The Lost Sister - Part 34
Synopsis: Xaden is known as an only child due to his sister who 'died' during the Rebellion. Little do they know she didn't die and has been so close this entire time.
Garrick Tavis x OC (Ophelia Riorson)
The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
I stand in the mirror, admiring mine and Imogen’s handiwork. It had taken us all afternoon to do it but we had done it. It was odd looking in the mirror and seeing the girl that stood before me. The last time I had seen myself like this was back in Aretia. The day I had gone off with my father. Back then I was young, defenceless and scared. Now… Now I was a dragon rider. Ready to take on anything thrown my way. And yet the thought of facing Garrick like this scared me. No. It terrified me.
”He is going to lose it when he see’s you without the red hair.” She says with a smirk, running her fingers through the hair we had left out.
We had spent the last hour working my hair into a half up half down style, with the upper half tied up in a messy bun and the lower half styled in loose waves. For the dress uniform I had picked the high neck sleeveless option and the floor-length skirt with a slit up the thigh. I high neck bodice hugged everything perfectly, and the skirt showed just enough leg as I walked. Something I knew Garrick would go crazy over. I hadn’t seen him or Xaden since battle brief this afternoon. I’d barely seen any of the other marked ones except Imogen who had already agreed to help me. It wasn’t a day most of us wanted to celebrate. Who wants to celebrate the death of their parents? I didn’t have a choice. If I didn’t show up, Melgren would not be pleased. If I wanted to keep him off our backs, I had to go.
”That’s if I can find him. He’s been MIA all afternoon.” I say as I flatten out my skirt.
”You’ll find him. He’ll be looking for you.” She tells me with a smile.
I smile back at her in the mirror. To think at the start of my time here she’d been at my throat due to Garrick’s feelings towards me. Going toe to toe on that mat with each other. And here we we’re nearly a year later. I wouldn’t say we were best friends, but we were very close. And we had Garrick to thank for that ironically. She leaves me when we make our way into the hallway, the rest of our squad already making their way to the celebrations. As I make my way over I hear rushed footsteps and a slamming door behind me. Turning I see Liam rushing towards me and the group.
”You did not try to leave with out me!” He shouts as he runs forward through the crowd, our squad turning to face both of us.
All their eyes go wide when they see me. Gone was the bright red hair I had kept all year. Now replaced with my natural black. The exact same colour as Xaden’s. Liam seems to be the only one not shocked at my appearance as he catches up to me.
”Looking good O. Suits you.” He says with his usual charming smile as he winks at me. Shameless flirt.
”I was hoping you’d been given the night off.” Violet responds as we join her. “Don’t you look handsome.”
”I know.” Liam responds smugly as he straightens his sash over a midnight black doublet. “I’ve heard healer cadets have a thing for riders.”
”Hardly.” Rhiannon says with a laugh. “As often as they have to put us back together? I bet they’re more into scribes.”
Liam looks over to Violet as we descend the stairs into a sea of black riders. “And what are scribes into?” He asks.
”Usually other scribes. But I guess riders, in my fathers case.”
Liam and I share a look as if to say in her case as well, but she had more than proven she was no longer the scribe she had been trained to be. She was a rider now.
I tune out the rest of the squad as we walk towards the courtyard. As I look around I note that there are not other marked ones but Liam and I. No surprises there. But I knew I would have to account for Xaden’s absence. No doubt receiving questions now my true identity had been revealed. By the time we reach the courtyard, the celebrations are in full swing. The sea of black now blending with the pale blue, cream and navy blue uniforms of the other quadrants. There’s easily a thousand people spread throughout the courtyard. The other quadrants overwhelming the now small sea of black. Goes to show how few sign up to be a dragon rider, and how high our fatality rate is. I had to commend whoever did the decorating for the event. This wasn’t my first time attending. But every time it always surprised me how they could transform the outdoor courtyard into somewhat of a ballroom. Everyone scatters off as we enter, but I keep close to Liam and Violet. This was the only time I had felt like I needed a bodyguard since Xaden had suggested it. None of the people around us care about Violet. All eyes are on Liam and I. Eyes trailing over mine and Liam’s exposed relic’s, before landing on the name on my sash. Eyes widening as they take me in.
”I’m so sorry.” Violet says as she hooks her arm through Liam’s. Clearly also noticing the eyes staring at Liam and I.
Liam smiles and pats her hand. “There is absolutely nothing for you to be sorry about.”
”Nothing we’re not use to.” I add as I take my place on her other side.
She shakes her head. I can feel how apologetic she feels. How sorry she feels for Liam and I. But I have no time to focus on it as I lock eyes with Melgren. His cold piercing eyes locking me in place. The rest of the room fading to nothing as we just look at each other. I can tell from here how displeased he is. My change in hair colour a massive fuck you to him. I watch as he makes his way towards us. Shit.
”Go.” Violets hisses at Liam as Melgren falls into place next to King Tauri and Violet’s mother.
Shit.
”You’re Majesty.” We all murmur, before dropping into a bow.
”You’re mother tells me you’ve bonded with no one but two exceptional dragons.” King Tauri says to Violet as they stop in front of us.
”Yes, she is quite confident in your power.” Melgren adds, as he shifts his gaze to Violet.
I can’t help but sigh at the relief of being free from his stare.
”I would not say the same at this time. I’m still learning how to wield.” Violet answers perfectly. Her years of being the General’s daughter paying off. But I can tell she’s not wanting to give away too much of what she can do. Wanting to keep eyes off her. Just like me.
”Don’t be so modest daughter,” Her mother chides. “From what the professors say, they’ve only seen a gift this powerful a few times in the last decade, in Brennan and the Riorson boy and girl.”
Despite all of us keeping neutral faces at her words, I instantly feel the distain and annoyance from Liam and Violet at how she addresses Xaden and I.
”Ah yes, I’ve heard some excellent things about you as well.” King Tauri says happily, his attention now shifting to me. “Melgren here is quite proud of how his training turned out and the signet you now bare. Probably the rarest we’ve seen if I’m not mistaken.”
”So I’ve heard. I’ve been working with Professor Carr closely to figure out what I can do.” I tell him, as happily as I can.
”Yes, from what I’ve been told he has quite a few theories about your signet. You’ll be a great asset to our forces, even if only some of those are true. I can’t wait to see what you two girls will be able to do once fully trained.” He says proudly before his attention shifts to Liam. “And you’re gift?”
”Farsight, Your Majesty.” Liam responds with his usual charming smile.
Melgren’s eyes shift to Liam’s exposed relic before moving to his sash. “Mairi, as in Colonel Mairi’s son?”
He hides it in his voice, but I can feel distrust and wariness he now feels towards Liam. If only he knew how good of a person Liam was. Damn these rebellion marks on our skin.
”Yes, General. Though I was mostly brought up by Duke Lindell at Tirvainne.” Liam responds without missing a beat as he meets Melgren’s eyes.
King Tauri nods, impressed with Liam’s answer. “Yes, Duke Lindell is a good man, a loyal man.”
”I have him to thank for my fortitude, Majesty.” Another perfect answer. Just like me, Liam knew how to play this game. And well. No doubt something he picked up from his time with Xaden.
”Yes you do.” Melgren nods as his eyes scan the crowd. “Now tell me, where is that brother of yours? I do like to lay eyes on him at least once a year and make sure he’s not causing trouble.”
Before I can respond Violet jumps in, obviously not pleased with how her mother addressed us earlier. “No trouble. He’s our wingleader, actually. He saved my life when we were on the front lines at Monsterrat.”
I note how General Sorrengail glares at her daughters statement about my brother. “Their dragons are mated.” Her glare shifting to a chilling smile. “So she’s grown quite close to him out of necessity.”
Whatever helps you sleep at night Lilith.
”That’s excellent!.” King Tauri beams. “It’s good to have a Sorrengail on lookout for us. You’ll let us know if he decides to, oh I don’t know. Start another war?”
I pick up on the subtle hint of his words. Melgren’s signet didn’t work when more than three marked ones were together. Meaning while at the Quadrant, it was quite hard to him to forsee what was coming. They we’re banking on Violet to let them know. And Melgren was banking on me. But after tonight, I’m sure he realises that is a lost hope. My black hair now a sign of who I align with.
”I can assure you, he’s loyal.” Violet responds sternly.
”So where is he?” King Tauri now scanning the courtyard as well. “I asked that they all be here, all marked ones.”
”Xaden isn’t one for parties much like myself. You’ll probably find him hiding in the shadows around the edge.” I say smuggly, Violet and Liam having to stiffle their laughter over my use of Xaden’s signet.
”Oh, look! There’s Dain Aetos!” General Sorrengail says, motioning to somewhere behind us. Obviously wanting to end this conversation as much as we did. “He’d be so humbled if you said hello.”
And with that they leave the three of us to stand in complete silence, watching them leave. All our shoulders sag as we let out a breath I don’t think any of us realised we were holding. Even though we’re no longer the focus of their attention, I can’t help but watch Melgren and the company he keeps. He had been waiting for one of us to slip up. They all had. They obviously had suspicions Xaden was up to something. But clearly didn’t have solid proof. And they we’re looking for it. We we’re going to have to be careful from here on out. I can the crowd, looking for any hint of the others. But I knew it was futile. I had hoped maybe Garrick might make an appearance tonight, but I knew he wouldn’t. He would be with Xaden. This day wasn’t easy for either of us. But I never had the luxury of being able to hide from it. Every year Melgren made me be apart of this. Every year I had to pretend. Part of me wishes I could be where ever he was now.
”Has she tried to escape yet?” Dain asks Liam as he steps back from Violet. I hadn’t even noticed him arrive.
”Not yet, but the evening is young.” Liam replies.
Dain looks between Liam and I, noting the tense lines on our faces and had no doubt noticed me looking around the room. ”The staircase is about five feet to our right. I’ll distract while you all slip away.”
I start walking, leaving Violet to say thank you for us. We all rush back to the riders quadrant, all eager to get away from the celebrations behind us. Within seconds of being back in the riders quadrant I pick up on where he is. My mind already searching for his. Violet must have been searching for Xaden as soon as we got back as she quickly turns to Liam.
”Liam, you know I adore you, right?”
”Well, that’s nice-”
”Go away.” She says before walking through the courtyard, me following right behind her.
”What? I can’t just leave you out here by yourself.”
”She won’t be, she’s got me.” I tell him sternly.
”And no offense, but I can fry this entire place with a lightning bolt if I want to, and I need to see Xaden, so go.” She says with a pat to his arm before walking off.
Liam just shakes his head at us before retreating towards the dorms, leaving me to follow Violet. Garrick and Xaden must be in the same place. As I reach out I can feel him, but he’s not as close as Garrick, or Bodhi who I have also picked up on. And as we approach the hole in the wall that open up to the Parapet, I can see two figures leaning against the opening.
”You go ahead, I’ll be over in a minute.” I tell her as we near the entry to the parapet, noting the figures of Bodhi and Garrick leaning against the opening.
She furrows her eyes at me but nods. “He’s going to love it.” She says with a soft smile before walking over to them.
I watch as Bodhi and Garrick probably warn her to leave him alone. I knew Xaden, and if he had walked out there alone, he needed his time alone. But I had faith she would be what he needed tonight. He could deny it all he wanted, but I knew he had fallen for her. And there was no denying her feelings as she kicks off her shoes and takes her first steps onto the parapet. She had come a long way since the start of the year.
Bodhi is the first to move, pushing off the opening to walk back. He only makes it a few steps before he see’s me and stops dead in his tracks, eyes going wide as Garrick slams into him.
”What the hell Bodhi? Why did you-”
A little look at what our girl looks like now.

The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
”When do you think she will wake up?” A low, familiar voice says, breaking through the fog in my head.
Garrick.
”Hard to say. I’ve never seen a signet like hers before. No one has.” A voice I can’t quite place. But still slightly familiar.
Me. They’re talking about me.
”Do you think the damage it’s caused is permanent?” A gruff female voice asks. Imogen. Definitely her.
Damage? They can’t be talking about the Wyvern I took down. There was nothing left of them. Perishing into a pile of dust as they hit the ground behind Garrick. And Garrick... He seems to be ok. That means they’re talking about me.
”Hard to say till she wakes up. The internal damage looked worse than it was due to the blood she was coughing up. But it will be interesting to see if she can see out of that eye now with the colour its turned.” The voice I still can’t quite place says.
Who was that? Definitely not Bodhi. Liam? No…. I know Liam’s voice. Who the hell was it?
Before I can try to pinpoint it the fog starts to seep back in, pulling me back to its depths.
This time when I break through the fog I’m able to open my eyes. It’s night, the room I’m in cast in an eerie glow from the mage light next to my bed. The familiar sound of wind hitting the cliffs.... Wind hitting the cliffs. A sound I hadn't heard in years. A sound that I would only hear in one place.
Home.
I sit upright, releasing my hand from another's grasp as I survey the room. My room. My room in Aretia. Home. I was back in Aretia. I hardly have time to absorb the surroundings before I am enveloped in a tight hug. The individual's arms press me against their trembling body, their sobs shaking us both. I don't need to turn my head to try and see who embraces me, recognising the familiar scent that fills my nostrils.
Garrick.
I immediately wrap my arms around him as my own tears roll down my cheeks. I was alive somehow. He was alive. We had survived. Something we both hadn’t thought would happen. And yet here we were. Sitting in Aretia of all places.
Garrick finally loosens his grip on me as he pulls back to look at me. Both of us looking over each other to make sure this is real and we’re both ok. It’s then I see the new scar adorning his face, stretching from his temple down to his jaw.
”This is new.” I ask, my voice hoarse and gravelly from not being used for a few days.
He nods slow. “Yeah, I got it after you-”
I watch his eyes gloss over with fresh tears that threaten to spill over as he takes a shaky breath. I’d never seen Garrick like this, and it’s easy to tell what had gone through his mind in that moment. He had thought I was dead. He’d watched as I’d doubled over, coughing up blood before collapsing. And judging by the shadows around his eyes, and his slightly sunken in cheeks, I’d been out for a few days at least.
”I’m here. I’m alive. I’m not going anywhere.” Reaching out to caress his cheek, my fingers tracing lightly over the new scar.
He chuckles darkly, “Forgive me if I don’t quite believe you. I’ve had to go through pretty much losing you twice in my life now.”
Ouch. But he wasn’t wrong. Twice in six years he had to go through thinking I was actually dead and thinking he’d just watched me die.
”Trust me, I’m doing my best to stay alive.” I try to assure him in a joking tone.
Garrick’s eyes harden ever so slightly and I know he hasn’t take my joke lightly. “Then you promise me you’ll never do whatever that was again. What was that?” His voice raising slightly.
”I honestly don’t know.” I start as I look down at my hands where the shadows had come out of. “I just panicked when I saw it direct those Wyvern at you. I just wanted to do anything I could to stop it, to save you and I just remember feeling this surge or power and…”
”And what?”
I take a deep breath before looking back up at him, noting the way his gaze flickers to my left eye.
”Death. It felt like what I’d imagine death to feel like.”
Garrick takes a sharp breath, his gaze locking back on my left eye. “Well that might explain why that happened.”
I furrow my eyebrows in confusion, Garrick turning to grab a mirror from the bedside table. He hands it to me, reflective side down. Clearly giving me the choice on if I wanted to see what had happened straight away or ease myself into it. I grasp the handle, turning the mirror towards my face. I’d honestly been expecting a scar or terrible bruising to adorn my face. But there wasn’t a single mark on me. Not a single scar or a bruise. Instead my left eye being a usual bright green, is void of any colour. As if the colour had been drained out of it, and I can’t help but be reminded of the way the colour had been drained from the ground after the Venin had channelled. Almost as if whatever I had done had taken some life out of me to do it. As if I’d drawn something out of me to do that.
”Well good news is I can still see fine.” I try to say positively as I look back over at Garrick, handing the mirror back out to him.
”Least that’s something.” He mutters as he places the mirror back on the bedside table before standing and walking over to the window that over looks Riorson house.
I stand on shakey legs, having to use my bed to steady myself as I stand. Definitely had been a few days I’d been out for then if I can barely stand.
Least you’re alive little one. Not everyone can say that.
I breathe a sigh of relief at hearing her in my head. Also feeling a little guilty I hadn’t reached out to see if she was ok. But if I was alive I knew she was to. But I sense a double meaning in her words.
What do you mean not everyone? I ask, almost snapping at her.
I remember Soleil and Fuil not making it. Something about her tone makes me think we lost more. If it was Xaden, Garrick would have told me.
“Liam and Deigh.” Garrick mumbles from the window, before turning slowly to me.
I shake my head, not wanting to believe his words. But there’s no denying the slight hurt in Garricks eyes. Liam was dead.
Fuck.
I blink back the tears that threaten to fall down my cheeks, a few managing to escape before I quickly rub them away with the back of my hand.
Liam was dead because of the Colonel. Soleil was dead because of the Colonel. All those people in that outpost dead because of him. Because they wouldn’t tell us the truth. Wouldn’t teach us what was really out there.
“Why do you look like you want to kill someone?” Garrick asks, a hint of concern in his voice as he watches me.
“Because I do.” I say sternly as I wobble over and join him at the window, look out over the place I call home. “If they just told us what was really going on out there. If they didn’t lie to us…”
“But they do. And they will continue to do so.”
I snap my head towards him. “And we’re just going to let them?”
“Yes, because if we go back there and start telling everyone what we’ve seen then they will kill us all.” He warns me. “We’ll be lucky if they even let us live when we go back.”
Shit. He was right. As angry as I was. As much as I wanted to fight back and show them as the liars they really are. We couldn’t. They’d kill us all without any hesitation.
“They’ll let us live.” I tell him confidently. “They have no choice but to let us live. If they do, they’d have to explain what we saw. What we fought. They can’t kill us because it will arouse too many questions.”
“I hope you’re right sweetheart, because I can’t have them killing us after this.” He says softly, a slight shake in his voice as he steps back from the window slightly.
No not stepping back. Kneeling. Kneeling down on one knee and holding the box he had placed in my hands at Athebyne out to me. The box he had told me to look after. And now I know why. Inside the box is a ring I had seen countless times growing up. Had seen it every summer when his family had come to stay with us. A beautiful silver band adorned with emeralds. His mother’s ring. Probably the only thing he had left of hers. I look down at Garrick with shock, his familiar cocky smirk on his face as he looks up at me.
“I know you said you’d let me know when you’re ready. But I will be damned if I’m waiting a moment longer to do this. Twice now I’ve thought I’d lost you. Twice I thought I’d lost my chance. Twice I’ve asked for someone’s blessing to marry their daughter and sister.”
Oh gods. This is really happening. And all I can do is stare down at Garrick in shock, just like he’s done when he’d seen me in to rotunda nearly a year ago. Or when I’d approached him near the Parapet on Reunification Day.
“Ophelia Riorson. Will you marry me?”
To Be Continued.....

My Worse Nightmare
Lost Sister Bonus Chapter - Garrick POV A lost sister bonus chapter from the day of the Calldyr executions and the boys finding out Ophelia is 'dead'.
Garrick Tavis x OC (Ophelia Riorson)
The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
One by one we watched them died. One by one we watched as we each received our rebellion relics. The runes Colonel Mairi had tempered into the storms we all clutched in our hands had marked us as we watched them all burn to death by dragon fire. General Melgren stood next to his dragon Codagh watching all of us. As if getting a kick out of us watching our parents burn to death. Here and there some of the younger children screamed and thrashed against the arms of older children. He almost looks angry that he’s getting no reaction out of Xaden and I. As the children of the leaders of the rebellion we’d been forced to stand front and centre. Right in front of our parents as they burned.
This was messed up. No child should have to watch their parent die right in front of them. Especially not in this way. Even I had to look away after meeting my parents eyes one last time. But even then I’d still seen it in my peripheral. Heard their screams as the fire claimed them. A memory I knew would haunt me forever. Even now, looking at the piles of ash in front of us all was daunting.
This didn’t feel real. Since it had happened, none of this had felt real. I was expecting to wake up at any given moment and all of this would be a dream. I’d wake up and everything was as it was. No war. No rebellion. And she…. I’d know where she was. Know she was safe. Part of me had hoped she’d turn up. Dragged here like the rest of us. But she was nowhere to be seen. No emerald green eyes meeting mine in the sea of rebellion children. Nothing to ground me in the horror we were all living.
She had to be safe. She had to be. Fen had taken her with him. Said she’d go somewhere safe. That she would be ok. But something about how he’d looked at Xaden and I told me otherwise. He’d been gagged. Unable to say a word to either of us as he stood in front of us. No way to tell us where she was. How we could find her. Or if she was even alive. No she was. She had to be. I couldn’t lose her to. I couldn’t lose her now. She had to be alive.
Shuffling feet meet my ears as the other children slowly make their way back to the tents they’d set us up in till they decided what to do with us. It wasn’t the best situation but at least we were all alive. The ground shakes beneath me and I look up to see Melgren and his dragon walking towards Xaden and I. A few others stopping behind us, curious as to what’s about to happen. Xaden who somehow kept his cool through all of this takes a big breath, steadying himself as he holds his head high.
They stop a few feet away from us. And the way he smirks at Xaden and I has my blood turn cold, my heart hammering in my chest. Codagh kneels down, giving Melgren access to something attached to him. I feel as if time slows down as he removes whatever it is from Codagh before turning back to us. Each step he takes towards us feels me with dread. As if he’s about to deliver a killing blow I’ll never expect. And he does. He delivers a killing blow that makes me wish this was a dream. That I’ll wake up, covered in a cold sweat from experiencing my worst nightmare. But I won’t wake up. Because this is all fucking real. I am living my worse nightmare.
A pack I’ve seen so nearly every day for gods knows how long soars through the air as he tosses it to us. None of us making a single move to catch it as it lands just in front of us. The black leather stained with what looks like dirt and blood. The clasp breaking open, the contents scattering across the ground in front of us.
Her favourite book. One I’d given to her as a birthday gift a few years ago after Bodhi had lost her original copy. She’d barely talked to him for weeks. Bodhi doing anything and everything to get her to forgive him. She had only started properly talking to him after I'd gotten it for her.
Her sketch book she’d draw in every day. Countless nights sitting in one of our rooms as she drew whatever came to mind. My head laid in her lap as she focused so intently on it. Occasionally running her fingers through my hair. God's, I'd always fall asleep so easily when she did that.
Some of the ribbons she would use to tie her hair up. The familiar red, blue and greens fluttering along the ground as they get caught in the wind. Just like they would when the wind would catch her braid or half up hairstyle she loved to do.
My heart stops at the last item that doesn’t quite make it out of the bag. But I know what it is. I’d given it to her the day before she’d left. I’d gone to her room just before she’d left in the dead of night with him. I’d technically already said my goodbye, but something told me to give her something of mine. Something for her to take with her. The blanket she always claimed when we were in my room. The one she’d always wrap around herself when she started getting tired. Little did she know my mother had made it with her in mind seeing as she was frequently over when we stayed in Aretia. I had meant to give it to her as a gift, but I never did for some reason. The way it had been laid on my bed, she probably assumed it was mine. Assumed my old one got ruined or something. And I couldn’t help but be selfish and keep it for myself even though she was the only one that used it.
I move without thinking, shoving Xaden aside as I go to lunge at the General. I barely get a few feet in front of Xaden before hands are grabbing at me, pulling me back as I struggle against them. Their fingers digging into my arms in an effort to hold me back. I can tell they’re talking at me, most likely telling me to stop. But none of their words register in my mind. My entire focus on the General walking back to his dragon. She was dead. She was gone. And it was because of him. He hadn’t uttered a single word, but he didn’t need to. And that bastard knew it. He had learned who she was. Knew what she meant to us. And now she was gone.
I’d never get to see those emerald green eyes I’d get lost in if I wasn’t careful. The late nights lying in our rooms, talking or in complete silence as we enjoyed each others company. No more cooking or baking mishaps the ended in us covered in flour. No more watching her put Bodhi and Xaden in line. No more smile…. Her smile. A smile that would instantly make my day better no matter what. She was gone. I’d never get to tell her how I truly felt. Tell her that she’d been my whole world since I’d met her. That I’d been hers the instant she turned around and her eyes met mine. We’d only been kids. But I knew. And now the permission I’d asked for from her father meant nothing. The ring my mother had given me, hidden at the bottom of my pack would never sit on her finger.
As Codagh takes off, I stop fighting against the hands holding me back. My knees giving out as I fall to the ground. Barely registering the pain that shoot’s up my legs as my knees hit the ground with a loud thud. All I can do is stare down at the pack that sits in front of me. Her sketch book blown open to one of her sketches. One I’d never seen before. She usually showed me what she drew, but over the last year or two she refused to show me some of them. Her cheeks always flushing a bright red as I tried to get a look. And now I knew why.
The drawing was from just before the fighting had started. We’d been sitting under some of the trees surrounding Riorson house. Both needing an escape from the chaos that had descended on us. She’d been sat across from me, something she never normally did. But it had been clear why. The drawing was of me. Leaning up against the tree while playing with the dagger I’d had on me. The background was drawn in a lighter charcoal as if out of focus. Meanwhile I’d been drawn in a darker charcoal, making me stand out. As if I was the main focus of the drawing. No. I was her main focus. As if I was all that mattered to her. The wind catches another page, landing on another drawing. Another one of me. This time lying against the headboard of my bed reading. And just like the last one I’m drawn in a much darker charcoal.
As if adding salt to the wound, the wind catches the damn book again, landing on another drawing of me. In a burst of anger I reach out, throwing the book across the ground. Nearly hitting Bodhi and Xaden who stand there watching me. The only ones left to witness my whole world fall apart. As I look up I note how devastated they also look. Bodhi not even trying to hold back his tears. His bottom lip wobbling as he tries to hold it together. And then Xaden. I could see the anger burning in his eyes. His jaw and fists clenched tightly in an effort to ground himself. Even he hadn’t tried to stop the few tears that had managed to escape. His eyes finally flicker up to meet mine. It’s then I see the proper pain in them. Just like me he had hoped she was still alive. Had gotten somewhere safe just like Fen had said he would do. But now all we had left of her was the pack sitting in front of us. Up Next: Asking Permission (Fen Riorson)

hi friend!! I wanna be the first to send a director’s cut ask hehe. I’m so excited that you’re doing these, they’re so fun. I adore Ophelia and Dahlia and I’m very excited to see more of them ❤️🖤
I don’t have a specific chapter to pick out for Ophelia, since there’s a too many to choose from, but can you tell us a little bit about Garrick and Ophelia pre-Basgiath? what was their relationship like? was she part of the gang with G/X/Bo, or regarded as a tag-along who they “had to take trick or treating with them”? when did Garrick fall for her, or start to; before she “died”, or when they reunited at Basgiath? he was clearly affected by the sight of her with her natural hair, so I’m thinking before hehe
also, did Xaden ever give Garrick the “shovel talk” about this whole thing off-screen, or does he trust gare enough not to have to threaten him? how does G&O being a couple affect their friendship? is Xaden glad that it’s Garrick of all people who loves and protects his sister, or is that outweighed by him being (only a little) grossed out by this whole thing?
if you’ve answered these already I’m sorry, I think I may have missed a few parts and I need to do a whole re-read sometime in one sitting. and don’t feel pressured to answer all of these. I know it’s a lot of questions, and some of them you might want to keep secret for now.
okay that’s it for now hehe love ya!! here’s a bouquet of flowers for you and some strawberries from my garden too since I can’t deliver them to you in person 💐🍓🍓
💗 Liz @callsign-rogueone
I was having so much fun reading yours, and it made me want to do my own. And thank you for being the first one! Ophelia & Garrick Pre Basgiath. She is definitely part of the gang from day one. Her and Xaden have always gotten along and she was attached to his hip from the moment she could walk. So she just naturally became apart of their group. I've gone into this a lot with @fw-gt in terms of Garrick and Ophelia's relationship. But her and Garrick have always been close. Whenever Garrick's family was in Aretia/Riorson House, she would always be over at his place and his mum loved her. Garrick's mum would spoil the hell out of her. She'd constantly be getting O to stay for dinner, stay the night etc. In my head I've had these scenarios of these two attempting to cook in the kitchen and getting into mischief (throwing flour and things at each other etc), her sitting on the counter while he does something for his mum. Or them sitting in his room late at night talking and them both falling asleep, only to be found by his mum the next morning asleep in each others arms. Garrick's mum has always been their biggest supporter, secretly hoping when they got older they would get together (she of course sadly never sees this happen). But Garrick fell for her well before Basgiath. I'd probably say early teens he started realising his feelings were changing for her and developing into something more. Which then lead to some not so subtle comments from Xaden and Bodhi. There is something you'll find out in Part 40 to do with his feelings towards her Pre Basgiath as well. Xaden & Garrick's Relationship (in regards to Ophelia) They do have a talk off-screen. This gets referenced in Part 10 and 12 when Xaden talks to Ophelia and before Garrick and Ophelia get together in Part 13. I am actually tempted to do a Garrick POV Bonus Part of one of these moments..... But Xaden very much trusts Garrick with her. There would be some jokes about him threatening Garrick, but overall he knows Garrick would do anything for her. And he is very glad it's Garrick. He's been there since day one of them knowing each other, so he's watched their entire friendship form and develop into something more. So even though we get a few moments of him being grossed out (Part 20 - "what did I say about the silencing wards!"), he is very happy for the two of them. Though after they find out she is alive there are a few moments between Garrick and Xaden of "pull it together and go tell her how you feel" and Xaden being done with them avoiding each other. And don't be sorry, I love going into this kind of thing. So if there is anything else, please don't hesitate to ask! My brain is full of behind the scenes details.

The Lost Sister - Part 2
Synopsis: Xaden is known as an only child due to his sister who 'died' during the Rebellion. Little do they know she didn't die and has been so close this entire time.
A/N: Thank you all for the lovely responses to the first post. And I couldn't agree more about the Garrick pairing, so I will start working towards that! Yet again any feedback or suggestions is always welcome.
The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
It feels like hours pass as Xaden and I stare at each other. Even though I knew all these years he was alive, its still a shock to see him in front of me. As usual he is hard to read, but I notice the small twitch in his hand almost as if he is restraining himself from reaching out to me. I know he wont do it though. Neither of us wants to give General Melgren the satisfaction he is chasing in this moment.
In the 5 years since I’ve seen him he’s grown to look more like our father. He always did, but now the resemblance is more notable. Same dark hair, same tanned skin, and the same Onyx eyes. Only different now is he’s gotten bigger, and the mark that snakes its way onto his neck from his uniform. The same mark I have but on the opposite side.
”A mark to show who you really are.”
A girl appears at Xadens side trying to get his attention while she looks through her notes. But her efforts are futile as Xaden stares at me. For the last 5 years he thought me dead. But here I am. And he doesn’t dare take his eyes off me, especially with General Melgren at my side.
Movement to the other side of Xaden catches his attention. As Xaden tilts his head towards them, I feel my heart drop again for the second time. And unlike my brother, their face does not hide the shock at seeing me in front of them alive.
Garrick.
A close friend of mine and Xaden’s. We had all grown up together along with Bodhi. Was he also here? He had to be, right? I could look around and find out, but I dont want to move my eyes from them. Xaden finally tears his eyes from mine and turns to the girl next to him. Her eyes go wide as he says something to her. Her eyes move back and forth between Xaden and I frantically. She finally nods her head and shuffles though her notes and writes something down.
Whispers have picked up around the rotunda, but as Xaden steps forward it goes silent in an instance. Its almost eerie the power he wields over them. He’s clearly one of the better rides in the Quadrant.
“Ophelia Riorson. Fourth Wing, Second Squad, Flame Section.” He calls out.
A hum picks up around the rotunda which is quickly silenced by a stern look from Xaden. But it doesn’t stop the eyes. The hundreds of eyes staring right at me. A mixture of shock and confusion on all the faces now standing at me. I look around trying to find where I am meant to go, but its hard to tell with everyone looking at me. Off to my right someone steps out and motions me forward. I go to move towards them when a tight grip on my wrist spins me around, stopping me in my path.
General Melgren pulls me in close so only I can hear him. “Don’t go pulling any stunts with that brother of yours. I will be watching.” He hisses at me before roughly releasing my wrist.
I walk away as quickly as I can to put as much space between us until threshing in a few months. If I make it to threshing. As I turn back around I see Xaden has an arm out in front of Garrick. He must have moved when Melgren grabbed me.
Xaden resumes whatever speech he was giving before my arrival as General Melgren and the others leave. I don’t hear a word he says as I turn and watch as the General leaves. Almost as if I don’t trust him till he is out of sight. But even as he disappears around the corner, I still get the feeling I’m not completely free from him.
I look to my right and see my squad looking at me. As I look through them I recognise a few other marked ones. Then my eyes fall on Violet Sorrengail. I didn’t have much to do with her during my time with Melgren. But we had studied together in the Archives and talked at dinners we had both attended over my five years here. By the shock in her eyes she had no clue who I really was. I doubt she will want much to do with me now she knows who I really am.
“You sure you’re related to him?” Someone next to me asks.
My eyes move to a boy next to me with dark hair that flops down over his forehead. He’s looking me over as if trying to figure out how I’m related to Xaden. I don’t blame him. Besides the new mark on my arm and neck, I look nothing like my brother. My skin is a slightly lighter shade with freckles scattered over my cheeks and nose, green eyes that are a stark contrast to his onyx ones, and dyed dark burgundy hair.
”Pretty sure.” I say back as we are dismissed for the rest of the day.
Our squad leader I recognise as Dain Aetos tells us to follow him. As he leads us across the rotunda my eyes move towards Xaden and Garrick who are still atop the stairs looking at me. This time joined by Bodhi who is also looking at me. I feel myself relax knowing all three are alive and well. All I want to do is run up there, but I know I will get in trouble for doing so.
Dain shows us around the quadrant, point out places of interest such as classes before leading us into the first year dorms. Until threshing we will all be sleeping down here together. If we bond a dragon at threshing in a few months time we will be given our own private rooms.
I make my way down the walkway between the beds trying to find a free one. I look up to see Violet motioning me over and points to a bed next to hers.
”Didn’t think you would want anything to do with me after that.” I tell her as I place my pack on the bed.
The smile she gives me is so genuine. Her opinion of me hasn’t changed since the events of today.
”Hardly. We need all the allies we can get in here.” She tells me before walking away.
The dorm is quite empty as everyone heads off towards dinner. I dont blame them. I’m starving after the events of today, and I had the easiest walk over the parapet compared to all of them. I quickly sheathe some of the daggers I managed to hide in my pack into my boots before making my way out the door towards the smell of food. Hopefully I will get to see my brother and friends there.
I stop in my tracks as I walk past a pillar. I feel like I am being watched. But as I assess the area, I come up short. The shadows are extremely dark in here and it makes it hard to see if anyone is hiding behind one of the pillars. But I know someone's watching me. I push the feeling aside as I go to step towards the dining hall. But I barely make it a step before someone wraps a hand around my mouth as I’m pulled into the shadows.
Bonus photo of what Ophelia looks like as well. Part 3

The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
I had only seen Garrick lost for words a few times in my life. But this had to take top spot. Even above him finding out I was alive after all those years. Back then I hadn’t looked entirely like me. The red hair a stark contrast to the black hair he had seen me grow up with. Back then I hadn’t fully felt like me. Like something was missing. And now, standing in front of Garrick with my hair its natural black, it felt like I was. Bodhi gives me a brief smile and nod before quickly leaving Garrick and I alone. It was one thing Bodhi was always good at. He always knew how to read a situation or moment. And he knew this moment was just for Garrick and I. Garrick who has not moved a single muscle, still frozen to the spot staring at me. I step forward cautiously, as if trying to approached a startled animal. But honestly with how Garrick is looking at me, he almost is a startled animal. Frozen to the spot, not knowing what to do.
”I was expecting a reaction of out this, but I wasn’t expecting to leave you speechless.” I tease as I stop in front of him, placing my hands on his shoulders as I run my hands down his arms.
Despite the heat, Garrick shivers under my touch. His breathing coming out shaky and uneven as he just stares at me.
”To be fair sweetheart, the last time I saw you with this hair, was the last time I thought I saw you alive.” He says softly as he captures my hands in his. “I thought I'd lost you forever." His voice trembles slightly as he lifts my hands to his lips, pressing a tender kiss against my knuckles.
”But you didn’t.” I say softly as I cup one of his cheeks with my hand, Garrick immediately leaning into my touch. “I’m here. Alive. And I’m not going anywhere.”
”I know, but I still wake up every day pinching myself to make sure it’s real. Make sure you really are here with me. So excuse me if I need a moment to make sure this is actually real when you look like…” Garrick’s eyes move down my body, before landing on my exposed leg in the slit of my skit. His hands grabbing at the material. “How did I not notice this?”
”And you’re meant to be the observant run. Must have really got you good.” I tease.
”You did. In more ways than one.” He muses
I go to ask what he means, but I feel the tug of his emotions. I open my mind to them, and know instantly what Garrick wants. As if knowing I’ve reach out to his emotions, Garrick pulls me flush against him.
And with one swift movement, he captures my lips with his own, pouring all the love and longing he's been harbouring into our kiss. His hands wrap around me tightly as if afraid I might disappear again. "I love you," he murmurs against my lips, his voice thick with emotion.
"I love you too," I respond, pulling back just enough to look into his eyes. His gaze is intense, filled with relief and unspoken promises. I can't help but smile at him, my heart swelling with the love I feel for this man. Holding onto him tightly, I whisper, "And I'm not going anywhere, I promise."
And with that Garrick bends down, scooping me up into his arms before walking us over to the dorms. With how fast he’s walking, I don’t complain about him picking me up. There was no way I would have been able to keep up. Within minutes he’s kicking his door closed and placing me on his bed as he kneels in front of me. His hands caressing the exposed skin of my legs, trailing down to start untying the boots I had opted for over the slippers most people wore.
His movements are slow and deliberate, his eyes never leaving mine. It's as if he's afraid that any sudden movement might shatter the moment. After the boots are off, he gently caresses up my leg, his mouth leaving a trail kisses up the inside of my leg. Each kiss causing me to shiver in anticipation of what's to come. Garrick grips the back of my legs, pulling me to the edge of the bed, sliding my underwear down before hooking both my legs over his shoulder as he manoeuvres the skirt to leave me completely open to him. I barely get a glimpse of the hungry look in Garrick’s eyes before his mouth is on me.
”Garrick” I breathe out, my hands tugging on his curls as his arms hook around my thighs, holding open as they try to close around his head. His hands sure to leave marks from how tight he was gripping me.
Within seconds I can barely keep my self upright, laying down on the bed as profanities fall from my lips. Garrick was licking and sucking like a starved man. My thighs shaking much quicker than normal as Garrick adds his fingers to the mix. Curling them with every thrust. Hitting a spot that has my eyes rolling into the back of my head, back arching off the bed as I grind on his face.
”Eager, Mo Gradh?” He breathes out, replacing his tongue with his thumb as he stares up at me.
His hazel eyes blown out, curls dishevelled from my hands, and my arousal glistening on his lips that have formed into his signature smirk.
”Always eager for- Fuck!” I moan out, eyes rolling back in my head again as he adds another finger.
I barely hear his chuckle before he dives back in, pretty much making out with me. His tongue dragging along my folds, his lips wrapping around my clit and sucking sharply before alternating between harsh sucks and lightly flicking it with his tongue. It doesn’t take long before I’m clenching around his fingers, trying to ride his face more. Each thrust of his fingers bringing me dangerously close to the edge.
”You want to cum sweetheart?” He asks, his voice low and gravelly. “C’mon then, finish for me Mo Gradh.”
As if my body was waiting for the words, I become a shaking moaning mess as I ride Garrick’s fingers, my legs clamping around his head as I arch fully off the bed. I can barely hear Garrick over the intense pleasure racking my body as he rides me through my high. His fingers not faltering once as he prolongs it, dragging it out as long as he can. I barely register the bed sinking before Garrick pulls me into his lap, pulling my chest flush against his as he starts to undo the corset of my uniform. His arousal very evident between my legs. I open my eyes slowly to see him smiling down at me as I rest my head against his shoulder.
”Welcome back to the land of the living.” He teases as his fingers trail down my now exposed back, causing me to shiver.
”Was I out long?” I mutter as I lazily stroke up and down his chest.
”Long enough to undress and pull you into my lap without any response.” He muses as he unclasps my skirt, letting it fall to the floor with my corset.
”Maybe I need to dye my hair black more often.” I tease as I sit back, looking him directly in the eyes.
Garrick hums in agreement before burying his face in my neck and slowly kissing down my neck. “You are never changing your hair from black again.” He growls into my neck, his hands tightening on my waist.
”You going to tie me down to make sure I don’t?” I tease, grinding down on him, his teeth biting down on my neck causing me to gasp.
”Oh don’t give me ideas sweetheart.” He mumbles into my neck.
Garrick’s hands go to grab my wrists, probably intent on pinning me down. But I was quicker. I reach into his mind, tell his body to lie down, hands above his head. And he does. Garrick’s eyes going wide with panic as he tries to sit up and move his arms. I giggle as I rise on my knees as I hover above him, reaching down between us to line us up. Instantly Garrick’s eyes go from panicked to aroused. Garrick opens his mouth to speak, but I quickly lower myself onto him, my arousal from earlier make it very easy to sink down onto him in one smooth motion. I feel Garrick’s mind fight against my control. Wanting to reach out and place his hands on my hips. To guide me up and down as he thrusts up into me. But I command him not to. Watching as he fights between being aroused but also wanting to be in control. I hadn’t told him I had started to master my control over people. Only recently turning Carr’s janky puppet like movements into smooth almost believable movements. I place my hands on Garrick’s chest, using it as leverage as I slowly move up and down, feeling as Garrick fights my control more as his head rolls back into the bed, his back arching off the bed with the little amount of movement I let him have. Every second that passes I watch as he struggles against the control, wanting more freedom. After a few more minutes of watching Garrick be a mixture of blissed out pleasure and struggling against my will, I let go of his mind. It takes a few seconds for Garrick to realise he’s got full control, his eyes going wide as he goes to fight against my will but his heads fly out and grasp onto my hips like he’s been trying to for the last few minutes. His cocky grin appears on his face as he moves into a kneeling position, holding me in his lap as I wrap my legs around him. His hips lazily thrusting up into me as he buries his head in my neck.
”I don’t know if I should be impressed you can do that now, or if I should fuck you stupid for putting me through that torture.” Garrick mumbles into my my neck.
”How about you be impressed later.” I breath out, arching into Garrick as he bites lightly on my neck.
”I like the sound of that.” He muses.
In true Garrick fashion he’s manoeuvred us into a new position within seconds, a squeal escaping my lips as my back lands on the bed. My hands above my head, trapped in the tight grip of one of Garrick’s. I pout up at him as he laughs at me.
”Two can play at that game sweetheart. Time for you to get a taste of your own medicine.”
Cocky bastard.
I could have spoken out loud, but there was something satisfying about seeing the initial shock in Garrick’s eyes whenever I spoke in his mind. And as usual I see the fleeting panic in his eyes before the cockiness returns. His free hand manoeuvres my legs to rest on his shoulders. A favourite position of his, cause it always hit the perfect spot. And with the cocky glint in his eyes I knew I would be a mumbling mess within minutes if that. Garrick moves his hips slowly, easing me into the new position. I was already squirming against him, my arms fighting the grip he had on my wrists above my head. Each thrust just hitting that perfect spot. Just enough to have me satisfied, but also wanting move.
”P-please Garrick.” I mumble as I arch off the bed.
”Do you want me to go faster Mo Gradh? Want me to fuck you stupid?” He teases.
I gasp as he reaches between us, fingers lightly caressing my clit. Causing me to squirm and writher beneath him. Gods he was being cocky tonight.
”Y-yes. Please Garrick.” I plead.
And he does. Both hands moving to grip my hips as he lifts them up off the bed before thrusting into me. My hands finding purpose on the bed beneath us as I grip onto the sheets tightly. I thank the gods we regularly check the sound wards we put on Garrick’s room as I moan his name loudly, followed by a mix of profanities. Which only spurs Garrick on as his pace increases, to the point I barely get a break between his cock hitting that perfect spot deep inside me. The familiar feeling building between my legs happens way quicker than normal, but gods I was not complaining with how good it felt. As I open my eyes to look up at Garrick, I see him blissfully looking down at me, also close to being done. His hazel eyes blown out. His cheeks thoroughly flushed. And a few of his curls stuck to his forehead. I’m so lost in his eyes I don’t see his hand move before his fingers meet my clit again. I cry out as I arch my back, eyes rolling back in my head as I tip over the edge. I vaguely hear Garrick cry out my name as he falls forward, bracing him self on his hands either side of me. His hips slow down their pace as he rolls to his side, pulling me with him as he pulls me into a heated kiss. I whimper against his lips as he slowly pulls out of me, his arms constricting around me as he pulls me closer.
It feels like our bliss only lasts a few seconds before we hear doors slamming and commotion outside. Garrick and I break apart, trying to listen for what could be going on. I go to relax back into Garrick’s embrace as the noise settles down. But a bell sounding in the distance has us both sitting bolt up right. We’re under attack.

The Shovel Talk
Lost Sister Bonus Part - Garrick POV
The first of our bonus chapters for Lost Sister from Garrick's POV! This one covers Part 6 & 7 from Ophelia's POV.
Garrick Tavis x OC (Ophelia Riorson)
The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
I watch as the healer cleans the blood from where Imogen kneed her in the face. A knee to the face I should have stopped. A fight I should have stopped. A fight that was going to leave Ophelia with questions. Questions I couldn’t deny any more. But god damn, had she put up a good fight. It was rare to see another rider but Imogen in her place. And she had done it with ease. It was becoming clear she had been trained well over the last few years. As much as I hated the General, I was grateful he was the reason she was alive.
As the healer walks away I finally push off the wall, pulling up a chair next to her. Her eyes focusing on me as I reach up and tilt her to the side. I had to give it to the healer, she’d done a good job. Not a single mark was left on her face.
”You two really did a number on each other.” A chuckle escaping my lips as I look into her green eyes.
”You finally going to tell me what the hell is up with you and Imogen.” She snaps out at me.
I can’t help the way I flinch and recoil at the tone in her voice. A tone I’ve never heard from her in my life. Even in the few times her and Xaden would yell at each other, I’d never heard her sound like this. I avert my gaze to my hands now fidgeting in my lap.
“I promise you there is nothing going on-”
”Bullshit.” She snaps again, cutting me off as I look back up at her.
Idiot. Why had I denied it? She always valued truth and honesty. She could read people like a book. And the way Imogen had gone at her today was just proof of the history between us. A history I could no longer deny, even if it meant nothing to me.
“For me there’s nothing going on with her. We hooked up a few times, but that was it.” I admit to her, hoping she can see the truth in my eyes.
I’d made it clear to Imogen from the beginning. Made it clear it was just something casual. That someone else had my heart. That I couldn’t give her more than something casual. But the more it happened, the harder it was to convince her that I didn’t want more. Any time I’d had a rough day, had something remind me of her… I ended up in Imogen’s bed. And with Ophelia returning, I hadn’t gone back to her once. Imogen was quick to put together who held my heart instead of her.
”But I made it clear I wanted nothing serious. But it is becoming clear those hook ups meant more to her than just something casual.”
I can see the hurt in her eyes as she processes what I’m saying.
”You never struck me as the casual hook up type.” She admits as she averts her gaze from mine.
I slowly nod in agreement as I look back down at my hands. She was right. The Garrick she knew before she died turned down every damn girl. Because none of them were her. None of them were the girl who sat in front of me. She was my everything. Until she wasn’t. Until I thought she was gone. Until I broke a promise I made all those years ago.
”Honestly, I’m not. But there are times while you are here where you just need someone. And the person I needed. The person I wanted more than just a casual hook up with,” I look up to see her looking back at me. Her eyes going wide as if she knows exactly what I’m about to say. “Well I kind of thought they were dead till recently.”
All I can hear is my damn heart beating in my chest. Beating so loudly and fast I’m sure she can hear and see it. I can see the panic in her eyes as she takes in my words. Shit. Had I been wrong all those years? Had my damn feelings been one sided all this time? No. Definitely not. But I can’t help the panic that’s slowly setting in as she continues to stare at me with those damn green eyes.
Shuffling feet pull us from our trance, the healer returning with a tub of healing balm clutched in their hands that she holds out to Ophelia. “Here you go lovely, just apply it to any bruising that appears.”
She moves so damn fast that I feel like I blink and she’s halfway across the medical wing with the healing balm clutched in her hands. The chair scrapes against the floor as I rush to stand. Knocking it to the ground with a loud bang that startles the poor healer as I go to rush after her.
“Ophelia! Wait!” I call out, hoping she hears me and stops.
But as I burst through the door, she’s nowhere to be seen. God damn she was fast. Nothing new. She’d always been able to out run us all as kids. I was stupid to think it would be any different now. I set off in the direction of the riders quadrant, the only way she could have gone if she was fleeing. As I get closer and closer, the few riders scattered around are looking around with puzzled looks on their faces. She definitely came this way. But as I reach the Rotunda where I had hoped to catch her, there isn’t a single trace of her.
”She ran into the dorms, took the stairs by the looks of it.” A familiar voice calls out to me.
I look to my right, Liam leaning against the stone wall as he carves away at a piece of wood. He was still in the early stages, no shape to give away what it was going to be just yet. Though based off what I’d seen him making recently, it was probably another dragon.
”Thanks, I owe you.” I call to him before taking off in the direction of the dorms
Riders turn and stare as I rush past them, doing my best to catch up as I take multiple stairs at a time. If she took the stairs there are only two places she could have gone. Second or third year dorms, and it was easy to narrow down where she had gone. There’s no way she’d have gone to Xaden’s room. And definitely no way she had gone to mine seeing as I was the one she was running from. Leaving only one person she would go to. Bodhi.
I knock on his door louder than I intend in my rush to find her. “Bodhi are you there? I’m looking for Ophelia.”
My heart drops when he opens his door, a confused look on his face. Shit, she wasn’t here. Where the hell had she gone?
”No, she’s not here. Everything ok?” He asks as he furrows his brow at me.
I probably looked like a mess right now. Chest rising and falling as I catch my breath from running over here, hair dishevelled from running my hands through it. He’d only ever seen me like this once. And ironically it was also because of her.
”Ahh yeah. Just someone said she came this way. And you’re the only second year I could think of that she would go to.” I say, shoulders slumping as I realise I’ve lost her.
Bodhi must notice it, hear the sadness in my voice as he gives me a tight lipped smile. “Do you want to go for a walk? Looks like you have something on your mind.”
”Yeah, that would be great actually.” I say with a nod, stepping back to let Bodhi out of his room.
We walk in silence, Bodhi clearly knowing this is a conversation to have in private away from other cadets. Both of us instinctively going to the stairs that will take us up to the tower where we have most of the conversations we don’t want others to hear. For a while the only sound we hear is our footsteps echoing off the walls as we climb higher and higher, but as we near the top two voices waft down to us from the top. After a few more steps it becomes clear who it is, and as we push open the door we’re greeted with Xaden and Liam.
Xaden’s head snaps towards me, taking in my grim expression and slouched shoulders. “Is she ok?” he snaps out as he takes a step towards me.
I can hear the worry in his voice. It’s rare for Xaden to show emotion in his voice, but around those he deems close he lets his usual mask slip. Paired with the fact the last time he saw me I was carrying his bleeding sister towards the healers quadrant, his worry is valid with how I look.
”Yeah…. She’s fine.” I mutter as I run my hand through my hair for what feels like the hundredth time today.
His brow furrows as he looks at me, clearly confused as to why I look so grim. Before I can explain Bodhi starts snickering as he walks over and leans against the pillar next to Liam.
”Yeah if you count fine as running to my room in hysterics because someone finally admitted their feelings.” He says casually as if it’s everyday conversation. My head snaps to him as I see red. Bodhi cowering as I shift from freaking out to angry.
“She was in your room the entire time!” I yell as I start storming towards him before Xaden catches my arm, my head snapping towards him instead.
Xaden cocks a brow at me as if to ask what the hell am I doing going after Bodhi. I sigh and do my best to relax. The only reason Bodhi would lie about seeing her was because she had asked. Because she needed time alone. Which given how shocked she had looked before running off, it was clear she needed some space right now. And seeing as I’d just gone from thinking my world was ending to wanting to rip off Bodhi’s head, I also needed time to clear my head and gather my thoughts.
”Did she say anything? About what happened? What she thought?” I ask, turning back to Bodhi who has returned to his spot against the pillar.
”No, all she managed to do was blurt out you essentially told her you loved her and then got angry at me when I laughed and threw the healing balm at me before you knocked on my door.” He explains.
”Did she manage to hit you in the head and knock some sense into you?” Xaden teases from next to me.
Bodhi jokingly glares at Xaden before rolling his eyes. “No, and I have plenty of sense thank you.”
”So what exactly happened?” Liam asks, pulling my attention from Xaden and Bodhi.
I walk over to the ledge, bracing my hands on the top as I look over Basgiath. No point hiding anything now that Bodhi had blurted out a very simplified version of what had happened at the end. And Xaden would kill me if I didn’t fully explain what happened.
“She asked me about Imogen.” I admit, a collective sharp intake of breath coming from the group around me.
“I bet that went well.” Bodhi mutters followed by a loud smack, most likely from Liam who was still next to him.
“About as well as you can imagine. Don’t think I’ve ever seen her that angry.” I say, managing to chuckle slightly at the memory.
As much as it had scared me to see her snap at me like that. It honestly didn’t surprise me considering what I’d seen Xaden do sometimes. She was definitely going to have no issues taking care of herself here.
“You tried to deny it didn’t you?” Xaden drawls as he leans against the pillar next to me.
I don’t even have to look to know he’s raised his brow at me, looking at me like I’m an idiot. He knows she would only have gotten mad at me if I’d tried to deny it. Which I had. Like a goddamn idiot.
“I want to say I didn’t. But I did.” I mutter, mentally slapping myself for doing so.
Would it have turned out differently if I hadn’t denied it? Probably not. She probably still would have freaked out.
“I’d tell you you’re an idiot but I can tell you already know that.”
I turn my head to glare at him, to see him already looking at me with a grin that says everything I need to know. He’s glad I finally admitted my feelings, but also getting a kick out of the situation.
“Yeah I’m fully aware I’m an idiot. I should have just told her. I should have known she’d essentially turn into you when I denied it.”
“What’s that suppose to mean?” His grin faltering.
“Oh you know exactly what he means,” Bodhi jokes as Liam snickers next to him before they both cower from the shadows looking at their feet.
I’d seen what Xaden could do with those shadows, and so had those two. Safe to say those two were keeping their mouths shut for a bit.
“I just don’t think she would run like that. I was always so sure she felt the same way.” I confess as I push off the ledge, turning to pace back and forth in an effort to clear my head of the doubt forming.
“She does. Don’t doubt that for a second. She might not say it, but you can tell by the way she acts she does. She always has. Just like for you, it’s always been you for her.” Xaden says in a tone I hadn’t heard in years. The last time I’d heard it was when I’d confessed my feelings to her after we thought she was dead.
“Then why did she look so shocked and run off like that. I thought…”
“You thought she’d leap into your arms and that would be that?” Bodhi adds, a slight teasing tone to his voice.
I was going to have to show him a lesson on the mat later if he kept this up. He was not helping my mood at all. Just like Xaden he was getting a kick out of this, and I didn’t like it. This was going to be hell till I sorted this out.
“Not like that, but I didn’t expect her to run off like I’d told her the worst news in the world. She probably hates me for the Imogen thing.”
“You’re spiralling and it isn’t a good look for you.” Xaden adds, causing me to stop my pacing as I turn to look at him. “She won’t hate you for the Imogen thing. You thought she was dead. She knows if you knew she was alive it wouldn’t have happened. She probably just needs some time to think about it and process it. Give her some time.”
I nod in agreement. As much as she was like Xaden, she was also different from him in many ways. Even as a kid she would often take her time to process things or think about it. And it probably hadn’t helped I’d properly admitted my feelings to her after also admitting I’d slept with Imogen. Probably should have picked a better time for that.
“Yeah, you’re right. I’ll talk to her tomorrow.”
“Good.” He says with a nod, before his expression quickly turns serious and almost deadly. “And don’t say anything stupid when you do. You might be the only guy I’d allow to be with her, but I will not hesitate to come after you if you break her heart. I might consider you a brother, but she’s my sister and I will not hesitate to go after anyone that hurts her. Even you.”
Out of the corner of my eye I see Liam and Bodhi struggling to hold their laughter in. Both pursing their lips as I glance their way before turning back to Xaden and nodding.
“Noted, hurt her and I’m six feet under.”
“Six feet under in a hole dug by those two idiots.” He says nodding towards Bodhi and Liam.
“Who are you calling idiots?” Bodhi exclaims while glaring at his cousin.
“The two that have been trying not to laugh like a pack of Hyenas for the last few minutes.” He grumbles before pushing off the ledge, heading back to the quadrant with them both rushing after him.
Never a dull day in this fucking death sentence of a college.

As we land I spy Garrick across the field, crystal egg held high above his head, Dain waving the flag above his head that I had given back on the flight back to the flight field. Nearly every rider in Fourth Wing is rushing towards the pair like they are gods. And to me one of them is. One of them is mine. I can’t help but watch as he’s pulled into one armed hugs, clapped on the shoulder, shaking hands. He’s in his element. And I can’t help but smile at how happy he is.
As if sensing my gaze, Garrick’s hazel eyes snap to mine across the flight field. Not paying a single bit of attention to the riders gathered around him once our eyes meet. Without looking away from me he tosses the egg to Bodhi who stands next to him before pushing through the crowd. Bodhi looks at the egg shocked, as if not expecting Garrick to part with it so easily. Hell the Garrick I knew would never pass on the opportunity to gloat and celebrate the win as the centre of attention. But as Bodhi looks to where Garrick has walked off and see’s me, a massive smirk adorns his face as he shakes his head at us. I had promised Garrick a reward if he got the egg. And that he had done, using Xaden being distracted by Violet’s signet to his advantage. And he was going to get his reward.
The crowd parts easily for Garrick before he even gets close to them. His presence parting the way for him. Creating a path directly towards me as I slowly walk over to him. He rushes forward when only a few feet separate us, his hands cupping my cheeks as he leans down, his lips greedily kissing mine. Not a care in the world that half the quadrant or my brother can see us. The cheers of our friends and fellow cadets fade into a distant hum as we focus solely on each other. Garrick slowly pulls back, his hands still placed firmly on my cheeks as we slowly open our eyes and look at each other.
“That reward still up for grabs?” He asks huskily, his lips ghosting mine.
”Depends whose asking.” I tease, a chuckle rumbling through his body.
Garrick’s right hand lightly drifts down my neck and arm before resting on my waist, pulling me closer into him. His hand digging tightly into the small bit of skin that has become exposed. His hazel eyes fixating on mine.
”You’re boyfriend.” He whispers, his breathing slightly shaky as if he’s nervous. No he is nervous. “Hell, I’d be more if you want it. Whenever you’re ready, say it and I’m all yours sweetheart.”
My eyes go wide as I take in Garrick’s words. But know everything he speaks is true as I feel the love and devotion rolling off him. The strength of his emotions being the strongest I had ever felt since I got my signet. Which was saying something now I could block most of that out with ease, only calling on it when I needed to. As much as I wanted to say yes, say those words to make him mine. I wanted the moment I said those words to be us. Just us. Not in a flight field full of cadets watching us.
”One day.” I say as I reach up and cup his cheek with my hand, Garrick instantly nuzzling into it and placing a kiss to my palm. “I promise I will one day, even though I want to say those words so badly right now.”
He smiles and nods, understanding even if I don’t say it right now, he is mine and I am his. Have been for a very long time.
”But I think I owe someone a reward for capturing a certain egg.” Grabbing Garrick’s hand and leading him off the flight field as a chorus of cheers and whistle follow us down the stairs to the quadrant.
As soon as I shut the door Garrick tries to push me up against it. Eager to take control like he normally would. But not today. Today I had a different plan. A fleeting look of confusion flickers in Garrick’s eyes before widening in shock as I send him stumbling backwards into his desk, his hands bracing on the edge to stop him falling over. I step forward, shrugging off my flight jacket as Garrick watches me intently. I can feel the confusion and curiosity flowing off him as I open my shield to his emotions. Wanting to feel and experience everything he does. Garrick’s throat bobs as I stop in front of him, his eyes flicking down to my hands as I slowly tug on the ties of his pants. Slowly pulling them down his legs as he kicks off his flight boots and removes his jacket and shirt. Leaving Garrick standing in front of my in just his underwear, his arousal very evident.
”Mo Gradh….” He mutters as he looks at me with hooded eyes, reaching out to me to pull him against him.
”Shh… let me take care of you.” I whisper as I hook my fingers into the waistband of his underwear, slowly pulling them down as I kneel in front of him.
Garrick’s eyes go wide as he realises what I’m planning. I had tried before but he had always pulled me up, clearly worried I wouldn’t enjoy it as he wasn’t exactly small.
“Y-you don’t have t-”
I lean forward, tracing the tip of him with my tongue. Garrick’s hand fly's forward to my hair, his fingers tangling in the braid I had done for War Games. I look up to see Garrick looking at me with hooded eyes, lips parted. I keep my eyes locked with his as I swirl my tongue over the tip again before I take him fully. Garrick’s head rolling back, a moan escaping his slightly parted lips.
”F-fuck Ophelia,” Garrick moans as I take him deeper, his fingers tightening in my hair as I take him fully. “F-feels so g-good.”
I can feel Garrick holding back, not fully letting go. Not wanting to lose control. But I wanted him to. I wanted him to . I take him fully again, reaching up a cupping his ball, rolling then gently in his fingers. His hips fully lifting off the desk as a low groan slips past his lips as I hollow out my cheeks. Garrick’s eyes snap open, and I watch as something in him snaps. His composure letting go. His hands move to the end of my braid, throwing away the tie and loosening my hair before gripping it in his hands in a makeshift ponytail. before he sets his own pace as I brace my hands on his thick thighs.
”That’s it sweetheart.” He moans, sending a shiver through me. His words doing more to me than they should. “You’re doing so good.”
Our moans mix together, echoing off the walls of his dorm room. Each thrust becoming more and more urgent as Garrick chases his release. My mouth strains to fit all of him over and over again. But I don’t stop. I panic as my teeth lightly scrape along his length every so often, but he only moans when it happens.
His thrusts start to falter ever so slightly as he gets closer. But suddenly Garrick stops. Pulling me urgently up from the floor, crashing his lips into mine. His hands pushing and pulling at the last of my uniform I hadn’t taken off before taking him in my mouth. Only caring about pleasing him in the moment. Garrick’s hands begin to roam over my body, cupping and squeezing my breasts as he kisses down my neck leaving small love bites along the way. Marking me as his. Not uncommon for him to do. But never on my neck. He wanted these to be seen. He grips the back of my thighs, lifting me up with ease before securing my legs around his waist. I expect him to walk us to the bed. But he walks us over to his desk chair, positioning me directly over him. My fingers digging into his arms as he sits down, lowering me onto him in one smooth movement. My mouth open in a silent moan as I adjust to his size and angle.
”That’s it Mo Gradh.” He whispers in my ear as I bury my head in the crook of his neck. “Good girl.”
Garrick’s hands grip my hips and push me up, my hands tightening on his arms again as he does so before his hips raise to meet mine, my head rolling back. Each thrust hitting just the right spot. Something Garrick had become very good at finding over the last few months. I place my hands on Garrick’s shoulders, using them as leverage as I take over from Garrick’s thrusts. He leans back on the chair, hooded eyes watching as I bounce up and down on him. His hands tightening on my hips whenever I roll my his against his. One of his hands traces along my hip to where we meet, his fingertips slipping back and forth over the slick and swollen nub. My body instantly responding as I clench around him, my head rolling back. Garrick’s hips raise to meet my thrusts, increasing the feeling building up inside me as we move as one. He must sense I’m close as he picks me up and lays me on the desk, staying sheathed inside me with ease. He hooks my legs over his shoulders as his hands raise my hips.
Oh god.” I moan out as my head thumps against the desk, my hands gripping onto the desk as if my life depends on it.
”No gods here, sweetheart. Just me.” He says with a smirk as he picks up the pace. “But you can worship me if you want. I can be your god.”
I laugh softly at his words, my body trembling as each thrust pushes me closer to the edge. "You're already my everything, Garrick," I whisper, locking my eyes with his as we move in a rhythm that's become as familiar as breathing.
For the second time tonight, I watch something in Garrick snap. Something primal and feral flickering in his eyes. His hips no slamming into me at an ungodly pace that has my eyes rolling back into my head. My fingers digging into the wood of the desk as my release rushes through me, I vaguely register the sound of me screaming Garrick’s name, my name name also falling from his. Garrick scoops me up into his arms, holding me tightly to his chest as he lays us down in his bed. His fingers trailing up and down my back as his beating heart pulls me into a deep sleep.

The Lost Sister - Part 29

The Lost Sister Masterlist | Masterlist
The flight back to Basgiath was long and quiet. Not even Mealladh spoke in my mind as we flew back. I could tell by the look on Xaden’s face as he flew off to my right that something was bothering him. I knew enough to know he was in league with Gryphon riders, but it didn’t mean all of them. Was this a group he knew? Did he know about the attack? Or had he been blindsided? As much as I wanted to reach out in his mind and ask, I felt like he needed the flight back to think things over.
As we descend into the flight field, two figures make their way up from the quadrant. Two figures I instantly recognise as Garrick and Bodhi. Either word of the attack had made it back before us, or Xaden had gotten Sgaeyl to inform their dragons of our arrival back. Judging by their faces and how confused they looked, it was easy to tell they had no idea of the attack and what had happened.
Our squad is quick to make their way out of the flight field after we land. Due to when the attack had happened, we hadn’t gotten any sleep in over a day. We we’re all exhausted and in need of shower, food and bed. Something I had a feeling I would have to wait that little bit longer for as Garrick and Bodhi walk over and join Xaden and I. Bodhi goes to talk but goes silent as Xaden shakes his head and motions for us to follow him out of the flight field. Being so early in the morning and a weekend, the quadrant is empty. No one else to see Xaden lead us up to the tower where I had approached the three boys about what they we’re hiding from me.
”So you going to explain why you disrupted us trying to go to sleep?” Bodhi complains as he leans up against a pillar, rubbings his eyes.
It was very apparent Bodhi and Garrick had not gotten much sleep, if any judging by the flight leathers they still wore. Probably only just getting back a few hours ago from a supply run they had done while we we’re gone.
”Monsteratt was attacked by Gryphon Riders.” Xaden says bluntly as he leans on the ledge, looking out across the quadrant.
Garrick’s eyes instantly snap to me. I’m ok, we got out before they actually attacked. I tell him as I reach out and place a hand on his arm.
His eyes still flicker over me, assessing for an injuries. But after a few seconds he relaxes and nods, content that we had actually made it out without getting involved. His hand reaching out and grabbing mine, pulling me into him as he leans up against the pillar between Bodhi and Xaden.
”I’m going to assume by these two being in flight leathers and your facial expressions on the way back you aren’t invovled with the group that attacked?” I ask Xaden,
His eyes snap to mine. “No we aren’t. And what facial expressions?”
”You get this look when you’re trying to figure something out or somethings bothering you.” I tell him with a shrug.
”I do not.” Xaden’s eyebrows furrowing.
I feel Garrick shake with laughter behind me. “I hate to tell you, but she’s right. You do.”
Xaden narrows his eyes at his best friend before shaking his head and looking back out over the quadrant.
”No one was missing from you’re supply run meet up?” Xaden asks, his question directed at Garrick and Bodhi.
”No, everyone was there.” Garrick informs him.
Bodhi nods his head in agreement. “And before you ask, no they didn’t seem on edge or like something was up. I doubt they had anything to do with this.”
Xaden hums and nods in agreement. But despite the information he’s still tense and on edge. As if he doesn’t fully believe what Bodhi and Garrick have told him.
“So which Gryphon riders are you guys involved with?” I ask them.
Bodhi and Garrick laugh, while Xaden stiffens at my words.
“What’s so funny?” I ask, looking between them all.
“Do you remember Xaden’s betrothed?” Bodhi asks, a smirk on his face.
“Ex-betrothed.” Xaden says gruffly as he narrows his eyes at our cousin.
I roll my eyes at Xaden before nodding at Bodhi.
“We’re in league with her sister Syrena’s drift. It’s not overly big but she’s slowly gathering more drifts and fliers to be on our side when the time comes.” Garrick finishes off, the smirk in his tone evident.
I can’t help but laugh. I hadn’t had much to do with Catriona when I was younger, we hadn’t really gotten along. Something about her never sat quite right with me. As I hadn’t been introduced as Xaden’s sister to her at first, she had been jealous and rude towards me. Saw me as a threat to her future engagement with Xaden. Upon Xaden finally snapping and telling her who I was, she had become embarrassed and even more angry towards me. Garrick had found the situation hilarious. I remember his booming laugh echoing around the room as Xaden had told her who I was.
“I’m assuming by ex-betrothed you called off the engagement? I’m sure she was so pleased with that.” I muse, Xaden’s face hardening at my words as Garrick and Bodhi snicker.
Xaden looks up and meets my eyes, finally laughing and shaking his head. “No she was not. She definitely had some choice words to give me.”
“I can imagine. Can’t wait to see what she says when she finds out about Violet.” I tease.
“What do you mean finds out about Violet?” Xaden’s eyes narrowing at me.
“Well you’ve got mated dragons. Both tied together for the rest of your lives. Cat is going to love that. She’s going to have it out for Violet once she finds out, because I can already tell by your confusion that you haven’t told her. And I think we all remember how she treated me before she knew I was your sister.” I state.
Xaden purses his lips as he slowly nods his head. “Hasn’t exactly come up in conversation and I’d like to keep it that way.”
I walk over and pat Xaden on the shoulder. “I’ll be sure to say some nice words at your funeral.” I tease before walking back down the stairs of the tower for a much needed shower and sleep as Bodhi and Garrick burst into laughter as Xaden grumbles at them.

As the middle of May arrives, so does War Games. Meaning we are fast approaching graduation. Something I had tried to avoid thinking about too much. But it was fast approaching. Meaning Garrick and Xaden leaving was fast approaching. This year was going so fast. It felt like only yesterday I was crossing that parapet and being shoved in front of the stairs in the rotunda. Being reunited with my brother and Garrick. And now we had to face the prospect of being separated again for who knows how long. And with our line of work, there was also the reality we may never see each other again. I shake my head to clear the thoughts from my head. I needed a clear head today. Today was War Games. If I went into this distracted, there was a very real chance I could be killed. It wasn’t uncommon for riders to die during war games. None of us were safe.
”What do you think our assignment is going to be?” Liam asks as we stand in formation in the middle of the courtyard with the rest of Fourth Wing. “Deigh thinks we’re on offense. He won’t stop going on about getting to kick Gleann’s ass-” Pausing as his dragon clearly butts in to say something. “Guess dragons hold grudges.” He whispers.
We certainly do. Mealladh adds, causing me to chuckle.
Anyone in particular you want to get revenge on? I tease.
Mealladh chuckles. No, not yet at least. Though Cath might be tempting to teach her rider to pull his head in.
We might have to get in line for that one.
Ahead of us leadership are gathered, getting their assignments from Xaden. He had know about the task since yesterday and he used his spare time to plan who was going where.
”We’re definitely on offense,” Rhiannon answers, “Otherwise we’d already be in the field.”
I nod in agreeance. “I don’t think I’ve seen a single rider from First Wing since lunch.”
Which did not bode well for us. Out of all the wings, First Wing liked us the least. Mainly Jack Barlowe and his squad. He wasn’t going to forget that Violet had put him in hospital for four days after their challenge a few weeks back. Meaning she would be the most likely target if our squads crossed paths.
”I think you two might be right.” Violet adds as she fidgets with the collar of her uniform. It was a particularly warm day, and we we’re fast approaching summer. I suddenly envied the other quadrants who had far better uniform options than the black leather we wore. “Why do you think riders wear black anyway?”
”Because it’s badass,” Ridoc states from behind us.
”So it’s harder to see if we bleed,” Imogen adds.
”Forget I asked.” Violet mumbles as she turns her attention back to the front.
Any hints as to whats to come? I ask to Garrick who startles slightly as I speak in his mind.
I’m never going to get use to that. He replies as his eyes flicker up to meet mine.
You love it. But you didn’t answer my question.
You’re getting nothing out of me sweetheart. He tells me bluntly as he turns his attention back to the squad leaders in front of him.
Nothing? I can’t tempt you anything? I tease.
I watch as his shoulders tense and his nostrils flair. No
No? Not even me getting down on my knees, my mou-
Stop it! His eyes meeting mine again, desire and need heavily evident in them.
Make me. I tease before severing the connection as the leadership meeting ends, Dain and Cianna heading back to us.
”Which is it?” Heaton asks. “Offense of defense?”
”Both.” Dain states as he stops in front of us. “First Wing has taken a defensive position in one of the practice fort in the mountains, and they’re guarding a crystal egg.”
The older riders in our squad murmur with excitement. Obviously this challenge is far more exciting than ones in the past they have encountered.
”What are we missing?” Ridoc asks as he looks around at the older riders. “Because you guys seem thrilled about an egg.”
”From past years, we know that eggs are worth more points,” Cianna states as she grins enthusiastically. “Flags have statistically been the lowest, and captured professors rank somewhere in the middle.”
As exciting as it would be to try get an actual human out, if it was Carr I would leave him there as long as possible just to make him squirm and suffer.
”But they like to switch it up,” Dain adds. “The same way we could be going for a real objective on the line only to discover its not as valuable as we thought.”
”So how is this both offense and defense? If they have the egg, then clearly we should go get the egg.” Rhiannon adds.
Dain’s excitement peaks with Rhiannons question. “Because we’ve also been given a flag to defend and no outpost to do it in.” He grins widely.
”And we’re carrying it.” I state as a grin of my own spreads on my face.
Dain looks over at me and nods, his grin faltering slightly as our eyes meet. He still wasn’t sure of me, and I don’t blame him. But right now we had to be on the same page.
”And who is going to carry this flag?” Imogen asks.
I don’t know how but Dain manages to smile even wider. “That is going to be the fun part.”
Immediately we jump into formulating a plan. Dain drilling into us the strategy he wants us to follow. It seems Dain had taken something away from out time in Monsteratt with Mira. But our plan was simple and easy to follow. Anything too complicated would have us too focused on trying to remember what to do. All we had to do was play to our individual strengths and pass that flag often, never giving First Wing a chance to spot who was carrying it. An almost perfect chance for me to try use my signet. But could I cast a believable illusion while moving and on a large group of people? That was going to be my test. With two whole wings out there it would be a massive test to see if I could. But if I messed it up, part of my signet would be known to the entire quadrant. Something I did not want.
It’s a risk worth taking. It will not be easy, but if we focus I have no doubt you can pull this off. Mealladh states as I meet her eyes as we walk into the flight field.
One way to find out then. I state back as I smile at her.
”We’re going to win.” Rhiannon states confidently as she puts her arms around Violet and I.
”What makes you so sure?” Violet asks nervously.
”We have you two, Tairn, Mealladh, Riorson and Sgaeyl. And obviously me.” She grins. “There is no way we’re losing this.”
”You are certainly-” Violet’s words die as Tairn comes into full view.
He’s standing proud and tall at the front of the section next to Mealladh. Dain’s dragon Cath pushed easily to the side to accommodate them. A glint on Tairn’s chest catches me eye. A buckle. On Tairn’s back is a saddle. A saddle made to help Violet keep her seat. That sneaky bastard.
”That’s…. That’s a saddle.” She stutters out.
”That’s cool, that’s what that is.” I tell her.
”Yeah, and it looks way more comfortable than Feirge’s bony spine, I’ll tell you that. See you two up there.” Rhiannon says before pushing past us and heading off to mount her own dragon.
I turn and walk over to Mealladh, leaving Tairn and Violet be to have whatever conversation they are having.
She’s not going to be happy with you. I tell Xaden who is walking over to Violet.
He meets my gaze and shrugs. It will keep her alive and let Tairn do what he needs to do. She will learn to like it.
I shake my head at him. Fucking mated dragons.
He gives me a vulgar gesture before walking past me to Violet who still looks shocked at the saddle that now adorns Tairn. I have to give it to my brother, he had thought of anything and everything to keep that girl alive. And honestly this was the best one I had seen yet. Hell I kind of wanted one, but I had not problems keeping my seat and I doubt Mealladh would tolerate it.
You would be correct. But if it kept you alive I would do my best to tolerate it. She states as I run up and mount her.
That might be one of the nicest things you’ve said to me.
I don’t have to look at her to see she’s rolled her eyes at me. As I settle in my seat I look forward to see Garrick mounted on Chradh looking over at me. I can tell from here how excited he is about this War Games. It would be challenging to do offense and defence, but we could pull it off. I feel his presence reaching out for me, clearly wanting to communicate before we take off.
You’re going to use your signet aren’t you?
Of course I am. It’s going to give us the upper hand with that flag. I tell him sternly. I was not backing down on not using my signet. I needed to learn to use it in real life situations.
I see him nod his head slightly. I know there’s no point in telling you Riorson’s not to do something, but please be careful with it. We can’t have everyone knowing what you can do.
If it means winning, I’ll do whatever it takes. And I know you will to.
I don’t doubt that. You just keep that flag safe sweetheart, and I’ll make sure Xaden or I get that egg.
How about this. You make sure you get that egg and you might just get a reward tonight. I tease, knowing he will do anything and everything to make sure he gets that egg.
A reward? What kind of reward? He practically growls in my head.
Get that egg and you’ll find out.
And with that Mealladh and I launch into the air, leaving a very shocked and dumbfounded Garrick down below.

I’m thankful Garrick had gone full mother hen all those months ago, meaning I had flight leathers here to change into instead of my dress uniform. Though I know Garrick would not have minded seeing me in that again tonight. Garrick who had gone to let Xaden know what was going on. Something I did not want to go do with the lighting we had seen while pulling on our flight leathers as fast as we could. And with how close it was I knew they we’re next door to us right now. Thank god for silencing wards.
I slip into the hallway full of riders. Everyone rushing everywhere. A mix of flight leathers and dress uniforms rushing down to the rotunda. A familiar hand grasps mine and I look up to see Garrick looking down at me, a tight lipped smile on his face. We both knew the chances for him getting sent out to defend against the attack were high. And with graduation not far away, this could cut out last few days together extremely short. With a quick kiss to the top of my head, Garrick heads off towards the rest of leadership forming at the top of the Dais while I join the rest of my squad. As I step into place next to Imogen I notice the smirk on her face.
”What are you smirking at? We’re being attacked.” I ask Imogen.
She chuckles and shakes her head. “Oh I know. But I see your plan worked. Better than expected as well.” She teases as she takes in my appearance. Which I’m sure is slightly dishevelled.
I can’t help but smirk back despite the situation. “The out come was definitely better than expected.”
Movement catches my eye as Ridoc and Violet slot into formation. Violet who is clad in a jacket that is far too big for her.
”Looks like I’m not the only one.” I say to Imogen, nodding my head towards Violet.
Imogen follows my gaze and chuckles. “Good to see they sorted out whatever was going on.”
”I wouldn’t go that far just yet.” I joke earning a proper laugh from her causing the others to look at us.
Rhiannon jogs up to us, taking her place between Violet and I. Her head whipping back as she takes in Violets appearance.
”Violet Sorrengail, are you wearing Riorson’s flight jacket?” She whispers, trying to keep her voice low.
I muffle a laugh as Liam’s head snaps towards Violet, clearly hearing Rhi’s comment. Violet looks over to me for help, probably hoping to say it was mine. But with those three stars and a wing leader emblem on them, there was no hope at passing it for mine. Also the fact it was freaking huge on her, and despite being taller, I was nowhere near as tall or big as Xaden. Nice try Violet.
”Why would you say that?” She mumbles as she fiddles with the jacket before shoving her hands into the pockets.
”Oh I don’t know. Because it’s huge on you.” Rhi points out as she pulls at the leather.
”Also three stars on the collar.” I point out, joining in on the chaos that was forming.
”It could be any third-year’s.” She says while shrugging. A miserable attempt at trying to throw us off.
”And with a Fourth Wing emblem on the shoulder?” Rhi cocks her eyebrow at Violet. She was not fooling any of us.
I watch as Violet swallows nervously. “That does limit it a bit.”
”Oh and don’t forget the wingleader emblem beneath those stars.” I point out as I smile cheekily at Violet whose glaring daggers at Rhi and I.
”Fine, its his.” She whispers quickly as movement on the dais catches our attention.
Up front Commandant Panchek takes the dais, followed by Colonel Aetos and the wingleaders. Despite how calm and collected Xaden looks, I can tell he is pissed. Something about this situation feels off. I reach out with my mind, all four wingleaders are annoyed and irritated. While Panchek and Aetos seem quite proud of what ever is about to happen. Too calm for us to be under attack.
”I knew it!” Rhi whispers excitedly. “Tell me it’s good.”
”I do not need to hear about you fucking my brother!” I exclaim, Rhi waving me off dismissively.
”I broke his window.” She winces as her cheeks start to flush.
”Like…. you threw something at it?” Rhi’s brow furrowing as she tries to figure out why or how Violet broke a window. I already know how. Her signet.
”No. As in, lighting struck…. A lot, and I shattered his window.” She mutters before looking towards where he stands on the dais. “And look, there he is now, all calm, cool, and collected.”
”A word of advice Violet.” I say as she looks over at me. “Get use to it. He’s always been like that, even as a kid.”
She almost looks annoyed at my statement, but she must realise I’m right as she briefly nods before turning her gaze back to Xaden who is staring right at her.
But not for long as his gaze shifts to mine. His eyes going wide momentarily as his gaze trails over my hair. Taking in the now black strands. The corner of his mouth curves up in a slight smile as he nods approvingly before tearing his gaze from mine. I had hoped he’d see the hair under different circumstances, but this would have to do.
”Damn, I wish someone made me shatter windows.” Rhi says with a grin as she looks over at Xaden.
”Oh please, you’ve had way more-”
Rhi and I go to react at the same time as Dain approaches our squad, and close enough to see whose jacket Violet was wearing. Rhi being closer quickly leans into Violet and draping her arm around Violet so her hand hides Xaden’s insignia and rank from him. “Good morning, huh?”
I have to stop myself from cringing at her choice in words. I prayed Dain was as tired as the rest of us were and put her weird behaviour down to being drunk or over tired. And by the look he gives her I know that’s exactly what he’s thinking. Her behaviour distracting him from Violet easily.
”Not really, no.” He states dismissively as he scans us. “I know its early… or late, depending on your night, but we’ve spent all year training for this, so wake the hell up.”
As he turns to face Panchek I see Violet and Rhi sag in relief out of the corner of my eye. Thank god. If this had been any other day Dain would have be concerned about their behaviour.
”Riders Quadrant!” Panchek’s shout echoing around the rotunda. “Welcome to the last event of this year’s War Games.”
A murmur rips through the formation. My signet picking up on relief and annoyance mixed through the crowd at his words. He’d clearly interrupted a few riders plans this evening.
”The alert that was sounded is similar to what it would have been if this was a real-life attack. To see how fast you could muster, and we will continue this exercise as if it is. Were the borders to be simultaneously attacked, and the wards faltering, you would all be called into service to reinforce the wings. Colonel Aetos, would you do us the honour of reading the scenario?”
The Colonel steps forward, in a way so similar to me that I know I’ve seen Dain do it before. It was almost eerie how similar he acted to his dad.
”The moment we’ve dreaded has arrived. The wards we’ve dedicated our lives to upholding are falling, and there has been an unprecedented, multilevel attack along our borders, putting villages under siege from drifts of gryphon riders. Mass casualties among civilians and infantry are already being reported, as are the deaths of multiple riders.”
I had to give it to him. He was laying on the dramatics pretty thick for this. If they hadn’t revealed this was War Games it would almost be believable.
”As we would if you were a battle-ready force, we are sending your wings in every direction.” His eyes scanning across the four wings assembled before him, before landing on fourth wing. “Fourth Wing to the south east. Each squad will pick which outpost they will reinforce within that region. Choices are first come, first served. Wingleaders, however, will be assigned to theirs for the purposes of determining a headquarters for this exercise.”
Something is off. Something is wrong about this. Colonel Aetos’s eyes scan over the wings before turning to Xaden. My heart drops as their eyes meet and the way the Colonel smiles at him.
”Riorson, you’ll establish your headquarters for Fourth Wing at Athebyne.”
I barely register the rest of his words. Other than Xaden is the only windleader told where to go. And to a place I know he’s been with helping the rebellion. Athebyne. Xaden’s face remains calm. But I feel the way his fear rises to the surface as I reach out to him. The Colonel knew. And with the way his eyes locked onto Dain before moving to Xaden’s I knew it was because of him. As I look to Dain his face reveals nothing. But I note how scared he is as well. Definitely behind Xaden being sent to Athebyne. I feel something nudge my hand and I look over to see Imogen look at me. We both know what’s just happened. They’ve found us out. They’re sending Xaden beyond the wards to hopefully die. And if that’s his head quarters that means…. I snap my gaze to the front of our section to see Garrick already looking at me.
They know don’t they? I ask even though I know the answer, but needing confirmation of my thoughts.
Garrick slowly nods. Yeah. They know.
You’ll be going with him. Won’t you?
Where he goes I go.
I go to object, but Dain is already giving us orders.
”We’re going to claim the outpost at Eltuval, the northermost one in our assigned region,” He informs us as he turns to face us all as Rhi drapes her arm over Violet again.
It’s then I notice the fear in Violet’s eyes. Something she shouldn’t be feeling. She shouldn’t know about Athebyne. But she does. The look in her eyes tell me she does. Xaden told her. Xaden and Garrick we’re going to kill me for doing this, but I had to know. And if Xaden had trusted her to know, then he trusted her with my signet.
You know about Athebyne don’t you?
To her credit she barely flinches as I speak in her mind, her eyes snapping to mine.
Yes. How… Is this your signet?
Only a small part of it. When did he tell you?
Her brow furrows as she recalls the memory. The night I killed Jack.
Swear to me you told no one. Because if you have anythin-
I didn’t tell anyone. I swear. I promised I wouldn’t.
Good.
I retract from her mind as formation breaks, everyone rushing to be flight ready and on the field in thirty minutes. A very rushed thirty minutes at that. Thanks to my stuff being split between mine and Garrick’s room. But despite rushing between the two, I don’t run into him. Probably just missing him due to going to my room first. Also missing my squad who have already left when I make it back to the first year floor. Leaving me to make the walk to the flight field on my own. Which I honestly needed despite how much I wanted to see Garrick, and even Xaden before they left. I knew they could handle anything thrown their way, but something about the way the Colonel had smiled and the look in his eye told me there was something at play here. And there was nothing we could do to stop it from happening.
As I walk into the flight field I can’t help but be in awe at the sight before me. Every single dragon in the quadrant is in the flight field, assembled in the exact formation we keep in the rotunda. The only exceptions being Tairn and Mealladh who stand either side of Cath, as if reminding him he’s not the most powerful dragon in the squad. What surprises me though is the small golden dragon at Tairn’s feet. Andarna. I’d barely seen her since Violet had bonded her, due to being too small to keep up with the bigger dragons just yet.
As I fall into spot next to Violet, Dain begins his probably well planned out speech. “Second Squad! Prepare for a four hour first leg of our flight. We’ll need to keep a tight formation for the first fifteen minutes as the squads disperse.” Something behind Violet and I catches his eye as he looks past us. “Wingleader?”
Violet and I turn eerily in sync to see Xaden striding towards our squad, Garrick a few steps behind.. A look of determination on both their faces. They aren’t here to say goodbye. Xaden has something planned, and I know it’s about to involve us and annoy Dain. But it wasn’t hard to do the latter.
”How can I help you?” Dain snaps out, straightening his shoulders and adjusting his stance to try appear bigger and taller next to those two.
Xaden ignores him as he turns to Violet and I. “I need you two.”
”I’m sorry?” Dain retorts, stepping forward.
”Relax, he just wants to say goodbye.” Violet explains, but the flicker of amusement in Xaden’s eyes tells me all I need to know. We’re going with him.
”If you’re saying goodbye, it’s to him.” He corrects her as he nods towards Dain. “I’m constructing my headquarters squad and you two are coming with me. So are Liam and Imogen.”
Despite not reaching for any emotions, Dain’s anger flairs at the edge of my mind. “The fuck you are. Violet’s a first year and Athebyne is beyond the wards.”
Xaden just blinks at him as Garrick steps forward. “I don’t hear you giving me the same argument about Mairi and Riorson.”
”Liam is the one of the best cadets among the first years, even with him assigning him guard duty over Violet.” Dain argues back at Garrick, crossing his arms across his chest as if trying to imitate Garrick’s stance
”And Sorrengail wields lightning. And Ophelia can do a lot more than you know.” Xaden counters, causing Dain to look over at me. Dain who still has no idea what I can do, but looks surprised Xaden knows. Idiot. Why wouldn’t my brother know. “And not that I owe you an explanation, second year, because I don’t, but Sgaeyl and Tairn can’t be separated for longer than a few days-”
”That you know of!” Dain exclaims as he cuts Xaden off. “Or can you honestly tell me Sgaeyl was at her wit’s end when you showed up at Monsterrat? You’ve never fully tested how long they can be apart.”
”Feel like asking her yourself?” Xaden challenges, arching a brow.
I can’t help but chuckle as Sgaeyl stalks forward, head low with a menacing gleam in her eyes. Blue Dragons were not to be messed with. But especially not Sgaeyl.
”Don’t do this. Riders are known to die during War Games and she’s safer with me. Anything could happen once we’re away from Basgiath, let alone you taking her beyond the wards.” Dain pleads.
I don’t miss the way he emphasises ‘Anything’. He knows what were about to go up and face. A sentence only meant for only for Xaden.
”I’m not dignifying that with a response. This is an order..”
Dain narrows his eyes at Xaden, his anger hitting me like a tidal wave. “Or has this been your plan all along? To separate her from her squad so you can use her to get your need for revenge on her mother?”
”Dain! You know that’s not going to happen” She says while shaking her head at him.
”Do I?” He snaps back at her. “He’s made a big deal out of the whole if-she-dies-I-die thing, but do you know it for a fact? Do you know Tairn won’t survive your death? Or has it all been a ploy to earn your trust, Violet?”
Violet sucks in a sharp breath as he words definitely hit a nerve. She goes to retort, but I quickly step between them, standing toe to toe with Dain.
”Pick your next words wisely Aetos. Or you might not have any more to say.” I warn him, the ground shaking as Mealladh stalks forward like Sgaeyl did, positioning herself behind Dain. I don’t miss how Cath almost cowers away now Sgaeyl and Mealladh are involved.
”Please, do quit while you’re behind, Aetos,” Xaden seethes behind me. “You want the truth? She’s a fuck of a lot safer with me beyond the wards than she is with you within them. We both know it.”
I turn to see Xaden looking at Dain with a look I had seen in our fathers eyes many times before. He would do whatever it took to dispose of whatever stands between them and what they want. And right now Dain is what stands in his way. The only reason he hasn’t is because of Violet. Their friendship might be strained right now, but he still means something to her.
”Stop.” Violet states as she steps forward, putting her hand on Xaden’s arm. “Xaden, stop. If you want me to go with you, I’ll go. It’s that simple.”
As his eyes shift to Violet they immediately soften. He was wrapped around her finger. I knew because Garrick gave me the same look.
”No fucking way.” Dain whispers, in disbelief as to what is happening. Also not missing the look in Xaden’s eyes as he looks at Violet.
As Violet drops her hand from his arm I know she’s realised he’s made the same connection. “Dain….”
”Him?” Dain’s eyes widening as they dart between Violet and Xaden. “You and…. him?” He shakes his head as if trying to wake himself up from a bad dream. “People talk, and I thought that’s all it was, but you….”
I go to step up to Dain again but Garrick grips my shoulder, pulling me back towards him. He clearly knows I’m about two seconds away from punching Dain in the face.
”Don’t go, Violet. Please. He’s going to get you killed.”
”I know you think Xaden has ulterior motives, but I trust him. He’s had every opportunity and has never hurt me. At some point you have to let this go.”
We all stand in silence as she steps towards Dain, both just looking at each other. Despite how much I dislike Dain and how he’s acted towards me, I can’t help but feel sorry at the hurt I see in his eyes before he quickly masks it. “If he’s what you choose…. Then I guess that has to be enough for me, doesn’t it?
She nods. “Yes.”
He quickly leans in to whisper something before pivoting on his heel and walking towards Cath who is still cowering.
”That could have gone worse.” Garrick mutters behind me.
”It could have also gone a lot better.” I retort as he snickers at my remark.
”Get ready. We have a long ride ahead.” He tells me, placing a brief kiss to the top of my head before turning on his heel and following after Xaden.
”I made the right decision. Right?” Violet asks as she watches Xaden walk away from her, not even glancing at Dain.
I smile at her and nod which seems to ease her nerves about what just happened. “He might be my brother, but regardless of that, I think you made the better choice. You need someone who will help you flourish and grow. Dain wouldn’t let that happen.”
”Yeah… you’re right.”

Our mission. Keep the flag away from enemy hands. At first it feels like we’ve been given a punishment. After an hour we’ve encountered no one. Almost as if Xaden is punishing Dain instead of granting him an honour. But I know it’s not. I can sense them nearby. They know we’re here, know we are coming. But neither side know’s where the other is just yet.
Ahead I can see the flag clutched in Dain’s hands as if his life depends on it. He was determined to prove himself here. If he did it would put him in a good spot for wingleader next year. Our squad had handled everything thrown our way this year and come out on top. We wouldn’t let this change that. As Dain banks to the right, Mealladh and I follow Tairn and Violet off to the left. I can’t help but laugh as I watch Violet fully enjoy flying. Her hands trailing above her head as we plummet towards the valley below, the mountain side rushing past us. As we pull out of the dive I can’t help but feel a ripple of something. Power, followed by fear. Violet. That came from Violet. But what was that? But I don’t have time to worry about what that was as I feel it. Feel them. Up on the ridgeline sits a grey tower that is made to blend perfectly into the cliffside. And it nearly does, if it wasn’t for the dragons sitting on top.
Time to go. I tell Mealladh.
She grunts in recognition as we all break away, scattering as I watch three dragons launch from the tower. As the other’s bank of Mealladh and I shoot upwards. It was like the weather was made for us today. The sky cloudy and overcast. Almost the same colour as the underside of Mealladh.
You can do this. Focus little one. Mealladh reassures me.
I nod. I can do this. I shut my eyes and focus, reaching out to the mind’s of the three dragon rider’s that had launched from the tower. I force out the image of not just Dain holding the flag, but all of us. All of us holding the flag. Immediately I feel the heavy wave of confusion. I open my eyes to see them all looking around startled. It had worked. They had all see us pull flags out, clutching them in our grasp.
This is no time to celebrate. More are on the way. She reminds me as more dragons move into position from the other side of the cliff.
I easily push the mental image out to them before they can get eyes on us, and they have the same reaction as the initial three. But it doesn’t stop them from attacking us. Obviously trying to see if we’ve made decoys or duplicated them. Trying to find the real flag which Dain still had clutched in his hands. None of them paying any attention to Mealladh and I as we sore above them. Completely invisible due to Mealladh’s colouring. Which we use to our advantage. Diving at a dragon that tries to take Tairn by surprise as he accelerates towards a sight that has my heart skipping a beat. Liam and Deigh. Locked in a battle with Jack and Baide. I put my faith in Violet and Tairn, opting to focus on the dragon and rider going after them. They’re too focused on them to notice as before it’s too late. Mealladh sinking her claws into the dragon, sending them off in the opposite direction. Not enough to down them, but enough to get them off our backs and out of the battle. My blood runs cold as I hear Violet’s scream ring in my head along with her panic. I whip my head around in time to see Jack push Liam off his sword and Deigh. Liam flailing as he free falls. Mealladh and I are too far away to do anything but watch as Liam falls. Tairn and Violet shoot after him but I’m sure they’re too far away. Liam is sure to hit the ground before they get to him. I can feel the fear radiating from everyone as they watch it happen. But in a blink Tairn has him safely in his claws. Liam is safe and no longer falling to his death on those rocks. A ripple of power is all that is left behind from whatever has happened. But different to the power I felt earlier. It came from Violet but it wasn’t Violet. My eyes catching a glimmer of gold tucked into the side of the cliff. Andarna. Had that power come from her?
I shake the thoughts from my mind as more dragons swarm the area, clearly the egg was here. I watch as Dain arrives from the north, another squad launching from the cliff to go after him as he heads straight for me.
He’s going to give you the flag, get ready. Mealladh warns me, obviously communicating with Cath.
We turn and pick up speed, angling ourselves so we can fly above Dain and take the flag from his outstretched hand. I feel Mealladh’s magic hold me in place as she flips us, my stomach dropping as my arms flail as I essentially hang upside down. I wait till we’re almost at Dain and will the flag towards me. Just enough to make sure I don’t drop the flag, but not enough for Dain to feel it. The others oblivious as I make it look like we’ve narrowly avoided a collision with Dain and Cath in their minds as I shoot past them. We bank up and to the right, narrowly avoiding another group from our wing I swear are Xaden and Garrick. But all I see is a blur of black, blue and brown as I shoot past them. And there it is again. The same feeling I got from Violet. But this time it’s all around me. I can feel it in the air as it crackles and swirls around as all. My hands fly to my ears as a large crack of thunder echoes off the cliffs around us as Violet conjures a bolt of lightning that slams right into the Tower where Jack stands with his sword thrust into the air dripping with Liam’s blood. Stone flies everywhere as Jack falls down the mountainside in an avalanche of rock and debris. Baide’s cries mixing with the thunder that still echoes around us, as well as Tairn’s roars of pride.
Violet just got her signet. A signet almost as rare as mine. Lightning wielder.
