I was your Secret Santa for @oofurixmas​ this year :> You mentioned you’d love to see people just being nice to Mihashi, and I am of the opinion that few things are nicer than hugs (especially group hugs!) This fandom is so incredibly talented, and I feel a bit intimidated seeing other people’s works, but nevertheless I hope you like it ❤️⚾ Lastly, I feel the need to mention that I used one of @azeher’s amazing arts as a loose reference (not even an Oofuri one heh)

here is my @oofurixmas gift for @mskermit! you mentioned pacific rim au in your requests and i adore a good pacrim au but i’ve seen a lot of mihashi and abe as drift compatible.... but none with them as scientists!!! (i know but hear me out)

so mihashi is absolutely reckless enough to try drifting with a kaiju, especially if he thinks it will help everyone. in my mind ren had momoe as an instructor in school before she got recruited to oversee the jaeger pilot training program (and then to marshal of the tokyo shatterdome) and she saw that he has a weird affinity for the sciences as well as baseball, and while she absolutely would have loved to convince him to go be good at baseball and be happy and carefree she had a sinking suspicion that humanity might be depending on a scientist with whack ideas that thinks outside the box someday, and so did what she could to ease his anxiety and be supportive in his more academic pursuits, and because mihashi was never actually dumb or bad at science and he just lacked that support network and the confidence to follow his gut, when momoe gives him that he ends up being really hecking good at it. his interests are quite narrow and he never manages to test well across the board because So Help him if he has to try and focus long enough to study for a subject he is not particularly interested in (the math. he hates the math. get the math away from him and let him stick his hands in something, please, numbers make no sense but if he can see it or better yet touch it he can figure it out, definitely, for sure!!!)

abe gets injured before he can go pro with a team and then when monsters start coming out of rifts in the ocean he decides he’s going to try to figure out how and why. he thinks the best way to do that is with numbers, because while dimensions and giant aliens may or may not be real and may or may not be here to wipe out humanity, numbers are a constant and you can’t lie with them (okay, you definitely can, but the evidence is always right there if you just know how to look for it and what to solve for and you don’t let yourself get distracted, because that’s nothing like how anything else works at all okay shut up he knows but numbers just make so much more sense, leave him alone)

anyway their methods are totally opposite when they both end up at the tokyo shatterdome together (sakaeguchi convinced momoe to recuit abe, said he was really good at what he does, and mome had her Doubts after meeting him but she trusts her team and was willing to give it a go, not like they had a ton of options left anyhow, humanity is starting to get desperate) so they get along like a house on fire and abe yells a lot, of course, and mihashi remembers why he thought he sucked at school and almost asks momoe to fire him because he doesn’t think he can handle the pressure, but between momoe’s unshakable calm and jaeger pilot tajima’s sunny encouragement he ends up staying and trying to figure out how to work with his super smart but super scary lab partner to try and save, like, all of humanity or whatever (and he gets to put his hands in lots of squishy alien guts and learn all sorts of things about them that he never would if he had a different job, this is the best, actually!!! even though it is also really scary!)
