Checking on your competitors is not a bad idea, you can even follow them on social media to know what they have been doing to capture the heart of their customers. You don't peep because you want to copy rather you peep because you want to learn and then improve on what you've learnt. Looking from the distance is not bad, just don't do it the same way they are doing it. Develop on it. Have your own standard too, come up with a new ideas of what you've seen them (competitors) do.
