"I got you something."

"What?"

You blink at Leanna. Sunlight spills through the narrow window in a bright slash, vivid gold on the white walls, and the metal in your hands is warm. She leans against the door frame, soft and languid and warm in her loose shirt, shoulders exposed. Her eyes are sunrise-bright, flecks of golden dust in the air between you. She smiles at you, white teeth sinking into her lip as she pushes off the doorway and ambles towards you, eyes intent.

"I got you something."

There's a flash of silver in her hand. A fine chain, too pretty to be of any real use. Too pretty for you. You raise an eyebrow at it, at her, as she slides an arm around your shoulder, presses her cheek to your skin. The chain uncoils in her hand, sways sparkling in the light. You blink at it, the gun in your hand momentarily forgotten.

"What's it for?"

Leanna presses her lips to your shoulder, and you can feel her smile. "It's a necklace. You wear it."

"No shit," you mumble. Her hair brushes your cheek, your neck, and you turn your head instinctively to press a kiss to her temple. "Why'd you get it for me?"

"You, uh…" she pauses, uncharacteristically unsure of herself. Her nails press lightly into the back of your neck, scratching gently at your hairline and you tilt your head slightly, encouraging her. "Your tags. You've been carrying them in your pocket since the chain broke, right?"

"Mhm." It's an old tradition, and a habit you haven't quite been able to break; the dog tags are useless since you and Scytha "parted ways", all the data contained on them scrubbed clean, their trackers neutralized, but you can't help feeling naked without them. Leanna drags her thumb down your spine, over the thick knot of scar tissue at the base of your skull.

"Give them here?"

There's still oil staining your hands.

You put down the gun, grimacing at your soot-stained hands, and dig in your pocket. Leanna holds out a hand, carefully threads the chain through the tags. Lets them fall, the silver chain dangling from her fingers as she offers it to you. The sight of your tags - OPERATIVE C17A - tighten something in your throat, your serial number stamped onto the dark, glossy fabric in harsh letters. You press your lips together, let your head tilt until it presses against her temple, her hair soft against your cheek.

"Help me?"

Leanna nods. Doesn't say a word about the strain in your voice, and you could kiss her for that alone. She straightens her head, letting her knuckles brush over your pulse as she draws the chain around your neck. Sun-warmed and light, it settles over your collar like something meant to be there, the tags a familiar weight on your chest. Leanna's hand lingers, her fingertips holding the plastic against you, her palm over your heart. You let your head tip back, resting against her shoulder, and smile as she presses her lips to your temple.

"Thanks."

OPERATIVE C17A, CODENAME VESPER

Operative Vesper is highly adaptable, capable of using a wide range of weaponry in any situation. High survivability and a low rate of mission failure makes him a good choice for most common deployments. Recommended for unpredictable assignments due to adaptability and survivability. Avoid assignments requiring high levels of technical expertise. He shows little concern for collateral damage, and does not feel inclined towards subtlety when approaching missions. Operative displays intense self-preservation instincts, often favouring his own safety over mission success. This behaviour is not unacceptable; however, it should be closely monitored to ensure it does not become problematic in the field. Vesper shows a certain glibness in the field. This is not to be encouraged.
