What is Witchcraft?

Disclaimer: Hello everyone, I hope you’re having a lovely day, and if not, I hope your tomorrow is brighter. A little bit about me before we get started: I’m an 18 year old practicing witch living in the mountains of North Carolina. I’ve been practicing on and off for three years but just now have the freedom to practice more seriously. This blog is now my online book of shadows and, as such, all my posts reflect my personal opinion at the time they were written. My opinions are just that, opinions, and are no way representative of the beliefs of the entire witchcraft/wicca/pagan community. In addition, as is necessary and healthy for growth, my opinions are subject to change.

Now that introductions and disclaimers are out of the way, let’s talk about the question at hand, a question that most witches struggle with at some point, what is witchcraft?

In short, witchcraft is a practice centered around the idea of using magic(k) to bring about real change. It is not inherently religious or spiritual, and it does not look the same for everyone. It often includes spellwork, ritual, meditation, energy work, the use of powerful objects, etc, but does not have to include all of these things.

There is no set definition of witchcraft that includes every aspect of all witches’ practices, not because it isn’t real or valid, but because it is individual by design. There is no central figurehead that all witches report to, no unified sacred authority or religious text, no shared mythos we all believe in. Instead, in it’s modern context, it is a term used to describe a category of individuals who choose together to think differently.

In my personal practice, I view witchcraft as a tool of empowerment, self-programming, personal growth, mindfulness, and self-reflection. Everything else is just bells and whistles, vessels to reach those aforementioned ends. It can be deeply spiritual, reverent, and ritualistic at times, but ultimately is simply something I do to help myself.

We know from studies regarding the placebo effect that that which we truly believe has a real effect on our health and overall well being. We know from ethnobotany that plants can truly help heal the human body. We know from particle physics that the impossible can happen, and that we do not always understand why. Therefore, I view the results of witchcraft as psychology mixed with that which we do not yet fully understand. 

Some say that the placebo effect proves that witchcraft is all bogus, to that, I reply, why on Earth would a scientific explanation for our belief make it any less effective. Who says science and witchcraft can’t coexist? If it serves us, if it helps, and if it’s harming no one, then why not?

To any new witches out there who might be stumbling across this post: find your definitions from a variety of different sources, old and new. You’re bound to find something you agree with, and if not, simply create your own definition.

So @onlinebos and I found a spirit drawing us in at a cemetery, and we were drawn to a stone. So we picked it up and brought it. And have been doing pendulum communications with it.

He has been very helpful, if not a bit unsure and cautious. We asked if he wanted he/his pronouns and he said yes, but no to being male, and yes to being trans?

He wants to be relocated to a new cemetery. And he really likes cats.
