In regards to me being quiet and also my posts from a few days ago!! Thank u everyone for the kind words and support so here’s an update!

LOOONG POST sorry mobile users! tw: depression/ death/ abuse

This is basically my story from the past two years and also a big thing that happened two nights ago. Skip to the last like 3 paragraphs if you just want like the recent update thats fine!

To start with this has been like a really rough summer I’m so sorry to basically everyone for anything from ignoring messages/ taking like a million years to respond/ dropping the ball on plans and communications big time and stuff. I’ve kind of gone into autopilot and it’s not even a good autopilot I’ve just been like going to work, eating, and sleeping. The sole reason to this is that even though I know its been a few months but my best friend died april and im still struggling with depression and stuff ect ect I literally don’t think I’ve gone a single day without thinking about her so there’s that and I def have gotten a lot better overall but like. I think it will still take some time for me to really bounce back.

I used to go to scad/ art school but when she was diagnosed and they knew she wouldn’t make it I came home because I literally couldn’t function living two hours away and knowing that she was dying and I was missing the last time we would get to spend together. It didn’t help that ALS took her ability to communicate even via text really early on so unless I was like physically with her I wasn’t able to communicate. Also before she was even diagnosed her father refused to take her to doctors visits/the hospital because he didn’t think she was sick so it was on me and our other best friend to literally pick her up (she couldn’t stand unassisted) and take her to these appointments. I was the one that took her to the emergency room when the neurologist said something was seriously wrong and her dad refused to do it like I came to her house and picked her up and walked her out the door as she said goodbye to her dad and he just sat on the couch ignoring her even as she said good bye again and again. I sat in the ER for almost twelve hours as we waited for a room like i held her so she could get urine samples and we watched vine compilations and stuff and laughed about it but after this i only lasted like a month at school before i had a huge breakdown and returned home to spend time with her permanently.

WELL back to bad dads and tying this into what happened this week I am in $97k debt from having gone to art school. I will be well over 100k after I finally graduate.

The only reason I went to an expensive art school is me and my sister used to have a college fund. Like enough to cover BOTH of our tuition's at any school. My dad spent it. On planes and boats and cars and motorcycles. Over and over again. BUT when I was crying in the living room about how I just wanted to go to art school because I wanted to be an artist he promised he would help me and we would be able to do it and he’d pay for it.

Well! When I came home from school because like my best friend was dying I got an update on that and it was: he is not actually paying for it.

My dad cheated on my mom tons during their marriage. He was also (as I’m learning now) emotionally abusive and manipulative. Also he tried to steal my sister at one point?? Thats new information and I don’t know how to process it but. Anyways. After my parents divorced he moved away pretty soon after like two hours away which he wasn’t supposed to do he was supposed to stay close to me and my sister till we graduated highschool. He moved even further away and pretty soon we only saw him maybe once or twice a year. Sometimes he would pass through our town to go to a biking festival or something and he wouldn’t visit us. He might stop by for a single lunch but basically he singlehandedly seperated himself from us.

My dad is incredibly wealthy. He makes a three figure salary and lives really minimilstically. EXCEPT for the fact that he is . constantly. blowing thousands and thousands of dollars on cars and motorcycles. He grows bored of them and gets new ones every few months. He also puts thousands of dollars into tricking them out with surround sound systems and special lights that project pictures onto sidewalks and ect. Hes also constantly cycling through girlfriends and cheating on them as well. Even the moving thing is just because he grows constantly bored of everything and moves on as he pleases. He also complains constantly about spending money on me and my sister despite the fact that he goes on luxury vacations and is constantly buying vehicles and stuff. He once got mad that I said my mom spends child support on electricity bills. “That moneys not for her its for you guys” and i was just like “how do . you think she affords a house for us to live in”

Like I cannot stress enough my moms household was WAY living below the poverty line for almost my entire childhood to when I left for college and my dad is making over 10k a month and complaining about being poor.

But heres’ the big thing. my dads anger issues made visiting him really stressful. I would honestly forget how bad they were until something would trigger him and me and my sister would like crawl away and wait it out. One time he accidentally tracked dog poop into the house and lost it so bad he closed me and my sister into the room and we could just hear him breaking things and yelling and like as a teen/kid that’s scary.

So with all that said here’s what happened Wednesday. We were in the car to visit fireworks. His current gf is a cop and while we were turning out of his neighborhood she made a really lighthearted joke about his driving (he has bad road rage and also drives poorly for fun) I don’t know why but this really pissed him off like. A lot. It escelated severely and Its hard to really paint the picture via text but his gf ended up in hysterics asking him to stop or she would jump out of the car. He was spinning the car out on the highway and alternating between literally ~100mph and slamming on the breaks for no reason. He was going all over all three lanes. The gf was like “stop your children are in the car” and he was just completely ignoring her. She then tried to back peddle and apologize and like hug and consul him but he still ignored her. We drove like that for 30 minutes and honestly it was terrifying and I genuinely thought we would crash (we almost did twice.)

At the fireworks he ignored us almost the entire time. He yelled at me once and pretended he couldn’t hear us. He drove recklessly on the way back. Me and my sister basically went to bed early and I decided we would leave the next day. He came in and realized we were packing to leave. At first he was angry and accused me of taking my anger out on him but I sat him down and basically confessed like. Everything he’s ever done and how me and my little sister are done. I’m tired of him getting so angry we get scared. I’m tired of him endangering our lives and pretending it didn’t happen the next day. I’m tired of him flaunting his wealth as me and my sisters household has lived below the poverty line our entire childhood. He started to cry and said he never gets to see us and I said that’s his fault. He said he barely has any family left and I wasn’t being fair. I pointed out its his fault he moved away. He goes on vacations across the country and goes on cruises but he can’t even be bothered to visit us when we beg him to as he passes through our town on his way to bike week. He went back to anger and said I was over reacting. Then he said it’s not fair that I have kept this all in and never talked to him about it. I have tried! I’ve tried talking about it. I’ve tried ignoring it and forgiving it. I’ve even tried talking with him seriously about his behavior but he always pretends he can’t hear. Literally a few nights prior to this I confessed I wish I had never gone to art school and that he hadn’t lied about helping me pay for college and he ended the conversation by ignoring me and turning the tv up. I told him standing up to him is hard for me as his kid and even though I’m 23 its not any easier. And I can’t imagine how this is for my sister because at 17 I definitely would not have been able to have this conversation. My sister was crying and said she used to get jealous of kids who got to see their dads every day because hers wasn’t around. She later said she wanted to say more but it was too hard and she was still scared.

He immediately stopped being sad and went back to slamming the door and things around as soon as we left the room. We drove back home immediately after. I haven’t heard from him since and honestly I’ve been cycling through guilt anger and sadness. I can’t believe I finally got almost all of it off my chest. I feel guilty that I left him alone on a holiday. I’m mad that he didn’t do more. Whatever!! I guess! anyways but thank you all for you kind messages and distractions this has officially been the hardest year of my adult life but. I guess. Thats just how adulthood be sometimes.

Tl;dr dads anger issues scared me and my sister and i genuinely thought for a few seconds on wednesday night i was going to die so I finally stood up to my dad and called him out for everythign hes put us through but its still uhh hard to deal with on top of everything else

The Humble Adventure of Bitch & Boomer

{hi so during quarantine I had to write weekly journals for English class, and my relationship with my best friend started changing, causing me enough stress to ACTUALLY HAND THIS IN. So enjoy, I feel weird having three chapters typed up doing nothing so...have mercy I word vomited:/

Ps. All our cuss words are bleeped coz it was for school

Chapter One

On April 29th, 2020, Thalia's best friend of eleven years casually mentioned that he wanted to marry her.

Zach and Thalia had been buds since kindergarten. They'd never made any romantic confessions, except for the time Thalia wrote Zach a love note and gave it to him behind a dumpster in fourth grade. She's never been able to live that one down. They've both had feelings for eachother, but never at the same time, leaving them stuck in a vicious cycle of unrequited feelings.

The pair did have two lost years where Thalia couldn't talk to Zach without getting upset. She had left all of her toxic friends behind her and started all over in an effort to salvage her mental health. Zach was not a toxic friend however, he was just friends with the people that were unknowingly being damaging. Thalia had managed to have a pretty okay time with her new friends that were kinder, but after two years of not speaking Thalia didn't really have a say in whether or not they were friends. The two live really close to each other, and on Thalia's walk to school everyday she passed his house. Thirteen year old Zach waited outside every morning just to walk one block with her. That turned into walking home, hanging out during school and eventually helping each other through some pretty tough stuff.

Early in they're first year of highschool, Thalia's dad moved down the street from Zach's house. She went from staying every other weekend at her dad's to every other week, seeing Zach by chance and by choice.

Who would've thought they would have a Boy Next Door™ story?

Highschool brings the two closer than ever, walking to and from school with a longer commute, both almost failing math (well, he failed, Thalia barely made 60%) and became a dynamic duo in their school's cafeteria. Don't get me started on cafeteria, they go to school an hour early to cook and sell baked goods every morning, talking about anything and everything. Not to mention serving lunch twice a week.

Everything was right as rain for a while, keeping up the off and on pining and beating eachother up in the halls. Continuously rolling their eyes at their parents swearing they'll end up together while suppressing their real emotions. Then this little thing called Covid-19 came into the world.

Nothing like a global pandemic to force you into facing your feelings am I right?

One day, Thalia got a call from Zach, not out of the ordinary for them seeing as they do nothing but banter. In this call Zach complains about his mom (also not out of the ordinary) and segways into the dream he had the night before(Thalia regularly dreams about Zach. Romantic or not, he'd been a pretty common occurrence in her subconscious). Zach recounts his dream, that just happened to be about their wedding. This led to them planning their wedding. They talk about the music, and rings (tattoos instead, so they wouldn't wreck rings. Thalia gets a small band to ward off the creeps.), and even plan some food. The back of Thalia's mind consisted of what could only be described as "!!!!!!!!!!". Normally the phrase used was: "If we get married" (in a joking way) but as of recently it had changed to "when we get married". As if the two had accepted the eventuality of being together.

This understandably sent Thalia into a crisis. Never before had she said the words " I'm fine, everything is fine" more in her life.

During quarantine, Zach was the only person Thalia was allowed to see other than her immediate family. To clarify, she wasn't working, he wasn't working, they still kept they're circles as small as possible. All while following social distancing with others and wearing masks. This was a necessary interaction for Thalia and Zach's mental stability. One week alone in her house had Thalia going stir crazy, and had Zach getting in arguments with his parents. To sooth each other's impending breakdowns, they hung out with permission. Walking a block and a half to keep themselves sane. Thalia and Zach don't really function after being seperated for long periods of time.

Now where was I? Oh yeah, Thalia's brain was imploding.

The next day, Thalia asked Zach to go for a walk around Langford lake, figuring there, her best friend would make a move. No such thing happens.

They walk, throw rocks into the lake, and have a good bant. Thalia gives her friend many openings to make his move, but he doesn't take a single one. At one point Zach decides he's going to teach Thalia how to climb a tree (surprisingly easy for her to do, she just never got around to it). The two then spent a solid twenty minutes just looking at each other with expectant looks halfway up a tree.

On their walk home Thalia told Zach about her post secondary plans.

"I think I want to go to UBC for psychology and become a therapist."

Zach looked a bit taken aback, "how are you going to be a therapist on a farm in Ontario?"

"Since when am I going to live on a farm in Ontario?"

Zach proceeded to remind Thalia that his grandfather was leaving him a farm in Ontario, that's why Zach was getting a degree in agriculture. She knew all this of course, she just didn't realize she was coming along.

"We can get some chickens if you want", Zach offered, not acknowledging the weight of his suggestions.

"Sure! Can we work our way up to cows?" Thalia, a drama kid, is good at acting calm while panicking.

The pair planned their life together down to the type of truck and rocking chairs they'd use when making fun of teenagers in their old age.

"There ya go, life planned" Zach finished, patting Thalia on the back. Throughout this conversation Thalia couldn't help but quietly smile. She hadn't realized how much her friend had thought about their future.

Where their hangout usually would end (with Zach dropping Thalia off at her house and walking the rest of the block to his own), Zach asked Thalia to walk with him. She made zero hesitation to agree. Zach ran into his house, returning with donut money, his younger brother, and his dog Bug.

Bug barked at Thalia as usual, but the scruffy little brown and black mut barked slightly less than she had the time before. The group walked to Tim Hortons, chatting and horsing around as per usual. Zach made his way inside and returned with donuts (three for him one for Thalia). She caught him staring at her, smiling with a different light in his eyes. The energy between them was different than usual. There were unspoken things that needed to be said.

Thalia didn't finish her donut. She plopped the rest of her sour cream glaze into her friends mouth without hesitation from either party. They fed each other regularly, Zach putting a water bottle to her lips knowing she was thirsty without even looking. Thalia had a milkshake during a class they shared once, and Zach groaned.

"Ughaghherraaww",he leaned his head back, expelling the noise. Without a thought, Thalia passed her milkshake to Zach knowing that's what he wanted. It took a second for the pair to realize they had communicated abnormally. They were comfortable with one another, never running out of things to talk about.

When Thalia got home, she had a cinematic moment. Closing the door behind her, leaning against it and listening to the rattling of her heart slowly calm. Things were beginning to happen.

Recent events got me wondering why I deal with some people.

It’s no secret that I am a very focused, driven individual, and when it comes to leadership, I hate playing tug-of-war. There are proven, effective ways of doing things that I believe ought to be kept in mind as guidelines even if not adhered to letter-for-letter:

Be willing and able to communicate issues, whether they’re “actual” issues or “perceived” issues, with those who you work with. This is the golden rule, part one. If you’re not willing to put yourself out there then no conversation will ever happen. The issues will perpetuate.

Be willing and able to listen and put to meaningful thought into issues as they’re brought up. This is the golden rule, part two. Communication is a two-way street. You can send all you want but it’s pointless if there’s no one there to receive it. The meaningful thought part is especially important here. Sometimes you have to sit and let words digest instead of going with your knee-jerk reaction. This can be difficult, and is much easier to do via text than it is to do via voice.

Be motivated and show enthusiasm. If the leaders are motivated and enthusiastic about what they’re doing, then others will follow. Positive mindsets, just like negative ones, are contagious.

If you expect the worst, you will usually get it.

In most situations I have been in, these guiding principles have worked incredibly well. These principles guide each and every interaction with my Ebonguard officers, who are absolutely fantastic. People are busy and that’s understandable, but every one of them is a joy to work with and I’m lucky to have them around. (I’d like to make some additions to the team to fill other roles, since most of us are oriented towards the actual administration of the group: looking over apps, chatting with recruits, overall making sure that we can keep the lights on. I would specifically like to add some dedicated RP officers, but this gets tricky when very few members of the LS are self-starters. I think if we get volunteers then we can make it work though as long as the new officers understand what is expected of them.)

I think I can chalk this up in part to the simple fact that the Ebonguard officers are good at what they do. The two most active members of the team have prior experiences, both good and bad I’m pretty sure, with running groups, which makes their insight invaluable and their opinions informed. We can actually sit down and have conversations. We do actually sit down and have conversations. And these conversations are productive! We pin-point problems. We suggest solutions. Sometimes we even plan RP, although schedules occasionally conspire to make that part a little difficult because the most active chunk of the team is comprised of a student, someone who travels like every other week for their job, and an Australian with no sleep schedule. (I wouldn’t have them any other way though!)

This is a very, very stark contrast to these assholes.

I am, for practical intents and purposes, the de facto leader of two seperate groups. One, just mentioned, is good. The other. Is not.

Take everything that makes my Ebonguard officers great and flip it, and you have the Artifice’s officer team.

Dealing with the Artifice team is a special exercise in both patience and masochism. To be completely frank, it didn’t used to be as bad as it is right now, and I have no idea when it got so bad. I know when exactly all the shit came to the forefront and precipitated into the situation that we’ve been living with for the past three and a half months. Before the New Year, we were all bright-eyed and motivated. We had a game-plan. We were going to work together. We were going to use the strong foundation that we built in order to make something truly great. We had a vision. We knew what we had to do, basically, to make it a reality.

... And then nothing happened.

We took December off for Finals season and holidays, as is kind of scheduled and expected, and I can only assume that during that time, something changed. When the clock struck twelve on New Years Day, something changed and it didn’t change for the better. A day passed. A week passed. No word of any change of plans. I rewrote the lore doc like we planned to do. Silence, maybe a grudging pat on the back. I spruced up the interior of the house, providing us with a shiny new space with which to run public events, which has since been used only once, and it wasn’t for strictly FC purposes. We were going to have a linkshell to help us network with people outside of our immediate circle, and although we have it now, it’s a far cry from anything we actually discussed doing and in pushing for it to actually get done -- I cannot and will not be responsible for everything -- I got demoted.

When we got to actually going over what happened in that particular instance, it felt productive at the time. Someone else stepped in to mediate the issue, though at the time I was definitely putting some serious thought into burning the group and moving on with my life. It’s no overstatement to say that I am the primary if not the sole creative force behind everything the FC is and does. I wrote the lore. My character is the last full-time leader of the FC, the other officers having all rerolled into characters who are not only wholly incapable of leading, but who don’t really mesh with the fabric of the group at all (even taking into account the idea that antagonistic relationships between characters within a group can be interesting and can very well be driving forces behind character development!). They do nothing. They affect nothing. They just kind of exist, and the only reason why they haven’t been fired yet is because that would be unfair on an OOC level even if it would be completely reasonable and in-character for my character to fire them or otherwise penalize them for not being useful to the company as a whole.

Unfortunately, it just popped up again. They cite passive-aggression as the precipitating factor despite being completely and totally unwilling to point out passive-aggression as it happens, and frankly since the way that I interface with the group has not changed since way, way back when I still actually liked them, I’m inclined to believe that it’s not necessarily an issue with how I interface but with how they perceive. They aren’t in a mindset that’s conducive to actually getting things done. All they do is ignore things as they’re brought up, or shut them down as being unnecessarily nitpicky, unimportant, or harsh, not even bothering to consider the fact that I don’t pipe up and say things for no reason. If I feel like it’s important enough to bring up, then chances are I have a good reason for it, those reasons ranging from “this is counter-productive” to “this hurt my feelings or made me angry for like five minutes and I would like you to stop doing that thing or take steps to handle similar situations differently in the future.”

But quite literally every time, one or the other chimes in to put the concern down without spending more than a hot 30 seconds considering what I’m trying to get at, and the overwhelming majority of the time they don’t ask me to clarify if I was being unclear, either. One just doesn’t seem to care. The other’s first reaction to anything I try to say that they don’t happen to agree with or like is immediate, intense anger which makes getting anything done impossible. For example, this person went off just the other day and, rather than even considering what I had said or was trying to say at quite literally any point in time, instead went on to characterize me as “having the weight of the world on their shoulders!” and being “easily replaceable.” To be fair, I lashed out first, but I made maybe one or two jabs at the two of them as a pair -- as officers, not even as people. This rant must have gone on for a solid seven to ten minutes.

Both of which I feel aren’t entirely true.

For the first count, it’s true that I voluntarily take on a lot of responsibility in running the company and making things work. I run the designated company plotline. I lead company meetings, in AND out of character because, again, my character is the only full-time leader of the FC. I’ve even started planning and slapping together some OOC shindigs like map parties and movie nights. But I don’t do this because I want an excuse to gripe. I do it because I like doing it. I like writing stories and I like seeing how people interact with the narrative I make. I enjoy playing a character in a position of power, although frankly it sucks that it also means I’m the only member of the officer team who is technically qualified to do the shitty, shitty job of hiring people IC. (There is a very good reason why IC play-ins are no longer a thing for Ebonguard, and its because I despise them. They are never anything but forced and robotic. Leon stops being Leon and starts being Officer Bot 5000 because, again, there’s no prerequisite or allowance for him to just not hire people who don’t leave a good impression on him; by this point in time people are already accepted into the FC on whatever character they applied with, and their character not being hired because my character is an asshole is a little unfair.)

The source of my gripes is not and never has been “I DO EVERYTHING!” in fact quite frankly I’m of the opinion that life would be a lot easier if I did, in fact, do everything. If I did everything then that would mean that everything is done to my (relatively high) standards and specifications, and not only that but they are done in a timely manner. The source of my gripes is, instead, that I’m sitting over here working my ass off while for all intents and purposes, they pick their noses. I’m pretty understanding of prior obligations and life getting in the way of things; it’s not an issue at all with my Ebonguard team even though the breakdown of time available to spend on doing stuff ends up being relatively the same. But their current reasoning does not hold up when taking the entire picture into account. I’m more than willing to and capable of understand/ing when you have to deal with a continuing family emergency. But what I’m not is a mindreader.

One is pretty good at communicating when obligations arise and I respect him for that. My problems don’t usually start with him and in fact if I were in charge I would probably keep him around in the same capacity.

The other? At no point in time did she ever even make the slightest attempt to communicate to me, or the officer team as a unit, that she had some personal issues to deal with. The people closest to her as a person? Sure. I’m not in that group. But the officer team as a unit? Never.

Even discounting the current situation, it neither explains nor excuses the perpetual state of apathy they’ve basically been stuck in since Thanksgiving. One of them used to chip in and DM scenario events from time to time which was a pretty cool gig, and then he stopped. The other used to have a plot chain she was also running, and then lost the motivation for since they can’t manage large stories like I can. She at one point wanted to tie her plot into what I had so that I could continue/finish what she started, but she never gave me the notes and she never followed through on actually doing that. (This is what has happened to every event chain, whether heavy on story or not, that I’ve ever seen her try to run from the start of me being in the FC. It’s not the first time, and I guarantee that it won’t be the last.) This one also told me to my face not too long ago that she didn’t actually have any desire to be a leader and occasionally wondered what it would be like if she passed it off and then joined another FC just to be a member without all the responsibility.

And frankly, I wonder that too; if you don’t want to be a leader and/or don’t have the time or mental energy to dedicate to being a leader, then chances are pretty good that you should step aside and hand someone else the reigns. I would be absolutely willing to provide compensation for material assets and just straight-up buy the FC and take it off her hands. I could probably fix every single issue that the FC has within the span of 72 hours or less.

I also do not like this person as a person because they don’t treat me with respect and yet expect it in return, which is a MAJOR button of mine (I also have a general contempt for authority figures I guess), but it’s 2AM and that is a story for another time.
