Queer Book Recs for Speak Your Language Day!

Once a year on Tumblr on May 7th, the account @spyld organizes Speak Your Language Day, a day to encourage people on such an English-centric platform to speak their native languages instead. Duck Prints Press works with creators from over the world, many of whom speak languages other than English as their native tongues (French and German are most common among our folks, but they’re far from the only mother tongues) and so we wanted to join in the celebration for the day by highlighting some of our favorite queer works originally published in languages other than English. Six people contributed to this list (half themselves not native English speakers.). Original language blurbs used when possible!

Where We Go from Here (Você Tem a Vida Inteira) by Lucas Rocha. Original language: Brazilian Portuguese

Guardian (镇魂/Zhen Hun) by priest. Original language: Chinese

Op zijn verjaardag op 3 maart 2020 debuteerde Splinter Chabot met CONFETTIREGEN. Het boek werd al snel omarmd door de boekhandel en media. En daar bleef het niet bij. Sinds de verschijning krijgt Splinter dagelijks reacties op zijn openhartige verhaal over zijn coming-out. Reacties van ouders, van jongeren die met dezelfde worsteling kampen, van ouderen die zichzelf herkennen in het verhaal, van mensen uit de LGBTQ+-gemeenschap, van docenten en nog vele anderen. Tuesday, 12-10-24, 7pm Pacific

'Evenin', everyone...Mr. Baggins back with a set to soothe your achin' nerves and help ease us all into a good night. I thought we'd begin with the music of Chopin, orchestrated by Roy Douglas, and arranged and assembled by him into the ballet known as "Les Sylphides". I can think of no better recording of this to play than Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia's classic 1963 recording.

While we were listening to that, it seemed only logical to follow that up with a little more Ballet music, this time by Tchaikovsky, arranged by the indomitable Leopold Stokowski. We hear "Aurora's Wedding" music, as well as a group of small encore pieces that Stokie always kept handy. Settle in for a great hour!

And yep, Old Stokie was always making transcriptions of famous pieces, just as Horowitz did. Case in point, we are going to hear music from an album he put out in 1961 simply called "Rhapsodies". On there were several old standbys that got worked over in Stokie fashion. My favorites of them being Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor, the one we all know from Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry, as well as Enescu's Roumanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A Major, Op. 11.

And now, let's hear a magnificently authentic Czech recording of a Czech conductor in a performance of a Czech work, with a Czech orchestra, in a Czech Studio (all as pointed out in the excellent notes on this video description). This is The Czech Philharmonic, Conducted by Václav Talich, in a 1953 Urnania LP recording, of Dvorak's Op. 47 Slavonic Dances. He's right...there is something about this version that IS different...there IS a difference in the general energy, the nuance, the way they take the phrase. Magnificent cold-war-era musicianship!

Irishman John Field was trained in Paris and London, but lived most of his life in St. Petersburg. He's credited with inventing that thing which Chopin made sublime, the Nocturne. Here is his Piano Concerto No. 2 in A-flat Major, with Rena Kyriakou soloist, with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Conducted by C. A. Bünte. Recorded in 1968.

Staying with Field for a moment longer, here are his eighteen Nocturnes, played by Irish pianist John O'Connor.

And now let's hear some more from Sir Malcolm Arnold, his Sonatina from 1921, played by "The Three Amigos" : our oboist is the wonderful John Dee, with Shigeru Ishikawa on bass, and Edward Turgeon, piano.

Let's hear these Three Amigos in another recording from the same album, the music of Vaughan Williams, his Three Studies in English Folk Song.

Whenever I get an ask for all of the ops, I’ve always kept those family friendly, so if you don’t mind… Holiday traditions for all the ops! I also want to thank everyone who’s helped me with this and endured my questions and prying, thank you so much @demilitarised-zone, @grain-crain-drain, @cerosin & @aesos-caliber. Any mistakes remain my own, y’all did an awesome job helping me!

FBI

Ash: Eliza Cohen is Jewish, she celebrates Hannukah, not Christmas. She feels a little alone in the endless sea of Christmas decorations, but she’s happy to see everyone around her being cheerful and festive. If anyone actually tells her “Happy Hannukah” instead of “Merry Christmas” she might feel inclined to share one of her sufganiyot with them. 

Thermite: He loves to decorate the place with luminarias (lights or candles in paper bags). He also makes wreaths out of barbed wire. Nobody knows if he’s kidding or not when he says that’s actually a longstanding tradition in Texas.

Pulse: He takes gingerbread houses very seriously, and tries to make them as elaborate as his baking experience allows him. Do NOT mess with Pulse’s gingerbread houses. Ever.

Castle: Tinsel, baubles and lights might look very pretty, but for Castle it doesn’t feel like a true Christmas tree unless it’s decorated with pop-corn threaded on a string too.

SAS

Thatcher: He doesn’t go carol singing, but it’s the only time of the year he’ll go to a church service, and then right to the pub. Also, the Queen’s speech is sacred and a must hear every year, no excuses and no clowning around when her Majesty is on the telly.

Sledge: His favourite celebration is Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve), with the street parties and bonfires and fireworks. Aside from that, every year he burns a yule log, and if he’s argued with someone recently, he’ll burn too a branch of rowan tree, to clean the air and start the New Year with a clean slate. Not that he truly believes it works, but it’s still a nice tradition.

Smoke: If anyone asks him, he’ll say his favorite thing from the Holidays is getting stuffed with good food. However, now that his daughter is a teen, he’ll admit he used to love writing with her a letter to Santa, and then watching her face of wonder when she opened the exact presents she had wished for.

Mute: He only celebrates Christmas because everyone around him does, not because it has any significance to him. But fitting in is easier if you go along with it, and it is a fun festival, even if he’s not the best at gift giving.

GIGN

Montagne: He loves visiting Christmas markets, walking around, buying a new figurine or ornament. He as a sizeable collection of santons, even if most of the time he sets a pretty minimalistic crèche (nativity scene/manger)

Twitch: When she was a kid she used to celebrate St. Nicholas on the 6th of December, since it was an important tradition where she lived. Nowadays, she celebrates by distributing candy to her friends and teammates (and keeping a good portion for herself as well).

Doc: He is a muslim and doesn’t really celebrate Christmas. He appreciates the festive atmosphere, and doesn’t mind the decorations, but he doesn’t decorate his home, nor does he celebrate anything in particular. He’ll gladly make use of the free days to spend time with his family and friends tho, and also give to whatever charities are popular around these dates (which usually are kid related).

Rook: To him Christmas means good food - mostly scarfing down as much foie gras as he can, and having bûche de Noël (yule log cake) for dessert - and good company. He holds a small pre-Christmas team party every year, so he can celebrate with his teammates before he goes to visit and celebrate with his family.

Spetsnaz

Tachanka: Watching “The little blue light” (a variety TV show) right after midnight in New Year’s Eve, both him and his sister have been watching that literally all their lives. He used to dress up as Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) for his kids and nephews, but they’re too old for that nowadays.

Kapkan: After New Year’s, he’ll always go on a lone hunt for a few days and come back with fresh meat right in time to celebrate the Old New Year (on January 12th).

Glaz: After the celebration of the New Year and being in contact with more people than he usually handles, and drinking a lot more than it’s advisable, he’ll spend the next day  nursing a hangover and painting, isolated from the rest of the world. 

Fuze: He would say the home cooked food from his mother and grandma is the highlight of the Holidays, since he doesn’t care much for celebrating when they all feel his missing’s brother’s absence so keenly still.

GSG9

Jäger: He adores Christmas and still buys advent calendars for himself every year. He also inevitably forgets to open several days in a row and eventually binge eats all the sweets when he remembers. He hides it tho, because he doesn’t want people to think he’s childish.

Bandit: In contrast to Jäger, Bandit doesn’t care one whit about the Holidays. He’s of the opinion that the only good thing about Christmas season is Glühwein. Although, if he’s with his family, he will accompany his nephews on Epiphany day to go singing carols and get sweets.

Blitz: He will always organise a secret Santa event at the base before everyone scatters around for the holidays. Loves Christmas markets and the very American traditions of wearing tacky Christmas sweaters.

IQ: She likes to bake Christmas sweets, but dislikes her teammates hounding her for cookies. Aside from that, she’s pretty minimal in decorations and showing the Christmas cheer. Although she has an Aventskranz (advent wreath) and burns one candle every Sunday leading up to Christmas.

Buck: It’s not Christmas without Tourtiere (a traditional meat pie) and Buck is quite an expert in making those, the results are even better than the one his mother makes much to her frustration.

Frost: Moose Milk, a highly alcoholic beverage that’s a tradition in the Canadian Armed Forces. Frost is the undisputed champion of both preparing the Moose Milk and drinking more cups than anyone else.

SEAL

Valkyrie: For her Christmas is not complete without gifting (and in turn receiving) Poinsettia flowers, and eating tamales. And while a Christmas tree is a must, she still keeps with her family’s tradition of putting up a nacimiento (nativity scene), even if it’s much more minimalistic than the one her mother does.

Blackbeard: He participates in a Jingle bells 5k run, dressed as Santa. He likes dressing as Santa. Aside from that, he’s very particular about going to personally choose a tree, then set it and decorate it on his own.

BOPE

Capitao: What he misses the most is watching the kids have fun with  the Christmas play of “Os Pastores” (The Shepherds), he barely goes home nowadays, and there are no more children in the family for now either.

Caveira: She wishes for a proper amigo secreto (aka, secret Santa), where you give (and receive) small gifts all through December using an alias and some sneaking around, and then having to guess the identity of your secret Santa on Christmas’ day. 

SAT

Hibana: She sticks to the notion of Christmas being a time to spread happiness, and also a romantic time. She’ll give people small gifts, go admire the Christmas lights, and eat outside. If it can be a romantic dinner with her partner, even better.

Echo: To him Christmas means pretty lights, eating KFC and cake. And visiting Tokyo Disneyland if he’s in Japan during those days.

GEO

Jackal: He never celebrated Christmas much, he never saw the point in it when he doesn’t have a family to celebrate with. But he always liked all the traditions around New Year’s Eve to bring in good luck: eating the 12 grapes (one for each strike of the clock at midnight), wearing red underwear, dropping a golden ring on your champagne glass for your first toast at midnight; and most importantly, right after the clock strikes the end of the year, hugging the people gathered around you. It always gave him a feeling of comfort, as if he was part of a family.

Mira: Two words, Christmas lottery. She finds a way to buy some from Spain every single year, and then faithfully tune in on the 22nd of December to hear the kids from San Ildefonso’s schoolchanting the drawn numbers and prizes. It doesn’t feel like Christmas is about to start without that.

SDU

Ying: Christmas is synonymous with party, especially since it’s impossible to escape the Winterfest in Hong Kong. Who doesn’t like to party?

Lesion: He likes sending Christmas postcards, by traditional mail yes. And he’d be even happier to receive some as well. Aside from that, he doesn’t really celebrate Christmas.

GROM

Zofia: She likes to have a traditional Christmas, especially when it comes to Christmas’ Eve dinner. Even if most years she can’t really buy a live carp to kill herself as her dad did, she still has carp fillet on the menu. Always puts an extra place on the table, as it’s the tradition, but also because she hopes one day Ela will take up her offer to come.

Ela: The true Christmas tradition for her is avoiding her family, although Zofia keeps inviting her to spend either Christmas’ Eve or Christmas Day with them and meet her niece.

Vigil: He prefers to spend the holidays either alone with his parents or with very few people around, he’s not comfortable with those big gatherings and parties everyone seems so fond of. And ice-cream cake from Baskin Robbins is a must. 

Dokkaebi: She still doesn’t get why so many westerners think that money is not an appropriate gift. It’s better than receiving something that one doesn’t like, right? All her Christmas decoration depict Granpa Santa with blue robes, and she will always argue blue is the right color, not red.

CBRN

Lion: He always attends midnight mass on the night of Christmas’ Eve. He used to hate it when he was a kid going with his parents, but now he finds it calming and comforting.

Finka: She misses celebrating Kalyady, which mixes the pagan celebration of the winter solstice with the celebration of Christmas and New Year. Caroling is so much fun when you also dress up with masks of animals or fantastical beasts.

GIS

Maestro: Christmas means family gatherings for him, and home baked Panettone, and carol singing and visiting the Christmas Markets. Will invite to his table anyone who mentions not having plans for the holidays, since nothing seems worse to him than being alone on Christmas.

Alibi: While her family doesn’t celebrate Christmas, she sometimes will celebrate it with friends if she doesn’t have those days free to go home to visit her family. The thing she likes the most is decorating. Proper, tasteful decorating, not those kitsch nightmares so many people seem so fond of! 

GSUTR

Clash: She loves Boxing Day as much or even more than Christmas, cause while family meetings can sometimes be a little tense, she’s always felt at ease with her friends; and especially after joining Rainbow, she’s dying to celebrate with them.

Maverick: It’s been years since he last celebrated Christmas, between being deployed and then, well, imprisoned for a time. He remembers he used to go watch “The Nutcracker” almost every year, and build snowmen Santas, but it seems like that was a lifetime ago.

GIGR

Kaid: Doesn’t celebrate Christmas and he’s not very fond of the over-the-top decorations that pop up everywhere. He’s a bit grumpy about it, especially since doing good deeds for the community sounds like what the holidays should be about. He actually likes that bit.

Nomad: She doesn’t celebrate Christmas either, but doesn’t mind participating in the festivities. She’s travelled all over the world and observed the local traditions when she was there, this is no different.

SASR

Mozzie: He will sing the carol “Six White Boomers” 8about how Santa’s reindeers are replaced by kangaroos since the heat is too much for them) until everyone is either sick of it or knows the lyrics by heart or both. And also, beach barbecues!

Gridlock: For her Christmas means summer and going to the beach and Santa in a surfboard. The idea of a white Christmas is very aesthetically pleasing, but in reality she hates it and can’t wait to go back to a place where Christmas means beach parties.

USS

Warden: He has to have some fruitcake (mostly nuts, some other dried fruits, and spices) soaked in bourbon. It’s a true delicacy, trust him, he’s a man of refined tastes, right?

JGK

Nokk: The tradition she likes the best is, before opening any presents, lighting up the tree (with real candles instead of lights if possible) and walk around it while singing carols. She and her mother used to sing and twirl around the tree as fast as possible, until they were almost dizzy and laughing.

APCA

Amaru: She will make dark hot chocolate with cinnamon and cloves for everyone. The fireworks at midnight on Christmas’ Eve are a must, as is gathering at home with her family and closest friends.

FES

Goyo: It’s not Christmas without ponche and rompope (more or less equivalents to punch and eggnogg, and alcoholic). He also likes to eat pozole, although his is never quite as good as the one his mom cooked for him. (And no, tía Azucena, he’s too old for a Posadas party, stop bringing piñatas!)

NIGHTHAVEN

Kali: She doesn’t celebrate that, and doesn’t really give any special free days to her men either. Lucrative opportunities for work don’t stop just because it’s Christmas or New Year, quite the contrary she would say.

Wamai: He doesn’t care much about celebrating Christmas or not. My Dragon Con 2019 photos pt. 2

Descriptions below (L-R, T-B)

Anne Lister and her thermometer. I saw the thermometer bopping through the crowd and thought ‘wait I know that’. I’m gonna go ahead and admit I haven’t seen Gentleman Jack YET, but I knew my flist would get a kick out of this so I grabbed the photo.

Good Janet and Bad Janet from The Good Place. There were actually a bunch of Janets at the con this year, but I caught these two posing for a photo for someone else and jumped in to grab one too. The TGP panel I went to was very good as well.

Annie Lennox and Vyvyan Basterd from The Young Ones. So con etiquette (and common human courtesy) involves asking before you take someone’s photo. Cons are very loud and very crowded, and also people aren’t necessarily used to responding to a character’s name as “oh they mean me”. So what I do is try to get their attention by calling the name, catching their eye, etc, and holding up my phone as a question. This gives the cosplayer the opportunity to say no for whatever reason, and lets them pose how they want. A good pose is important, and a lot of cosplayers, myself included, practice how they will pose if asked for a photo. I absolutely work on what facial expressions I’ll use, what stance makes the costume look best, where to a hold a prop so both it and your face are visible, etc. So, all that being said, I made my way across the lobby towards this couple and held up my phone to communicate “Photo?”, and the guy dressed as Vyvyan Basterd stepped to the side so I could get clear photo of Annie Lennox, and he looked surprised/pleased when I said “Oh no, I want both of you, you look great.”

“Burt Reynolds” and “Sean Connery” from the SNL Jeopardy sketches. Another show I don’t watch, but cultural osmosis being what it is, I am familiar with these characters, have seen a couple of these bits, and could quote some of it. So yeah, I laughed and asked for a photo.

Lucy Ricardo from the I Love Lucy chocolate factory episode. This was so damn clever. Like, insane screen accuracy, huge builds, intricate builds, puns, mashups, large coordinated groups, there are lots of ways a cosplay can make you go “Cool!”, and this was a 'I have never seen this before' cool, which is one of my favorite kinds. My friend who had never been to D*C before, but is a con veteran, said “So the theme for cosplays at Dragon Con seems to be ‘yes’.” And that’s exactly it. If you can call yourself a fan of anything, and can figure out how to cosplay that, Dragon Con is the place to do it, because at least one other person is gonna recognize what you’re doing and say “Cool!”.

The witch and Sir Bedevere from Monty Python and The Holy Grail. I’ve seen a couple King Arthur and Patsy duos, including one this year, but I hadn’t ever actually seen this before, which I thought was damn clever. Also, you could totally tell where they were in the lobby by the sheer number of quotes from that scene being yelled out.

Damian from Mean Girls. This was another cosplay that I caught in passing out of the corner of my eye that made me bust out laughing. He wasn’t doing it on purpose, but he was kinda photobombing a lot of photos by just wandering around the lobby with that sign, which made some of them incredibly funny. I told him “Four for you” and thanked him for the pic.

Romy & Michele. I appreciate the ability of a good prop to sell a cosplay, especially when it involves wearing off the rack clothes. So yes, having their name written on Post-Its and carrying Post-Its around was super clever, but I totally recognized them before I even got close enough to read what they said.

The pink shorts-wearing boom op from behind the scenes of Star Wars IV: A New Hope. Again with the ‘I’ve never seen that’ cool, and the ‘if you can think of it someone will recognize it’ cool. There was a huge Star Wars meetup photoshoot that my friends and I went to in our JediPuff Girls cosplay, and this guy showed up and I think nearly everyone knew exactly what he was doing. Fully awesome.

The Three Amigos. Great accuracy, totally recognized them, but I took this photo and kept looking at the guy on the left, thinking “Jesus he looks familiar. I know I’ve seen him before. Another con? SCA? Friend of a friend? WTF?” Then I posted the photo to Facebook and my friend was like “Oh yeah, he’s got a funny YouTube channel” and I smacked myself because yeah, I’ve seen him in the video about picking out the necklace for a your new grandma name and a few others. Dammit! Missed opportunity.

Who were you named after? I was named after a random name in the credits of a movie. Mom saw the name Demi and liked the sund of it, but thought it was too manly. So they made it Demy. Turns out that that’s actually a guys’ name, and it had been misspelled so many times, but at least it is unique. 

Last time you cried? A few weeks ago in the car on my way home from work. I got the text that an instructor that meant a lot to me during my training for diving instructor had passed away after a short battle with Corona. I heard it at work, but the realization really hit me when I had a moment for myself in my car. 

Do you like your handwriting? No. I never got past cursive and I can only read it myself when I remember the context. Short reminders for myself don’t work when I don’t remember what it is for. 

What is your favourite lunch meat? It’s either pain d’ardenne or bacon. 

Longest relationship? I’ve had one relationship, and it lasted three years and a couple of months. We broke up about a year ago, on good terms, and we are still good friends. 

Do you still have your tonsils? Yes

Do you bungee jump? I have never had, but I would be kinda down for it. 

What is your favourite kind of cereal? Probably just oatmeal with honey, if that’s a cereal. I don’t really eat cereal, they are kinda to sweet to be breakfast in my opinion. 

Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? I do it with all my tied shoes except All Stars, because they are easy to take off that way. 

Do you think you’re strong willed? No, I think I am not. I am insecure, easily discouraged and easily go with someone elses plan. I keep getting better on standing my ground and I am proud of my progress, but I’m still working on it. 

Favourite ice cream? Vanilla, but we also have something called ‘boerenroomijs’ (“farmer’s ice cream”) and it’s like a better version of vanilla. 

What is the first thing you notice about a person? Usually whether they are easygoing or not, and if they like to ask questions or like to talk about themselves. 

Football or baseball? Neither tbh. 

Favourite donut? The ones with no filling, and glazed. 

What are you listening to? I have my daily mix on spotify. Today it has songs from Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Halsey, Sam Smith, james Arthur and t.A.T.u., amongst others. 

If you were a crayon, what colour would you be? I wanna say navy blue because that’s my favorite color. 

What is your favourite smell? I like the smell of kindle fire. 

Who was the last person you talked to on the phone? My mom asking her to take apples for apple pie from doing groceries

Hair colour? Brown, currently with a coup soleil. 

Eye colour? Blue

Favourite food to eat? I really like spareribs. Whenever I’m somewhere eating out and I don’t know what to pick I pick spareribs. I also really like risotto and salmon. 

Scary movies or happy endings? really depends. There are good and bad in both. 

Last movie you watched in theatres? I got a small heart attackbecause I though it was Cats, but luckily it is Birds of Prey. 

What colour shirt are you wearing? I’m currenty wearing my beige colored pj (it’s 11AM currently and i just woke up)

Favourite holiday? Holiday as in a day to celebrate? In that case I kinda like King’s Day (birthday of the current Dutch head of Royalty) because the entire country celebrates with you, and I kind of respect our current king because he is such a casual dude. But that’s just a shot, I really dk my favorite holiday. 

Beer or wine? I get nauseous from wine, and I don’t really like the taste of beer unless some kinds op special beer like fruit beer. In regards to booze, I’d prefer liquors, mix drinks and cocktails. 

Night owl or morning person? Nt really either. I love going to bed early and sleeping in as late as I can. When I’m in my working rythm I do wake up early by myself, but not voluntarily. 

Favourite day of the week? Probs Saturday. 

Favourite animal? As a child, I would say “dolphins”. Right now, I don’t really know, but I like lionfish so I think that's that. 

Do you have a pet? Yesss. My parents have a dog named Duvel, and my sister and I share a pair of cat brothers named Nacho (officially mine, he is my profile pic) and Amigo (my sister’s). We also have a single bunny whose mate died about a month ago. She will be rehomed as soon as the border with Belgium is reopened. 

Where would you love to travel? The next place on my list is Prague. Where else I would like to travel, I’ll see by then. 

My only mutuals are people I know personally, so whoever sees this and wants to join, go ahead!

🎮: Favorite game to play with each other?

Hmm~ normally we play co-op games (say Super Mario 3D World), but every once in a while, R/ichter and I tend to play horror games (for the thrill of it xD)! We’d play ones where it does have Co-Op (think modern R/esident E/vil games), but as a couple that loves poking good-natured fun at each other, we’d challenge each other to see who’s more likely to be scared.

The only time we called it a draw was with The Witch’s House, that’s because of the toy soldier on the fourth floor (that, and some puzzles stumped us lol).

✈️: Where would you two like to travel to?

Oooh, the hubby and I would love to travel to Greece one day! There’s something about its culture and mythologies that interest me greatly.

Flew to Toronto and exhibited at TCAF! It was a monumental financial failure but we had fun and I got to meet one of my cartoonist heroes Colleen Coover. After that I cancelled all my comic events for the rest of the year and focused on DCAF.

Watched Abigail perform Aerial Animation live for the first time since I started collaborating with her on it in 2009.

Nearly broke myself making another Aerial Animation for France’s Got Talent, but really proud of the result.

Damh and I sewed a Batgirl costume for Pollito and sewed 4 stockings for Christmas. Most sewing I’ve done since maybe 2000. Felt pretty good.

Roughed 50-ish pages of my graphic novel. Well short of where I wanted to be, but it averages one page a week for the year. At least it didn’t stop entirely.

Experienced my worst mental health in maybe a decade. Trying to keep up with dire political news in America and the UK, combined with going full time with the kids, talking to very few adult humans and having almost no time to myself since July. Felt very similar to breakdowns I had in 1992, 1998 and 2005.

What’s to come in 2018

Doing less. I’m not sure what means yet. But I’m overwhelmed at the moment. Will probably say no to any offers that come along. I think 2018 will be a lot about giving up. When I try to do anything beyond parenting, I end up being a bad parent. So I just need to parent and do my best to let the rest go.

Going to try teaching that VFX class again, but the last time I did it I had the help of two grandparents and Damhnait was on maternity leave. Not sure if it’s possible without that support structure.

More graphic novel roughs, I want to start posting them on Patreon.

4 more DCAF events, assuming we can recover from the loss of the Dublin Food Co-op in Newmarket Square.

Make and print a mini-comic, since I failed to do so in 2017.

Try to submit to some kind of grant, either Creators 4 Creators or one of Ireland’s many art grants.

Toy Fighter (Anchor Inc., 1999) - 3D fighter of toy pitted against toy that could’ve easily been a DC hit. it’s wacky, has an incredible upbeat techno soundtrack (and some goofy ‘toy room music’ between matches) and you get ‘dirtys’ for pulling off specials or hitting an opponent before the match begins. not sure if that’s encouraged or not but it sure is fun.

Asian Dynamite / Dynamite Deka EX (Sega of China, 2006) - no one saw it coming (and I didn’t see anything about it until I was downloading Naomi roms last spring), but Sega of China released a spiritual successor to Dynamite Deka 2 which is basically a reskin of all the enemies and stages and shuffled around with a full blown Asian aesthetic. instead of pirates and punks, you’re pitted against old guys at an onsen, otaku, maid cafe girls with shotguns and more. 

Slashout (Sega Software R&D Dept. 4, 2000) - once again would’ve been a piece of cake to bring to Dreamcast. the 3rd installment to the 3D beat em up Spikeout series but set in a fantasy realm not that much different than Golden Axe. the colors and character designs are dat vivid Naomi goodness and plays like a co-op Power Stone game, which speaking of...

my top 3 Naomi games that made it to the DC would be Power Stone which I played all the time fresh at the arcades around my turf, CRAZZZZZYYY Taxi which anytime I got dragged to see a movie with my fam I’d just leave the theater to go to the lobby to play it more and lastly Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 because it was the first time I saw a fighter with 2D sprites with 3D backgrounds so I was just in awe (not my favorite DC fighter though). I never got to play Samba De Amigo or Cannon Spike in the arcade but I love those too. I’ll answer your other question on another post!

Good Stuff: Blisstina Utonium {PPG2k16}

WARNING: Anybody should be able to be a Powerpuff Girl. Apologies for the delay...Thank you, take care out there, and enjoy.

Narrative 101, me amigos. When it comes to giving a new character the limelight, few things to know is that the origin should be easy to follow, the character should get some EARNED value in the show’s universe, and coincidences shouldn’t be the things that help or hurt them.

And we’re talking about a toy hype train crash, ladies and gentlemen

And I hate to say this, but “Blisstina” (Blisstina?) is the exact opposite of what I just said. Her origin was so full of holes and continuity errors, it felt like a driveby literally gunned down logic on the streets. Her value amounted to making sure the Professor was less of an ass to her and saving the day with the trio, nobody really learning anything about what the extent of her powers or how she wants to change or be different from before. And everything that happens to her was generally out of nowhere, like everything else this special offered (Mojo’s appearance was especially stuffed in there; offered no real reason to include him at all). This special not only felt lazily made but insulting to those with actual varied intrigue in seeing this character thrive. In short, it’s...

But what did we all expect here?

Like Gizmodo pointed out, Bliss (Bliss?) deserves better than being a mulatto powerpuff girl whose essentially an unstable timebomb, an unnecessarily powerful fanfic OC, and an undeservedly mistreated character that probably won’t be back again. However, I felt curious, I wanted this reboot to actually do better after giving me PTS with its horror of a first season, but even my monstrously low expectations were met with a flaccid taste in my mouth and I felt a step below disappointed. How are you able to do that? No clue. So you know what? I’ll be positive on this. Hear me out on this:

The Good Stuff™ Guide to a better “Power of Four”

*Side note: The hair needed to go. It looked like a banana leaf fundipped in meth glitter. They should’ve change the color to brown or white (complimentary to the black, blonde, and red heads of the trio) or shorten the length of it to make it less distracting. I mean, teal hair can work in cartoons, people.

You gotta respect your character designs. It’s 2017!!

Now to be fair, they had some good(?) ideas when it came to helping Bliss be a character. Olivia Olson played a great older powerpuff girl, her story amounted to a fish out of water story (which can work), however the reboot knows not of how to “growth”. They say they wanted to develop these girls, they wanted to “expand the family”, but you should know that after a year, they haven’t come up with jack diggedy fucking squat. So with execution, they just make jokes at how the trio is handling her OP-ness and whatever miscellaneous shit that just appears to move things along; never giving her a real edge to becoming a character that we want to see. So with all this, I’ll put it this way. What if, instead of the story they had, Bliss was actually:

A next gen powerpuff girl, made by an enthusiastic chemical scientist that admires the Powerpuff Girls and wanted to create one themselves. They decided to “accidentally add” Chemical W to give the girl that possible oomph above the girls in power. Bliss is born, with better hair and is still overpowered, and she trains to control her powers with her creator. Years pass, the creator has grown passive of dealing with her and becomes negligent and somewhat abusive in making sure Bliss stacks up with the trio. Then one night, Bliss sees the Powerpuff Trio on the TV and is awestruck at the thought of having sisters since she’s honestly alone. So she jets off to Townsville, finds the girls, and wants to prove her worth in being just as great a hero as them. The girls agree, but Bliss’s instability starts to affect her control of emotions, causing her to become more hardcore, in tune to the spirit her creator once had for her. Later on, fighting Him or whatever, Bliss sees this and feels ashamed of herself. However, the girls comfort her, asserting that while her attitude and powers can be a handful, she shouldn’t think she can’t be a powerpuff girl with them. So they defeat Him or whatever, and Bliss feels that she can’t stay there because she isn’t family, and while the girls beg her to stay, Bliss wants to travel the world in search of seeking control and be a powerpuff girl that the world can count on.

Now that’s simple, but here’s a more unoriginal-original approach. What if Bliss was:

The Professor’s original powerpuff daughter (her creation same as beforehand), but her reunion equals to her being a mature teen that has controlled her powers and is considered an international hero. Bliss forgives the Professor for his inability to find her (after secretly searching for her all that time; not wanting to tell the girls she probably died), and she and the girls mutually consider each other as a part of the family. However, when they decide to fight crime together, the episodes reveal her to be a mercenary; only willing to be a hero when the money is right. The girls see this and try to convince her to think otherwise, with little avail, and yet never discard her because she’s still saving the day. Then when Him or whatever gets the better of the trio, Bliss helps saves them and they defeat Him or whatever together. And in the end, she doesn’t believe in quitting her code of work, but still believes in helping her sisters no matter what, free of charge. Then she leaves for elsewhere, not wanting to mooch off of the trio’s turf, and keeps their heroic code in mind.

And here’s one more, and this is considerably my favorite concept. What if:

The Powerpuff Trio create Bliss like they did with Bunny. Except now, she’s the weakest of the four. She can’t lift well and is shy to the bone around everybody. The Girls know Bliss can’t be a powerful superhero like them, so they try to see how she can still help them, again to little avail. However, dramatic irony; we find out that she’s very spontaneous and tactical. So when they fight Him or whatever, and the girls are getting crunched, she summons the strength to come with a plan to help the girls and indirectly attack Him or whatever almost simultaneously (JJBA Part 2 style). It’s successful, the trio defeat Him or whatever and celebrate Bliss’s aid out there. Bliss feels better about herself, but decides to not want to be a superhero and instead become a person that helps reconstruct the buildings and shit (an engineer?) YES, that’s it. So Bliss gets accepted to an engineering school away from town and promises to come back and help the girls and Townsville while remaining in the sidelines, never forcing her out of her comfort zone but alleviating her nerves to go about her confidence feel like a Powerpuff Girl in her own way.

When I get down to it, these concepts could still dote the fact that while Bliss didn’t/couldn’t consider herself family or a powerpuff girl, the girls help affirm her positions, give her comfort for a future ahead, as well as give us a character we’d want to see, root for, and protect. This reboot can be a shit mop all it wants, but I won’t stand seeing them squander ideas that were good and were what people might have wanted from this show. And while I know season 3 doesn’t sound like it’s happening now that this flopped, I wanna close this out with one request to @cartoonnetwork. Hope ya’ll listen...

Bring back the original PPG for Boomerang, continue giving Olivia Olson kudos for doing great voice work, and broadcast your other shows more on your TV network while getting your streaming app together.

What your favorite pokemon opening says about you

The first: you're nostalgic for simpler times and days and are a sucker for singing in groups. Bonus: if you still jam out to the movie remix, you are probably the coolest among your friend group.

Pokemon World: refined tastes. Underrated, really captures the 90's aesthetic, you SCREAMED when Charizard finally became friends with Ash and 2000 is probably your favorite movie. The movie remix was your jam as a kid and sometimes you can slip it in for a night with the friends.

Johto: you like bops. You do the "do do do do do dooo" thing alongside the singers and ain't ashamed. The movie version is such a relaxed, feel good version that you feel like a kid again and melt off about 15 years of stress off of you. Everyone loves this one, even if they didn't hear of it.

Johto League Challenges: YOU. I like you. You have a lot of good taste. You get goose bumps at the initial guitar riff and basically know the song by heart. This would be your theme song if pokemon championships were like wrestling irl. The movie version, OH THE MOVIE VERSION.

Master Quest: there wasn't an official movie remix but that's okay considering THIS IS QUALITY. You're probably super into the games and probably REALLY love guitar solos.

Advanced: You were robbed of a full version but by God do you know that one minute of awesome by heart. You like new things! You love fresh starts!

Advanced battle: Destiny Deoxys is your favorite movie and nobody can change that. You sing this song in the shower when you remember it and probably REALLY like Grovyle.

Advanced Battle: listen, there was something really special about this era in terms of music and this one was really good. You jam out to the full version whenever it comes on in Lucario and the Mystery of New. Unironically, you thought Lucario was Mewthree or a legendary before they revealed its name.

Battle Frontier: you really know these lyrics very well and Phanpy or Aipom are probably your favs. You're still miffed Pidgeot and Butterfree didn't make guest appearances.

Diamond and Pearl: you're a rare guy my amigo. You really love drums and more hardcore rock. Turtwig is your favorite starter.

The second and third DP op's: lumping these together because you love going on musical journeys, don't you? They cranked it from a soft 6 to a real 12 with these, didn't they? The Darkrai movie is your fav and you would punch Paul for mistreating Chimchar

X and Y 1: your previous fav was the first. You unironically jam out super duper hard to this. You liked the reboot movie too.

The others besides the last: you ship Ash and Serena, eh? It's cool dude. You also really like Clemont and a good adventure. (To be honest I don't remember these). You also unironically love Alan and wish we got more mega episodes with him.

XYZ: WE WERE ROBBED! No pokemon Z, Greninja lost to Charizard, GOD DAMN MAN! You unironically screamed and thought just this once the boy might win. The had goose bumps for every fight. You sincerely thought we'd be going Digimon Frontier in gen 7. You also really dig the hype af music, it really makes you feel good. You really like We Will Rock You by Queen.

Alola 1: haven't watched the series much but I've heard these: you really like musical numbers, dontcha? You love goofy stuff and spastic characters, and really like Sun and Moon's anime.

Alola 2: you love Destiny's child and miss music from the 2000's. You're chilled tf out amigo.

Alola 3: you love tropical aesthetics and really want to go to Hawaii. The Lion King is probably your favorite Disney movie

i have a soft spot for shinee’s debut!era in japan because that was around the time i first became a fan of the group, and sherlock because it the first korean comeback i was around for. otherwise: amigo, juliette, the era with story. op 1 and his book release (+ the agit), she is and 1and1 (for the chokers). 

my favorite songs of his are: “elevator”, “monodrama”, “neon”, “hallelujah”, “skeleton flower”, “02:34″, “aurora”, “cocktail” and “suit up”. 

I RECOMMEND STORY OP. 1. get to listening to it before story op. 2 comes out - also all his recent blue night releases (that’re likely gonna be on the aforementioned), and his songs from monthly live connection.

Problematic Movies of the 80s | Bachelor Party (1984)

Warm up time is over. The movies of my ascension and my going through them was all starting to lead here. No more gloves. Time to get my hands dirty in the potential muck of the truly problematic films. Yes — Fast Times, Class, The Three Amigos all had some edgy areas to look at askew but these were and are not the films we think of when the 2018 word of the day problematic comes up.

Part of the point of these essays/reviews is to look under the hood of the engine that drives men my age (including guys like Brett Kavanaugh) and see what we saw in our most formative years. Journey and Blue Oyster Cult and MTV. What we consume, entertainment-wise, has to have some influence on how we walk through life. I’ve stretched the muscles with some of my favorites from days gone by but the point is to squat down in the weeds and like the opening sequence of Blue Velvet, dive underneath the cheery facade and see the creepy crawlies under the carpet of green.

So, here we go.

I don’t recall much of Bachelor Party. I remember my buddies and I thought it was hysterical and that Tawny Kitaen (the girlfriend of David Coverdale of Whitesnake as well as the eye candy for several of their videos) was in it. Going in to the first viewing of the film since I was seventeen-years old was a bit like seeing it the first time except that I now have an image of star Tom Hanks as America’s Dad so it’s a bit like peeking behind a beloved actor’s early life and seeing the seedier side of things.

Is it possible that I was indelibly stupid as a teenager? It must be possible (indeed, probable) if I found anything remotely funny about this film. I mean, in rewatching it, I had to pause the movie five times just to get up and remind myself to keep watching. 

SIDENOTE:

During my five years as a member of ComedySportz Chicago (1993 - 1998) I found that the kind of broad, dumb humor that was most embraced by the audience could be reduced to me getting up onstage, wild-eyed and with my hair teased up into what could best be described as “Heat Miser Aesthete,” lifting my shirt, smacking my belly and screaming. The audience laughed hysterically and my time with that group was defined by it. I slowly began to hate the audience for it.

At a certain point, I became so bitter about how stupid our comedic output was and how willingly our drunk audience lapped it up like dogs eating vomit in a corner, that I had to leave. No one likes an angry comic judging them from the stage and trying to inject politics or social theories on a stage meant for the humor of five-year olds.

Rick (Tom Hanks) is an impossibly smug young man who announces to his arrested moron friends that he is getting married to Debbie (Tawny Kitaen.) After first reacting as if he has announced his decision to cut his penis off, they decide that it is the perfect opportunity to have a bachelor party with drugs, booze, and hookers. Rick tells Debbie about it and she makes him promise to not have sex with a hooker. He does and then we get to see that this paragon of responsibility is hated by her father (who is an uptight businessman who vastly prefers Cole (Robert Prescott), Debbie’s former boyfriend. Dad and Cole decide to sabotage the engagement.

That’s the first half of the movie.

The second half is the ever expanding party, located in a suite of a premium hotel. A suicidal drug addicted friend comes into town to join them. The nerdy friend is charged with getting hookers for the party. Adrian Zmed brings a 16 millimeter porno that is terribly disappointing. Cole tries to buy Debbie back, offers his Porsche, then decides to kill Rick with a crossbow.

The hookers are intercepted and sent to the bridal shower so the bride decides to first take the shower to a male strip club and then dress as hookers and go to the bachelor party. They are mistaken for real hookers and get locked in a room with a bunch of horny Asian men. They escape (leaving her sister to be gang banged by the Asian men) and Debbie goes to the party, Rick pretends she is a real hooker, she alls off the wedding, he convinces her that he didn’t have sex with a hooker, her father is blackmailed with a bunch of real hookers, the cops come. Cole kidnaps Debbie, Rick saves her and they get married.

Beyond the problematic elements coming up, I found the humor to be forced. Even Hanks is trying too hard to be smarmy and cute. This is like watching a bedroom farce written by thirteen-year old boys whose idea of sex is a dog pile on top of girls. They even introduce a mule for a bestiality bit (the mule eats the addict’s line of pills and cocaine, dies and they haul it off into the elevator) that is so benign that the stripper who is supposed to have sex with the creature merely dances around it.

PROBLEMATIC MOMENTS/THEMES

There are two black characters and one Indian character in this drek. The black actors get the dignity of playing a prostitute and a pimp and the Indian actor gets to be…another pimp. Couldn’t Rick have one black friend? Couldn’t Debbie have one? Just for shits and giggles?

Gary: Are you the pimp?

Rajah: Yes.

Gary: You look like Gandhi!

Rajah: I've got girls to sit on your face.

Oh, there’s also the seven or eight Asian businessmen who chase the fake hookers around their hotel room after preventing them from leaving who end up gang banging the sister. Phenomenal representation.

We also get treated to a comedic bit of anti-trans or homophobia (the prostitute is either a cross dresser or a pre-op transgender woman) as well.

Gary: [after being arrested and handcuffed to the she/male he slept with earlier] NO, NOT HER, SHE PEES STANDING UP, NOT HER!"

From start to finish women exist in the film as opportunities to show their tits (a lot) or be the object of seventh grade lust. There is no other reason for women to exist in this movie. 

O'Neill: I wish I had someone I could really respect. Hey, look at the cans on that bimbo! 

Rudy: Let's have a bachelor party with chicks and guns and fire trucks and hookers and drugs and booze! 

Gary: Yeah! Yeah yeah! All the things that make life worth living for!"

Cole Whittier: Rick, I want Debbie. You dump her and I'll give you cash. Ten thousand dollars, plus a G.E. toaster over; a Litton microwave; a Cuisinart; Michelin tires, brand new; a set of Sears' best metric tools... 

DID IT HOLD UP?

Nope. Not at all.

I don’t get the sense that the filmmakers were in this thing to make any sort of big societal statement. This was supposed to just be in good fun and it feels harmless in that way. I’m not outraged by the cardboard cut-out representations of minorities and women because the main characters themselves are made of paper mâché as well.

My biggest problem with Bachelor Party is that it isn’t funny. Which may make me more than problematic myself because I suppose, if it were genuinely funny, I’d have less of a problem with a movie that is nothing but a series of broad stereotypes and lots and lots of boob shots.

OVERALL

Scale of 1 to 10 1 = Classic 10 = Burn all VHS copies of it
