I'll never get over the fact that when Gale asked Katniss where they would be if Peeta had been a jerk and died in the Games she's all 🙄 "we'd be hunting."

But then Peeta drops the baby bomb and Katniss is like "if I hadn't denied myself of ever wanting children, this would be real and I'd be pregnant with Peeta's child right now."

i do wonder why fandom is so insistent on proving that "gale could eventually change his mind" when it comes to fatherhood.

if children are something you ideally want in your romance - that is completely valid and luckily for you, there are several romance options in the game that can provide just that. wyll, lae'zel, and halsin. even shadowheart briefly mentions that children might be a possibility for her in the future. 4 options total that either already have entire adoption subplots or are open to the idea.

meanwhile, fandom is bending over backwards, bringing up aspects of gale's arc that are completely irrelevant to the topic at hand and claiming that any statement coming from gale or any boundary he sets should forever be questioned because... "he has been known to have inferiority issues"?!

gale is a character who is very likely in his 40s. he isn't some 20-something college boy who is still trying to figure everything out. i personally never felt like there was any point in the context of gale's relationship with tav where he was unsure about his desires. quite the contrary.

gale is also very vocal about what he wants. not wasting any time in proposing to tav after the big bad had been defeated. i am pretty sure there would have been instances where gale expressed his desire to have children (whether that may mean immediate or somewhere down the line) if larian had intended to include this aspect in his romance as well.

...but instead all we have to go on when it comes to the subject of children in general are lines like these:

player: gale... how would you feel about having another person in our relationship?

gale: what, like a child? i'm not quite sure i'd consider myself father material, plus our current lifestyle isn't exactly what i'd call settled...

tara: this is why mrs. dekarios and i will be waiting an eternity more for grandchildren.

gale: psst! shoo, tara.

nodecontext: shooing away tara like one would a naughty cat.

gale, upon spotting oliver during their game of hide and seek: ah, i have you! just a shame i don't want you.

The duality of BG3 fandom for me comes to this:

There's a group of people who are - despite this being an option in game that bears (no pun intended) no consequences - convinced that based on voice acting and previous trauma Astarion is absolutely not into having a polyamorous relationship and at the same time there are people who completely ignore Gale's reaction of explicitly not being into poly and he's still being put into poly in fanart and fanfiction.

Some things are just beyond my understanding, I suppose.

BEAR WITH ME BUT (and sorry if this is a bit ooc for Gale, but I swear it's a tale of mutual errors) thinking about an angsty Tav x Gale situation in which Tav was an ex-lover of Gale's before, and even DURING his Mystra dating arc; in which Tav watched Gale slowly but surely distance himself from their relationship after Mystra showed herself to him - and with a cocktail of Mystra's manipulation/grooming and Gale chasing ambition, the relationship between Tav and Gale ended on pretty awful terms.

AT THIS POINT IT GOES A BIT "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (if it wasn't already a bit like that) because I reckon the relationship ending on terrible terms of COURSE leads to a mutual melancholy and rage between the two, and they decide they both want to forget each other entirely - so Gale, with the help of his goddess, uses magic to cover the memory of Tav from his mind - and Tav inversely forgets by means of their choice (against their will, maybe?? eyes emoji).

I think - now KEEP bearing with me - they meet again as 'perfect strangers' after the whole WORMING process and slowly but surely start to fall in love with each other again, but there's something that simultaneously pulls them away as they try to pursue the feeling further. Eventually all is unravelled underneath the stars as they slowly piece the final puzzle pieces together.

Features the emotionally brutal conversation that comes with past wounds that were never healed properly - ugly tears and croaked out apologies in the dead of night - but eventually agreement that they're different people now, they accept the past and all the mistakes within it, and that they can hopefully do better by one another now - if they are willing to risk it again.

Bonus points if Tav never took another lover again within that timeframe between the breakup and nautlioid because "nothing felt right". Bonus BONUs points if Gale recognises Tav first, despite the magical nature of his memory fog.
