Part-Time Maid Services in Qatar: A Convenient Solution for Modern Living
As life in Qatar becomes increasingly fast-paced, many residents find themselves juggling demanding careers, family responsibilities, and social commitments. With little time left for household chores, the demand for part-time maid services has surged. These services offer a practical solution for those seeking to maintain a clean and organized home without the need for a full-time commitment. In this article, we will explore the benefits of part-time maid services in Qatar, how they work, and what to consider when choosing the right service for your needs.
The Growing Demand for Part-Time Maid Services
Qatar, with its booming economy and cosmopolitan lifestyle, attracts a diverse population of expatriates and locals alike. Many residents, particularly working professionals and busy families, struggle to keep up with household tasks amidst their hectic schedules. This is where part-time maid services come into play. These services allow individuals to hire professional cleaners for a few hours or days each week, providing flexibility and convenience.
The demand for part-time maid services is also fueled by Qatar's strict labor laws and the cost associated with employing full-time domestic help. Many families prefer the flexibility of hiring part-time maids to avoid the legal obligations and financial burdens of full-time employment. Additionally, part-time maid services cater to a wide range of needs, from regular cleaning and laundry to specialized tasks like deep cleaning or post-party clean-up.
How Part-Time Maid Services Work
Part-time maid services in Qatar are typically offered by cleaning companies that employ trained professionals. These companies provide a variety of services tailored to meet the specific needs of their clients. The process of hiring a part-time maid is straightforward:
Contact a Cleaning Company: Most cleaning companies in Qatar offer online booking or phone consultations. Clients can discuss their requirements, including the frequency and type of cleaning needed.
Choose a Schedule: Part-time maid services are highly flexible. Clients can choose from a one-time service, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly options, depending on their needs.
Service Agreement: Before the service begins, the client and the company will agree on the terms, including the tasks to be performed, the duration of each visit, and the cost.
Service Delivery: On the agreed-upon schedule, the maid will arrive at the client's home to perform the cleaning tasks. Most companies ensure that their staff is well-trained, background-checked, and equipped with the necessary cleaning supplies.
Payment and Feedback: Payment is typically made after each service, and clients are encouraged to provide feedback to ensure continuous improvement.
Benefits of Part-Time Maid Services
Part-time maid services offer several benefits that make them an attractive option for residents in Qatar:
1. Flexibility
One of the primary advantages of part-time maid services is the flexibility they offer. Clients can customize the frequency and scope of the cleaning based on their specific needs and budget. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who may only require occasional help or those with fluctuating schedules.
2. Cost-Effective
Hiring a full-time maid can be expensive, especially when considering the costs associated with visas, accommodation, and other benefits required by law. Part-time maid services, on the other hand, provide a more affordable alternative, allowing clients to pay only for the services they need.
3. Professionalism and Reliability
Reputable cleaning companies in Qatar employ trained and experienced staff who are knowledgeable in the latest cleaning techniques and use high-quality products. This ensures that clients receive a consistently high standard of service. Additionally, these companies often conduct thorough background checks on their employees, providing peace of mind to clients.
4. Focus on Specialized Cleaning
Part-time maid services can also be tailored to meet specific cleaning needs. Whether it's a deep cleaning before a special event or regular maintenance of hard-to-reach areas, clients can request specialized services that may not be feasible with a full-time maid.
Choosing the Right Service Provider
When selecting a part-time maid service in Qatar, it's essential to consider the following factors:
Reputation: Look for companies with positive reviews and a strong reputation for quality and reliability.
Range of Services: Ensure that the company offers the specific services you need, whether it's regular cleaning, laundry, or specialized tasks.
Transparency: The company should provide clear pricing and terms of service, with no hidden fees.
Insurance: Check if the company has insurance coverage to protect against any potential damages or accidents during the cleaning process.
Conclusion
Part-time maid services in Qatar are an ideal solution for busy residents seeking a clean and organized home without the commitment of hiring full-time help. With flexible scheduling, cost-effective pricing, and professional service, these services cater to the diverse needs of Qatar's residents. By choosing a reputable provider, you can enjoy a hassle-free cleaning experience that allows you to focus on what matters most in your life.

MY TIME DURING COVID
It was four years ago, when the world came to a standstill thanks to the presence of a virus called COVID-19. I was in Leeuwarden when I heard about this virus. It was present in China at the time so nobody in my university was worried about it. But as time passed by, the virus started to spread across several countries, people started to get concerned.
I was away from my parents, so we were in constant communication as to whether I should go back to Qatar or stay in Leeuwarden. But as the cases started to rise in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, we thought it would be safer for me to go back to Qatar. On the 17th of March 2020, I travelled from Leeuwarden to Qatar, but then another problem raised. Qatar was not allowing entry to anyone who was not a Qatar Citizen and at that moment, we decided that the best thing to do if for me and my mother to travel to India and stay in my relative’s home. In our opinion, this was the best option as we thought the lockdown would not last more than a month. So, we travelled to Mumbai while my father stayed in Qatar where my mother’s sister had vacated her house so we could stay there and quarantine.
My mother and I struggled in the initial stages as we always had to wear masks and gloves while going downstairs to buy fruits, vegetables, and other essentials for the house. My mother was away from my father which was very difficult for her and much like the world, my mother and I found entertainment through social media and TikTok reels. The chores in the house were distributed between my mother and me as I oversaw washing dishes, watering plants and laundry while she was doing the cooking and the cleaning of the house. Matters got worse when the lockdown was extended for another month and none of our family members could stay with us at the time. Outside our house, all we could hear was negativity as nobody had any clue as to when the lockdown was going to end.
Two months into the lockdown, things felt like they were easing because people were allowed to travel within their state, which meant our family could stay with us. This made things a little better for my mother and me as we had people to help us and keep us company. Another advantage of the family staying with us was there was someone to help us with the chores at home. Another positive was that sports matches were coming back, albeit in an empty stadium. It looked like we were starting to get some sort of respite. But just then, there was the news about Sushant Singh Rajput committing suicide and because people were already frustrated with the lockdown, this news just pushed people over the edge. Social media became a negative place, and the next month became difficult for everyone.
On the studies front, I was attending classes and writing exams online and this was a different challenge for all of us as a lot of us were in different parts of the world in different time zones. We had to give our written examinations with the cameras turned on in our laptops to make sure that we were not cheating. I was working on group projects with my team members who were in different parts of the world, and this had its disadvantages like having to agree on a particular which was not always easy due to the time difference and there was the problem of the internet connection which was not always stable.
Five moths into the lockdown, we got news that we would be allowed to travel back to Qatar and when we heard this, my mother and I were ecstatic when we heard this news. We had to wear a mask and a face shield while travelling in the plane but that did not matter to us because we just wanted to get back home. When we landed in Qatar, we had another challenge where People had to quarantine for one week inside a room before they were allowed to go home and it was a lot to take for my mother and me as we had already been though a lot.
On the 7th day, we were allowed to travel back home and the three of us were finally together after almost half a year. This was an experience that I will never forget and hopefully never want to go through ever again.

Key Considerations for Renting Short-Term Furnished Apartments in Doha

In today’s increasingly digital world, businesses of all sizes recognise the need to adopt digital payments to stay competitive and meet the needs of their customers. The use of digital payments is also becoming prevalent in Qatar, with more and more businesses adopting these convenient and efficient methods of digital payment in Qatar by availing solutions such as payment gateway, webstore payment link and POS machines in Qatar, amongst others.
In layperson’s terms, digital payments, also known as electronic payments, refer to using electronic means, such as smartphones and computers, to make and receive payments. These can be in credit or debit card transactions, digital wallet payments, or other such payments. They have become increasingly popular in recent years. For a good reason, they offer a convenient and secure way for businesses to accept customers’ payments and help streamline the payment process. If you haven’t already done so, here are a few reasons why you should consider adopting online payments in Qatar for your business:
1)Increased convenience for customers: Digital payments make paying for goods and services easily without carrying around cash. This is particularly useful for businesses that operate online or have a mobile payment option, as customers can make purchases from anywhere at any time. With Sadad, you can offer greater convenience to your customers as they can make payments quickly and easily without having to deal with the hassle of carrying cash or writing checks. This can be especially useful for online businesses, as customers can make purchases from the comfort of their homes. Whether you own a restaurant, grocery stores or any shops or are a doorstep delivery service such as laundry, car cleaning and repairing, courier and logistic services – no matter the scale or type of business, digital payments are bound to bring in more convenience for your customers.
2)Improved security: Digital payments are generally more secure than traditional payment methods, using encrypted technology to protect customer information. This means that customers can trust that their personal and financial information is safe when they make a digital payment. Sadad is a PCI-DSS-compliant company that ensures your transactions are encrypted and processed through secure servers, reducing the risk of fraud or theft. With advanced encryption technology, you get protection against fraud and hacking, which further helps reduce the risk of financial losses for your business. A manual register or accounts can be stolen for once, but payments recorded digitally ensure that all data is safe.
3)Accurate Data Tracking: Digital payment systems can help streamline your business’s financial processes, reducing the time and effort required to manage your finances. This can free up valuable time and resources that can be used to focus on other essential aspects of your business. Sadad, with its merchant dashboard and tracking tools across solutions for online payments in Qatar, brings better tracking and record-keeping to your business. Collecting payments from different channels is a hassle for merchants, along with managing finance. With digital payments, you will get reconciled transaction data, reducing human intervention and nullifying manual reconciliation efforts. Our built-in tracking and record-keeping tools can help you keep track of sales and customer information that is also error-proof as no bookkeeping and manual intervention are needed.
4)Increased sales: Digital payments can make it easier for customers to make purchases, increasing sales for your business. For example, you own a Clothing Boutique that displays your apparel, and a passerby down the road sees your apparel on display and decides to walk in. The pricing is more than what they have in cash. In this case, you can easily accept payments via cards or QR codes if you have a POS machine. Digital payments can help you boost sales like the scenario mentioned above because customers are more likely to make impulsive purchases when they can easily and quickly pay for them using their digital devices. As Sadad offers a host of these services, ranging from a smart online store to a payment gateway to a POS system in Qatar and more – you have an increased probability of being capable of accepting these payments at the right time.
5)Improved accuracy: Digital payment systems can help reduce human error risk, as transactions are automatically processed and recorded. This helps ensure that your business can accurately track its financial transactions and maintain an accurate record of its financial health. Sadad’s easy-to-understand analytics and tracking tools that come with its solutions can be handy for businesses that need to keep detailed records for tax or accounting purposes. Businesses with a large number of transactions through different sources, such as insurance and education industries, along with businesses that offer sales in the shop and doorstep delivery, can easily track transactions as all of these transactions will get recorded digitally.
6)Better cost savings: With digital payment, no physical movement is required – neither do you need to go to your customer, nor do they need to be physically present in order to make the payment. This leads to cost savings as neither of the parties can travel to any location. For example, even if you have a small set-up and are selling paintings from your home or studio, you can showcase your artwork online (say via the Sadad Store link generator). The customer can purchase your artwork digitally without having to come down to your studio or you having to host an exhibition. This time can hence be used to take up other imperative business tasks.
There are many compelling reasons to adopt digital payments in your business. They offer increased convenience and security for your business and customers and can help improve the overall customer experience. Whether you operate online or have a physical storefront, digital payments can make the payment process smoother and more efficient. Sadad makes it possible to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of your business through its Online payment solutions in Qatar, including:

Preparing For Our Trip
If you’ve reached the end of my last post, you’ll remember that I shared with you how long it took us to plan that trip. Six months.
Tumblr media
Yup, it took us six months--from the time we booked our flights to the day we leave for Brussels, Belgium.
We were lucky to have gotten our tickets at the height of Qatar Airways’ end-of-the-year promo. Well I’m not really sure if it’s an end-of-the-year promo, but a roundtrip ticket from Manila to Brussels and back just cost us about USD 650. I don’t know if you’ll agree, but to me, that’s cheap AF. And that’s rounded up! A ticket to and fro Brussels was like USD 630, but meh… let’s just say the extra 20 dollars was for the coffee we drank while waiting at both Manila and Brussels airports! Or as payment for the free (Qatar Airways lounge realness!) breakfast we got at the Qatar Airways business class lounge at the Doha Hamad International Airport.
HOLD UP, BUSINESS LOUNGE?!?! I’ll make another post about my FIRST business class lounge experience so stay tuned for that!
Anyway, so we booked our tickets around December 2016. Or early January 2017? I’m not really sure. But what I’m sure of is that by December 2016 the four of us were sure that we were going to Europe after our college graduation.
And, boy, we did!
While some of us were doing undergraduate thesis (I didn’t), writing 10 papers for a class, practicing for our final Philo/Theo orals, we were also gathering all the necessary documents to acquire a French visa. We were gonna get a French visa because we were gonna stay in France the longest (10-11 days, I think). We could have gotten a Belgian visa (Belgian… is that right? To me it sounds like I’m getting fries or waffles, hahaha!) because that’s our point of entry, but I was told by our travel agent that a visa to France is actually much easier to acquire. So we made sure that we were gonna stay in France the longest.
Tumblr media
Outside the Louvre
Actually, thinking of how to stay the longest in France wasn’t a problem for us--or for me, as I was the one who planned the itinerary (our routes). I knew I wanted to visit Spain as well, and in the name of cheapness, we had to stop by other cities in the south of France to get from Paris to Barcelona. So, to get from the capital of France to Barcelona and then to Italy, we had to make stops in Toulouse, Marseille, and Nice.
To give you an idea of our route, see this photo:
Tumblr media
THE famed itinerary for our one-month backpacking trip across Western Europe
I just knew that Nice was a beautiful beach city. I’ve seen a couple of posts on Instagram; celebrities in Nice, Cannes, and St. Tropez. I thought, if we have to make stops anyway, might as well visit Nice! But damn. Nice was just something else. And so were Toulouse and Marseille.
Tumblr media
Me and my friends at the beach in Nice, France #VeryGoodVeryNICE
I have never heard of Toulouse. Marseille, I only know because Dr. Jose Rizal passed it at some point in his Europe ~expedition~ (if I remember correctly from my History class in college). So when we got there, we really had no expectations. We were there for two days max, actually, but after that trip, we were so bitin. If I were to translate bitin in English, it’s “not enough” or “hungover”. Hungover because those little towns were beautiful! The people were so nice. And even if they were kind of sketchy (we were four girls walking from the train station to your Airbnb in the middle of the night so we thought it was sketchy), the scenery and camaraderie of the people truly made up for it.
Anyway, back to our itinerary!
Tumblr media
Just some of the perks you get from taking trains: #ViewsForDayz
After figuring out where we’re gonna go, we looked for the famous landmarks in each city. We also booked cheap tours and tickets--like city passes in Barcelona and Berlin (you know those hop-on/hop-off buses, yeah we got those). We also looked for Airbnbs that gave us the best deals: free breakfast, with washer and dryer, and the likes. We were gonna be backpacking, which means we can’t bring a lot of clothes (or things) with us, so we needed places to live with washers and dryers to remain fresh and clean, haha!  It’s also a plus if it’s near the city! Oh, lawd. I remember our Airbnb in Zürich. We went down the wrong stop on our first day so we had to walk to our Airbnb and it was SO. FREAKING. FAR. At least the lake was near our place, and it was really really quiet there? That small town vibe, is what I’m saying. Or our Airbnb in Hoofddorp. It’s like 20-30 minutes away from Amsterdam, and we had to take another bus then walk (which was so freaking’ far from the stop as well) to our Airbnb. We had free breakfast there, though.
We’re also lucky to have booked Airbnbs with full kitchens. We were able to cook our own food (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). I’m forever indebted to Carrefour and Monop(rix), by the way.
Actually, most of the landmarks in Europe have no entrance fees. Unless it’s a museum, or a castle of some sort, then that’s when you’ll have to pay. In Paris, if you get a city + museum pass, you can get free rides to the subway/bus system PLUS free entrance to its many museums. For Marseille, for example, a tourist card gives you free bus rides and a free trip to Ile de Frioul, a nearby island. It also gives you free access to museums, free coffee/tea, free soap, and etc. A Milan tourist card, on the other hand, gives you free tram/bus rides, one free Uber ride, and more! I say tourist cards are worth your money, especially if you’re staying at a certain place for 48 hours or more.
Tumblr media
Ile de Frioul
With the hop-on/hop-off pass, which we got for Barcelona and Berlin, we basically just used it so we can see all the famous landmarks and go around the city in a short span of time. For Barcelona, however, we had to purchase tickets to get inside La Sagrada Família. But like in Berlin, we were there for less than 24 hours only, so we figured that the best way to see Berlin was through a tour bus. We were also able to go shopping… ayayay! And we were able to eat at one of the BEST restaurants in Berlin (and for cheap!), so I’d say we got a pretty sweet deal.
Meanwhile, securing our visas was a breeze, tbh. We applied for visas in April (after Holy Week). We could have applied sooner, but you can only submit your applications at least three months before your departure date. We were slated to leave in June, so we can’t submit it in January or February, even if we had already completed our documents. We would have submitted in March, but we all had to leave the country during Holy Week, and we didn’t wanna take a risk. If we had problems with the visa processing, we wanted to wait at least after we’ve come back from Holy Week break. After that break anyway, our next trip was to Europe.
Because we hired a travel agency to help us with our visa processing, we had to pay for the processing fee PLUS the visa fee. But if you’re going to do it yourself, you just have to pay for the visa fee. I think you can also submit your application online (not requiring an appearance before the embassy), but in our case, we went to VFS Global in Makati and submitted our documents there personally. VFS checked all our documents and they were the ones who sent it to the French embassy. I think it took about a week before we were granted a tourist visa and got our passports back.
Fast forward to one of the most difficult parts: a few days before our trip.
I bought a 44L backpack online from Cabin Zero. It’s orange, and pretty small compared to my friends’ backpacks, which were 60L! You might think filling a 44L backpack was easy. For me, however, it wasn’t. I had to really think about what to wear, what to bring, and all that crap. I mean, I was so used to bringing huge luggages! I used to bring the same number of tops and the same number of jeans and the same number of everything as the days that I’m going to be away. The same jacket on my photo at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Statue of Liberty? No thanks!
Tumblr media
That’s me in the middle with my orange backpack from Cabin Zero. I had to tie all my dirty clothes outside my backpack LMAO. (Thank God I brought a laundry bag, hahahaha! We did a round of laundry the night before, but I think I didn’t wash everything so yah...)
But that was me before. Oh, boy. How this trip changed me.
Because we were gonna go backpacking, we had to bring ONLY the essentials: a few neutral-colored tops, shorts, leggings, jeans, a dress… basically one or two of what I’d like to wear on my trip. I learned how to fold my underwear properly so they wouldn’t take a lot of space, how to mix and match the same pieces. But most of all, I learned to pack less. I think with this trip, I learned how to be less materialistic? I dunno. Again, maybe it’s just me, but after that trip, I don’t really think that much about clothes anymore. I used to go shopping all the time and have the latest trending pieces for myself, but now, I’ve learned to wear and wear again the same thing. I’ve learned to buy the classics; the essentials. I’ve learned that comfort really is better than trends. But don’t get me wrong. You can be comfortable and stylish (SWAGGY) at the same time.
Through the whole packing process, I think that’s when me and my friend spoke on the phone the most. “What are you gonna bring?”, “How many of this are you bringing?”, “Did you bring this?”, “Dude, I don’t know!”, “OMG, how do I fit all these in my bag?!”. Those were just some of the questions we had, and thankfully we’ve answered all of them.
Anyway, I think I’m ending my post now, but before that, I’m giving you guys a summary of what I’ve learned from planning and preparing for this trip (yay, tips!):
Pack light. Pack only what you need. Black, white, and gray shirts, leggings, denim shorts, a white OR black dress, slippers, and comfy white sneakers--all the clothes you’ll ever need. Five or six pairs of underwear. Three pairs of socks. Medium bottles of shampoo (so you won’t have to buy from there). Don’t think to much about fashion. Go for a minimalist yet polished look.
A 44L backpack is enough. Okay, I may or may not have bought an extra luggage in Amsterdam (but that was because I went shopping for my family? Hahaha!). But if you’re not one to bring home A LOT of goods, a 44L backpack is just right. With a 60L, you’ll have lots of space, but if it’s full, it’s gonna be a bit hard to take with you since you’ll be walking and walking and jumping on and off trains.
Book Airbnbs that give the best deals--free washer and dryer, free breakfast, a full kitchen, and close to the city center. But if you want to be in the city AND get the feel of the countryside, then go book an Airbnb that’s like 30 minutes away, haha! You can book hostels as well, but imo, Airbnbs are A LOT cheaper, especially if you’re traveling with a big group. And you’ll have your own place, meaning it’s a hundred times safer. Sure, you’ll get other awesome perks from living at hostels (you’ll meet fellow backpackers [and cute ones, lol], up your networking game, and etc.), but it’s a whole new city for you to discover… but meh! Your choice, really! Just make sure YOUR SAFETY IS YOUR PRIORITY.
That being said, allow me to reiterate that YOUR SAFETY IS YOUR PRIORITY. Don’t trust ANYONE that easily. Sure, go have fun and let loose a little, but make sure that you’re not out giving your personal details to just anyone. If you’re going home with someone… go to their place instead? LOL Or you know, just bring a taser and/or pepper spray and/or Swiss knife with you always! (Except for when you’re going to museums and stuff because that’s not allowed!)
Have extra copies of all your flight bookings, passport details, visa/s, accommodations, and tours (if applicable) in your backpack. Although I’m for being environmentally-friendly, you can’t be too sure. Have copies of everything IN YOUR PHONE and IN AN ENVELOPE hidden somewhere in your backpack. That way, when something happens (you lose your passport or whatever), you have proof of legal entry into Europe (or wherever).
Leave an extra copy to your family back home so they know where you’re going or where you’ll be in case of emergency. And last, but definitely not the least,
Take advantage of all the free stuff! Free landmarks, free perks from your tourist card, free museums, free EVERYTHING. But be safe, okay? Don’t trust people that easily (especially when it comes to free drinks), so use all those perks from government-accredited/esteemed providers.
Well, that’s it! They’re all I could think of for now. If I do think of more, I’ll be sure to update this post. :)
If you have anything to add, you can leave a comment or reblog this post with your comment! You can also message me privately; I’ll be happy to chat with you.
HAPPY PLANNING!

New from Jeff York on The Establishing Shot: OSCAR’S LIVE-ACTION SHORT NOMINEES CREATE PALPABLE TENSION
The live-action shorts that the Academy tends to nominate consistently veer towards the serious. Very serious. More and more so over the last few years. The subjects tend to be hot button issues like child murder, kidnapping, racism, bullying, and repressed sexuality. And those were just last year’s nominees. This year’s slate is exceedingly serious as well. They’re all a little dour, but at least they find pockets of hope in the telling.
NEFTA FOOTBALL CLUB (France)
The best of the lot this season is French writer/director Yves Piat’s story about two young boys in Tunisia who make a dramatic discovery. While riding on their moped to a dusty playground to join classmates for a game of football, Mohammed (Elatayef Dhaoui) and his younger brother Abdallah (Mohamed Ali Ayari) come upon a stray donkey out in the desert. The boys stop to investigate and find him loaded down with packets of white powder. Mohammed knows it’s drugs, but he tells his gullible sibling it’s mere laundry detergent. Soon, the two boys are heading back home with the drugs in tow, while the two owners of the drug mule wander the sands looking for their animal.
What makes this short so effective is its clever mix of emotions. There’s palpable tension when Mohammed tries to sell the stash to a couple of shady adults, yet the film buttresses light-hearted comedy right up against such dramatics. The scenes with the hapless Abdallah, who has his own ideas on what to do with the detergent, edge right up towards slapstick. Yet it all works. Spectacularly.
Usually, Academy shorts with a backdrop of drugs are harrowing. This one is quite hilarious. And it ends on one beauty of a sight gag that is one of the best closing shots of any film this year, long or short.
BROTHERHOOD (a co-production from Canada, Tunisia, Qatar, and Sweden)
A second short takes place in Tunisia and it’s written and directed by Meryam Joobeur. Tensions come to a head in the story when a young man returns home to his Tunisian family with his new Syrian bride. The brooding father (Mohamed Graaya) suspects that his son has joined ISIL and is most unwelcoming to the couple. He doesn’t like that she’s dressed in oppressive full niqab, and he’s already in a mood because one of his farm’s sheep was slaughtered by a roaming wolf.  Strong symbolism, certainly, although it is a bit on-the-nose.
This dark and gloomy 25-minute short won the award for Best Canadian Short at TIFF this past fall, but it might have trouble persuading Academy voters who will likely find this as bleak as it’s intended to be.  Still, it’s very effective filmmaking.
A SISTER (Belgium)
Filmmaker Delphine Girard has delivered a simple and taut tale about a kidnapping. Lasting only 16 minutes, we discover a terrified passenger (Selma Alaoui) in the backseat of a car, trying to negotiate with her kidnapper (Guillaume Duhesme) who is driving at night. She doesn’t have much standing but nonetheless peppers her captor with a request to call her sister. The woman explains it will actually help his getaway because it should lull her sister into complacence knowing all is well.
After a great deal of back and forth, her kidnapper finally relents. The woman, however, doesn’t call her sis. Instead, she dials up the 911 operator and proceeds to try to persuade her “in code” to call the cops.  It’s shrewd, audacious, and nerve-wracking. Just like it was intended to be.
SARIA (USA)
Based on a real-life incident at a Guatemalan orphanage in 2017, director Bryan Buckley’s 23-minute short is both terrifying and heartbreaking. A plucky and opinionated orphan teen named Saria (Estefania Tellez) doesn’t like being bullied by the male and female guards at the sanctuary. She figures that the safe home is anything but since it’s overrun with bugs, decay, and rapes happening left and right. Thus, Saria and her friends develop an ambitious plan to escape.
Their scheming involves staging a protest, a fake cafeteria fight, and a quick run into the nearby woods. After that, it’s 100 miles to the USA, but they’re brave and determined. Buckley does stellar work with this big and ambitious short.
THE NEIGHBORS’ WINDOW (USA)
Writer/director Marshall Curry’s dramedy is based on a true story that gained popularity on the podcast The Living Room a few years back. A married couple became obsessed with spying on their neighbors across the way when they discovered they enjoyed a very active sex life. Curry took that idea and turned it into a very clever riff on Hitchcock’s REAR WINDOW here.
Alli (Maria Dizzia) and her husband Jacob (Greg Keller) play the voyeurs, reveling in the chance to watch how the other half lives. Being parents to two children and a newborn has left them exhausted and too tired for sex. Thus, the uninhibited sex life of the two hotties across the way serves as an avatar for the life they wish they led.
Months pass but their interest in watching the couple doesn’t wane. Alli, in particular, seems to need it to survive. It’s about the only thing that jazzes her anymore.  Dizzia is always expert at playing such dour downers. (Remember her whiny performance – “Pleeeeeze get blueberries” – on Louis CK’s LOUIE television series?) She’s funny here, sad too, and eminently relatable.
Director Curry blends pathos and comedy exceedingly well, never letting the New York couple become too caricatured. And despite all the angst, this short’s ending is feel-good positive and might just give it the edge to take the Oscar gold. The other one most likely in contention for the win is NEFTA FOOTBALL CLUB. It’s the most accessible of the shorts this year, and the other one that ends on a distinctively upbeat note.
The Academy’s live-action shorts are presently showing in select theaters across the nation, and after the Oscars are given out on Sunday, both the animated and live-action shorts will be available on numerous VOD platforms including Apple TV and Amazon.
I reviewed the five animated shorts earlier this week and you can read my thoughts on them here at Creative Screenwriting magazine online.
