Sweater
for @throneofglassmicrofics prompt: "sweater," Elide x Lorcan
word count: 623
warnings: minor swearing
oopsies, it definitely isn't March yet, but this basically wrote itself while i was TRYING to read stuff for my capstone. so...enjoy!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Li, where's my socks?" Lorcan's yell echoed down the hallway.
Elide rolled her eyes as she pulled on her short boots. "In the dryer where your laundry still is, babe!"
"Dammit!" With a bout of muffled cursing and a series of thumps and grunts--her boyfriend was many things, but graceful was not one of them--Lorcan jogged down the hall and through the living room, stopping to openly admire his girlfriend's outfit before he ducked into the laundry room.
"You look amazing, shortcake."
"Don't call me that, you giraffe," she laughed, but the complaint was teasing. "Hurry up and get a shirt on, and we can go."
He nodded and went into the laundry room. The dryer door clanged open, he ruffled around for a moment, and there was a moment of quiet before he cracked open the door, scowling.
"Babe?" Elide went over to the laundry room. "Everything okay?"
"Fuck no," Lorcan grumbled.
She raised a brow. "You gonna tell me what's wrong, or are you gonna keep sulking like a kid?"
Slowly--very slowly--he pushed open the door. The scowl etched into his face would have made anyone else pee themself, but Elide knew her grumpy boyfriend too well to be dissuaded. She glanced over at him.
Then she looked for a good long minute, using all of her self-control not to burst out cackling.
"That's 100% wool, isn't it?" she managed to ask.
"Yeah." Lorcan's dark-gray sweater, which Elide loved to steal, clung to his wide shoulders and muscled arms, the fabric stretched nearly to its limit, and stopped just barely past his ribs, exposing the tattoos inked onto his side. "It is."
"Babe...you know you can ask me if you're not sure what to do with your clothes..."
"I didn't want to sound like an idiot," he admitted, his words muffled from him hiding his face in his hands. "And you can laugh, Li. I know you want to."
Elide wrapped her arms around Lorcan's firm, bare stomach and dissolved into laughter, her petite frame shaking against his much larger one. "I was trying not to, but oh my god."
He let loose a dry chuckle. "I know."
"If I had my phone on me, you'd never hear the end of this." She flashed him a wicked little smirk.
"God, no," he groaned. "Aelin is not fuckin' allowed to know about this."
"Don't worry, babe." Elide ran her fingers up her boyfriend's chest. "She won't." She grabbed the hem of Lorcan's horribly shrunken sweater. "C'mon, you still have to change."
Lorcan pulled off the sweater, tossing it to the floor, and pulled a thankfully still normal-sized shirt over his head. "You might as well take it," he said, "it's your size now, shortcake."
"Don't call me that," Elide retorted, her nose crinkling.
"Why not? You're tiny and cute, like a shortcake."
"And you're a big old softie." She winked at him as she reached down, picked up his sweater, and changed into it right in front of him. "It fits perfectly!" she exclaimed, doing a little spin.
"On second thought..." Lorcan's appreciative gaze lingered on the sight of Elide in his clothes.
"Oh no." She shook her finger in his face, trying to be as menacing as possible while pushing aside the way she wanted to climb into that look in his eyes. "We are not putting off this lunch; we haven't seen our whole friend group in months."
"Fine," he grumbled. "Just don't say anything about my sweater, Li."
"I would never," she promised, rising onto her tiptoes and tugging his head down to steal a kiss. "Love you, grouchy."
"Love you too, shortcake." He linked his fingers through hers as they walked out the door. "Especially in my clothes."
heyy mads so actually i need more of your thoughts on amy/laurie and why you don’t understand people defending them…. i remember being kind of baffled by them when i read the book as a young teen so please <3 be a hater <3
hiii laura oh my god i will (gladly) be a hater it comes sooo naturally to me and we all rlly gotta be biting our tongues on here daily, don't we :-/
(pls ... if you are a passionate amy/laurie fan .. just close your eyes and keep scrolling babes i love you sooo much this post cannot hurt you i promise !!!)
OKAY. so i feel like the whole amy/laurie vs jo/laurie debate has been widely discussed (both on The Internet and in my household lol) but for me it's less that i think he should've ended up w jo and more that i think acting like a/l truly love each other and totally definitely make sense is so stupid. it's soooo stupid laura i am rolling my eyes!! can you see me!!!
and the reason i think this! is because, essentially, Alcott uses the four sisters to like ... represent the few limited life paths that were avail to non-wealthy american women in the 19th century, right?
like meg marries the man who is able (if only just) to provide her a stable home. beth pursues her music (piano? if im remembering right) and is content to live her life at home, with her family. amy wants to (and eventually does) marry a wealthy, cultured man of ~Society who can give her a life above the one she was born into.
jo is the wildcard, ofc. the one who goes off-script for the normal young woman, and ofc who alcott views as a reflection of herself. we know that alcott wanted jo to remain unmarried and was strong-armed by publishers to put her w someone, but if she knew she'd have to, then my only explanation for it to not be laurie was to spite the predictable narrative and spite the readers lol.
the guy jo does end up w is so random and just .. makes no sense. if you're making sense of it, you are having to reach so far up your ass to do so! sorry to be crass!!! (rlly leaning into my hater-moment oops)
anyway - the way this connects to amy and laurie is this:
i do not believe (and i'm sure we are not meant to believe) that meg married for love. beth (</3) did not marry ofc. and it's impossible to believe jo married for love if the author intended her to be unmarried. that storyline doesn't exist to me now.
and amy is the sister that is represented as a bit vain; a bit entitled and spoiled in the way youngest children are allowed to be. from the start, it's clear she plans to marry for wealth. even if we're taking from gerwig's adaptation instead of solely the book, then amy still isn't really represented as particularly romantic (the whole 'i'm not a poet' scene) (also tbf it's been awhile since i read the book, but imo she romanticizes her life, yes, but not love itself).
LAURIE is the romantic, the most so, out of all the characters. i genuinely feel like this is the ONLY reason ppl latch onto amy/laurie and try so hard to rationalize it .. bc they can't bear to think of laurie in a marriage that was w his next-best-option rather than True Love (sorry.. by no means a dig at amy...but cmon guys ..)
because i also feel like the only thing laurie really wanted even more than to spend his life w jo, is to be apart of the march family. it was always clear he wanted that, just as it was always clear he loved jo from day 1! and so the only conclusion i was ever able to come from all this is that he loved jo for being jo and he loved amy for being a march sister.
ah god sorry this is SO anysmally long i am SO SO sorry laura dear!! so grateful to you for this opportunity to hate on them (read: cringe & take the romance out of) them as a couple!!! but there is simply no scenario where i can imagine knowing a boy has loved my sister his entire life and then MARRY him after ?? bc she rejected him ??!!! esp knowing amy and jo's history of shared drama. esp bc the entire story is one of sisterhood!
like bro that girl (amy) has mentally been your sister-in-law for a decade ... and now we're saying we LOVE her? puke vom i hate it it makes me cringe and twitchy and yuck. its so weird ppl !!!! so weird.
#omg sooo sorry laura jfc#oh god im so late for something but wow . i feel sooo good rn this was such a nice#sunday activity. coming into your ask box next week to give free ranting reign on whatever ur heart desires <3#answered#laura tag#also this was not a subject for the dreaded capital d Discourse folks if you disagree i full respect that and i will#give you my little sisters number and y’all can chat about how Right and Correct you are and how Dumb and Wrong i am#tbh having opinions is sooo tiring wow. where’s that nick miller quote that’s like ‘damn! how do you guys care about things so much!’#feel both cleansed and like i could go for a nap now!
I was not in any fandom spaces at the time and was really only using HBO Max to watch reruns of The Nanny so it was not on my radar at all.
Then in March my friend texted me and our conversation went as follows:
Friend: Have you watched Our Flag Means Death? We just watched it and I feel it would be up your alley.
Me: I haven't heard of that one but it's an amazing name. What's it about?
Friend: It's about a fancy British (lol oops) gentleman in the 1700s who decides to become a pirate and is kind of terrible at it. It's a comedy - very silly and strangely heartwarming. Also very queer-friendly.
Then I left her on read for a week because I'm the worst and she came back and said:
Friend: Ok, we finished OFMD. Definitely still recommend with the caveat that the season doesn't end on a happy note relationship-wise, but I have hopes for a season 2. By which I mean there better be a season 2 or I'll throw a fit.
Me: Hahahah. Ok this def sounds right up my alley, will be adding to my list.
Friend: Twitter isn't good for much, but I'm glad it told me about this gay pirate show.
Usually when I start new shows I spoil myself silly but this one I went in with literally nothing but what's above. I watched the first few eps and went "huh ok kind of Galavant vibes, I should watch that again when I'm done."
Then we saw Blackbeard's flag and I went "oh shit, Blackbeard's in this?!"
Then there was that whole "killing Stede" thing, and I was like, oh, okay, this is going to be one of those shows where Ed acts like they're friends but is actually going to betray him. Darker than I thought. RIP Stede you were cute, nice knowing you.
Then Jim/Oluwande and Pete/Lucius became items, and since it didn't occur to me at ALL that the LEADS would be gay, I spent most of the series wondering what was going to happen that would cause those cute couples to break up at the end LOL.
Then Ed and Stede kissed and I fell off my couch and I didn't even finish the episode, I went RIGHT back to episode one to rewatch all the way through again with the proper lens.
And that's my pirate journey. And that's why I usually spoil myself because I clearly have trouble seeing what is right in front of my face and need to prepare.
What did you guys know about ofmd before watching it?
I knew it was about pirates and I knew the queers liked and praised it, so I assumed there would be some gay stuff happening. I did not know to what extend
Also i did not know it was a comedy and actually expected it to be a super serious show which is why i put it off for months ✌️
#and TO BE CLEAR it's not like I didn't notice the chemistry between Ed and Stede#it just never occurred to me it would be canon#I though Lucius x Pete and Jim x Olu was the gay quota#so naive#ofmd
here's all the games I beat in 2021 for those curious. I've been making an effort in recent years to get better about actually finishing games, and this appears to be the most games I've beaten in any year since making my Backloggery account. (although like a third of them are Metroid games because I played(/replayed) basically the whole series ahead of Dread lol)
JANUARY
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch)
FEBRUARY
Sackboy: A Big Adventure (people slept on this but it's a solid Mario 3D World-like and the licensed music levels are fun)
Hitman (2016)
MARCH
Streets of Rage 4
Cyber Shadow (I'm glad I stuck with this one because WOW this is a whole different game when you get all the upgrades)
Spark the Electric Jester (had never beaten this despite being a Kickstarter backer and having my name in the credits oops. soundtrack still owns bones)
Alwa's Awakening (100%)
APRIL
Donkey Kong '94
Touhou 8: Imperishable Night (I played several Touhous this year but this is the only one I beat lol. I mean I beat EoSD on easy but I wouldn't count that since it cuts out the last stage)
MAY
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition (FINALLY returned to this after stopping near the end of Act I shortly after it came to Switch. longest game I've ever beaten, and also one of the best RPGs I've ever played)
JUNE
Rivals of Aether
JULY
Metroid: Samus Returns (100%)
Super Metroid (I'd gotten near the end as a teenager but never beaten it, inexplicably)
Metroid Fusion (ditto)
Metroid Zero Mission (I'd beaten this one before though)
Metroid Prime (Wii)
Metroid Prime 2:Echoes (Wii) (the only one of these Metroid games I'd never touched before, but now it's probably my favorite of the Prime trilogy)
AUGUST
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Psychonauts (started several times before but never finished due to lengthy PS2 load times. it's a whole different game without them)
SEPTEMBER
Psychonauts 2 (100%) (probably my GOTY)
Deltarune Ch.2 (the only reason this isn't my GOTY is we don't have the whole game yet)
OCTOBER
Metroid Dread (100%)
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (another one I'd started several times but never finished. I was still in a Metroidvania mood after Dread)
DECEMBER
Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise DLC (I did the main story sequence with the first 30 vacation homes and got the performance with DJ KK, I'd consider that "beating" the DLC)
WarioWare: Get It Together!
Halo Infinite
biggest omission here is Chicory: A Colorful Tale, which I'm pretty far in but I still need to beat. been taking my time with it because while it's absolutely phenomenal and a GOTY contender for me, coloring in all those top-down maps can quickly start to feel like... well, my actual job. which isn't always the most relaxing for me. but it's fantastic
Tuesday 9.21.21
I feel like it's been a week since I got here. I've walked probably 20 miles in the last three days. Let's see where to start.
Sunday morning I went to Costa's for coffee and breakfast, apparently it's a big coffee chain here. Around lunch time, I went to meet a friend K (I will shorten all names for confidentiality) from my cohort on LSE campus. I'd never been on it before!
We immediately left and walked across the bridge to Southwark (pronounced Suthark, apparently). It was drizzling and everything was pretty grey, it felt pretty enchanting in a dreary London kind of way. The whole south bank of the river around there is super built up, it feels like the Yards or the Wharf in DC near where I'm from.
We eventually ended up at Ristorante Olivelli for lunch, we both really felt like having pasta for some reason. It was a cute restaurant. We meandered around Vauxhall and then crossed the river again toward Pimlico, and we walked by Big Ben (I hope my gold production is now increased by 25% [hah, Civ 5 reference]) and Westminster Abbey. Big Ben was mostly blocked by scaffolding. Eventually, I split off and took the train back up to Tufnell Park. For dinner, I ate granola out of a whisky tumbler with a fork, so that's the type of life I'm pursuing now.
On Monday, I went to meet my friend N from the cohort at LSE campus. He had literally just arrived from NYC, and couldn't check into his hotel until later. We walked around LSE campus a bit more, and both bought some LSE clothing/etc at the school store. It's funny, a lot of the buildings are quite modern, but the way they're all tucked in together, it still feels kind of like a medieval street. Lots of cobblestone-ish roads, no real quad like I'm so used to at UChicago or Columbia (though I only spent a couple months at the latter, and I always found that campus to be not terribly welcoming).
I wanted to go to the bookstore Hatchards in Picadilly, which I thought would be a 15 minute walk. Instead, I dragged my friend on a like 40-minute march (keep in mind, this man just got off a red-eye flight to a country five timezones away from home). We made it, and I bought two books that looked related to my dissertation subject.
We were supposed to do a lot of work on that this summer and I did none, because I needed a five month break from that truly exhausting nine-month slog of virtual class and quarantine isolation. Anyway, we chilled at a Caffe Nero nearby for a while, then I left and bought a tennis racket+balls and a basketball at Lillywhites nearby. Yesterday afternoon, I bought some plants. I'll be filling my apartment with as many as possible while I'm here. Pictures soon.
Yesterday evening, I wanted to try this Ethiopiean restaurant Lalibela on Fortress Rd nearby, but I stood outside for like 20 minutes after their supposed opening time of 6, and they never flipped the closed sign to open. I also realized I was slightly under-dressed wearing only a tank top and shorts. So I walked across the street and ordered from Blue Moon Thai instead. While I was waiting, I went over to Sainsburys to buy a few things, and I think the security guard thought I was a suspicious loiterer because he followed me around most of the time I was in there.
I forget what else I did yesterday, but I went to sleep at 10-ish and actually slept through the whole night!! Which is a big deal, because the first night I woke up at 1 am and fell asleep again like an hour later. And then Monday night I woke up at 2ish and proceeded to text one of my friend, L, until like 3:45 am.
This morning, I walked over to Rustique Cafe, on Fortress Rd right near all the other things on Fortress Rd that I talk about. Inside, they have a bunch of bookshelves and all the books are for sale. And you can walk out the back and sit in a wonderful garden they have.
I also saw a cute cat walking around outside my building.
I got a cappuccino (UK cappuccinos always seem to be like 12-16oz, a traditional capp is supposed to be 8 lmao). Also, it has just become apparent to me that tumblr or Firefox spell-check does not recognize cappuccino as a word. It's 2021, boys.
Today, I might my friend K came up to Tufnell park because she was thinking about trying to get a room in my building. We walked to Workman's Cafe (where I went the first day I was here) and got lunch, which was cute. I like the vibe. When we were paying at the counter, I asked the guy if I could tip them and he stared at me for like 10 seconds. Apparently, tipping isn't really a thing here. Also, I'd been wanting to get a picture of the train tracks from the bridge near my apartment for a few days. Got it today. It makes me think of Persona.
We then walked all the way down Fortress Rd, which eventually becomes Kentish Town Road, to Camden. My best description of Camden is that it's basically like the Greenwich Village of London, with some Times Square elements on a couple blocks. Parts of it were really cool, other parts were cheapo London/Britain knick-knacks shops that looked like they belonged in wherever the equivalent of Midtown NYC is in London. We walked by this cool lock on the way.
We went to an anime store!!! that she found called Japan Craft. Manga shelves took up like half the store, and they had some posters, t-shirts, and figurines as well. And for some reason, some Harry Potter merchandise? Anyway, I didn't buy anything, but that's probably the best manga selection I've ever seen short of Kinokuni-ya in NYC, so I want to go back. And somehow, I forgot to take any pictures.
Afterwards, we walked over to this Italian Cafe to get coffee, and instead got a Rosé (K) and Peroni (me). I also had a Portuguese custard pastry. I'm too tired to remember the name of this cafe, but it was cute. We toured another apartment she's looking at near there, then I walked all the way back up to my apartment.
And immediately got changed and got on the tube back down south to LSE campus again, to meet my friend C who flew in yesterday! After a brief tour of LSE campus, I led her too on a long and partly unguided walk through Picadilly and Soho, and we eventually landed at Kissaten bubble tea shop right near Chinatown. I definitely got us lost because I wasn't looking at the map, which she was not thrilled about lol. The bubble tea was good and there were so many super flashily dressed people there. But they only had caffeinated options which is why I'm now up at 12:40 writing this, oops.
We also walked by a pub called Duke of Argyll, which is where the Scottish part of my family is from.
Afterward, we walked through Chinatown, which was absolutely enchanting. My friend C is from Shanghai, and I really like food from places all over China, so we were both excited.
We ended up sitting outside at See Woo, a dim-sum restaurant that had mapo tofu, which I name as my favorite food in the world. That's also one of the first things she and I ever talked about when we were becoming friends. We both want to learn Cantonese and she suggested we take it together.
I took the train up and got home a bit after 9. I continued my multiplayer Terraria game with my stepbrother H for a couple hours, and now I'm here. And I think I might finally be ready to go to sleep.
This isn't to start any discourse and I'm pretty sure this is actually pretty old?? But I thought if anyone I would go to you for info. I've never watched JonTrons stuff and wasn't around when he was on game grumps, but apparently shit went down? I don't necessarily care for him Bc I don't know him but what happened that made so many people stop liking him?? I have honestly no clue
This is a long post oops, ill try to see if i can edit it to include a readmore in the html after i post itBut anywayWelcome to Rems ⭐️✨Discourse Corner⭐️✨(Note: Yall can just google shit? Google is your friend! Dont be afraid of it! This massive, innovative piece of technology is right at your fingertips !! Lmao)Let me preface this by saying thay i *really* liked Jon and his videos; i started watching in late...2015?? Whenever that zoo race episode came out lol. Me and my friends would watch his videos and marathon them together despite all of us living in completely different parts of the country. So i LIKED his content! I really did! And as someone who is somewhat critical of White Men in Comedy (bc alot of them tend to fall back on racist/sexist jokes) I was pretty okay with him. I never watched the Jon era of GG (only some select episodes) but I heard that they (Jon AND Arin) used to be kind of bad. But since the newer episodes of GG (with Dan) were in better tastes, and I had no complaints with Jons videos at the time, i assumed it was just a thing of the past and that they had matured a bit. Anyway, fast forward to the end of 2016 (beginning of 2017? Cant remember) and Jon unleashes Twitter Hell™. Mind u, the Entire time i watched Jon, i never peeped on Reddit (i just dont visit that site) and i NEVER went on twitter(bc i didnt have an account there). So if he ever posted some crazy controversial shit, i was unaware bc i never saw it appear on my dash on tumblr. TL;DR he made some shitty xenophobic remarks regarding refugees in fleeing a wartorn city (Syria i think). And people were like hold the fuck up are u serious?? Some people at Nor//malBoo//ts (PBG in particular) called him out on how backwards and insensitive that mindset was. And i cant remember where his parents are from but his parents are definitely immigrants. So ye, hypocritical. Hes also gone on the record of blasting people who attended the Womens March earlier this year. God i cant remember this shit word for word but it was just him rambling about equal rights but refusing to call himself a feminist bc apparently no one understands the Actual Meaning of feminist. That somehow being a feminist was inherently sexist bc you are prioritizing an entire gender over another???OKAY WAIT HERE I GOOGLED T (like u know....u couldve done lmao)https://www.google.com/amp/www.wetheunicorns.com/news/jon-tron-womens-march-twitter-sexist-jontron/amp/(I dont know how to html this shit on mobile)EVERYTHING IS THERE GO READ IT (and the article itself is also good; whatever they said was exactly what i wouldve said)Basically...he showed his True Colors that day and whoever remains are either people who follow his ideals or people who are just now being introduced to him and have no prior knowledge on him as a person. Hes been MIA for seven (7!) months and alot of us were sure hed scurried away. But no, hes still here, he just made a new video but ill be damned if i watch it and give him views lol
