Shizuroth, part four.

Sephiroth's phone isn't a proper smartphone and has no internet, and he's being very brave about it.

Well, it has something. It is… kinda like a half-assed smartphone? Sorta. It's like that old flip phone his grandfather used to use - probably still does, if he's still alive, somewhere in another universe. It was more brick than a phone - no touchscreen, and the closest it got to any kind of smart features was running an email app, somehow. Sephiroth's phone is a bit like it. It has email - or just mail, apparently. It also has tutorials? Which is useful. Also online shopping? But no apps, no search function, no internet, no wikis, no websites, nothing. It doesn't seem to have photo or video options either - but apparently it keeps track of all his missions.

It's like somehow people invented most of everything that goes into a smartphone - but no one got around to inventing the internet, or anything like it. What a waste!

The tutorials are useful, admittedly, though they're more like manuals, really. Not like cultivation manuals, sadly, more like user manuals. "How to use your PHS" and "what key card opens what floor" and "missions, what are missions" and "materia, what is it and how does it work". There's dozens and dozens of tutorials on the phone, just like you might expect to find in a videogame that couldn't trust its users to remember how everything works. 

The mission roster is, uh. It's definitely something. There's categories, subcategories, levels, and then under those there's info and completion status. And Sephiroth, apparently, does a lot of missions. Like. A lot. He kinda despairs at the idea of having to keep up with it, because it looks like Sephiroth is a workaholic. Though, thankfully, half of the missions are training, experiments in the labs, or experimental training. Still! Isn't he supposed to be the Big Bad? Why is he working so hard?!

The shops' menu on the phone, though very bare bones and lacking any pictures, has his heart leaping with joy - as does the adjacent menu detailing Sephiroth's wallet situation. Which is… very good. Like, Shen Qingqiu wasn't exactly short on change either, he was the second Peak Lord of the most powerful sect in the world - but comparing the Gil Sephiroth has to the price of stuff in the various shops listed on his phone…

Sephiroth has that fuck you money. Guess that's what you get from being a workaholic Big Bad, the strongest and scariest in the evil dystopian planet-sucking mega corporation! You get money. And lots of it.

… Which, along with the details of all the clothing stores on his phone, makes his wardrobe situation even sadder, doesn't it? He should've definitely been able to afford a coat that actually fit him.

Ultimately though, what he figures to be most useful is the mail. There's a lot of it, and it looks like mailing lists are all the rage these days. Because Sephiroth's barely got anything else in his inbox.

News mailing list, SOLDIER mailing list, Shinra mailing list - professor Hojo telling him to go to the labs - another news mailing list, Shinra business mailing list, Wutai News mailing list - Genesis telling him to meet him for a spar - another mailing list, mailing list, mailing list - urgent meeting with Director Lazard - and some more mailing lists.

There are not that many personal messages, honestly. A few requests for a spar, and that's about it. Is that all he does for fun? What is Sephiroth, Liu Qingge 2.0? All he does is work and spar! Just skimming through his schedule makes him feel exhausted.

At least thanks to the mailing lists - and phone's bare bones calendar app - he'd figured where he's at, story-wise. Pre-Crisis Core, pre-Genesis' whole thing, pre… just about everything he remembers from each game.

Wutai war is still going on. And, rather distressingly, Sephiroth has a lot of Wutai missions coming up.

That's… not ideal.

Resting the phone against his lips in thought like he once held a fan, he sighs and tries to think it through. 

There's a squeak as the other SOLDIER steps out of the stall. Must've been the door hinges. "Sir," the SOLDIER says, carefully.

"Mn," he answers and tries to look as Sephiroth-like as he can while also projecting an aura of don't talk to me, I don't even know your name at the man. It works, because the man clearly doesn't want to talk to him.

It's very useful, having a villain halo.

The SOLDIER washes his hands like he can't wait to get away and then hesitates at the door. "Sir, I - there's someone -" the SOLDIER says, tentatively and then flounders at his slow blink. "Someone will be here soon."

With that said, the SOLDIER flees before he can think of a suitably Sephiroth-like answer.

Someone will be here soon? …Okay? Why? 

Making a face, he looks around in confusion and notices that one of the bathroom lights is burned out.

Oh, someone will be here for the light? Right, of course, he's the scary Big Bad here, can't subject the scary Big Bad to a less than stellar environment. Heh, guess that's an upgrade of sorts!

He… really didn't want it. 

It's all rather concerning, really. What is he actually supposed to do here? Go on missions, train, clad himself in barely fitting leather with a ridiculous amount of buckles, and go to war? Over building a life-sucking factory? By a vaguely western, very unsubtle Big Oil Allegory, at that. In what was a vaguely Chinese-coded land, too. The whole thing was very iffy, from what he remembers! He doesn't want to get involved!

And then what is he supposed to do, play out Sephiroth's life to its fiery, insane conclusion? Resurrect and then attempt to destroy the world?! Like all the good Big Bads of old! But he isn't even sure when that is supposed to happen! The timeline in these games is super vague!

At least with PIDW there was a very clear end goal, ah! It was awful and trying to survive had given him grey hairs, but there was a clear forward momentum and an end point! If he survived past it, then… then he won? Maybe?

He hadn't survived past it, though.

He'd died.

… Again.

Closing his eyes, he sighs against Sephiroth's phone, shaking his head. Depressing, depressing, it's so depressing! He'd really grown to like his life as Shen Qingqiu too! All his cute disciples, his books on Qing Jing Peak, his art works, all the things he'd got… all the things he'd done… the friends he'd made…

And Binghe…

Ah, his sweet, terrifying Black Lotus. As scary as Binghe had been towards the end, he's really sad he wouldn't be able to see Binghe grow into his own! Reading about the protagonist growing stronger and overcoming all obstacles had been his favourite part. And he'd rather been looking forward to watching it. Safely at a distance, mind you, disguised in another, unknown, body, under a new name and everything. Because if Binghe found out he survived…

Well.

Probably just as well. This is a new world and maybe, just maybe, he can now -

i love Aquarium Hobby but it sucks how steep the learning curve is. here are some things i wish i knew when i was depressed/homesick/heartbroken/in college/stressed out of my mind and couldn't keep my fish alive:

don't listen to anyone in a big box store. go to a local aquarium shop. or online forums.

bigger tank is better. a larger volume of water is easier to keep parameters stable in #chemistry

don't change your filter media. it's a lie. every time you change it you are restarting your cycle

go get one of those giant cut to size aquarium media foam block things. cut a piece out and stick it in your filter. now you have an instant cycle if you ever have to set up a new tank in a hurry

old credit cards are the world's best algae scrapers

stable water parameters are more important than textbook perfect ones (this is for like, pH and hardness. your ammonia readings should still be 0)

low tech plants like mosses, java ferns, anubias, etc will make your life easier and your fish happier

seachem prime is hands down the best water conditioner on the market

test strips are fine. they aren't as fine tuned as a liquid tests but if your tank is cycled and stable they're enough to alert you when something goes wrong

when you put someone else in charge of your fish when you go on vacation, put their food in a pill box. now they don't have to guess how much a "small pinch" is

do not buy a fish that cannot fit in your tank fully grown. the voice in your head saying "oh i'll upgrade before my beloved goldfish gets too big" is the devil talking

First, the Dish Granted series was started when gold leaf burgers were novel, now it's seen as tone deaf (for obvious reasons) it should have shifted to something like interviews with people who make that kind of food or local businesses (like parmesan cheese shops in Parma, Italy) or the history of food (like talking about the history of modern Native American slavery on Californian wine vinyards). Not to mention the untapped potential of Food Fraud topics. Either shift it, or scrap it. Any data analyst or chronically online person could tell you that.

Second, why did you keep "anyone can afford $6 a month" in? Are the editors asleep at the wheel? Are they overworked? What is going on? You know damn well to not make generalizations about what people can afford. That's NEVER a good idea, especially when you KNOW (because YT gives you analytics) that most of your viewers are young (16/18-30/35 range, I'd guess) who probably, either 1, are still in school and either arent paid well/dont have jobs OR 2, arent paid well and tired of people's shit, like people who own businesses talking about "tough financial decisions." To them, Watcher isn't going to look different from the other people talking like that, because this was so sudden, with no input from fans, and in the video you hear shit like "anyone can afford [X]." To be frank, it wouldn't really matter what the amount is, because that generalization goes against the message they have stood by for years. THAT is a slap in the face.

Third, what are yall doing with the budgeting? Every artist has a right to make art that they are proud of. Every artist deserves to have their work seen if they so choose. Every artist deserves to make a living. HOWEVER, there are MANY options online when it comes to making money, especially on YT. You could get into marketing, data analysis, expanding your demographic, looking at what people are interested in right now VS what will stand the test of time (not gold leaf burgers), etc.

You have to either have these skills, develop these skills, or hire someone to do it for you. It's understandable that you would want a team behind the production, but I find +25 employees to be WAY too many people, especially in LA. Bailey Sarian has a Dark History section on her YT (and Spotify podcast) where she has hired historians to help make sure her episodes are as accurate as possible. You've caught heat before from Puppet History's missing & incorrect info, you should do the same. She has about three (3) "intermissions" per episode for ad breaks. I never see anyone complain. People WOULD listen to yall talk for that long (+1 hour videos), tbh, though that's not necessary.

Why are yall out here with Teslas, expensive food, new gear, scripts (where there weren't scripts before, PH is different, that makes sense), and "better than TV" level sets??? They have a right to feel betrayed, especially when there are better options (like Nebula or consulting with Theorist Media).

you know these small and flat disposable rubber hair bands used for small ties and braids?

i specifically took the above photos from western sites' image results, and they dont have a specific name other than mini elastic rubber bands and other such variations.

what i find interesting is some filipinos specifically refer to them as "sanrio". here's some proof from a local online shopping site :3

i havent found detailed research on the subject but it's fairly obvious to me as someone who's always lived here, so i'll try to explain:

you know the phenomenon where a brand turns into an associated product's common noun, e.g. tupperware? that seems to be what happened here, except.. even if sanrio (the brand) commonly produces hair accessories to appeal to their target demographic, these colorful rubber bands seem too.. generic. non-filipino site results for "sanrio hair band" commonly showed these (this is a mix of authentic and bootleg products):

i also failed to find any official sanrio (brand) packaging that might have sold these rubber bands specifically, and even if they did (or do) at some point, i have a plausible theory for why i doubt they're directly involved.

"sanrio" becoming a common noun for these rubber bands in the philippines likely means it was not sanrio (the brand)'s doing at all; actual branded kids' accessories and toys, regardless of their price, are seen as something for the middle and upper class, because they're often sold in malls and recognizable retail stores. they're also only found in supermarkets that almost exclusively have no off-brand products.

it's far more likely that this happened through the abundance of bootleg and off-brand accessories available through sidewalk / street vendors and the less high-end supermarkets, as well as a few shops found in malls (although these are not as common or are a bit more pricey); sanrio (the brand)'s likeness is within the same demographic that loves these hair bands, and these products are often sold with off-color hello kitty prints, among other known cartoons (see dora below) or just generally cutesy designs to attract young girls. the connection likely spurred on from there because of how unique the sound of "sanrio" is as a word by itself, and i guess we ended up using it to refer to a very specific kind of hair tie that elementary and junior high girls love using :]

i assume you're PH based aswell if your brother got our shirts, so i'm gonna link some resources and basic advice under the cut-

i'd be glad to help where i can, though my basic advice is to just start.. i began selling merch with dann (friend who made the pokemon shirts) when we were just classmates in college, and we started at small anime events selling small prints with our table falling apart hahajkfghjk.. but even back then everyone was so friendly, so it was very encouraging !! the art community is very sweet and there is a lot of support for you !!

first, you'll want to find your market! this will determine what conventions you want to apply to and what kind of merch you want to make. do you want to make fanart, or original art? are you doing mostly stickers, tote bags, or anime merch? or do you just want to sell online?

second, what is your budget for merch production? starting out is expensive, personally my funds always circulate between profit and spending on restocks again. this will determine what kind of merch you can make, and then you expand later! i started out with only stickers and art prints, then keychains, and then bags and t-shirts later on!

if you're into original art, some events i recommend for beginners are Patrons of the Arts, Buzzart, Komiket. they have regular events throughout the year. if you're into stickers, there's Stickercon and Sticky Expo!

if you're into fan art, you can try ozinefest (sales are slower but table cost is cheaper), or if you have enough money, split for cosplay ph events

of course these aren't the only events, though they're the ones i regularly attend! if you have a more specialized market, there are dedicated cons like philifur, the grand lason, pokecon, etc. for all of these events you'll either have to keep your eyes peeled for table openings on their pages (rare), or email them to be added to their mailing list so you'll be told when they're open

if you don't have any suppliers yet, you can apply to join Artist Alley Group Order on facebook ! people regularly post about suppliers for all kinds of merchandise that you can look up. if you want any recommendations you can message me off-anon!

as for the merchandise itself, this varies person to person. my market is more obscure fanart that other people don't sell, and cutesy original art! i sell big illustrations as prints, though other people report on having a hard time selling prints. it depends on the content and art style. you'll have to experiment and see, or look around other shops to see what sells! visiting art markets yourself is also a huge help, to see the market, make friends in the artph community, and support artists!

i'd recommend starting out with stickers and prints- they're the cheapest to produce, and people often buy stickers because of their low price at cons. when you get more familiar with the market you can try going onto more expensive things to reproduce!

It was a lovely spring day at Hogwarts. With the year ending and summer break around the corner, everyone was so invested in finishing their exams. However, you can only do so much studying before you grow too bored. This led to you and the Marauders setting up a magic camera outside next to the Whomping Willow.

It was decided that you would pick everyone's outfits for the shoot, Lilly would do everyone's makeup, Sirius would knick the camera from his family home, and the other boys would convince the house elves to 'donate' some food for your afternoon out. Once everyone reconvened and got ready, the photoshoot could begin.

Picture after picture was taken, everyone goofing off and laughing at one another poses. Some photos were nicely done, whereas most were just you guys being goofy. As the photoshoot ended and your stomach growled, James walked up to you nervously. "Hey, Y/N, could we take a couple more pictures? Just me and you." hi, i adore your customs so much! ^^ i've been having trouble finding clear eye chips that fit 1998 furbies properly (14mm ones weren't thick enough and fell off even with glue). i was wondering where you got your eye chips from, or if you have a different process

Unfortunately almost every glass eye chips I have found online have had some issues. 🫠🫠🫠 So there isn't a "perfect" purchase out there. They are either over priced, came broken, or were too thick where the eyelids couldn't shut.

However, these were the best and closest options on Amazon I could find, they are the closest size (they're a little small but it's not noticeable) and most weren't too thick, but it only is for about 20 of them/purchase and that's if all of them are the right height;

With glass bead replacements I always make sure to place the glass beads into the sockets before gluing just to make sure that they fit and aren't too thick. Typically though you can tell just by looking at them and I recommend always doing this even with the above link, because each piece is a different size and some may be a lil' too big!

But honestly? Sometimes I don't want to bother using glass ones because like you had said they are hard to stay glued in. So what you can also do is soak the original eyecaps in some acetone! I soak mine for a few hours, take them out, and with a Qtip I lightly brush off the paint. Once the Qtip isn't releasing anymore of the paint you put it back in the acetone and wait. It takes some time and I learned there's about 4 layers of paint to go through. Then once it's all clear you just wash it with soap and water and let air dry. They should be clear and have some of the line engravings in them still which can make a cool eye texture for the furby! This also will reduce waste! So I highly recommend doing this method as well if the eyes weren't damaged by removal!

I did this method for my Succubus Furby Aggie and I absolutely love the line engravings;

And as for glue I am still figuring out the best method! I know that either glue you use you should always seal the eye design with something. Either clear spray paint finish or mod podge just to make sure that the design won't be damaged by the glue from the eyechip (Because no air can go between it so this sometimes causes the eye design to bleed and it makes for a mess under the eyechips).

Modpodge works great to attach the eyechip to the eye sockets however I have had better luck with either Super Glue GEL or Hot Glue for gluing the eye chips to the eye pattern! Hot glue it just hard to not make a mess with and you have to be fast or it'll dry and be too thick. I always place a small drop in the center of the eye design and then quickly put the eye chip ontop and push it down. This spreads the glue across the pattern for a clearer look. But be careful to not burn yourself and if you are using glass chips they also can get really hot. Also air bubbles can be your enemy so make sure there are enough glue sticks that won't cause it to sputter out and make air bubbles!

But realistically. My fav is still Super Glue Gel. It just gives a smoother look and dries quickly without moisture. So for me personally I do the following method;

Mod podge to seal the design -> Let Dry -> Super Glue Gel drop on design and then press eye chip onto it -> Let it dry over night -> Mod podge/Super Glue whole eye chip w/ design into sockets. -> Let cure for a day -> Use alcohol to clean off any clouding on top of eyechip that may occur from the super glue.
