’s spelling. Sometimes it’s someone didn’t catch some obscure disorder and dilated instead of telling the doctor.
Do they understand we’re not trained like that and we make an average of $16/hour??? Most of us make 900-1000 per check. Don’t even get me started on the coworker that is the official trainer for new hires but apparently spends most of the time talking about unrelated things. But she doesn’t want those new hires coming to me or another specific coworker for help. But she kinda bragged to them that she trained me. Which she only kinda did.
And with the high turn over and lack of pay those “mistakes” will only get worse. I would love to hope it gets better but I don’t know. We’re short staffed. People are trying to be in charge when they aren’t. And it’s getting tense.

Okay so everyone is having a good time but the puff of air measures your eye pressure, which is very important for screening for glaucoma! Glaucoma is caused by elevated eye pressure, and it's sometimes called "the sneak thief of sight" because it affects peripheral vision first and is often difficult to notice until the damage is very extensive. Screening is critical for preventing vision loss!
(the air puff is also not the most accurate, though. the best is the blue rings)
i don’t think that puff of air in your eyes is necessary i think the optometrist just likes messing with people

Hydrophobic Acrylic Diffractive Multifocal IOLs
Advances in intraocular lens technology have revolutionised vision correction and cataract surgery. Hydrophobic acrylic diffractive multifocal IOL is one such innovation in this field. For patients undergoing cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange, it combines materials science with smart design to optimise visual quality. Hydrophobic acrylic is a polymer that maintains its clarity and reduces complications like posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This material is considered the best for modern IOLs due to its excellent stability and biocompatibility. Moreover, because the material is hydrophobic, surface deposits are much less likely to occur, ensuring the clearness of the lens over time. The best Hydrophobic Acrylic Diffractive Multifocal IOLs in India are manufactured by Devine Meditech, whose products are invaluable resources for the ophthalmology industry.

WHAT IS CATARACT?
A cataract is the fogging that occurs in the normally clear eye lens, a membrane that sits on top of your eye. Having a cataract is a bit like looking through a foggy window or taking a picture with a messy camera. This limits your ability to see details, especially at night, and can make it more difficult to read, use a computer, or drive. Cataracts may also cause sensitivity to light and glare, dulled vision, and/or ghost images. In the beginning stages of cataracts, it take time to develop and their effects will not kick in early on, but they will eventually interfere with your eyesight.
beginning stages of cataracts eating a healthier diet, being in a stronger light, or using glasses can help you to counter diabetes and cataracts. But if they start getting in the way of daily activities, it is time to look into cataract surgery. Do not worry, cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure. If you do not have surgery, your vision will get worse over time.
Cataracts develop with ageing as the proteins in your eye lens break down and clump up, and the fog that you see is the clumps of proteins. Over time these clumps get bigger and more severe. You are more likely to develop cataracts sooner if you have the following risk factors:
Past eye inflammation or injury
Diabetes
Steroid use (topical or systemic
Excessive alcohol consumption
Family history of early cataracts
Smoking
Too much sunlight exposure
CATARACT SYMPTOMS
Following are the dense cataract symptoms
Foggy, blurred, and/or dimmed vision
Vision is tinted slightly yellow
Impaired night vision
Sensitivity to light and glare
Needing brighter light for reading and other activities
Seeing “halos” around lights
Frequently changing eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions
Double vision in one eye
TYPES OF CATARACTS
Cataracts you are born with or develop early on (congenital cataracts). Some babies are born with these cataracts or develop them in childhood. These cataracts are often genetic or from an infection or trauma inside the womb. These cataracts might also be due to certain conditions. Sometimes, congenital cataracts might not affect a person’s eyesight, but they should be removed soon after discovery if they do.
Cataracts that begin on the edges of the eye lens (cortical cataracts). Cortical cataracts begin as white, opaque, wedge-shaped streaks on the edge of the lens. As they slowly progress, the streaks make their way to the center of the lens and degrade vision.
Cataracts that begin in the center of the eye lens (nuclear cataracts). These cataracts may temporarily improve close-up vision, but with time, they yellow further and fog your eyesight. If the cataract continues, it might even begin browning. The cataract will keep yellowing or browning and can make it hard to distinguish colors.
Cataracts that affect the back of the eye lens (posterior subcapsular cataracts). Posterior subcapsular cataracts start as small, opaque areas that form near the back of the lens, in the path of light. They often interfere with your reading vision, limit your vision in bright light, and cause glare or halos around lights at night.
TESTS
To determine if you have a cataract, your doctor will review your medical history and symptoms, and perform an eye exam. The cataract operation cost and cataracts treatment cost depends upon the seriousness of your health situation. Your doctor may perform various tests, including:
Visual acuity test: A visual acuity test uses an eye chart to measure your visual acuity. Each eye is tested one at a time. Using a chart or a viewing device with progressively smaller letters, your eye doctor determines if your vision shows signs of impairment.
Visual acuity test: A visual acuity test uses an eye chart to measure your visual acuity. Each eye is tested one at a time. Using a chart or a viewing device with progressively smaller letters, your eye doctor determines if your vision shows signs of impairment. This allows your doctor to detect any small abnormalities.
Retinal exam: To prepare for a retinal exam, your eye doctor dilates your pupils using eye drops. This makes it easier to examine the back of your eyes (retina). Your eye doctor can examine your lens by using a slit lamp.
TREATMENT
Cataract surgery involves removing the natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. The artificial lens, called an intraocular lens or IOL, works the same way a natural lens works and remains a permanent part of your eye. Some eye problems prohibit the use of an IOL. In these situations, eyeglasses or contact lenses are used to correct vision. During cataract surgery, cataract doctor specialist or surgeons use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the eye, but the patient stays awake during the procedure, which normally lasts about an hour or less. Multifocal lenses, multifocal cataract lenses unlike monofocal intraocular lenses, allow for the correction of near and distance vision and make it possible to dispense with glasses. Patient identified with a cataract diagram following a sight test by cataract consultants.
LENS OPTIONS
Cataract surgery involves removing the natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens
MONOFOCAL INTRAOCULAR LENS
The Monofocal lens is the standard IOL and is designed to correct a patient’s distance vision. With this lens, you can see well from a distance, but your close-up vision remains impaired. This means that you will need glasses to read or do other similar activities.
MULTIFOCAL IOL
Multifocal lenses are lenses that provide the patient with distance, intermediate, and/or reading vision. This lens may not be the best option, as some patients are bothered by unusual distance or reading vision. Some other common side effects include impaired vision in bright light and halos around light at night.
TORIC IOL
These lenses help people with astigmatism see at distance or near rather than other IOLs would.
