Whenever I see fanfic generalized as 'bad writing', I have to wonder wtf the speaker is reading. Because I read a lot of fic. Like, I read entire tags sometimes. And on average, fic is Decent. There is some really Great stuff, and usually the worst I come across is fic that is profoundly Mediocre. But actually Bad? So bad I wont finish reading it? That's pretty rare.

In the fandoms I normally read, anyway.

Cuz I started reading for something different and wow. I am dnf-ing stories left and right for every reason under the sun. I've quit more fics in one day than i have for entire other fandom tags. It's wild.

#even the ones that I finish a good 30-40% of them are just so lackluster #stuff happens in the plot but it doesnt feel like stuff happens emotionally for the reader (often because they are an inexperienced writers #so i just kudos and move on)#one was actually technically well written with good vocabulary and whatnot but it was written pretentious as hell #like there's a time and a place for certain tones. the characters you are writing would never use any of those 5-dollar adjectives #you are liberally sprinkling into ea ch and every sentence. its all correctly used and coherent #but its jarring. it feels like the fucking Muppets having highly intellectual discourse and its Not A Gag. no punchline just SAT words
