in my personal (American) experience, any "small business" big enough to have employees but small enough to not have to listen to labor laws (under 50 employees) is run by fucking ghouls who are actively anti-employee rights and who vote that way. if it's like, one person on etsy or at the farmers market selling their goods that's one thing but anyone who makes themselves a boss can and should be stolen from. infinite growth is the ideology of a cancer cell etc etc, if they love their product so much and don't want it to get stolen they should sell online if i'm being honest!
okay so im a bit short on time so at risk of coming across as, somewhat defensive, im going to directly quote an example from my life rather than try to pretend im not doing that, this isnt defensiveness though, im simply trying to understand.
1 it has not been my experience that size of a company has any correlation with being able to ignore labor laws, and in fact the larger the company is, the more likely they would be to know exactly what laws they could break and bend to avoid getting in legal trouble because they can afford a legal team. and also the risk of bringing up any kind of issue is much higher for an employee of a large corp, but maybe thats just me living in right to work states
2 my friend owns a business. the business model is directly based on providing a space for community. he owns a game "store" that is like 90% space to come in and play games. the LLC has 3 employees, of which he technically is one. he gets a salary from the LLC and it is not a lot. he already has a profit plan in place wherein a percentage goes back into the business to make it better and more functional for its purpose, and is going to start in the next year or so (he only just started this, and wasnt expecting to have hired anyone else yet) to have an employee profit sharing program where the remainder of profits from the LLC get split equally between employees.
i think the "infinite growth" here is primarily geared toward providing a service within the community, a space to exist in. do you extend this same attitude toward a bar? or coffee shop?
i know that this is a specific example for a general question, so i will add some more general stuff, but just a bit bc i gotta get to work. where should one sell things online? you mentioned etsy, should etsy, ebay, or amazon be getting a share of profits from online sales, why? what about a website where you pay for your own domain name? why is the online model better than having a brick and mortar storefront? because people who dont care are able to steal from it? why are we encouraging punishing the people who are significantly more likely to be affected by theft than corporations actively making our lives hell?
and also, to add, i know of a small business owner in my hometown, hes an ass and everyone hates him, and he owns a restaurant that is very successful. you cant steal from it, and its working out well for him. and hes well known for voting dem and also being the biggest ass. so i know they exist, but i still dont see how even if you could that stealing from him would count as direct action. you arent helping anyone really

Results!
I got nearly 5000 votes which is WAY more than i thought I'd get. I expected to top out around 1k, and this has been a really interesting poll to read the notes on. I've been keeping up with it all week, and while the results are basically what I expected, I want to highlight the most common comments I got
63.8% of people, regardless of ability, say they can shop without help, and that it matters a lot, which was a more overwhelming majority than I expected, partly because I expected this to circulate more in disabled circles and I didn't expect the 43% of abled respondents
A lot of people within this group described a time where they hadn't been able to go easily, and cited that as part of why it mattered to them.
Some people who said they could shop without help commented that they would be severely negatively effected by the experience, either due to disability, mental health concerns, or sheer distance. to those people, I hope you get help with your shopping more often than not, and please be kind to yourselves and don't push when you don't need to.
10.1% of abled people can't get to the shops without help
Most of the comments regarding this were about the fucking car culture of the United States. I'm so sorry to you all about that.
A couple folks were rural and unable to drive
Most of this was about access to independent transport and sheer distance, which also came up a lot in responses from disabled people so I'm reminded of the Curb Cut Effect
13.5% of all respondents said that it didn't matter to their quality of life
Those who elaborated on this cited mostly that they had easy access to help they didn't mind accepting or asking for, or that they never really needed anything unexpectedly.
A couple of the above clarified as well that they were teenagers who hadn't had call to leave home yet, and that they expected their answer to change when they moved out
One or two people mentioned that they didn't mind because they'd been unable to for so long that it was just their reality.
the 12.5% of disabled people who can't and who it matters a lot to (like me!) were really helpfully descriptive in their comments
Many people from this group described the ways they get around this problem through use of services like doordash, online grocery deliveries, and other online shopping
A lot of people described the specific difficulties they have accessing shops, either due to the infrastructural problems mentioned above, or due to their specific disability. I don't have much to say about this except my heart is with you all.
Limitations of the poll recognised from comments whose group I can't identify:
Many people were unsure if they "counted" as disabled because their disability is a mental illness, or was "minor". If I'd predicted this I would have clarified that I didn't want to distinguish between physical and mental disabilities, and that degree of disability wasn't a factor to me.
Some people were unsure what an "unexpected" need might be. I specifically was thinking of realising you were out of a vital ingredient while cooking, but didn't want to alienate disabled people who aren't able to cook for themselves, but who still need to go to the store for something, so I didn't specify. I'm not sure how I'd do this differently, perhaps suggesting some examples.
People commented that sometimes they can and sometimes they can't. Variable disabilities were again something i didn't account for. I think I'd specify it as "on an average day" or "on a moderate day" if I ran this poll again.
If you have an additional point you'd like to add, please let me know! This was really valuable to me in validating my discomfort at not being able to go to the shop myself, and I hope it's been similarly helpful for others to know you're not alone, and that it is a big deal.
And lastly, if you "technically can" but it'd incapacitate you to do something, it's okay to say you can't. You're not the problem, your situation is.
I have a theory that my inability to get to the store when I want to go has a serious impact on my quality of life, so here's a question
If you needed something unexpectedly, can you get to the store without help? Does that matter to your quality of life?
Help is whatever makes you feel not independent - ie. i consider a taxi help, but not a bus because i retain my independence when taking a bus but feel like i'm asking for help when i taxi. It might be different for you.
also if anyone has any info on this, like essays or articles by disabled authors or academics I'd love to hear about it.

I get annoyed, like many people, at how long and boring terms and conditions and privacy policies tend to be. I make a point of reading them anyway, as I hate that there's a norm of signing contracts you haven't even read, and though I don't usually understand everything as I'm not a lawyer, it still feels better than nothing. One particularly irritating bit is that despite all this detail, they often don't make clear the information I would actually like to know. I'm sure there are legal reasons for this, but on Tumblr's for example, there's a list of a few actions that are public (liking, replying and reblogging), but it's far from exhaustive. From what I've seen it seems like poll answers and sideblog identities are private, but it's hard to be confident that just because I've never found a list of individual responses to polls I've posted, that information is never shared. Tumblr's UI is too much of a mess for me to confidently make such an inference (and even if other Tumblr users can't see individual poll results, that still doesn't indicate whether it's used by Tumblr & associates for personalized advertising and stuff). For this reason I'm generally hesitant to actually respond to Tumblr polls, which is annoying because they are a fun feature.
There are activities I do that involve websites used by a small number of people for games, mostly reasonably informal but large enough that we do have privacy policies for them. I remember one game in particular was run by someone who happened to be a lawyer, who made a point of writing the privacy policy in a way compliant with all the relevant legislation, and it was way less readable than usual, perhaps more legally compliant but in practice not as fit for purpose. Presumably things would be much worse off if there were no laws on this at all, and I'm far from having enough expertise in the matter to be able to suggest changes to the law that would actually improve things, but it's still frustrating.
Issues with terms & conditions are also a large part of the reason I dislike onlike shopping. Online, each shop gets its own terms you technically have to read. In physical shops, it's just governed by national law, which is not only uniform and therefore less mental strain, but also designed to balance the interests of shop and shopper rather than being whatever the shop feels it can get away with.
Occasionally I'll come across terms and conditions which are pleasantly simple and reasonable in contrast. Netflix is one example of this I remember. It probably didn't make me choose them over their competitors because I didn't read their terms until I'd already chosen, but it does make me feel inclined to like them more.

Family Dinner
Summary: Xiaotian is invited to be a buffer at Red’s family dinner.

“I need your help.”
The tone, barely audible over his music, was enough to make Xiaotian stop his music and look up from his tablet. Red looked nervous, bouncing from foot to foot, and it didn’t help that his hair was down in a poofy mess and he looked like he hadn’t slept for three days. “Sure.” he said, hoping that would help that look fade. “What do you need?”
The look didn’t ease. “Just so we’re clear, you can say no, but my family dinner is coming up and I don’t want to be alone with them but-” Realization came to life. He hadn’t heard much about Red’s parents, but enough had been heard that Xiaotian could get a picture.
“Sure.”
Red came to a stop, eyes widening. “Really?”
Xiaotian nodded, saving his work and then turning off his tablet. “Yeah! If you don’t want to be alone with them, I get it. This hasn’t been the first time I’ve been a buffer.” The other blinked, opened his mouth, and then closed it, clearly confused. “Xiaojiao’s parents love me.” he said, shrugging.
Red blinked again. “...okay.” he finally managed out, clearly moving past it. “Dress up nice and I’ll pick you up on Friday. Thanks.” And just like that, he was walking away.
“You’re welcome!” he called after him, unsure of what else to do.

Thankfully, Xiaotian had two nice outfits. Unfortunately, he also had a complete unawareness if they were nice enough. A quick text to Red, asking where they were going, fixed that. Thankfully, the outfits he had looked nice enough for the place which meant he didn’t need to go shopping.
Thirty minutes before he was supposed to be picked up, Xiaotian smoothed down his shirt. He had decided to go with the dress shirt and black slacks inside of the pretty orange dress, which still left him the question of what to do with his hair. He considered his reflection, humming in thought. He could leave it like it was, with his red headband making it spike up, but that felt too casual. Maybe down? He tried it, considering it. Xiaojiao was at a race in the next town over and was probably asleep at this hour, so he couldn’t call her for her opinion.
A knock on the door made him pull his eyes away. “It’s open!”
The door creaked open, revealing Red. He was dressed similarly, what looked like a fancy jacket slung over his arm, golden earrings in, and eye bags still visible. “I was wondering if you were-” He paused, staring at Xiaotian. It might’ve been the light, but for a moment, he had thought Red had been looking him over in a... boyfriend way, for lack of a better word. “You… have your hair down.” He sounded flustered, at least.
“Yeah, I wasn’t sure if it was nice enough or I should put it into a ponytail…”
“Keep it down.” Red said, scanning him over again with a much more technical look. “But it is missing something.” He looked around before landing on Xiaotian and Xiaojiao’s shared jewelry box. “Mind if I-?” Xiaotian nodded his approval, so Red hurried over. After a moment of rustling around, he pulled something out. “Here we go.”
He had pulled out a pair of golden monkey earrings, a gift from Tripitaka when he returned from visiting New York one time. Xiaotian took it with a word of thanks and slid them in. “You ready?” he asked when he finished, stopping to grab the flowers he had ordered just in case. Red shook his head but gestured to him to go first, closing the door behind them.
Outside, the night was cool. Red led Xiaotian to a small red car and once, they were buckled in, drove silently away from the dorms. 
After a few minutes of tense silence, Xiaotian glanced over at his… he wasn’t sure what they were. In any case, Red was as tense as a board, glaring straight ahead, and looking ready to pass out. “Hey,” he finally said. The other blinked. “It’s gonna be okay.”
“It’s just… it’s the first time I’ve brought a guest to these dinners and my mother wasn’t exactly pleased when I told her you were coming after I asked you.” His knuckles went white on the wheel. “And I’m just freaked out you’re going to hate me after this is done.”
He reached out, holding Red’s shoulder. “Hey. Nothing your parents can do will make me hate you.” Xiaotian tried his best to pour every inch of sincerity into his voice. “You’re great. And there is nothing- RED LIGHT!” At his cry, Red slammed on the brakes, an inch from crossing the red light.
The car once again went silent, except for their frantic breaths and furiously pumping hearts. Ahead of them, traffic furiously drove and drove, busy, busy, busy. The two finally managed to catch their breaths, glancing at each other. When they met eyes, they lost their breath again- this time to relieved laughter. Finally, their light turned green and Red started again.
The brush with life and death had seemed to calm him a bit. He started smiling when Xiaotian turned on the radio and started to bop his head to the music.
But, soon enough, they were pulling into a parking lot. Red went stiff again the minute they had parked. Following his gaze, Xiaotian watched as a black limo dropped off two people at the front. When it passed, he finally got a good glance at Red’s parents.
The small woman in the front must’ve been Iron Fan. She was dressed in an elegant red and gold dress. Her long dark hair was pulled away in a complex hairstyle to reveal a beautiful face with red-painted lips and sharp eyeliner. Behind her was DBK. Sharing his son’s liking of colored hair, his purple hair was pulled back into a short bun. He was dressed in a dark suit that failed to hide the fact that he was built like a tank, amber eyes scanning the parking lot. Looking for them.
Red took a deep breath before pulling on his coat. “Okay.” he breathed out, readjudting his ponytail one last time. “Let’s do this.”
“Are you ready?”
“Nope. Let’s go.”
The two bundled out of the car, Xiaotian gripping his bouquet tight. Together they headed towards Red’s parents. In a walk that both felt too long and too short, they were at the sidewalk. The two elders turned and he felt a shiver run down his spine. DBK looked… not pleased. But Iron Fan had the same look on Xiaojiao’s face whenever she was mentally planning to gut someone. Red came to a stop and Xiaotian mirrored him.
“Mother. Father. My apologies for being late.” Red’s tone was formal, apologetic.
His mother stepped forward, the gutting look replaced by some kind of look that was too cold to be maternal. “We were wondering where you were,” Iron Fan said, cupping Red’s face. And then she was squishing his cheeks. “My sweet useless boy.” Before Xiaotian could say something, she was turning to him. The look was back. “And this must be Qi Xiaotian.”
“Yes!” Xiaotian said, trying to not be cowed. He held out his hand. “Red’s told me so much about you.” A lie, but one he hoped worked. Iron Fan considered his hand before shaking it. Her red-nailed grip was ridiculously strong. “I… hope you like flowers?” he managed out, holding out the bouquet.
Iron Fan took it, considering the flowers. “How sweet.” she said. Without another word, she turned. “Come on, let’s go before our table is given away.” The boys followed, not sure what else to do.
When their backs were turned, Xiaotian slid his hand into Red’s hand and squeezed it in a hopeful attempt at comfort.
Red squeezed it back.
Inside, the decor was elegant- one of the fanciest places Xiaotian had ever been in. Their hostess led them up a grand staircase, overlooking the rest of the restaurant, and to a round table with a lazy Susan tray in the center. “We hope you enjoy it.” she said, promising their waiter would be by soon. Xiaotian thanked her before looking down to realize Red had pulled out his chair. Across the table, DBK had done the same to Iron Fan, pushing her in.
Together, they opened their menus. “I think we will get our usual,” DBK said, his voice rough. Xiaotian nearly jumped at it, since the man hadn’t said a word. “Do you have any thoughts, Xiaotian?”
He glanced at the menu, trying to figure out what would be best to say. The menu had been online and he had given it a quick scan ahead, but Red’s parents were leaving him floundering. “Do you have any recommendations?” he finally managed out.
Iron Fan’s grin, cold and cruel, showed he had mistepped.
In the end, it felt like they had ordered the spiciest things on the menu for their main courses. Xiaotian resisted a scream and the waiter had a pitying look on his face. So did DBK, much to his surprise. Now, all that was left to do was wait for the first course.
“So, Xiaotian,” Iron Fan said, all her attention on him. “What do you study?”
School. He could do school. “I’m doing a painting and graphic design major.” Xiaotian said, trying to sound confident. “I’m working on a webcomic idea. But if that doesn’t work out, I’m planning to go into museum work.” He had worked with his dads to figure out this backup plan, just in case.
“Oh, really.” The waiter returned to pour dark red wine into their wine glasses. Iron Fan took a sip. “What is your webcomic about?” Next to him, Red stiffened. Xiaotian stiffened as well.
“It’s… about my dad.” he finally squeaked out.
Iron Fan stiffened but this time DBK leaned forward in interest. “How is Wukong?” he said. “I haven’t heard much since my… return.” And there was another fact- they used to be friends. If things had been different, Xiaotian probably would’ve grown up with Red. “I only heard he adopted a son.”
“He’s married.” Xiaotian squeaked.
The dinner did not get better from there. 
When the food arrived, there was a glass of water that came with it for Xiaotian (which seemed to be the only mercy), and Iron Fan and DBK seemed to laser-focus on Red. It didn’t seem to matter that he was there, their words were cold, casual, and cruel as they picked at things here and there, no matter how trivial.
Finally, the dessert course was done, the check arrived, and DBK paid. “Remember your grades.” Iron Fan said when DBK’s credit card was returned. Without another word or an actual goodbye, she was standing and she and her husband were leaving. Red shuddered the minute they were out of view.
“That went well.” he finally managed out.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t much help.” Xiaotian said, not sure what else to say. At least Xiaojiao’s parents tried, or at least didn’t have their issues in front of him. “I didn’t expect…”
“Nobody expects my parents, Noodle Boy. Let’s go home.”
The ride back was in exhausted silence. “I have mochi.” Xiaotian mumbled out when they parked. “Want some?” He needed something to eat after trying to not burn his tongue off and he really didn’t want to leave Red alone.
“...yeah.”

Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across from May 3 to May 30, although some may be older than that. 
I am out of town June 10-16, so I cannot predict when the next edition will come out, but I will do my best to make it before the June trip. I’ve recently narrowed my reading list so that I can get through it more quickly and post these more often. If you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know! 
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES 
If you had your entire promoted listing budget eaten up by clicks on an item with “shoe” in the searchable keywords, contact Etsy to make sure you will be refunded. 
Etsy was accidentally suspending some shops for not using Etsy Payments, but they are in ineligible countries. Some but not all drop ship or use fulfillment in countries with Etsy Payments, but that doesn’t appear to explain all the errors. 
Mailchimp launches a new marketing platform that integrates multiple marketing needs, not just emails. Pricing will stay the same for existing customers for the time being. 
On the same topic, here is a study of various email services, and their different deliver-ability rates. 
Etsy is being sued after a child dies, strangled by an amber necklace bought on Etsy. [video & article] This is getting a fair amount of media attention. Not covered in many stories is the fact that the daycare employees didn’t call 911 at first, and the day home had more infants that day than they were licensed for.  
Better media attention: disappointed in the long delay for the introduction of the Harriet Tubman $20 bill in the US, an Etsy seller designed a stamp buyers can use to cover up Jackson’s face with Tubman’s. “Harriet Tubman” is a trending search on Etsy frequently since these articles, so this media coverage is really bringing traffic to the site.
Amazon is now using packing machines in a few of its warehouses that replace 12 workers each. They have other warehouse automation, too, & just started work on their hub at the Cincinnati airport. If you need any more evidence that diversification is the key to successful businesses, remember that they make the biggest chunk of their profit on their cloud services. 
ETSY NEWS 
This year, Etsy’s Maker Cities program (US only) has joined up with Mastercard for their grants. Applications are due July 3, and there is a webinar on June 3 with more info and instructions. [links in article]
They’s also extended their Design Awards submission deadline to June 4. Check out their FAQ if you have any questions.  
Etsy released a summer update to their spring/summer trends guide, with some useful search data. Clothing shoppers are interested in vintage styles, “with Etsy searches for “70s” and ��90s” up 26% and 7% year over year.” I summarized the earlier report here.
In case you missed it, Etsy released their first quarter financial report for 2019, & I summarized it in the Etsy forum. 
In related news, Etsy ranks 3rd in USA Today's list of the top 20 fastest growing retailers in the world, even ahead of Amazon.
Some businesses are competing based on delivery speed, but Etsy is able to do well with much slower shipping. (That’s a nice feature in an article they didn’t write; not all good promotion is paid.)
