ASKBOX IS OPEN REQUESTS ARE OPEN HERE ARE THE RULES

okay so requests/askbox is open and this means we gotta go over some ground rules, requests must be:

1) Funny- the request needs to be humorous, memes usually the most popular but dnd in jokes and other shitpostery is welcome. i abide by the MBMBAM NO BUMMERS rule - there are plenty of sad/deep/beautiful calligraphers out there who’d be happy to work with yall, but this isn’t that sort of channel

2) Length - aim for no more than 75 characters a request, my cue cards are only so big so I can only fit so much on each one and still not look like garbage. we can push it a little over but it begins to look shoddier and shoddier with every squeezed letter in

3) Amount of Requests - I am trying to be fair but i am one person running this ENTIRE thing, logistics, tech, etc, everything. In order to be fair, please restrict yourselves to 3 requests per person to let everyone have a shot, if you send in more i will ctrl-f your username and pick my favourites

4) Content - I will not do anything I consider under the umbrella of general assholery - this includes racial slurs, edgelord bullshit, exclusionist jackassery etc. Please be kind to each other. Please let me know if I’ve taken a request that is some incredibly obscure piece of assholery, someone once tried to slip a really obscure antisemetic piece of slang by me once

5) Repeats - I keyword id EVERY SINGLE piece i’ve ever done on this blog, if you think I might have written smth already but aren’t sure, the /search/[keyword] is your friend, check if i’ve done your request before. tumblr changed their search functions to not include tags in the search feature, so we might end up doing duplicates anyway bc of the unsearchability of old posts, its just how it is.

the askbox is theshitpostcalligrapher.tumblr.com/ask , not a dm or submission to the blog. I’ll close submissions too so people don’t get the boxes confused. DM me for any actual clarifications, kind words, etc so they don’t get swallowed up by the behemoth of my askbox for months, and if you want to give me live encouragement the twitch link is right there.

I’ll be streaming the entire time the askbox is open on twitch @ theshitpostcalligrapher, trying to get as many of these done today as possible live. Once 10PM EST hits, the askbox will close but if you get your request into the askbox by then, it will be done eventually as I always have 4 cards up per day.

time for the countdown to the next openaskbox event!

Openaskbox streams are when i get to the bottom of my request inbox, during which the askbox will open for the first time in months and everyone gets a chance to yeet up to three free requests my way. there’s a few rules you gotta follow for your request to be considered, but I’ll post more about that on the day of. 

I will endeavour to write as many requests as I can during the event (which lasts between 6-8 hours) live on stream so people can hang out, chat, ask about calligraphy and the like whilst listening to some tunes. 

When stream time’s up, the askbox will close again and I’ll use the remaining hundreds of unanswered asks to fuel my regular 4 posts/day card posting schedule until the next time we run dry.

the BEST CHANCE of getting it written live today is to send in your requests with 3 different asks within the first hour or so of the stream going live. after the first hour, it's not gonna matter if it's in one or three asks cuz I'll be scheduling them out in advance and everything that follows the rules above will get written eventually

If you want to jump the ENTIRE queue and get your card done immediately, there are ways to donate on the twitch stream to get your request done with an ink of your choice. You can still submit 3 free requests in addition to what you pay for.

How do I request a card?

You can request up to 3 cards for free during openaskbox events! During those, the /ask inbox opens up for a few hours, during which I try to write as many as I can live on twitch and post them on tumblr.

After the event is over and I close that inbox, there are still a BUNCH of leftover requests. This is how I fill the daily content queue, I use those up til it's empty again and then run another openaskbox.

On Sundays at 3pm EST I write all 28 cards due to go up for the week from that pool of leftover asks live on twitch and then queue them to go up after stream

What if I don't wanna wait?

If you'd like to throw a bit of cash around instead of waiting, you can buy via the etsy listing or you can tune in to those^ Saturday livestreams, there's a variety of ways to donate to get cards written for you on the spot

How do I buy the card I've requested?

The etsy listing is available here! Please remember to include in the notes of the purchase which card(s) you want to buy. If you'd like me to bundle together all the cards you've requested over a period of a few years, dm me here on the blog and I can quote you on a cheaper bundle price

Why did you answer all those asks, it messed up my dash?

Sorry about that! So to keep all of that ^ organized, at the end of the month, I answer about 112-140 leftover asks in order to record them to a proper "to-write document"

It helps me keep organized, it allows me to easily search for spelling issues, and it gets a few eyeballs on the request in case someone tries to slip an obscure slur into their request that I'm not cool with writing (it has happened)

Lots of the regulars are used to this dash nonsense, but there are folks who want to avoid it entirely. If you're on mobile I'd just recommend unfollowing for a while, but if you're on desktop, you can blacklist the tag "added to notepad" and go to xkit to tick the "fully hide blocked tags" option so it clears up your dash

Wait I thought requests were closed, why can I still send things?

That's because requests use /ask, but /submit is always open because it's for YOUR calligraphy, pet photos, fanart of man... etc. Requests are NOT open when it's not openaskbox day but feel free to send me cool shit YOU made anytime

Wait you have a twitch, do you do anything other than calligraphy?

I try! my schedule at work (restaurant) varies week to week so I try my best to stream whenever I've got free time to, nothing's really planned out though

What are your regular writing tools and paper?

I mainly just use speedball nibs, specifically the c-series (c-0 through c-4) because they're angled flat nibs that let me do most blackletter hands I write. I have a supply of leonardt thin tips for detailing and illustrating

As for paper, the cards you see on the daily are on plain index cue cards I buy from staples. When commissioned/doing larger pieces, I work with a variety of paper, including a 32 lb xerox paper that has juuuust a perfect amount of lamination that avoids ink feathering, black paper that I bought a hundred sheets of in 2019 and I no longer remember the label, and a BOATLOAD of southworth's ivory parchment paper at both 32 and 64 lb weights.

October Events

Because I am, how you say, somewhat bonkers there is going to be

two major stream events

happening in october within like five days of each other

Event 1: October 15th, 2pm to 10 or 11ish pm EST:

Openaskbox Day

For the Old Hats, y’all know the drill. askbox opens up for a buncha hours and you can submit up to three calligraphy requests per person til the end of the stream. once it ends, I’ll use the leftover requests for all the daily calligraphy cards you see on the blog.

Event Two: October 20th, 4pm to about 10pm EST:

Ghouls, Gaffs, and Games: A Spooktacular Charity Streamathon

I’ll provide more details after the openaskbox stream, but I got contacted by Gamers Outreach, who are one of those organizations that raises funds to provide recreational gaming equipment to childrens hospitals so that kids can have less of a shit time between all the tests n treatments.

The plan is to mainly do A Little Nightmares run with a bunch of donation rewards, the lowest amount being for sound redemptions to give me extra spooks during gameplay. I still need to make it, but there’ll be a poster with all of the donation rewards on it ahead of time.

I’ll also have milestones for putting a bunch of costumes on my irl plushies, dropping everything to carve a pumpkin, bleaching my hair (i’ve been meaning to dye it for a while) and if the ultimate goal is reached the stream goes into intermission for setup because the stream is now a cooking stream and everything gets shifted to the kitchen to bake some spooky cookies

oops sorry folks forgot to open the submissions box up after recording the requests for the month

yep! every single black ink card you see that goes up on the blog is actually a free request, but the reason that you don't see me asking for calligraphy requests is because at the follower volume I'm dealing with, an open inbox gets out of hand within MINUTES of opening

that's why the openaskbox events are a thing!

The information is all in my pinned FAQ but once my inbox is empty, I schedule a countdown to a day called an openaskbox event

on said day, the /ask inbox opens up for a set amount of hours, and hundreds of requests pour in. During those hours I livestream calligraphy, writing as many as I can possibly get done the day-of an posting them. There are some basic ground rules on what'll get accepted as a calligraphy request. After the event is done, I close up that inbox and then slowly work my way through the hundreds of leftover requests until I'm out of things to write, and the whole cycles starts over again

but since 90% of all cards written are free, that's why there's a patreon and a ko-fi for folks who'd like to support the overall hours I put into maintaining the system, as well as the option on etsy to buy the cards you get written
