I’ve started a new design series of gowns based on kpop music videos/concepts/groups and have finished my first set which are for Oneus.
Tumblr media
These are inspired by No Diggity, Come Back Home, and Lit. This was seriously so fun and it was nice breaking out my copics again. Can fact, drawing outfits is what pulled me into drawing at a very young age and over time my focused switched mostly to fanart and character design, but it was nice getting back into clothing design. I honestly wish I had minored in costume design while in college sometimes...
Tumblr media
Of this grouping, I designed Lit first. I wanted to have the traditional inspiration and pulled from their looks as well as modern and traditional Hanbok. The tassel (norigae) charm is their logo and the hair stick is a flower inspired by the many floral patterns that we see. I used a gold paint pen and gold gel pen on the accessories for an added shimmer, and the hair color was based on Keonhee’s.
Tumblr media
Next is Come Back Home which I wanted to have as many of the mv vibes as possible. So we have a regal/military/vamp high-low battle worn dress with the crown and necklace that are so incredibly important on the story film. Again, I added gold paint/gel to the detailing.
Tumblr media
Lastly for this batch I have No Diggity. Now, to be completely honest, this concept was not my favorite at all but I got very inspired. The hair color is based on Leedo’s which contrasts really nicely agains all of the red. Here, I used a silver paint pen and added some jewelry as well as hair jewelry.
I have the majority of their other mvs designs finalized and just need to ink and color them. Please enjoy and I’ll see you around!

ONEUS KINGS OF CULTURAL DIFFUSION
Reasons why I find 가자 (LIT) by ONEUS as a masterpiece, a great example of cultural diffusion.
First of all, it is remarkable that the entire lyrics are written in Korean. But not only that, songs and phrases so typical of their culture are used in many parts and it can hardly be translated:
"ganggangsullae"
"nelliriya ongheya (eolssu eolssu)"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Secondly, it is common in the kpop to find cases or dilemmas about racism or cultural appropriation. Just like hair styles, accessories or sounds from other cultures which are used as an aesthetic or exotic attraction (this is debatable).
Oneus, on the other hand, provide a good example of cultural appreciation. But their MV goes beyond showing their culture respectfully, all their performance is a marvel of cultural promotion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, but how does this work? It is easy to intuit it. The video and the lyric of LIT leads you to explore the history of Korea, its rituals and ceremonies, festivals, its mythology, its symbology, its art and even politics.
For years the kpop has been characterized by following western trends and groups have incorporated foreign languages into its lyrics as a way of making its music commercial. Therefore, it is not surprising that almost all songs have at least one word in English (or Spanish).
Also, diverse styles and concepts have been used in order to highlight a modern side of Korea: technology, fashion and aesthetics. Inspirations have come from everywhere and that's why kpop have a great diversity, maybe as a product of globalization.
Tumblr media
However, in Korean culture, the mythical aspects and their tradition of centuries ago remain in force. Which is also the germ of his national identity. All this, unfortunately, hasn't been reflected in its musical productions (there are some exceptions).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, ONEUS is the first group that covers many aspects of Korean culture in a respectful, complete and proud way. This sets a precedent in Korean audiovisual production, like an example of cultural diffusion.
Tumblr media
Just imagine that they will be singing and dancing LIT in the USA! In front of a lot of people who probably don't know anything about Korean culture or their traditions.
