Teaching in the Ko-reaal

So, I’ve come to realize that there isn’t a solid answer on how to teach. Some might want you to teach students to love what they learn and some might want you to teach students to drill things into their brains. It’s been hard for me, as a teacher, because all the ‘hagwons’ or ‘English Kindy’ have different standards or philosophies on how they want to run their school. Then it is our job, as teachers, to follow through as best as you can. It’s even harder when you’ve worked at a school that runs their school differently. It takes a lot of time and patience because not only do you have to adjust yourself to the school but you also have to focus on meeting your students and getting to know their students.

Aside from the lil rant on realizing how different schools can be. I made a kid cry today. 

Coming from a school where academic was priority, it was important to drill a lot of things into their brain quickly. The kids were used to it and had the support from home that they adjusted to it (this made me want to work harder in feeding them with more knowledge). However, at this school, the students are so intimidated by the new language they have to encounter. They come into school stressed. As teachers, it’s hard because you don’t want to pressure these students, and parents do not want that either. But, the question is, what’s the limit, when do you know you are too babying the student and when do you know you are pushing the student to thrive too far. Where is the balance and how do you work around it. I have so many unanswered questions and questions I don’t know how and what to ask. 

I want to be a good teacher. There is just too much to focus on. I want to help my students to become good citizens, good friends and also gain the motivation and encouragement to learn more. However, it can be draining. I feel drained by the end of the day. I try hard to leave my problems behind as soon as I enter the doors to meet and greet my students but there are problems within the classroom that are too big for me and belittles me. I feel vulnerable. However, I try to push through and put a smile on my face. No matter how understanding and patient I try to me, I am always defeated. Even though, I don’t show that I am defeated, I feel defeated at the end of the day and leave the classroom with regret. Regret of thinking how I could’ve done things better. 

Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day. 

Tomorrow’s goal:

Be more patient

Take things slow

Encourage English

Make learning enjoyable

I can honestly say I LOVE my job. These high school students did NOT want to be at our Job Shadow at first and only 9/14 of them said they were thinking about going to college. After 3.5 hours with me and my coworkers, several of them said they are now interested in becoming engineers and 14/14 said they plan on going to college! SUCCESS. In a school district with a 58% graduation rate and an even lower % continuing on to college- The fact 100% of these students are starting to look beyond their current situations and seeing themselves moving towards something better is EXACTLY why I switched careers. So proud to be making a difference and creating something way bigger than myself. #OneStudentAtATime
