chapter 12: Soejima Mansion
”Uuh... dark...”
Wa, waaaah~!!! It, it’s heeere~!!!
[YUUJI, offscreen:] "Ugh... It's so dark..."
[YUUJI:] Yaaah!! There it is....!!!
[YUUJI exits]
-----
”Huh? Oh, it’s you...”
You came out of nowhere on this creepy road, I thought
you were a psycho.
[YUUJI, offscreen:] "Huh? Oh, wait, it's just you."
[YUUJI:] You popped up right in front of me on this creepy road.
So I thought you were some psycho.
=====
Anyway, you’re a student at Kisaragi School, right?
In that case, do you know where Shinji Naruse lives?
[YUUJI:] So anyways, you go to Kisaragi High, right?
Would you happen to know where Naruse Shinji-kun's house is?
----
It’s not like he doesn’t know me,
we’re friends, you know.
[YUUJI:] Uh, not that I don't know where it is.
'Cause I'm his friend and all.
----
So, do you know?
Waaaaaaaaaaaah!!!
[YUUJI:] But do you know, though?
[phone rings]
[YUUJI:] GYAAAAAAH!!
-----
Wh- what was that...
...oh, my cellphone.
[YUUJI:] Wh-what the heck...
...Oh. My cell phone.
----
”Hello, this is Yuzi.”
”Huh? No... not at all... I’m not lost...”
[YUUJI, offscreen:] "Hi. Yuuji here.
"Huh? No... Yeah, uh... Not lost at all..."
----
”It’s a nice night, so I was just walking around.”
”So, you’re house is near Soejima Mansion, right?”
[YUUJI:] "It's just such a nice night I thought I'd walk around a little.
"So, Soejima Mansion is right near your house, right...?"
----
”No, I’m not lost. No. Yeah, I’m there.”
”I got it, there it is. OK, I’ll be right there.”
[YUUJI:] "No. Nope. Not lost. Yeah, I'm basically right there.
"Gotcha. Yeah, I knew that. Okay, I'll be right over."
----
Well, I guess I’ll go now.
Shinji the Genius is doing something amazing, I hear.
[YUUJI:] Well, I guess I'll be going.
Shinji-kun the genius is cooking up something amazing.
----
Says if it goes well, the whole world will be amazed.
He’s extraordinary, huh?
[YUUJI:] He says if it works, it's gonna shock the whole world.
He sure is awesome, huh?
----
And I’m kind of helping him out.
He told me to get info from the Net, it’s important.
[YUUJI:] And I'm basically his assistant here.
He gave me a really important job to gather info off the internet.
----
It’s risky to send the data so I bring it by hand.
I’m like his righthand man.
Anyway, I’m busy... I’ll be going now.
[YUUJI:] It's too risky to send it as data, so I'm bringing it myself.
You could call me his right-hand man, I guess.
Well, busy busy... I'm gonna go now.

chapter 12: YUZI
[NOTE: Rare instance of Yuuji being bullied and not deserving it, and also something I've never seen before from Aoi: she occasionally mentions that she comes from a small town in the countryside, and in this one scene she gets startled enough to slip back into country yokel dialect for a couple of lines! Usually she speaks very proper standard Japanese as befits a teacher.]
”Huh? Saijou?”
Yeah, it is you!
[AOI, offscreen:] "Oh? Saijou-kun?"
[AOI:] It is you!
----
What are you doing? Are you shopping or something?
Since I found you, I’ll speak my mind.
[AOI:] What are you doing? Are you out shopping?
Since you found me, I guess I'll come clean.
----
I came here to have a secret personal experience.
There’s a net cafe, right?
[AOI:] I came here to get a little hands-on experience in secret.
There's a net cafe here, right?
----
Honestly, I’ve never set foot in there before.
There’s a rumor that a lot of students come here.
[AOI:] I've actually never been inside one before.
Supposedly the students come by here all the time...
----
It wouldn’t hurt to find out about it, would it?
They say I’m anti-social, so keep this a secret.
[AOI:] There's nothing wrong with learning about it, is there?
This is a secret from the others. They all think I'm so clueless.
----
But you’ve caught me.
I’ve got a strange feeling meeting you on a day off.
[AOI:] You caught me, though.
And it gives me a strange feeling meeting you on a day off.
----
Hehe, kind of like I’m back at school or something.
That’s right...
[AOI:] Hee hee. I feel kind of like I'm back at school.
Oh, that's right...
----
That Net Cafe is that shop, isn’t it?
The strange green building.
[AOI:] The net cafe, is it that shop there?
The strange green building...?
----
>そうです
>違います
>That’s right.
>No, you’re mistaken.
>That's right.
>No, you're mistaken.
====
{OPTION 1: That's right.
Oh? It is here!?
Such an abnormal feeling...
[AOI:] What? Really? Here?!
Oh, my. It looks so... unsettling.
----
I thought this was surely a warehouse...
Do all Net Cafe’s have this kind of feeling?
It’s clearly a design with reards to fire safety.
[AOI:] I was sure it was a warehouse or something.
Do all net cafes have this kind of atmosphere?
It's clearly in violation of the Fire Service Act...
1}
====
{OPTION 2: No, you're mistaken.
That’s probably it.
That terrible design is too suspicious.
To the point that I thought I must’ve been mistaken.
[AOI:] I thought so!
It's such an awful design. So suspicious.
I was sure I must be wrong.
----
However... If so...
Where is that Net Cafe place, then?
The address says it’s here.
[AOI:] But then...
Where on earth is the net cafe?
This is definitely the right address...
2}
======
I’ve been asking you.
[YUUJI "enters"]
[YUUJI:] So, hey, I've been listening here.
----
Woah! Who’re you!?
Don’t jump out so suddenly! You really surprised me!
[AOI:] Gahhh! You! Who're you?!
Don't jump up outta nowhere! You spooked me!
[NOTE: The country dialect is just for these two lines.]
----
Bwahaha... That’s harsh.
I’m Yuzi Okura. The owner of this shop.
You two have been looking at my shop, so I came out.
[YUUJI:] Ahahaha... Boy, that's harsh...
I'm Ookura Yuuji. The owner of this shop.
You two've been staring at my place for a while, so I got interested and came out.
----
Don’t surprise me again!
If you do, I may think you are a Tanuki or something!
[AOI:] My goodness. Don't surprise people like that!
If you appear out of nowhere people will think you're a tanuki!
[NOTE: Tanuki are Japanese "raccoon dogs" with a reputation in folklore for being shapeshifters and tricksters.]
-----
Bwahah... How terrible!
So, are you a customer?
[YUUJI:] Ahaha. Wow. A tanuki... That sucks.
So? Are you a customer?
----
Come on in!
Huh? Go onside?
[YUUJI:] C'mon in!
[AOI:] Excuse me? Come in?
----
!? What?!
Did I say something weird?
[YUUJI:] Huh?! Wh-what?
D-did I say something weird?
-----
Even though I requested it, I don’t feel like entering!
It looks like a snake could come out of this building!
[AOI:] I'm not going in a place like that even if you ask me!
That building looks like a snake or anything could come out of it...
-----
Who would come in here?
Uh, yeah... Who would... Well, I’m a customer...
[AOI:] Who on earth would want to go in there?!
[YUUJI:] I, I... Who...? Well, uh, me... My customers...?
----
Understood! So, you should get back in there!
I don’t feel comfortable.
Well then, pardon me.
[AOI:] I see! Well, you should go inside then!
I have no interest in doing so.
Excuse me.
[AOI exits]
----
... That’s fine. No prob.
I’m pretty tough. Hehe, don’t worry about it.
[YUUJI:] .....Oh well. I'm fine.
I'm real tough. Heh heh. Don't you worry about it.

chapter 11: YUZI
Hey, welcome.
I thought you’d be coming any time now.
[YUUJI:] Hey, welcome.
I’ve been expecting you to show up any minute.
----
Don’t give me that face.
There’s no guesswork going on here.
[YUUJI:] Aha. Don’t make that face.
It’s not exactly guesswork, right?
----
Yeah, that’s right. I wonder if you know.
Probability exists with all developing things.
[YUUJI:] Oh, hey, did you know?
There’s something called “probability” when it comes to everything that happens.
----
It’s a universal rule.
For example, do you think a roll of dice is random?
[YUUJI:] Kinda like, y’know, a law of the universe.
Take rolling the dice. Do you think that’s totally random?
----
Absolutely. However, something may waver,
thus increasing a tendency of a desired result.
[YUUJI:] It is, for sure, but there’s still, like, fluctuations going on.
There’s this one outcome that’s more likely to show up. It’s a secret, though.
----
Yeah! You know about that?
Lucky 6 Lotto. You know, the one with 6 numbers.
[YUUJI:] Oh, yeah, right! You know about that one thing?
That Takarakuji Nottery 6, where you gotta match six numbers?
[NOTE: I think he’s confused about the name “Takarakuji Loto Six”, saying it as “Takarakuji Noto 6″ instead]
----
I understand the wavering law to that too.
I won’t actually do it, but I’ve been researching it.
[YUUJI:] I’m totally wise to that trick I was talking about, the rule of fluctuation.
I don’t play myself, like no way, but I study it.
----
So, my best friends always come to me for the numbers.
I only tell them this, and they seem to work.
[YUUJI:] So my buddies are always coming to me to ask what numbers they should pick.
And like, I don’t wanna brag, but they do pretty good.
====
REACTIONS:
{ANGER:
You’re free to doubt me, but there is a wavering law
I haven’t won, but there’s an explanation for that too
[YUUJI:] Well, you don’t gotta believe me, but that law of fluctuations definitely exists.
Well, not that I’ve ever won myself, but there’s a reason for that.
----
If you buy it yourself,it’s influenced by evil Shinen.
That really hinders things.
[YUUJI:] When I play for myself, the tickets get affected by evil thoughts.
That’s gotta be gumming up the works.
----
So, you believe me?
Uh oh, this is bad. I shouldn’t be doing this.
I gotta get back to work.
[YUUJI:] *Sigh*... Get it now?
Oh, whoops. I can’t be standing around doing this.
Gotta get back to work. Later.
[SCENE ENDS]
}
====
{EMOTION: SURPRISE, DISMAY, COOL, SADNESS, HAPPINESS: give you different emotion values, but the response is the same:
いや~でもね~。
まあ、ぜひ数字を教えて欲しいと 言うなら教えてあげられるけど どうかな~。
Nah, but, ya know...
If you want me to tell you the numbers, I will.
You never know...
[YUUJI:] No, but like...
Well, if you ever want me to tell you some numbers, I’ll do it.
Who knows what’ll happen...
----
If you know, you’ll surely succumb to greed.
That’s mankind’s downfall.
[YUUJI:] Cuz if you know ‘em, you’re gonna be driven by greed.
And that’s your life ruined right there.
----
Well, shall I go?
I have to get back to work.
[YUUJI:] Anyways, can I go?
Got some work to do.
----
*Phew* Being a grown up is busy
[YUUJI:] *Sigh*...
Sure is busy being a grownup.

Chapter 06: secondhand embarrassment theater at YUZI
[Some pretty huge omissions in the English version of this scene.]
---
While wandering aimlessly in his store, Yuzi stopped occasionaly to peer at a monitor that was behind a customer.
”...Huh...”
”...Haha...”
/Yuuji was puttering around the inside of the internet cafe. From time to time he’d stop, and sneak a look at the monitor over a customer’s shoulder./
[YUUJI:] “...Hmmm...
“...Ha ha...”
---
The customer noticed this, looked over his shoulder and glared. Yuzi gave a warm smile and acted as f nothing had happened.
However, he came to another booth, stopped and stared again. An aggitated customer raised his voice.
/Noticing this, the customer turned his head and glared. Yuuji gave him a fake smile and started his rounds again as if nothing had happened.
But when he arrived at another booth, he stopped again, and stood there staring intently. And of course, the customer lost his temper and started to yell./
---
”Hey, what’s the big idea staring at me like that?”
Yuzi’s eyes fluttered about like he was playing dumb.
”Huh?” ”No, not ’huh’! You’ve been staring at people’s monitors! Are you a freak or something?”
[CUSTOMER, offscreen:] “I’ve had enough of this! What are you doing?!”
/Yuuji looked around, all innocence./
[YUUJI:] “Huh?”
[CUSTOMER:] “Don’t ‘Huh?’ me! You’ve been peeking at everybody’s monitors this whole time! Are you some kinda pervert?!”
---
”Hahah, you callin’ me a ’freak’? How rude...” ”You’re staring at us!” ”Yeah? What if I am?”
”I’m just cleaning and haphazardly seeing it.”
[YUUJI:] “Ahaha. A pervert? Jeez, that’s pretty rude.”
[CUSTOMER:] “You were peeking at that other guy’s monitor too!”
[YUUJI:] “I just happened to catch a glance. It was a total coincidence...
“Sometimes when I’m cleaning, the monitor winds up in my line of sight.”
”You dirty liar. What are you cleaning?”
”Seems you’re interested in the Kisaragi message board. ”Are you posting here or something?”
[CUSTOMER:] “You friggin’ liar! What are you even cleaning?!
[PROBABLY FIRST CUSTOMER:] “I think he’s curious about the Kisaragi BBS!”
[CUSTOMER:] “You post on there, by any chance?”
[note: This conversation is really fun to figure out, since there are no dialogue tags or sprites, but this part switches between koitsu (“this guy”), and omae ("you”), so I think the middle line is from the first customer.]
---
”Not necessarily, just had a brief interest in it. So, what kind of stuff are you writing here anyway?”
”Wonder if you’re a troll.” ”What’s a troll?” ”I’ll pound you!”
[YUUJI:] “...Nah, I don’t. I was just a little curious. You know, what kind of things people are posting.”
[CUSTOMER:] “Say, are you that troll Pippin?”
[YUUJI:] “Huh? Merry and Pippin?”
[CUSTOMER:] “I’m gonna kick your ass!”
[NOTE: Originally he pretends to hear it as ‘Pipiruma’, part of a theme song from Magical Princess Minky Momo.]
”Don’t mess with me! You think I’ll come here again?
The customer was spouting out complaints as he left.
[PROBABLY FIRST CUSTOMER:] “This is ridiculous! I’m never coming here again!”
/The two customers left the store, grumbling./
---
Huh... I wonder why he got the idea I was a troll?
Like I said, I only check that forum occasionaly.
So people hate these so-called, ”Trolls”?
He’s wrong about me.
[YUUJI:] Huh. I wonder where they got the idea I was Pippin?
I mean, all I do is look at the BBS every now and then.
This Pippin guy must be really unpopular, huh?
I can’t believe they’d mix me up with him.
---
[YUUJI:] Oh, you’ve been on the BBS a lot, right?
So what do you think about Pippin?
---
{OPTION 1:悪人ではないように感じる | I don’t think they’re bad.| I don’t think he’s a bad guy.
Yeah, that’s right, man.
I don’t think he was such a bad guy.
The internet is free, so isn’t any opinion fine?
It’s not a big disturbance.
...... *sigh*....
[YUUJI:] Yeah, exactly.
I don’t think he’s such a bad guy either.
The internet’s about freedom. So what’s wrong with having a variety of opinions?
They’re all making a big fuss over nothing.
.....Sigh.
}
---
{OPTION 2: イカレた奴だ | They’re crazy. | He’s a nut.
Well, yeah, that opinion surely exists in some.
But that guy is also giving his true opinion at times.
....... Nah, maybe he isn’t?
Yeah, there’s plenty. Yeah, plenty!
I reference others’ posts, but why is it always me?
I guess they have issues.
[YUUJI:] Mmhm, I guess you could look at it like that.
But he does tell it like it is. Sometimes.
...I mean, not even sometimes, right?
All the time. Yeah, pretty much always.
Anyway, it’s nice to get other people’s opinions. But in the end, your own is what really matters, huh?
}
---
[YUUJI:] Yep, it really takes all kinds.
Bye now. Gotta get back to cleaning.

chapter 07: YUZI
[NOTE: You can’t check every location in this section of the game without getting a bad ending; I think Yuuji is fun to check in with, but since this basically just lets you see the BBS, which you can see later in the game, this is pretty skippable.]
======
Hello, hello!
This is a great place, huh!
[YUUJI:] Hey there, nice to see ya.
Boy, you came at a great time!
[note: Another slipup on “ii tokoro”, which is a recurring problem in the localization.]
----
Did you see the BBS? Well, didja’?
Shinji, like, leaked out some rad information!
[YUUJI:] Say, did you see the BBS? Didja check it out?
Shinji-kun leaked some huge news there.
-----
Nah, I’m really proud of all of my friends. Bwaha!
Erm....
[YUUJI:] Man, I’m so proud he’s my friend! Ahahaha!
Uh........
-----
No no, Shi, Shin, Shinjiru, yeah, Shinjiru!
I don’t know no Shinji!
[YUUJI:] No, uh, Shi, Shin... Shinji, Shinjiru-kun! I mean Shinjiru-kun.
I don’t know any Shinji-kun.
----
Of course I don’t know nothin’ ’bout his hacking!
Bwahahahaha!
[YUUJI:] And I definitely don’t know anything about his hacking.
Ahahaha....
------
Well, the suicide group is all over the news.
Good thing we know about it before any suicides!
[YUUJI:] Anyway, uh, they showed that thing on the news about the suicide group.
Boy, thank goodness they found out in time to stop it from happening.
-----
Shinjiru is really awesome!
Yeah, yeah! Aight’, maybe I’ll check the BBS again.
[YUUJI:] Shinjiru-kun sure is amazing!
Yep. Well, maybe I’ll go check the BBS again.
----
You should watch it too!
Well, see ya.
[YUUJI:] You better check it out too!
Bye now.

chapter 05: The Internet
Tumblr media
*head in my hands* all right, let’s do the internet scene
Yuzi is sitting in the back, with a bad attitude, pounding the keyboard.
”Cripes... ARGH...! This son of a...!”
/Yuuji was sitting in the back, pounding a keyboard and complaining about someone./
[YUUJI, off screen:] “Ugh, jeez... Ahh! What’s this guy’s deal?!”
[note:  悪 = “bad”, 態 = “attitude/condition”, but 悪態を付く means cursing someone out or insulting them.]
---
”Why’d he delete my post!? Does this punk think it’s okay’ cuz it’s just the internet?”
”Woah! Deleted again...!”
[YUUJI, off screen:] “Why is he deleting my comments? Seriously, does he think anything goes on the internet?
“Gah! Another one deleted...”
---
”That’s enough already!”
Man, I’m really in for it now...
[YUUJI, off screen:] “Urgh, I’ve had enough!”
[YUUJI, on screen:] Phew... this is a real problem.
---
What, you asked?
I’m grieving the terrible manners and morals online.
[YUUJI:] What is, you ask?
I’m lamenting how bad ethics and manners are online...
---
Even though I haven’t written for a while, it’s
all gone bad, honestly. This is unacceptable.
[YUUJI:] I mean, I thought I’d post a little something since it’s been a while...
...but it’s no good. This is unacceptable.
---
What’s gone bad, ya’ say? They don’t know manners.
Manners are still important even though it’s online.
[YUUJI:] What’s no good, you ask? It’s like nobody understands manners.
You can’t see anybody’s face on the internet, and that’s exactly why manners are so essential.
---
Don’t you feel the same? Now that I mention it...
Why’d ’ya think posts can be erased so easily?
[YUUJI:] You get me, right? So the question is...
...how can anyone be so casual about deleting another person’s comments?
---
Every post can grow meaning if the right people see it.
You agree, don’t you?
[YUUJI:] Even if you don’t like the comment, it could still be helpful somehow.
Don’t you think?
---
{option 1:
>そう思う
>I agree.
>I agree
Yeah, that’s right. You get me.
Just a second ago there was this dude with really bad
manners! He was deleting some insightful stuff! Man!
[YUUJI:] Uh-huh, uh-huh, that’s right. You get it.
But you know, earlier? There was this guy in here with horrible manners.
All I did was leave some honest comments, and they got deleted immediately. Can you believe it?
---
I wrote some pretty intense things up there...
That’s not right...
It’s a real shame that you are so closed minded.
[YUUJI:] I mean, I admit I was the teensiest bit harsh.
But [deleting them] just isn’t right...
It’s like, is your worldview that limited? I feel bad for you, man.
1}
===
{option 2:
>別に、気にしない
>I don’t really care.
>I don’t really care
Many people think the ’net is full of freedom.
But that’s wrong. Have you noticed that?
[YUUJI:] Sure, some people think the internet means you can do whatever you want.
But don’t you realize? That’s not true, right?
---
Didja realize that if ya do that, people may get hurt?
Nah, you didn’t realize it.
[YUUJI:] Acting like that means people get their feelings hurt. Do you realize that?
No, I guess you don’t realize.
---
If you did, you probably couldn’t delete this stuff.
It’s sad that people ignore others’ unique differences.
[YUUJI:] I mean, if you did, you could never just insta-delete things.
Denying people the right to be individuals... it just makes me sad as a human being.
2}
---
Man, I sure am tired. Sadly, I got work to do.
I have to, I’m an adult.
[YUUJI:] Phew... I’m tired, but unfortunately there’s still work to do.
I’m an adult, so them’s the breaks.

chapter 03: YUZI
Welcome. Ah, you’re that guy from before?
Huh... I see... Alright, you want me to show you?
[YUUJI:] Welcome! Oh, you’ve shown up before, haven’t you?
Hmm, I see. So, let me guess...
---
So you’re the type to curiously search the city.
Why, you ask?
[YUUJI:] You’re the inquisitive type, the kind who really explores a town.
Why?
---
We don’t really advertise for this shop.
Don’t you think that those who know it, know it well?
[YUUJI:] Well, [I] don’t really advertise this place.
Don’t you think it has that kind of “insiders-only” vibe?
---
My customers are only those who wanna find great shops.
The others won’t find it.
[YUUJI:] So the people who show up have the curiosity to find good spots.
If you don’t have that kind of fire, you'll never find it.
---
That’s right, you’ve probably been over there.
Oh, what was it called?
Pump... Pump something. Have you heard of it?
[YUUJI:] Oh, yeah. If you’re like that, I bet you’ve been to that one place.
Hey, what’s it called again...?
It’s this store called Pump... Pump-something-or-other. Do you know about it?
---
{Option 1:
>パンプキン・ブラザーズ
>Pumpkin Brothers
>Pumpkin Brothers
Hang on. Why’d you say ”brothers”?
Ahah, you’re telling me two old dudes run it?
Kekeke, I wonder why you came like that?
Oof, that surprised me... It’s not that profitable.
[YUUJI:] Hold on. What do you mean, “Pumpkin Brothers”?
Ahah! So it’s run by these two old guys?!
Heh heh heh, I sure didn’t see that one coming.
Boy, that’s a surprise... It can’t turn that much of a profit.
[note: ... そうくる is literally “Like that” + “to come”, but in this context it means, “Wow, I can’t believe events turned out like this”]
}
{Option 2:
>パンプキン・ウィッチ
>Pumpkin Witch
>Pumpkin Witch
Oh yeah, that’s right!
[YUUJI:] Oh, yeah! That’s right!
}
Witch! Pumpkin Witch!
That place also has a real homey vibe to it.
[YUUJI:] Witch. Pumpkin Witch!
That’s another shop with a real unique feeling to it.
---
Though I dunno about the owner’s gaudy cosplay.
Don’t you think so?
[YUUJI:] But I dunno about that super-flashy cosplay the owner does.
Am I right?
---
Nah, I don’t mean it’s bad, it’s just...
That place is irregular.
[YUUJI:] I’m not saying it’s bad or anything, y’know.
It’s just kinda like cheating.
---
Well if you wanna be cute, how do ya go about it?
What do you do to be cute?
[YUUJI:] I mean, is it fine as long she’s cute?
Do the cute ends justify the means?
---
Well then, my customers are truly pathetic.
If someone interests her, you see them together.
[YUUJI:] I feel bad for the real customers.
‘Cause them and the people who just showed up for her... they all end up in the same place.
---
I should probably tell that to someone sometime.
Well, that’s all for me.
Man, I have a ton of work to do, seriously.
[YUUJI:] Well, somebody’ll have to tell them someday.
Anyway, excuse me.
Sigh... The work really piles up.

chapter 04: Vajra-Wielding Blue Ogre Water
Hey... Welcome...
I’m awfully tired lately...
[YUUJI:] Hey... Welcome...
I’ve been getting tired really easily lately...
---
Maybe ’cause I had problems with tomach acid as a kid.
But I haven’t been drinking carbonated beverages lately
[YUUJI:] Maybe it’s ‘cause I’ve always had gastric problems, ever since I was a kid.
I haven’t been drinking anything carbonated, though.
---
Say, if you look close, do I look tired to you?
[YUUJI:] Hey, just from what you can see... do I look tired to you?
---
>顔が異常に青い…
>Your face is strangely pale
>Your face is strangely pale...
---
Hmm? I’m pale? Oh, that!
There’s a reason for that. I’m takin lotsa chlorophyl.
[YUUJI:] Hm? My face is pale? Oh, that!
There’s a reason for that. I’ve been taking tons of chlorophyll.
---
---
>何か悪い物でも食べたのでは?
>Did you eat something bad?
>Did you eat something you shouldn’t have?
---
Something bad? Hahaha... No way! What a cruel joke!
I’m not a kid, am I!?
[YUUJI:] Something I shouldn’t have? Ahaha... Don’t be silly. That’s too rude even if you’re joking.
I’m not a kid, you know!
---
Is there anyone who cares more about health than me?
For example... I do lotsa’ things...
[YUUJI:] There can’t be anyone else out there who cares more about their health than me.
Like for example... well, lots of stuff, but...
---
---
[branches rejoin here]
I wonder if you’ve heard of ”Vajra blue demon water”!
This is quit effective.
[YUUJI:] Maybe you’ve heard of it? It’s called “Vajra-Wielding Blue Ogre Water”!
This stuff is really effective.
---
Here! This is a special present ust for you!
It has a big kick, so be careful when you drink it!
This awesome stuff’ll make your face pale in no time!
[YUUJI:] Here! A special present for you!
[Item Holy Water received]
It works really well, so be careful drinking it.
After all, it’s so awesome, you’ll be turning pale before you know it!
[note:
These three lines are located at the bottom of the script file (maybe to stick in the code for getting an item?), then the scene goes back to where it was.
“Kiku” isn’t actually supposed to be the loanword version of “kick”, but it does get the feeling across even if he’s not talking about the taste.
I’m pretty sure the third line is just a dumb joke about you know it’s amazing because it actually physically makes you go pale.]
---
What did China call it...?
The place from Journey to the West. I can’t remember.
[YUUJI:] It’s from this place deep in China, I forget the name...
It’s somewhere that shows up in Journey to the West. I can’t remember where right now...
---
Well, they use vajra greens as ingredients and
the people of that area prepare it all by hand.
[YUUJI:] Anyway, that’s where they harvest the ingredients. It’s this rare plant called Kongou-sou.
The people who live there make [the drink] by hand.
[note: Kongou-sou (Kongou Weed) is Geum japonicum. Hence the original “Kongou Ao-oni” name for the water.]
---
Handmade? By hand!
They don’t do that nowadays
[YUUJI:] Handmade? You bet it’s handmade!
You don’t get that kind of thing nowadays.
---
They’re really hard to find but I finally got some!
They cure fatigue and greatly enhance stamina!
[YUUJI:] It’s pretty hard to find, but I finally got some.
It’s stupendous at giving you more stamina and helping you recover from exhaustion. You can see the effects right away!
---
It’s a key aspect of people who work 24/7 like me.
Even as I say this...
[YUUJI:] That’s the most important part for people like me who work 24 hours a day.
Well, even after saying all this...
---
As a kid, I probably wouldn’t care about this.
Well, I’m really busy, so I bid you adieu.
[YUUJI:] You might not find it too interesting, since you’re young.
Well, I’m busy, so excuse me now.

chapter 10: Pumpkin Witch exterior
”GRR, ROWF ROWF!”
”W-What the hell?!”
[DOG, offscreen:] "Grr! Rowf rowf!"
[YUUJI, offscreen:] "Gah! What?!"
Atsuki sees a man pale in the face being barked at by a police hound.
Ha...Hah...
/A man came running up, his face pale, after a police dog suddenly barked at him./
[YUUJI runs up]
[YUUJI:] *panting*
----
So, did you see that?
Dumb dog, barking at me all of a sudden.
[YUUJI:] Hey, didja see that?
Dumb dog! Just started barking at me!
----
Why do cops walk around with these vicious dogs?
I for one won’t walk with an animal like that.
[YUUJI:] How come the police walk around with these vicious dogs?
You'd never catch me out walking with one of those!
----
Cuz it’s just a mangy mut!
Don’t you think they need to be raised properly?
[YUUJI:] I mean, dogs are just dumb animals!
So like, the owner's gotta keep 'em in line, you know? Teach 'em manners.
-----
An animal’s an animal. It could attack at any time!
That’s something that can’t be forgiven.
[YUUJI:] But then I guess an animal's an animal. They might attack anyway. You never know!
You can't trust those things for a second.
----
Ah... But going outside is never satisfcatory.
Officers are constantly staring at people.
[YUUJI:] *Sigh*... But going outside is kinda for the birds, huh?
Cops everywhere, staring at ya...
----
Then they egg on the dogs and make them bite.
Even if we ask what’s wrong we get completely ignored.
[YUUJI:] Setting their dogs on you outta nowhere.
"Is something wrong?" you ask. No response!
----
I wonder if there isn’t enough peace for everyone.
This world’s tough for kind souls like myself.
[YUUJI:] Unsettled times, you know? The people are restless.
Not that things are ever easy for upright souls like myself...
----
Can I ask something?
Yeah?
[COP enters]
[COP:] May I ask you something, sir?
[YUUJI:] Uh, yeah?
----
Sorry, but what’s your line of work?
W-why you ask me that?
[COP:] Sorry, but what's your line of work?
[YUUJI:] Wh-wh-why? Who's askin'?
----
Is this some kinda police interrogation or something?
I-I’m not doing anything! I-I’m going home!
Hey, wait!
[YUUJI:] D-d-don't tell this is an official interrogation?!
I-I'm not doin' nothing! I'm going home!
[YUUJI exits]
[COP:] Hey, wait!

FORT Profile: Ookura Yuuji
Family situation: 4-person family (Parents/older sister)
Owner of Inter- net Cafe YUZI. Business sense is bad, and has changed stores many times. He’s renewing his shop once again, badly.
Owner of the internet cafe Yuuji. Does he have a shred of business sense? He’s failed in many other businesses. But he hasn’t learned his lesson and is changing to a different [kind of] shop. Apparently his sense is completely lacking.
Something about this guy... SOMETHING is just Weird... He’s just Not Normal. What is it?!
Something’s strange about him... It’s just not right... He’s different from a normal person, somehow... Talking to him will get you out of step, too. Terrifying.
Seems he may have been better off staying infec- ted. That may have been better for the people in town.
I almost wonder if he wasn’t better off staying infected. It honestly might have been better for the people of Kisaragi. I think we made a mistake.
He’s finally popular ith the ladies, but this lady in particular is not such a great catch. He’ll lose his money & pride.
He’s finally popular with the ladies, but it was the worst one possible. Speaking in terms of “good” or “bad”, she is, frankly, bad. And once she’s relieved him of his money, she’ll probably just toss him aside like trash. Poor guy.
Somehow his personality has improved. He seems to have calmed down a bit compared to before.
Something about his character seems to have improved. I guess you could say he’s become normal. The way he reacts to things is different from before. Maybe he’s learned how to calm down.

chapter 21: YUZI
”Hey, you Hey, wait! Hang on a sec!”
Yuzi Okura saw Atsuki and ran towards him with incredible energy.
[Yuuji, off screen:] “Oh! Hey, you! Gimme a second! Hey, hey!”
/Ookura Yuuji spotted Atsuki and came running up with great energy./
Phew, great! You can read between the lines!
Hey, hey! Shinji just came here a minute ago?
[Yuuji:] You showed up at the perfect time! Boy, you can really read the room!
Guess what? Shinji-kun was here just a little while ago!
What do you think he said?
Like the one cool beauty brought here. He wanted
to put in a search with the newest machine.
[Yuuji:] And you know what he said?
He wants to look into installing super up-to-date equipment...
like the kind that cool beauty brought in.
But I understand what he meant by that.
It’s these contents for now
[Yuuji:] But I know what he means by that!
Basically it went like this...
What!? You recovered the machinery? Why!?
That was the originally Beauty’s. Won’t it make
those people that took it back gulp in fear?
[Shinji:] What?! They took the equipment back? Why?
[Yuuji:] W-well, it was all Miss Cool Beauty’s to begin with.
It’s totally natural for them to come collect it, right?
[note: ごくごく (goku) can be kind of a gulping sound effect, but it also means “very”. My best guess for the rest of the sentence is that the TL mistook 当然  , “natural”, for 突然, “sudden”? The lines are still pretty straightforward, so I think they just put one of the less skilled TLs on this scene.]
Dejecting that great machinery... What a waste.
Wasn’t it good to rent at least one from the shop?
[Shinji:] [Using all that] great equipment [for just a few days]... Sigh... what a waste...
[You] were loaning them the shop, so wouldn’t it have been fine to take just one?
[note: スゴスゴと (sugosugo to] means to do something in a sad or dejected way. Here the を in front of it signals that the action is being done to the equipment, but Shinji’s sentence trails off before we find out what it the action is, so I had to do a little guesswork.]
Woah, you got one!?
I donno. ’cause it hasn’t been put into slate.
[Yuuji:] Huh?! Did you take one?!
[Shinji:] Come on, man. It’s not like I was around to do it.
[note: 知らない (shiranai) literally means “don’t know”, but it’s also used to express feelings like “Ugh, come on” or “Whatever, I’m done”. As for the rest of the sentence, it looks like the TL might have taken it for Shinji saying he couldn’t pay for the item in person and had to put it “on the slate”, which is a UK expression I wasn’t familiar with myself until I looked it up. Of course, this is based on misreading the earlier lines, so I’m almost certain this scene was done by someone not fluent in either Japanese or English.]
Ah, yeah, I guess. Haha... Hahahaha...
Man, what should I do? I thought one was left...
[Yuuji:] O-oh, yeah... Ha ha... Ha ha ha...
[Shinji:] Ugh, what am I gonna do now...? I thought the equipment would still be around...
Is it *that* important?
Most definitely! So, it came today, ya know?
[Yuuji:] Huh? Did you need it [for something]?
[Shinji:] I really need it! Do you know why I came here today?!
Y,yeah!
... Huh? I donno... Hahaha, sorry...
[Yuuji:] R-right, sure!
.....Uh. I don’t know why... Ahaha... sorry.
I wanted to look into the world’s isasters with it.
If only the strange things that happened in Kisaragi.
[Shinji:] I wanted to use that equipment to investigate strange happenings around the world.
All this strange stuff happened in Kisaragi recently.
It can’t be just this place
If you say so, it must be true.
[Shinji:] It can’t be confined to [Kisaragi].
[Yuuji:] Now that you mention it, I guess not.
Totally! So there are more things that’re still hidden
And then the world scale.
[Shinji:] Right? There’s a lot we don’t know. It’s still being hidden from us.
On the world scale too.
Don’t you want to know?
I want to clarify the results from the confusion.
[Shinji:] Don’t you want to know [that stuff]?
Don’t you want to figure out the reason for people suddenly going crazy?
Yeah, that’s right!
Teehee, Totally! So let’s gather the machinery.
[Yuuji:] Aha! I sure do!
[Shinji:] Heh heh. Thought so. So [let’s get some] equipment together.

[notes: I’m working on the FORT info files now, so I’ve gone back and fixed some of the map descriptions, and I’ve determined that 如月学園高等科 is best translated as “Kisaragi Academy for Advanced Study”, so I’m going back now to fix that in the profiles. There’s still a distinction between advanced studies and schooling that doesn’t take you on to college, but it’s the more formal name of the entire school, not a division made within the school.]
Some digging in the files under the cut....
Tumblr media
These are the named character palettes/sprites that appear in the face file: Midou AKiRa, Matsumura AOI, Nagashima AYA, EDWard Steiner, “FOO” Meiling
Tazaki HIRoshi (confirmed him and not Hirooka by viewing palette), Hino HoNOka, INAgaki Shunichi, Tohno KEI, Hoshino KuNIo, MAZ: Arthur Mays, Nozaki MIKa, Kamishiro NAMi, Hidaka NAOto, NRA: NoLA Dobereiner (possibly supposed to be Norah??)
NaTsuKi Venevskaya, RAY Platiere, RAZzly/Lazuli, Takano Reiji (viewing file as palette confirms it’s him; RE-G would be pronounced Rei-ji)
Yamase RUI, Unami RYOu, Enokida ShIGeru (Shi sound is part of the sa-shi-su-se-so line in Japanese and is often written Si by Japanese native speakers)
Naruse ShiNJi, Yamato TADashi, Saijou AtsUKI, Kamishiro YAYoi, Sakai YuMiKo, Yamase YUI, and Ookura YUZi/Yuuji.
So this might confirm the intended spellings of Foo Meiling, Norah Dobereiner, Razzly Portman, and O[o]kura Yuzi. ...except they don’t seem to have given Foo to the in-house translators, since her name is spelled Fu in-game. And even if REG is a pun on its pronunciation, that doesn’t account for Arthur.... Maze??
Then we have...
Tumblr media
uh oh!
Okay, well, the characters who weren’t named above are:
Inoue Takuya, Kiryuu Hibiki, Makino Sayuri, Andou Mako, Hamana Katsuhisa, Handa Ai, Kagami Kyousuke, K. Suzu, Lil, Liu Yee, Midou Kenichi, Graham Miller, the cop character with a sprite, Noguchi Kenzou, Tazaki, Kamada Touma, Melody and Mint.
Tumblr media
According to my ability to decipher images that look like the above, I can figure out that:
Z01 is Kiryuu Hibiki
Z02 is Graham Miller
Z03 is Tazaki
Z04 is the nameless cop
Z05 is Noguchi Kenzou
Z06 is Hamana Katsuhisa
Z07 is Kagami Kyousuke
Z08 is Kamada Touma
Z09 is Hirooka Tomoyo
Z10 seems to be a scrapped sprite for Mint that ultimately wasn’t used for her lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Z11 is Andou Mako
Z12 is Lil
Z13 is Makino Sayuri
Z14 is Midou Kenichi
Z15 is Tsuji Anan
Z16 is Tanaka
Z17 is Inoue Takuya
Z18 is Suzu
Z19 is Handa Ai
Z20 is Melody
Oddly, Liu Yee doesn’t seem to be present anywhere here. HAHA sorry I missed that RYU is... the highlighted file in the first picture I posted. That’s him in between Ryou and Enokida.
Note after some trial and error if you’re doing this yourself: Use Tinke to ‘Open as...’ a Palette first. THEN open the same file as a Tile (set as 4bpp or 2bpp) and increase the height until you can see the whole thing. That gives you something much easier to interpret. Viewing as a Map will also give you a decent picture of the file, but again, view it as a Palette first. Also, this method is only working for me in the English version of the game.

ITEM collection
[note: as with the character names in the profiles, I haven’t been able to find where the item names are located in the script files. Since I’m in the end game and only have a few items left in the inventory, I’ll just be giving them my own labels in {brackets} for now; labels in those may not reflect the original Japanese text. And I don’t know if it’s mentioned in-game, but the voice on these indicates that Nola is the one cataloging them.
EDIT: located the item names in the bindt/gymsys file!]

A notebook full of bad things about students. It’s Takuya’s Shinen. He’s creepy.
A notebook found in the courtyard. Seemingly an ordinary notebook, but scrawled inside is a terrifying amount of insults about people around the school. Judging from the Thoughts clinging to it, it must be Inoue Takuya’s. He’s a seriously gloomy guy...

Yuzi’s holy water. Strange, sticky and very blue. Who dares to drink this?
A bottle from Ookura Yuuji, full of Kongou Ao-oni water. Looks pretty dodgy. Within a truly suspicious bottle, a risky proposition no matter how you look at it, is a gooey, deep blue liquid waiting for its next challenger (read: victim)...
[note: I started this playthrough some years ago, so it’s been *quite* a while since I played the scene where he gives you this. I can tell they changed a fair amount in the localization, so this is a translation lacking some important context.
Kongou: refers to a vajra or other indestructible substance
Ao oni: the blue type of traditional Japanese ogres. Think the guys who Goku meets in ‘HFIL’.
I can’t tell without seeing the scene whether these need to be translated, or whether it’s a brand name or something. ...And, to top all that off, the clauses in that second sentence are *really* something, so I tried to separate them out as accurately as possible.
Note from the future: “Vajra-Wielding Blue Ogre Water” is just fine as a translation.]

A murderer’s knife, hidden in the grass in front of Soejima Mansion. The Thoughts clinging to it reveal that it was used for a killer’s crime. The blood has been wiped clean with something, but a slightly unpleasant coating of rust remains.
Bank Robber’s Gun

AMS bank robber’s gun. He was a cop. He dumped the gun and ran. He cleaned it very well. It is black and shiny.
A gun used in a bank robbery at AMS Bank. Clinging to it are the ominous Thoughts of the police officer who was the culprit. It seems the culprit threw it away while he was escaping. I wonder if it was well-looked after? It shines black, with not a speck of dirt in sight.
[note: This is lost a little in translation, but to a Japanese audience, the mere fact that the culprit had a gun is a strong indicator that he was a cop using the weapon he was issued for his work. In America you might acquire a second gun to avoid suspicion when it goes missing at work, but Japanese gun laws would make that more trouble than it’s worth.]
Sports Drink

[note: The message as described here uses “watashi” instead of the “boku” you see when Aya relays it to you in the game. I can’t say if the game is going for something here, or if it’s just a mistake.]

A letter from Kei to Rui He wrote about happy days together shopping and eating. It’s full of appreciation.

The key Ryo dropped a year ago in the trash. The locks changed so This key is useless. He needs to be more careful taking out trash.
The key Unami Ryou dropped a year ago while putting out the trash. The locks have been changed, so it’s useless now. Also, locking yourself out every time you take out the trash? Please work on your ability to learn from mistakes.

TAG LIST
I’ve been trying to get this set up as a Page for a while, but Tumblr’s been fighting me so *shrug* here it is as a post instead
CHAPTERS:
Chapter 02 (in chronological order) (NOTE: I only did a few scenes from this chapter)
Chapter 03 (in chronological order)
Chapter 04 (in chronological order)
Chapter 05 (in chronological order)
Chapter 06 (in chronological order)
Chapter 07 (in chronological order) (IN PROGRESS as of April 2021)
Chapter 16 (in chronological order)
Chapter 17 (in chronological order)
Chapter 18 (in chronological order)
Chapter 19 (in chronological order) (missed some scenes in this one since I’m locked into a bad ending medium ending where I killed some folks but got the good end anyway??)
Chapter 20 (in chronological order) (also missing some scenes with Kiryuu and Honoka)
OTHER:
General informational posts
Kisaragi BBS threads (just a few, mostly the plot-relevant ones after chapter 16)
Silent battles
Shinen/Thought dives
Information like profiles, map descriptions, etc.
Official FORT profiles (all characters except FORT employees; Inagaki’s is at the start instead of in chronological order)
FORT data files
Items | QR cards
Seagull broadcasts (usually one per chapter)
TRANSLATION ISSUES:
Minor alterations from the original script
Subject/object errors that twist sentences grammatically
Particularly error-ridden scenes that still get the basic idea across
Huge, baffling mistakes that completely change scenes
CHARACTERS:
(note: these will, of necessity, be very out of order if I ever go back to earlier chapters, since I started at chapter 16. Add “/chrono” to the end to see them in posting order, but I’ll just do the plain links here since I can’t get them in real chronological order.
On different name romanizations from the EN release: Name order and changes like Mido > Midou or Ryo > Ryou reflect current romanization standards of Japanese names and are just a matter of how you prefer your localization. Changes like Razzly > Lazuli and Yuzi > Yuuji are my own interpretation of the “intended” version and may not reflect the creators’ actual intentions; these have been noted as “X in EN release”.
All-caps indicate surnames/family names.)
