Hi friends,
A few months ago, I noticed that I was having a hard time keeping track of all of the challenges and projects that folks were organising and making fanworks for.
It made me wish there were a central place where I could go to find them again and because I'm a bit of a nerd for metadata and information organisation, I decided to do something!
The PPCU Fandom Projects Database is now online.
There are listings for both current/upcoming projects as well as masterlists of past projects in the fandom. I’ve put together a little guide here.
More info below the cut. I'm also tagging project organisers so they know they're listed and can decide whether they want to be or not. 💕
What is it?
This is a Notion site where I’ve gathered project information and masterlist links. It also makes different bits of information (such as deadlines and submission types) more readily filterable and searchable than when in the tumblr post format.
What gets listed?
I'm defining a ‘project’ as any type of fandom activity in which someone (the ‘organiser’) issues a call out to the fandom to create, submit, or otherwise participate in something that they are putting together. This is separate from individual rec lists that people have created that are their personal reading activity — the key concept is that multiple people have been invited to contribute information and/or fanworks and/or are engaging in other activities that make the project possible.
I have a project!
If you have a past, current, or upcoming project that you would be interested in seeing listed, feel free to tag or DM me, or you can use the tag #PPCUfandomproject and I will add it as soon as I can. I will also endeavour to add projects as I see them.
It's not on tumblr?!
I recognise that taking this information out of tumblr might not be to everyone's comfort level, so please if your project is listed and you don't want it on there, let me know and I will remove it ASAP. Projects that have been included thus far have been tagged below and I will continue to tag folks when things are added so that there is never an instance where something will be on the website without the project creator being informed about it. If it helps to know, the site is not being search engine indexed.
The listing of my project isn’t accurate/I want to change some of the information.
Just let me know what you’d like me to change and I’ll be happy to do it. 💕
Inspiration.
This was inspired by a project that existed in one of my past fandoms as well as the amazing work in the PPCU space by folks such as @littlemisspascal, @fuckyeahdindjarin, @secretelephanttattoo, and @jolapeno to create lists and directories that enable us to elevate writers and their work in ways that tumblr doesn't necessarily allow for without help.
Project organisers that have been included thus far (Again please lmk if you do not want your project listed!!! 💕)

Tomorrow, after over five years of back and forth with public housing and my ISP, we may finally get cable internet.
aand I don't really care any more (that's not just the depression speaking) because of how much adaptation to low bandwidth internet we've had to do.
Feels weird to think "le netflix" would actually work, years after netflix has lost any interest between the price hike and the cancelled shows.
Here are a few random pirate tips for folks with spotty internet:
-mixdrop allows direct downloads so you can search out a streaming site, find the mixdrop link (open frame in a new window if required) and download. streamwish works on chrome and you have to do three captchas per link.
-reddit open directories: peruse it all, learn which links are always empty or down, find one or two reliable sites. Bookmark a seedbox (a drive for torrenting) belonging to someone who uses the smaller 720p files and check it every day.
-fandom folks tend to share google drives that last about a week
-youtube, ok.ru and archive.org aren't searchable for films/series but if you follow threads, people's review tags and recommendations you can find direct links to bookmark for later.
-keep a large list of things to watch: not just new and trending stuff, that way you can be delighted when that 1997 flick falls in your lap. I use google keep and docs for large lists of bookmarks and names.
It's also about training your brain to enjoy things that are late and out of date. There are fandoms that stay awake and ready to analyse the series you just devoured and want to share about and others that have rave reviews with zero follow up. It's like learning to go to the cinema and museums alone: it's very different from a group or fandom experience but doesn't have to be lonely. If you're used to watching films as a shared experience (or shared later with an online fandom) then watching solo can feel more like reading a book.

Starcourt Mall Map (Annotated)
I was looking at the map from the Stranger Things Wiki and some things weren’t adding it. I thought it was just me mixing up numbers so I decided to literally go through and annotate the actual map with the information from the key.
Tumblr media
Just using this key was difficult because the section colors for the upper level and lower level are too similar and most of the letters and numbers are so blurry it’s hard to make out. Despite this I tried my best until I realized that things still weren’t making sense. There were a lot of listings that had a letter but not a number, or had a number that didn’t exist on the map. I believe there was a disconnect between the prop map and what was actually built.
Having been to film school, I know that something like this map may have been designed early in the pre-production process but things were changed during the rest of development and construction. My biggest clue that this might be the case was that the “Imperial Panda” restaurant, which is central to the Russian code plot, is listed as “Great Panda”, suggesting that the name was changed before building and filming.
The mall that was used for filming was a real mall in Georgia (now abandoned) that Netflix renovated part of to look like an 80s era mall. It’s likely that this renovation necessitated a change to the original plans meaning supplemental background material like the directory map were made slightly incorrect and no one fixed it. After all, this map was never supposed to be seen on screen, it was just supposed to be in the background except someone snuck a picture and uploaded it online.
So I decided to go frame by frame through the mall scenes to see what *actually* made it into the show. Here are the fruits of my almost five hours of “labor”:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anything with a question mark is not something I saw in the show and seems to exist solely on the map key. If it doesn’t have a question mark, then it is visible in the show. The entire J, K and E sections as well as part of the L section are never shown in the show and are most likely the sections of the mall that were not renovated.
In the show the entire F section is non-existent. The map lists those 5 clothing stores but in the show, it’s just a children’s play area with a claw machine, mini carousel, several candy machines and the Indiana Flyer horse ride that plays the song Scoops Troop discovers in the hidden Russian message.
Also there is a nut stand on the first floor and a perfume counter stand on the second floor that are not listed on the map at all.
I hope this helps some fan fic writers out there like me who spend waaaay too much time on fic research.

if i'm being completely honest i think homestuck's impact is moreso on 2010s and beyond's fandom culture which does indeed have overlap with online (keyword online) queer culture but i think it would be much harder to parse its impact on queer culture in a broader sense. then again it's included in a queer media tourney that should have never existed in the first place, a discourse magnet to pit it against prominent works by prominent members of the lgbt community (dtwof), documentaries about oft neglected corners of the community (drag/ballroom culture and twoc in paris is burning), a directorial debut from the first out black lesbian to ever direct a feature film about the representation of black women in cinema (the watermelon woman) and an autobiographical work by a stone butch lesbian (stone butch blues) just to name a few, and i imagine people's frustration is at least partially because of the tunnel vision fandom culture often has when it comes to media consumption

My best friend Stremio
Hi guysss i wanted to make a guide on how to STREAM MOVIES AND TELEVISION FOR FREE with NO ads, NO scary porn popups and NO viruses. You don't need to use a VPN, and nothing is region locked. It's an open source application called Stremio which you can download here. Basically, it's a tool that will scour the web for places to stream/torrent any movie/TV show in the world, including foreign media and list the place with the most seeders so you can guarantee minimal streaming times as long as your connection is OK - and even if you have a shitty connection, it offers multiple resolution levels so you can sacrifice quality for streamability.
The setup might be a little unintuitive (but its super easy!!!) so I'll explain how to below ^^ Let me know if you need any pointers at any part
Once you've downloaded and installed the program (make sure to allow through the firewall, it has to have permissions to be able to stream), the first thing you need to do is create an account. They never send emails or anything like that, it's just a way to save your library.
Download as many addons as you like. You can find many on the Stremio reddit I believe. I think the best one to start off with is Torrentio, which you can configure and install here , but there's also a jigsaw piece in the top right corner where you can find some community addons like this... Here's another link with a lot more. I just downloaded all of them cuz why not lol
Tumblr media
3. Use the search bar to find what you want. It's separated by Series & Movies so make sure you get the right version. There's a couple addons which can help if you scroll down that can search via IMBD or TBP
Tumblr media
4. Select your episode if it's a TV show, or just skip to the next step if it's a film
Tumblr media
5. If you're like me and downloaded a fuckton of addons cuz its fun then itll appear like this
Tumblr media
A simple rule is to go based on the amount of seeders (this is the number next to the 👤 emoji) , but if you want to do a little math, you can go by the seeders-to-filesize ratio to guarantee the fastest speed. If it doesn't load, then you can scroll down to 720p, 480p, DVDrip, etc. There are a lot of options to choose from so just choose whatever works best for your connection :)
6. Bonus step, you can configure subtitles in almost any language as long as it's available if you get subtitle-based addons. (There's also dubs for foreign media). Sometimes they're embedded like on the 1st img, and sometimes they're scoured from places online, so you might need to configure the timing a little like the 2nd img, but usually it's pretty easy to find subtitles that will match up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. All done! Happy pirating. Let me know if you need any help ^__^
P.S: if you're short on space, sometimes its best to just turn the cache off, or go into the directory and manually delete the cache. Won't break anything
Tumblr media
P.P.S: Right clicking on the stream will show you options like opening it into VLC (lifesaver if you want to go above 100% vol) or downloading it (AT YOUR OWN RISK) if your internet can't handle streaming

Any idea(s) as to why Cait hasn't been to any OL functions such as Hublander and the upcoming Land on 6? What was the last event she attended?
Thanks for the message, @dragonflydreams47 😃
She might not have been invited. She might not have been interested. She might have had previous commitments. She might be done with attending cons that aren’t Outlander-sanctioned.
What was the last event she attended?
last publicised: JW Anderson fashion show on the 18th of February in London 😉
last con: NYCC, virtually, in October 2021
last festival: ATX in June 2023
last fan event: Season 7 Premiere in June 2023
I’m able to post only 10 images at a time. Here’s a sampling of fan events she’s attended since 2015:

She’ll be busy, preparing for her directorial debut and, like the rest of the cast, getting ready for Season 8. Assuming Starz promotes the elusive Season 7B, we’ll see her in what are probably long-ago recorded videos, etc. Some fans are wondering if Starz will host another mid-season premiere event like they did for Season 1B in 2015.
I’m looking forward to seeing her promote The Amateur (8 November) and The Cut (TBA), and hope the films are represented next awards season. As much that circus irritates me, I enjoy seeing her and Tony out and about. 👠👞
Remember… I have failed 'Star Wars' trivia tests. People come up to me at conventions and use terms that I've never heard of. — Mark Hamill
Sounds like the Force wasn’t with him. 🤷🏻‍♂️

We're All Going to the World's Fair (2022, dir. Jane Schoenbrun) - A Review
Tumblr media
You're wrapped up in bed, headphones on, playing with your laptop. It's 1am and you have school in the morning. You click on the next shitty creepypasta video, but then something happens. It's unnerving, strange, even somehow scary and now sleep is just not going to happen. Every lonely kid with unsupervised internet access has done it and that's what Jane Schoenbrun's We're All Going to the World's Fair feels like; the one creepypasta that was actually scary. The trans filmmaker draws on these formative online experiences for her incredibly strong directorial debut.
Casey (debuting actor Anna Cobb) is a teenager that seeks out distraction in a popular creepypasta "The World's Fair Challenge". After commencing the challenge with a filmed ritual that involves smearing blood on her laptop screen, she continues to create videos which contribute to a growing community and expanding lore claiming to document the challenge's sinister consequences. People say they're losing feeling in their bodies or turning into plastic. Casey is a horror movie fan and decides that it would be fun to live in one. You get the impression she'd like to live anywhere else. Cobb is immediately outstanding, pulling off her portrayal of being young, alone and too online with a similar intimate familiarity to Schoenbrun. The way she looks into the camera can only come from the eyes of someone who has seen a liveleak video.
We never see Casey with friends or family (although we hear her father once) and this loneliness is deeply felt throughout the runtime with us rarely leaving the perspective of a laptop or camera. Where else is an isolated teenager to look to other than the webcam? In the occasional bursts of an outside world for Casey, we see a generic snow covered woods and a barn where her father stores a rifle. The shots in these moments are cold and distant, filled with a general dislike and disassociation with the outside world. Schoenbrun likes their horror quiet and subdued, shots regularly hang still for uncomfortable and odd amounts of time accompanied by a droning and effective score from Alex G.
Like with any good online storytelling, the great tension is whether or not Casey's videos are real experiences and she's a mentally unwell adolescent putting herself at risk or is really an inventive online filmmaker. This is asked in the film by another World's Fair participant. The film also occasionally follows JLB (Michael J. Rogers), a middle aged man who begins messaging Casey, into a massive empty house with the seemingly sole lived in space being his office that couldn't feel further from the girl's bedroom.
I've never seen anything attempt to truly capture being a chronically online youth before, but it's hard to imagine anything doing it better. With it's truly unique and fresh take and style, We're All Going to the World's Fair is a must watch that you'll never forget. Jane Schoenbrun is an extremely unique and exciting voice and I very much look forward to seeing their future work.

The Pixar shift saga continued:
All over twitter and even BlueSky, I see it, and it's quite something. Hell, people I know who barely ever talk about animation, or film or pop culture for that matter, are talking about it... Animators, artists, filmmakers, critics... All calling it out.
Namely, Pixar CCO Pete Docter's words on having Pixar - at the behest of Disney executives - move away from telling "autobiographical" stories, making films that are personal to their respective filmmakers... Hollow, corporate words that I bet he was "supposed" to say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The backlash is almost feverish. To the point where some are reading it as Pixar catering to white people only, given that two of those "autobiographical" films are... Let's see... TURNING RED, directed by Chinese-Canadian Domee Shi, and ELEMENTAL, directed by Korean-American Peter Sohn. SOUL as well, Docter's latest directorial endeavor, which was co-directed/written by Kemp Powers. Whether the intent is "no more autobiographical/personal stories" or "no more stories told from different cultural backgrounds", the pull quote is still NOT a good look. Hell, I'd say this looks worse than the time John Lasseter fired Brenda Chapman off of BRAVE.
And I wonder if this quote, otherwise tucked away on some cynical Bloomberg article whose writer feels that sequels will "restore Pixar's magic", getting all this scrutiny online possibly leads to... Pipe dream... A clarification at the very least? Some kind of backtracking?
Look I'm no dummy, corporations are gonna corporation. I'm pretty sure if Disney overlords are mandating it, it's gonna happen either way. Bob Iger's whole deal, after taking back the reigns from Bob Chapek (who he appointed in the first place), is this need to make the films "better". And that means interfering with the filmmakers instead of considering every other variable: High budgets, competition, a much different marketplace, how COVID wrecked everything and accelerating long-gestating problems in the industry, etc.
But the statements didn't go unnoticed, and there's some hot water brewing. Maybe an animation news site, particularly one that practically THRIVES off of this kind of drama, amplifies it. And maybe, just maybe... A little controversy erupts over it? Part of me feels that this won't go unnoticed, it already hasn't in some circles. Twitter and BlueSky and such are not real life, but I think the eruption over this quote speaks volumes. Pixar is often associated with original storytelling that's often from the filmmakers' passions and hearts, and to hear Docter essentially say "We're not going to do that anymore" has been a shock to many, myself included.
And again, if you've read my previous rants on this, I don't blame Docter. I think he's merely just saying what Iger's cronies want him to say. He said something similar a year ago after ELEMENTAL was released:
"I always felt that ELEMENTAL would speak to a lot of people, and I'm so happy it has... But we have also taken another look at the projects we're working on now. What are the kinds of films we want to be making? I really think I want to double down on what allowed us to speak to audiences to begin with."
This quote, from October of last year, went relatively unnoticed. This seems to put it into perspective better, even if it's a little more vague. This sounds more "let's play up certain commercial elements" and not "squash out the personal stuff".
I don't mind a compromise where an artistic vision shares the 90 minutes with what the bean counters call "general appeal" or whatever. Often times, that's just how the sausage is even made in animation-land, even if it makes for results we might not always like. That's literally the entirety of Disney Animation's output from the mid-'90s up until the mid-'00s. Films like HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME had things like the silly gargoyles and fart jokes, yet they were still allowed to have some really great stuff in them and really cool filmmaking that young animation fans marvel at today. It's even a thing in the praised '10s movies, too. And a lot of the non-Disneys, too. NIMONA, for example. Take away the punk edge and LGBTQIA+ perspective, and it's quite similar to a lot of Western animated movies, particularly the "mild-mannered character gets saddled with the funny and unpredictable sidekick" thing with Ballister and Nimona, and that end-of-2nd-act breakup.
Outside of the SPIDER-VERSE movies and maybe PUSS IN BOOTS 2, it's typically imperfect in the American feature animation circuit. There's almost always behind the scenes battles and compromising, and ultimately, I'm happy if we still get a film that looks like something the filmmakers had a great time making and were able to work around certain notes/mandates/etc.
This is merely speculation on my part, but what matters is that the quote that's under fire is recent. Like, days ago recent. And I wonder what'll happen from here... Things go as Iger wants them to go? Or some kind of attempt at correction?

The SWG Hosts Tolkien Fanworks
Fandom creators may be looking for alternative and additional archives, in light of the multiple critiques currently being made of the OTW and AO3.
This is not intended as commentary on the many issues raised about the OTW and AO3 in recent weeks, although an unofficial position of our organization (as a small archive) has always been that it is ideal to archive your fanworks across multiple sites, and multiple options for archiving should exist. Rather, this post will provide information about who we are and the fanworks we accept so that Tolkien fanworks creators can decide if our archive is a viable option for them.
What is the SWG?
The Silmarillion Writers' Guild was founded in 2005 by @dawnfelagund, and our archive opened in 2007. Our mission is to provide an online archive and community for anyone interested in The Silmarillion that values civility and openness in discussing and making fanworks about Tolkien's legendarium. You can read the SWG's complete mission here.
We currently archive just over 5,000 fanworks by 414 creators. In addition, we offer monthly creative challenges, publish a weekly newsletter that features research by our members, maintain a reference library and beta-reader directory, compile a listing of Tolkien fandom events, and host events such as live readings, fanfiction book clubs, and collaborative creative sessions on our Discord.
What fanworks does the SWG accept?
The SWG is an archive for Silmarillion-based fanworks. We try to define the term "Silmarillion-based" as broadly and inclusively as possible so that we can welcome as many fanworks on our site as possible while maintaining our purpose as a Silmarillion group. Significant use of a source, character or character group, location, or time period featured in The Silmarillion, as long as it is not also covered in detail in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, qualifies a work for our site. Our detailed FAQ on how we define "Silmworks" can be found here.
We accept crossover, alternate universe (AU), and multi-age fanworks, as long as a significant component meets the "Silm fanwork" definition above.
Non-Silmarillion Tolkien Fanworks. We recently added a section to our site called Beyond the Silmarillion, which accepts all fanworks based on Tolkien's writings or Tolkien-based adaptations (films, shows, games, etc.) SWG members become eligible to post in this section once they have archived five fanworks or 10,000 words with us, whichever comes first.
Types of Fanwork We Archive. The SWG currently accepts the following types of fanwork: writing (fiction, nonfiction, plays/screenplays, and poetry), artwork, audio, video, link collections, playlists, series, and multimedia fanworks that include two or more of the formats above. If you need to archive a fanwork that doesn't match any of the above, the site moderators will help you archive your work with us, if it's possible to do so. With the exception of video, we host all fanworks on our server. (Videos must be posted to a video hosting site.)
Ratings and Adult Content. We accept all ratings of fanwork. The only adult-rated fanworks we cannot accept are images or videos that include "graphic depictions of sexual activity, sexualized nudity, and any representation of an underage character in a sexual situation" because these fanworks violate the Terms of Service of our webhost.
AI-Generated Fanworks. We do not accept fanworks entirely or partially produced through prompting an AI generator. Our AI policy can be found here.
What are the conduct expectations for SWG members?
Simply put, the SWG "is a positive-focused, open-minded space." We require civility in all interactions conducted on our archive and affiliated social sites. The SWG is a moderated site and community, so we do hold our members to our expectations. You can read our complete Site Etiquette and Terms of Service here.
How is the SWG governed?
The SWG was founded and is currently run by Dawn Felagund, assisted by a team of moderators. Active moderators are Russandol, Grundy, Lyra, Saelind, and Janeways; they make the ultimate decisions concerning the archive. Other volunteers aid other tasks needed to run the site and community and may contribute to decision-making as well.
The SWG is not a democracy in that we do not hold formal elections and there are certain aspects of our mission that we are unwilling to change, even under majority preference. However, we consider member feedback as part of our decision-making process whenever possible—especially with regard to decisions on controversial or impactful issues—and some of the policies and features we've implemented over the years have come about by member request.
Members who need assistance, have a concern, or wish to make a suggestion can contact the moderators directly or use the #town-hall channel in the SWG's Discord.
We aim (and are generally able) to reply to all communications from members within twenty-four hours.
Because we are a small organization with relatively few decision makers, we can generally implement change relatively quickly. Our recent AI policy offers a good example of how governance in our group works. The issue of AI-generated fanworks was raised in a discussion among the site and Discord moderators on May 5. In this discussion, the moderators shared information and came to a consensus on how they wanted AI-generated fanworks handled on the SWG. Dawn drafted an AI policy, which was put before the other moderators for feedback on May 9. By May 13, the site admins had researched and implemented a block on AI scraper bots using all known strategies. Also on May 13, the AI policy was opened for public comment through May 26, during which time members and other interested parties shared suggestions via email with the moderators and in discussion in the #town-hall channel on Discord. During this time, the draft policy was revised twice using those suggestions. On May 28, the finalized policy was announced on the SWG's site and social networks, and relevant documents on the site were updated to reflect and link to the new policy.
How does the SWG handle racism and other attacks on groups that have been historically marginalized in fandom and beyond?
As stated in our Site Etiquette, as an organization, we recognize that fandom and the Tolkien fandom specifically has historically been and continues to be hostile to and dismissive of fans from marginalized groups, including fans who are Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC); women; LGBTQIA+; and fans with disabilities. We believe strongly that, as a fandom organization that has benefited from the status quo, we must also be part of the solution to ensure that these inequities do not persist.
Specific solutions we have implemented on our group include:
Our Site Etiquette and Terms of Service strictly forbids "[a]ttacks on other members based on personal characteristics (such as race, color, religion, ethnicity, nationality, age, sexuality, gender identity or expression, disability, or medical condition)" and states that "[a]busive or derogatory behavior will not be tolerated at any time or in any part of the SWG. We do not welcome or allow any content in our group that is designed to be hurtful or insulting." While we generally observe a three-strike policy for rule violations, "[i]f moderators feel that someone is acting deliberately to harm SWG and/or its members … we reserve the right to suspend that person's account without prior warning." Our hope with this policy is to allow members who mess up the opportunity to improve while also having the ability to remove bad actors immediately.
We currently require fanworks on our site to be correctly labeled with warnings, including fanworks that include "in-universe intolerance," such as racism, homophobia, and misogyny. Creators have the option of labeling a fanwork as "Choose Not to Warn" if they do not want to label their fanwork. Our ratings and warnings policy is here.
We maintain an inclusivity focus group that we consult on policies and issues related to inclusivity or that may have a disproportionate impact on some groups of fans. Any SWG member who is part of a group historically marginalized in fandom is welcome to join this focus group and participate when and how they feel comfortable. Any member can request the input of the inclusivity focus group on a moderator decision.
If I want to archive my work with you, what is the best way to do this?
First, review the Site Etiquette and Terms of Service, and if you believe our group is a good fit for you and your work, register for an SWG account.
A moderator will approve your account before you can begin posting or commenting on the site. We aim to approve new accounts within twenty-four hours of registration; typically, it takes much less time than that to be approved.
Once you are approved, you can begin posting your fanworks! We do ask that new members who are archiving many older works with us to backdate these fanworks and exclude them from the Most Recent list to allow creators posting new work to have that spotlight.
Questions on how to use the site, SWG policies, or how best to archive past works with us are welcome via the site's contact form, by emailing the moderators at [email protected], or reaching out to the mods via any of the SWG's social media.

BOOK REVIEW:
GHOSTBUSTER' S DAUGHTER - LIFE WITH MY DAD HAROLD RAMIS (VIOLET RAMIS STIEL)
Tumblr media
@amalthea9 @professorlehnsherr-almashy @angelixgutz @the-blue-fairie @princesssarisa @themousefromfantasyland @scarletblumburtonofeastlondon @thealmightyemprex @bixiebeet
I got curious about this book for a while after seeing posts of pages, pictures and quotes from it here on Tumblr.
I finally got to listen the audiobook, in a site that provided it for free that downloaded it from Audible.
The story of how the conception of this book happened is interesting: the author, Violet Ramis Stiel, initially tought of writing a collaborative book about parenting with her father, Harold, when he was still alive and she had just become the parent of two children.
They intended it to be a project where they would compare and contrast their perspectives on parenthood and share those perspectives with the public.
Sadly, Harold Ramis got ill and passed away in 2014, before getting a chance to write a paragraph of the provisionally titled We're All Gonna Die, Now Go To Sleep.
During the period of mourning, while corresponding with friends and fans of her father's work online, Violet mentioned the idea of the book about parenting.
And people encouraged her to write the book, even tough her father passed away and it did turn into something different than originally intended.
So, this book, published in 2018, was the result. After sharing a letter she wrote right after Harold's passing as a way to proccess her grief and briefly introducing her father's birth date and place and who his parents were, she goes to what she calls her beggining, telling about the peculiar romance and eventual marriage of her parents, Harold and Anne Plotkin, in 1967, soon after they graduated college, and his change of jobs from psychiatric hospital caregiver, to farmer for a week, to taxi driver, to freelance journalist, before his joining of the Second City and National Lampoon Radio Hour troupes, where he really discovered his vocation for audiovisual arts and comedy while his wife developed her talent for painting.
In 1977, Harold and Anne decide to have a baby, with Anne specially seeing this as an adventure to go with the flow, and in that same year, Violet was conceived and born, and because Anne had a complicated childhood and also suffered from post partum depression in a time that it wasn't really understood, Harold became Violet's primary parent, feeding her, bathing her, nursing her when she got sick, and joining her in her naps.
Besides this inversion of roles, other aspects that made the family unconventional was that they were very open in talking to little Violet about things like sex and drugs (wich both members of the couple consumed alongside their friends from artistic circles), traveled a lot, and had a deal where each one could have relationships with other people, as long as the other returned home.
From 1978 forward, after his work on television in the first two seasons of SCTV, we get information about Harold Ramis slowly getting experience in filmaking, enjoying the success of Animal House, wich he wrote with Doug Kenney, despite the fact that he got frustrated when John Landis acted controling as a director and didn't cast him in one of the roles, the complicated production of his directorial debute, Caddyshack, to later have a more narratively consistent success with National Lampoon's Vacation, writing and acting in an important role in Stripes and writing and acting in his most famous work, Ghostbusters.
After this period of slowly getting success in the movie industry, there comes the production of his next film as a director, Club Paradise, which os overall fun backstage (him once getting arrested by the Jamaican Police for posession of marijuana not withstanding), is not a box ofice hit.
It was around this time that Harold had an affair with director Amy Heckerling, when both were still married to their respective spouses, which got her pregnant with his second child, Molly, and for a variety of reasons, he regretfully distanced himself from that child until years later, when a DNA test revealed that she wasn't biologically related to her mother's then husband, and eventually she decided to contact Harold, becoming close to him and, specially, Violet.
This complicated development is told divided in three chapters.
By the late 1980s, Harold works in the more luke warm received Ghostbusters II, divorces from Anne, falls in love with production assistant Erica Mann and eventually proposes and gets married to her.
Violet's custody is shared between Harold and Anne, which is a challenge because each household has a different aproach in raising her: whereas Anne keeps being free spirited and letting her loose, at Harold and Erica's house there are more extricted rules, to which Violet reacts by becoming more gloomy and rebelious. To add more complications, she is bullied at school, and her mother starts to date a man who turns out to be a pedophile and sexually abuses Violet, who, despite constantly blaming herself in her mind, eventually gets the courage to denounce him to her parents, with her father acting specially protective and suportive.
The 1990s start, and in paralell to Harold's success as a director with the acclaim of Groundhog Day, his personal life still gets in turmoil, with his backstage fight with Bill Murray, Violet still acting in a rebellious and gloomy way that even involves a fascination with the gangster life style, and a night where he and his two young songs get hold at gunpoint by two robbers at their home in Los Angeles.
At 16, Violet gets pregnant for the first time, and after repressing herself in secrecy, she shares her plight with her family, who support her when she decides to get an abortion.
Is after this moment that her unstable fase starts to go away, and she starts to open herself to dialogue and retakes a loving relationship with her family.
The later half of the 1990s come, and Violet graduate in college with honors, while Harold presents another directorial critical and comercial success with Analize This. Her father comes clean to her about having another child that he was distant from during a trip they make together.
Come the 2000s, and with it, a lukearm reception to Harold's remake of Beddazled, the family proccessing the trauma of 09/11/2001, Violet figuring out her career ambitions until deciding to become a Social Worker, and having two kids of her own.
Harold continues to work, with his movie The Ice Harvest receiving mixed reactions, while as an actor, he is complimented for his performances in Orange County and Knocked Up.
Violet parts ways with the father of her first two children and eventually finds a new love who becomes her now husband.
Harold works in Year One, the biblical satire that he hopes to be his next important movie. Unfortunally, lack of rewritings due a writers strike coinciding with the production and the studio changing the movie's rating rom R to PG 13 harm the quality of the movie, and when it comes out, is a financial and critical failure.
Harold has to deal with a period of depression, from which he slowly comes out with the help of his friends and family.
Until it returns, heavier, alternating with glimpses of calm and hope, when he suffers an infection that slowly turns into the brain disease that would take away his strength to walk, his ability to hear and talk, and kill him.
We follow the narration of his agonizing, the grief of his family, and end with a full circle, as Violet returns to the memory of the conception of the book, and writes a new leather to her father in the afterlife.
I already enjoy biographies, calling them "a more (at least appearance wise) respectfull gossip magazine".
And yes, there are elements that feel like reading a gossip, while other times it feels like a book of funny anedoctes, a novel, a film history book, a series of philosophical diaries, and the guide to parenting that it was originally imagined to be.
I was surprised and chocked at some moments, laughed at others, and specially was in the verge of tears as the book was coming to an end, knowing that it was based in real life and so we were coming to Violet's loss of her father, but still wishing for a happy ending, like watching a tragic play where you know the ending will be sad, but still hopes that the characters will end happily ever after.
Trough this sharing of their life together, the story of Violet and her father Harold explores a lot of themes: artistic and sociopolitical influences, the art of filmaking, fame, consumerism, gender roles, family dinamics, friendship, faith and spirituality, grief and trauma and the eventual peace we can slowly find when focusing on the good moments we had with our loved ones when they were alive, rather than just on the fact that they are phisically gone.
I'm glad that she decided to share that complex, but not complicated story, and I got to listen to it, and be touched by it.
Highly recomend it, specially for people who are enthusiasts about film history.

Babe, how are you doing? Jungkook is out to collect more hearts. I quite like that this seems more in line with jk than other American produced songs that bts has done in the past. The 90’s film sequences and theme was used throughout and elevated the hunk/simp image lol. Jungkook looked great in his outfits and the song is easy to listen too. Confession tho, I didn’t quite like the rap verse and I really looked forward to a romantic/simple song with emotional vocals. A example of that would be decalcomania… I guess we’ll have to see if that happens in the album. What did you think?
-🫧
My darling Bubbles it’s so wonderful to hear from you!!
I’m gunna talk a lot so ⤵️
I’m good! I’m working on UTWT book things now that I’m off vacation, and then once that’s sorted I will be deep diving into chapter 5 of TWWWBAATTA -> just gotta edit! And then and then! irl I’m job hunting on top of that so I’m very busy 😂.
What about you!!!!????? How are you? How’s life?
I don’t mind the song! It kinda reminds me of bad decisions (cuz of all the days of the week stuff) but it’s cute!! And then the explicit version makes me want to eat rocks cuz that’s my baby and he doesn’t say things like that. (Please know I’m fully aware he is a grown man and can do whatever he wants I’m not a puritan just sentimental)
The music video was really interesting! I found a lot of the directorial choices interesting too. They definitely made a few angling choices I found a little confusing and off putting but that’s just a difference in personal style. The whole idea behind it was great! I’m excited to see what he does next.
I think the rap part isn’t necessary to the song, nor do I know who Latto is so I didn’t really feel one way or another about it. But I know her verse made a lot of ARMY uncomfortable which sucks. I really really dislike a lot of modern rap, there’s few exceptions like our boys and then bands like twenty one pilots and such. More rap with meaning then just spitting lines about sex or drugs or nothing of substance, which I feel a lot of it has become. That kind of music just isn’t for me.
So I probably won’t have it on my regular rotation but I will have it in my kpop playlist! If when his album drops there’s songs I like a lot more then they’ll get dropped into my regular listening playlist!
I’ve found that I vibe most with Yoongi and then some of Hobi and Joons musical styles more. They’re a bit more rough around the edges and musically diverse in styles, which is very much more my type of music, whereas the youngins in the Maknae line tend to be more Pop-y and upbeat. And there’s nothing wrong with that! It’s just not usually my style so it takes longer for me to learn to vibe with it.
Over all I think it’s a nice song and he’s doing well! I loved that Sohee played the love interest because I LOVED her in My Name. That was a great little highlight for me!
Thank you so much for reaching out!! I’ve barely been able to be online much the last few weeks so it’s always wonderful to hear from you!!

hi! i worked in film and theatre when i was out of college, and also took some acting classes. thats true about the cast definitely knowing scripts and arcs ahead of time. in most cases, for an actor to do the best work, they need to be aware of their arc and not going in blind. how can they truly understand their character otherwise? with sometime like ST, made over so long, the details may have changed and certain cases like robin's were edited during production. but maya suggested that major change for robin herself, so she wasnt in the dark. and david harbour has known the ending for a long time. he's an adult, they trust him. finn, i feel, would have guessed even if he wasnt told, as he seems like a wise old soul and is well-versed in cinema and therefore tropes, as well as the duffer's own style. he knew exactly how to play mike in s4 and perhaps even received private directorial instruction and secret scripts that detailed things only his character needs to know. keeping actors in the dark is usually only utilised where it benefits the character - for example, if they want a genuine awe response on screen - because it is also controversial and can put actors at risk (see historic cases of actors being forced/pressured to do things they hadnt agreed to prior).
the cast are instructed to say they know nothing for press reasons, and its so unbelievable to me that im surprised the press keep asking what they know. hoping they'll slip? cos it's an easy way to build hype? cos it's an expected question? who knows. but it's funny to watch all the different ways they choose to deny it. at the SAG awards once gaten said he knows nothing, then noah made a very obvious face that he was lying, and gaten then conceded he knew stuff hahah. noah then tried to cover it up and say he knew nothing too and was joking. noah wasn't lying well in that instance haha! probs too full of adrenaline. adorable.
https://youtu.be/pyy5Y4WyiRI?si=Wn5spFB8-QNE9jei&t=99
he has also admitted to keeping a daily countdown on his phone for the season's release, so he's an excitable boy. finn is also a hilariously bad liar. i love seeing them try to deny what they know and am always flummoxed when fans believe it.

That's more what I thought! Doubt my instincts on the whole filming/acting process because I've never studied anything, it's all very online observation and osmosis.
And oooh the babies! That clip. They are so sweet. Noah is not a good liar oh my god. And he keeps a countdown on his phone?? Aw. I just love when the people making the shows are actual fans, too. It makes me sad and feel some sort of way when actors say they can't watch themselves in stuff they've made, but I kind of understand it. I do find it difficult to read back my own writing once I've published it, so. I get it to an extent.
