Up to 41 tonnes... of pure grace and serenity 🙏😇🐋 . Apart from being enormous predators battling even bigger squids in the deep dark ocean... Sperm whales are just beautiful, peaceful creatures almost effortlessly cruising through the ocean... 🌊 . Like many other marine mammals they form close bonds within their pods, communicate in a highly intelligent way, share maternal responsibilities and live rich, emotional and multifaceted lives 😇 . Let's not forget about the whales. Ban on commercial whaling has been a huge help for them in the '80s, but nowadays it's only the tip of the (melting) iceberg. Posted @withregram • @sealegacy Palau, an archipelago consisting of more than 500 islands, established itself as a global leader in the marine conservation space in 2015 when the Palau National Congress (Olbiil era Kelulau) made a landmark decision: to designate 457,077 square kilometers of Palau’s ocean as a fully protected marine sanctuary. The Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS) now makes up 80 percent of Palau’s territorial waters and is known locally through "bull", a traditional practice that places a moratorium on actions that have a negative impact on the community. According to Palauan fisherpeople, the creation of the sanctuary has had a positive impact on their ability to sustainably harvest from the sea for local consumption. Fusing tradition with innovation, the Palauan nation has become a guiding light when it comes to protecting marine life for future generations. Not only is the PNMS a testament to the effectiveness of MPAs, but it is also a call to action for the rest of the world — to follow the example of Palau and play our part in protecting at least 30 percent of all oceans by 2030. It’s a good day to be a Sailfish! 🦄🌊⛵ 🐟 These incredible predators always hunt in small groups, increasing the disorientation and chaos within the tasty fish ball! ⛵ They raise their sails, approach slowly and stealthily… and then, BOOM! Orca's dorsal fin seems just preposterously large, but why? 🤔 . Actually it's the biggest dorsal fin of any mammal and can grow up to a stunning 1,8m! 🤯 . It acts a keel on the boat - balancing and providing sideways support. Some studies suggest that it also acts as cooling device - keeping the fin above the water during long swims might prevent the animal from overheating! 🧊 . As every fin, they don't have any bones, just collagen. That's why they sometimes collapse and bend! Especially prevalent with captive orcas, but also present in nature, the phenomenon is not clearly explained 🤔 . Some researchers say it's due to poor nutrition and stress, others that it's a natural reaction to lack of long distance swimming. The conclusion is unclear, but it's not like we need one more reason to not keep orcas in tiny tanks for entertainment. Here is something you don't see everyday... Or barely ever in fact! 🤯 . Albino orca! Note how the usual snow white spot around the eye is still distinctive, because albinism only affects the melanin-filled black areas of the body 🖤 . As incredible as it looks, this condition is most likely caused by inbreeding. On the bright side, there is no other visible disadvantage to this genetic peculiarity ☺️ . But why would orcas be inbred? Well, this brings us back to orcas' cultures (again). In some pods, almighty grandmas teach distrust towards the strangers, preferring to 'keep things within the family'. Some underwater encounters are just too good to be true 😍 . Orcas are incredibly social animals, forming complicated relationship and behaviors within their pods 🐳 . While they're impeccable predators, strength is not what drives them. It's the smarts! Gentle giants catching some zzz's in a very unique way 🐳🐳🐳 . Everyone deserves a break! When sperm whales need some rest, they would gather vertically, in a group of 5-6 and just hang there, almost motionless! 😀 . Different than humans, marine mammals have a lot to worry about while sleeping! That's why their brains never fully rest - they need to keep controlling their breathing and byouancy 🧠 . Sperm whales don't spend too long lingering though.
