We now join Mildew Wolf mentoring a few young campers in the skindiving experience at some northern Wisconsin summer camp
[Having led his group of largely neophyte campers into the lake's shallows, we find the following ensuing--]
MILDEW WOLF, snark obvious: Hello, campers ... at any rate, Uncle Mildew is going to show and lead you into what is bound to be a new twist on the usual swim routine--SKIN DIVING!
A CHEEKY CAMPER: Do you mean we're going diving--
MILDEW WOLF, cutting short the camper's remark: I assume the next word from his lips was going to be "naked." Regrettably, such a term as "skin diving" does not imply your going "into the raw" underwater necessarily; and besides, our experiences will involve [holding one such up for all to see] a mask/snorkel combination and flippers, which is a rather interesting way to see things beneath the water's surface, and besides, there is much fascination to be had in what lies beneath!
ANOTHER CHEEKY CAMPER: Does this mean we'll be seeing lake monsters during this dive you're talking about?
MILDEW WOLF: Don't be silly ... and besides, Scooby-Doo has exposed more lake monsters as Outright Frauds than you've had hot dinners! More than anything, our dive taster will be a close-to-shore such, yet one offering some interesting perspectives as well! At any rate, let's get the masks cleaned off with the "spit-and-rinse" technique demonstrated previously ...

Hello! this will be a quick process post so that you can see how I needlefelted a fursuit head!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I began by following the "bucket head" tutorial by Matrices, then added a layer of polyfill so that I wouldn't use as much of my merino wool. This is how I typically make a doll head, my "core wool" is often polyfill because it really likes to clump together and fuse.
Overall, this project took about two months of my spare time. This is the first fursuit head I have made, but not my first needlefelt project.
I would really like to encourage other people to try making masks this way! You can do any kind of subtle color with wool and the wool fiber is very cheap. If you wanted to make a fursuit head with the entirety of starry night flowing over it, or a head with tons and tons of complex colors, I think wool might be the best material. I also did not need to know how to pattern or sew in order to make this-- it was sculpture rather than sewing, which I am bad at.
The rest under the cut!
Tumblr media
Another angle where you can see that I am building up the structure of the head.
I then made the ears, which are translucent because they're felted, just like real ears!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wasn't happy yet with the proportions at this point, so I spent a lot of time figuring that out and deciding where and how I'd be placing the eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a pair of sculpey follow-me eyes by using a little soy sauce dish as a concave circular mold and tried a foam clay nose and teeth. The sculpey eyes could be more successful, they took a lot of shaving and adjusting to get right and they eventually cracked from the strain I'd put them through while making them more shallow. For a while, I intended to make wefts of white wool to use on the sides of the head, but I ended up preferring a domestic shorthair head shape because it reads the most clearly as a cat vs any other animal.
Tumblr media
I originally intended to have the eyes behind clear plastic domes and used "shaker domes" that people use to make greeting cards to cover the eye, but in the end they made the eyes too dull. I made foam clay housing for the eyes and painted it pink with acrylic paint. I used stick-on car window tint to create the pupils. My visibility inside the head is really good!
Finally, after fiddling, one of the eyes was deeper than the other and I had to re-set both to account for it. I added spot glitter on top of the acrylic paint on the eye using some gold watercolor paint I had, which was silly because I'll need to wash the head at some point. I will probably seal the eyes before washing and hope for the best. I intend to spot clean the head until it absolutely needs to be washed, at which point I'll remove some pieces or find a way to protect them while soaking the head in a cool dr. bronner's bath.
I glued down a layer of felt fiber on top of the foam clay "tear ducts" and then felted new fiber over the tear duct skin and cheeks to blend them into the face. I also removed the teeth and closed her mouth because I didn't have time to adjust the teeth as much as I wanted before the con that my friends and I attended. I would like to modify this head so that she can open and close her mouth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, I added wire whiskers with little glass beads looped onto the ends and paper eyelashes that I also watercolored and sealed, like the insides of the eyes. Like I said before, it's gonna be a problematic wash, but I'm confident I'll figure it out, and I can always repair her or replace her lashes if something goes wrong.
Last thing, to keep the inside of the head nice and cool and prevent fogging since in the end I closed the mouth and had sealed eyes, I made a snorkel out of a snorkel mouthpiece fitted into two collapsible auto funnels.
I would say that realistically this entire project cost me less than $150. I had some materials lying around, like the wire and the beads and the sculpey.
I added two ear vents on either side of the head so that I had options on where to feed the snorkel out. If you look at the other pictures on the blog of me wearing the head, you mostly can't even see the snorkel mouth. However, it was a little problematic to let go of the snorkel to talk. it would be perfect for a silent suiter, but I'm lucky that so many people wanted to talk to me. I'd like to try and replace the snorkel mouth with something I can talk in, but I'm not sure what to use. It should be something that can create a seal to keep my breath out of the head. it's possible that I will be able to make something with a painter's mask.
I hid the "seam" between the head and my body with two yards of tulle tied into a big bow and sewn down onto the neck so that it wouldn't move around.
I hope that if you try making something similar you'll show it to me!

Seb helmets: the long awaited sequel
Mugello 2020:
Tumblr media
Not on Seb's website, but still on ferraris instagram, Seb had this helmet to celebrate Ferraris 1000th gp. (in the same week, he announced his move to aston martin)
Turkish GP 2021
Tumblr media
a beautiful sea creature design to remind us to save our oceans. i personally really love the turtles
Singapore GP 2022
Tumblr media
gorgeous neon rainbow on super light absorbent black design. now it can be said with finality (as of yet): jens munser and sebastian vettel never missed when it was about helmets in singapore. i have a keychain of this helmet so I'm especially fond of it.
British GP 2022
Tumblr media
ngl i cried a bit just from pulling those pictures up again. he is so loved. i love how even though we know barely anything about sebs family, this helmet shows so much personality from his kids and hanna. this is the most gorgeous helmet of them all. however, shoutout to the subtle nigel mansell design hed have driven with if his family hadn't made a secret birthday helmet for him.
Abu Dhabi 2022
Tumblr media
I'm so so proud to be a fan of a driver who loves his fans. The few times I've met Seb, he's always taken his time - often more than allotted - to greet as many people as he could, pose for pictures sign things etc. He feels very genuine in showing his appreciation for his fans and so I think this helmet is a beautiful monument to the love people have for him. He is deeply beloved and in turn, he loves his fans and has shown this from his retirement message that was so much more personal than a press release, over the time between the announcement to his last race and beyond. This helmet is a testament to the way we love Seb and the way he loves us back.
USGP 2022
Tumblr media
Peace and Love baby! this gorgeous woodstock inspired piece is incredibly gaudy and glittery and very unapologetically so. i love it deeply but opinions were very split on it
Japan 2022
Tumblr media
a very cleverly done thank you to helmet provider arai. who doesn't love opening packages? especially one as beautiful as this one! it's a bit sad to not have the little ninja mascot on the helmet for sebs last f1 race in japan, however, with his 2022 helmet designs being so beautiful and elevated, he outgrew it a bit. important side note about japan 2022 here is sebs battle to the line with fernando alonso.
Hungary 2021
Tumblr media
Let us remember this GP for the joy it brought and not the desperation that followed. Seb came, saw and served cunt in his rainbow sneakers, rainbow shirt, rainbow mask and rainbow helmet. He drove to the podium and nothing bad or terrible happened after.
Brazil 2022
Tumblr media
the intertwined bars of the german and then, further up, the climate change flag (and the brazilian one on top) are reminiscent of the 2018 german gp helmet!
Austria 2022
Tumblr media
The iconic bee helmet! I actually have a few pics of this one from the Austrian GP that i took myself. Even though that GP specifically sucked so hard it made Seb sway towards retiring, the helmet is beautiful and iconic.
Honourable Mentions:
- Miami 2022: the snorkel helmet! first GP underwater, also premiering sebs GIGANTICALLY OVERSIZED climate change t shirt also found in his shoo
- Canada 2022: Canadas Climate Crimes/ stop mining tar sands. this one made a politician on twitter sooooo angry. it lost her rant a bit of credibility that she directly profited from the tar sand mining.
- LGBTQ+ CLEAN OUR OCEANS (Abu Dhabi 2021): the world's to do list. i mostly have to laugh at the unlucky placement of the lgbtq+ and the clean our oceans phrase. why are the cishets exempt from cleaning our oceans? questionable.
- Race4Women: Saudi Arabia 2021. a return of the beautiful day-glow paint.
almost all of sebs helmets are either on the sebsite or deep in jens munsers archives (difficult but not impossible to find)

SAW WITH SHARKS!!!
SAW!!!!! WITH!!!!! SHARKS!!!!!
The objective coolness of traps that use sharks, because like, avoiding falling into a shark pit, or being in a 47 Metres Down type situation, that would be SICK
But also just. THE SILLINESS. One of the subjects is underwater and so in the video feed Billy is wearing a snorkel and a mask!!!!!
And the fact that sharks DON'T ACTUALLY LIKE THE TASTE OF HUMANS so they tend to just take one or two bites and then leave the rest so that would lead to some fun corpse reveals XD
John is on vacation and this is his new experimental run XD he's somewhere on a beach wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sipping a cocktail
Hoffman is trudging through tropical weather wearing a full three piece suit for some fucking reason
THERE IS A FULL REENACTMENT OF THE CHUM SCENE FROM JAWS WITH HOFFMAN AND LAWRENCE ON A BOAT LURING IN SHARKS FOR THE TRAPS
(Logan is also there because he wanted to be included) (Melissa is having a GREAT time at the resort with her babysitter)
I COULD KEEP GOING

oh hi could i ask for the prompt thing
avatrice + this line i read in a poem today that goes: “we fell in love in midair.”
hope you are having a good day!
Every morning, Beatrice has a routine. She wakes in the pre-dawn light and goes down to the ocean pool by her apartment, where the concrete walls are hewn into the eroded tidepools, and she does twenty laps. Sometimes there are fish, in the pool. Sometimes she scares them away. She likes when she doesn't; when they stay, flitting and silver-specked beneath her, and she gets to watch them. On those days, slicing her arms with each stroke doesn't feel violent. She needs to be violent, sometimes, but not here. Not with them. She's buoyant, in the salt water.
After her swim, she goes back to her apartment and showers. Some days, she would like to watch the sun rise properly, cresting and shifting over the waves. Mary tells her she should. But then she would be late. So she she lets the sun rise behind the shorefront buildings, casting shadows on the tarmac, as she walks to her apartment, showers the salt from her skin, changes into her clothes, and goes to work.
One night, a serious storm system moves in. She leaves the hospital where she works late - skeletal hands of lightning beat at the dark sky as she takes the train home. When she rises to rain still hammering on the windows, she knows before she checks that the tide will be high, the sea too churned. While she still puts on her swimmers, she grabs an umbrella and heads in the opposite direction of the beach.
Beatrice prefers ocean pools, but Beatrice is practical: she has a backup indoor pool that she visits when her beach routine is untenable, like when the surf is rough, the pool gets crowded by once-in-a-whilers, or a juvenile crested hornshark slips in and can't figure out how to slip out.
She checks in at the front desk and leaves her bag in the locker room. The main room of the pool, echoey and muggy and tiled, fills Beatrice's nose with chlorine. There are less usuals than she expects to see; most must have seen the sheets of rain and decided to roll over for another forty minutes of sleep.
She steps into the pool. She starts her laps.
About halfway through, she's aware of a presence in the lane next to her. Small body; good technique; swimming slowly, with a snorkel. She has on a bright red one-piece that catches Beatrice's eye. Beatrice doesn't need to take a break - shouldn't take a break - she has twelve more laps to get through and then she has to get out and return home and shower and go to the hospital and change into her scrubs and do her rounds and -
Beatrices pauses, at the end of her lane. She watches the young woman in the red swimmers.
The palms of her hands lift, gently cupping the air before they glide back into the water. Her pointed toes kick at the water, sending up droplets. When she gets to the end of the lane, instead of flip turning like Beatrice does, she stops. She lifts up her goggled mask, letting out the drips that broke the seal, and lets the mouthpiece of the snorkel fall inelegantly from her mouth. Her hair, slick and dark, tucks behind her ears.
She notices Beatrice watching. She looks behind her, checking for someone behind her. When she sees nobody, her mouth tips up on one side, into a grin. She waves. She has goggle marks around her mouth and the bridge of her nose, framing bright eyes.
Hesitantly, Beatrice waves back.
The young woman's smile widens.
Something hot and thick burns through her body, catching her unawares. She sinks into the cool water again. Contain yourself, she hears, in a familiar voice that's not her own.
Twelve more laps to go. She starts swimming; eleven more laps to go. Ten. Nine.
The girl in the lane beside her, the girl in the bright red, swims backstroke now. Beatrice stares at the bottom of the pool, absent her fish, and sees the snorkel, cast onto the lip of the pool deck.
Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four.
The girl gets out. Beatrice misses her. She feels an unexplainable frustration building inside. She hates the repetition of the stroke, the steady beat that's usually comforting. She slices her hand through the water. It's banal. It's violent.
She doesn't want to finish. She doesn't want to responsibly walk back to her apartment and do her rounds. She wants to poke her head above the water and see where the girl went, to see if the snorkel is all plastic angles against the NO RUNNING sign on the deck.
To see if she smiles at Beatrice again.
Beatrice-
Beatrice-
Beatrice stops. She doesn't pause; she stops. She stops and she pokes her head out of the pool and she looks around.
Next to the lap pool is the open swim pool, which usually stays closed until the family hours open later in the morning. The girl has clearly sweet-talked her way into something, because the attendants pay her no mind even though she has trespassed well into the off-limits space.
The girl sits on the edge of the diving board. Her legs dangle off. She swings her legs, slightly, and has a small smile at the slight bounce that reverberates up and down the board. Her eyes are closed.
Beatrice stays with the water up to her neck, watching her. She doesn't know if she could get out, could feel the gravity of it all pressing down on her, could feel her you're out of the pool now you need to towel off now you need to walk home routines kick in at the abandonment of her in the pool stage of her day, and fight herself well enough to stay.
The girl stands up on the diving board. She lets the board bounce. Once, twice. She catches Beatrice watching her and she beams. Then she winks; then she jumps, not dives, and falls, full pencil, arms pointed above her, into the deep end. There's barely a splash as her head follows her feet into the water.
It's incredibly silly. Beatrice is immediately endeared.
The girl paddles over to the wall. She climbs halfway up the in-cut ladder, hand gripped to the metal bar, then looks at Beatrice. "Hey," she says.
Beatrice can't contain herself. "Hello."
"Okay, be honest. How many points?"
Beatrice frowns.
"Like, I had basically no splash! That's gotta count for something."
"Oh," Beatrice says. She pauses. "Eight," she decides.
"Eight!" The girl grins. "Eight for eigh-va. You're tough to impress. One sec, one sec."
She climbs out of the pool. On her back, Beatrice sees the silvery-white lines of scar tissue, roiling across her tanned skin.
"I'm not, like, super supposed to do this," the girl - Ava, presumably - says, with a touch of sheepishness, as though Beatrice asked, but Beatrice also hasn't moved, hasn't resumed her laps, hasn't left. Ava walks out onto the edge of the diving board again. It's a low diving board, meant for young kids, but Beatrice still has to tip her chin to see her. Light from the skylight reflects on the water, rippling back up across her face. "It's fun, though. You ready?"
To watch? Beatrice has watched, and repented for watching, her whole life. For something else? Water drips from Ava's ankles, to the board. Beatrice has no idea what she'll be agreeing to, if she says yes. She swallows. "Out of ten?" she asks.
"That's the classic."
"Alright," Beatrice agrees. Her words feel round, heavy, next to Ava's slant. "I'll prepare myself."
Ava laughs. It's a joke, and not just by Beatrice's dry tone; Beatrice has prepared herself for everything possible since she was fourteen years old, maybe even before that, but suddenly she doesn't think she can possibly prepare herself for this.
Ava leaps from the diving board. Her knees come up. They tuck to her chest, clasped with her spread hands. Her grin spreads so wide, her nose scrunching, and she closes her eyes in mid-air, whooping. The sound echoes off the tiles, reverberates through Beatrice's chest. Beatrice stares at her; at her freedom, at her joy. She dangles in the air above the pool.
Beatrice has a moment of imagining so visceral, so subconscious, that she feels it sear through her untranslatable.
Ava smashes to the water. Concentric ripples grow, smack noisily against the sides. In the bullseye of her impact, she surfaces, the back of her head to Beatrice. She scrubs water out of her eyes. Then she casts around, spinning on her treading legs to find Beatrice.
"So?"
Beatrice blinks. Right. Out of ten. She swallows. "Nine."
"Nine? Jeez, what's a girl gotta do?"
"Only God is perfect." Beatrice says it deadpan, with the calibrated weight of seventeen years of Catholic education. "To regard anyone else as such would be to do a disservice to His name."
Ava's eyes widen fractionally. Her limbs still. She starts to sink.
The corner of Beatrice's mouth crooks.
"Oh, that was- I was raised by nuns, you can't get a girl like that!"
"You thought your cannonball was divine, then?"
"Uh, yeah!" Ava kicks herself over to the wall. She loops her arm around the ladder handle and points at herself with the other. "Made in God's image to fuck shit up."
Beatrice looks down, amused.
"So, I haven't seen you here before." Ava gets out, walks between the pools. She plops down beside Beatrice, her legs hanging into the water of the lane she'd been in before.
Beatrice's eyes are at the height of her thighs, where they press into the lip of the pool. Her toenails are painted, sloppily, ten different colors. She can't keep looking there, so she flicks her eyes up to Ava's face. "I swim at the beach," she says, clearing her throat. "In the ocean pool."
"Mm. No diving board at the ocean pool."
"No, there isn't."
"So...wanna give it a try here?"
Beatrice hesitates. She looks to the attendants through the window. She looks at the board, stilled again. She opens her mouth.
"No diving," Ava clarifies. "Huge risk of spinal injury, if you don't know what you're doing. But just…jumping, you know?"
Beatrice does know what she's doing; Beatrice has dived from ten foot platforms and off the back of boats in full scuba gear. She doesn't say so.
Ava gives her hopeful, uncertain eyes.
Beatrice should go to work. Beatrice is late for work. Beatrice needs to contain herself, be practical, get her feet back on the ground-
Beatrice nods, smiling slightly. "I'll do my best," she says.
"Fuck yeah," Ava says, surprise and delight washing together. She has freckles on her shoulders, and a tiny scar on her left cheek.
She offers Beatrice a hand, and Beatrice takes it, warm and wet and small. She presses her other palm to the ledge of the pool and pushes her body up onto the deck. She looks into Ava's brown eyes before she lets go.
The warm air chills against Beatrice's skin as she walks over to the diving board. She steps onto the rough, treaded rungs. She feels the board bend under her weight as she walks out. Looking down at the other pool, she finds Ava watching her.
She smiles at her, small. Ava grins.
Tomorrow, Beatrice thinks, she'd like to stay at the beach to watch the sunrise. She wants to show this girl the sunrise.
She jumps.

Mara went faithfully to her therapy appointments and after a few months, her therapist convinced her to go for a swim in the shallow water between the islands. Mason accompanied her and while she was swimming, he snorkeled for shells. When he found one, Mara's muscle memory took hold. She donned her mask and they spent the afternoon snorkeling. Mara felt more like herself when she was underwater. It felt like finding a missing puzzle piece.

That little dude in the sprite can reaching out is Palmer Station AU Lilith’s childhood encapsulated in one gif.
Well done.
i am once again asking everyone to go watch My Octopus Teacher. it’s the octopus documentary of all time (to me).
and once you have done that, just imagine lilith dragged away from her football and her sea kayaking to some dusty old house facing into the cold atlantic. it’s one of her family’s many scattered properties, this one built in the 80s when her mother was happy and her father was alive.
lilith trying to pick up the local language but mostly just staring at people, stork-like in the stupid sundresses her mother stuffs her into every day.
escaping down to the shore, to an empty stretch of beach. shedding shoes and dress as she runs down towards the waterline like spiderman running toward the sound of sirens. crashing in and swimming out, out through the first freezing shock of atlantic water, battling the current, a tiny body lost in the heave and the noise of the waves.
but reaching that calm spot and, below it, the kelp forest. taking a deep breath as she treads water, orienting herself against the sky, and then diving down. into that alien world of light tinged green & yellow by the long kelp threading up towards the surface.
just exploring, initially, holding her breath for longer and longer. fixing a tourist’s discarded snorkeling mask & wearing it to keep grit and the salt sting mostly out of her eyes. finding sea urchins and abalone and nudibranchs and jellyfish.
but then coming across an octopus. an odd little creature, wearing a suit of shell armour and carrying one huge bright piece of shell out in front like a shield.
watching it day after day until eventually she’s watching it curl its arms around her hands to taste them. and she’s not so brave as to watch pyjama sharks menace her friend, scolding them away and trying to make herself look big. carrying a knife from her father’s old wooden box, which also contained his binoculars and a torn-up wetsuit and a bunch of old film she can’t figure out how to play.
but then her mother takes her back home. and the next summer there’s no sign of her old friend, just an abandoned lair and the piece of shell she gifted to her octopus, with the words Lil + Octi written on it in permanent marker, some of it worn away by the waves but the shell itself tucked carefully into the nest of stone and sand, like a grave marker or a parting gift

I HAVE QUESTIONS FOR THE MER AU
Okay okay okay
So tell me. How do Mers communicate in this? We got human speech and mix of chirps and clicks or how we going?
In relation to this question can they speak under water or os it the clicks?
Mer types: we talking standard mer shape and different colours or are mers sizes and stuff based on seas creatures? Eg. Whale mer= big and salmon mer= small etc etc.
Mer aging: they age like normal people or do mer pups progress faster? GIVE ME AN IDEA!
And and and ages for our characters! What are they?
What’s Wilbur’s intentions for asking the questions and stuff? I’d he studying for school or personal reasons?
Is Wilbur alone or does he have a family that he’s been kidnapped from?
Annnnnnnd what are they gonna do with him in the deep? I NEED MORE OF A HINT BRICK!!!
Okay so as you can see I really like met fics so I hope these questions aren’t too much. Thank you for answering!!!!🍭🍭🍭🍭
I HAVE ANSWERS!!!!!
clicks, whistles, trills ,, all that fun stuff is definitely a default. it's a known way of communication, but sometimes if things are more chill and relaxed they'll use the languages that they've learned from nearby humans, and if it's more formal, or if they're in a rush, or some other scenarios they'll trill 'n click. so it's a mix of both of them!
they can speak underwater, but they have to have the technology to do so. i'm thinking of some kind of mask-like thing that lets them have the air to talk. which is used very sparingly cause yk the air is kind of limited fdbfjsc ,,, so they basically have snorkels if they really wanna talk.
mmm well there is the standard mer shape with just a normal mermaid tail, which is what tommy has, and what some of the other ones do, but say techno would have that and a mix of other tenticles and super sharp pieces that are kind of like a leviathan or some kind of sea monster. so i don't really have a good answer for this eueueu,,, i kinda want it to be like a fingerprint how every one is different and unique but that technically wouldn't make sense.....unless i just roll with 'it's just a magical world' 😔 tldr: it's not sea creature based but there are some features of them. also tbd.
i'd say like normal people! they go through juvenile states a little bit quicker but it's pretty similar. also mer's have long lifespans in this!
tommy would be like 16, which technically in mer years would be around 19-20 so the human againg to mer aging ratio isn't too drastic ,, wilbur is 23, phil is an ungodly age (/j, he's like 100-110), and techno is a little older than phil.
wilbur's intentions are more personal than anything, cause he really just has an interest in mermaids! funky guy :3 also he doesn't really do anything with his studies, but he would like to put his knowledge somewhere, although he doesn't want to reveal the species' lifestyle to preserve their privacy ,,
wilbur lives alone in the beachhouse, which is off of a relatively small town. he'd dropped out of high school, then never bothered with anything else. he occasionally meets with high school friends (i'm thinking jack and niki, maybe dream/dteam ? his family lives off in a big city pretty far away but they have not abandoned him!
I DON'T KNOW ! what will they do? :3 i will say that he eventually gets a makeshift tail made out of cloth, crab shells, normal shells, and other trinkets tho ,, so it's long-term. or maybe it's wilbur's choice. who knows! :3 (i'm saying this because i have no idea /hj)
thank you for the questions becky !!!!!!!!!!! mer aus are so fun. i love drawing tails because it lets me not draw legs :DDDD

The M/Y Passion
We and our fellow travelers agree that the description of the Passion had at least something to do with why we picked this trip. The amount of space we have for only 11 passengers is pretty amazing. The Passion is spacious, accommodates 14 guests plus crew, with three primary decks. There’s also an upper deck with two hot tubs that doesn’t get much use because it’s so dang hot with no canopy or other shield from the sun! (We’ve heard it is used more in the summer when waters are cooler and guests use the hot tubs after snorkeling.) Most guest cabins are on the lower deck with portholes (ours), with a few on upper decks with full windows. The TV (lower) lounge/library and indoor dining room are on the middle deck with the galley toward the bow and a small area where we can air dry cloths outside all the way forward. The upper deck is our favorite for hangin’ with all floor-to-ceiling windows and sliders that lead to the back deck with covered outdoor dining table. At the bow is a small lounging area with comfy seats, again typically too hot to enjoy.
The Routine and Ecotravel
In our travels, we’ve often found that, even with daily variety, there’s a common routine and formula the guides follow to keep things rolling. That is certainly the case on the Passion. Any given day’s activities start the evening before with The Big Reveal of the next day’s activities. Carolina is reluctant to lay out the itinerary too far in advance, probably to ensure we focus on the here and now and, frankly, so she doesn’t have to repeat herself a bunch of times. For those of us who need reminders, there’s a white board on the back deck with the schedule and key information for each activity, as well as key information.
Hikes are generally early morning and late afternoon. Snorkeling is late morning and post-lunch and nap time when it’s too hot to do anything else. Occasionally, we’ve had a kayaking activity added to the mix.
A couple of pieces of information are key to heading out… For hiking, is the start a wet landing (climb out of the panga into a few inches of water on a beach) or dry landing (typically onto rocks)? One wouldn’t want a wet landing and then have to hike in soggy shoes. Footwear selection, is assuredly the most important part of dressing for any particular outing! A wet landing for a hike on lava rocks means riding to the landing barefoot with solid, closed-toe shoes to don on dry land. Some wet landings are done in water shoes or sandals. For snorkeling, is it from the panga or the beach? From the panga, we pick up our numbered mesh bag of fins, mask and snorkel on the way to the panga. This is the only time we don’t wear life vests in the panga, since we’re already in bathing attire, without shoes and backpacks to weigh us down. When we arrive at the location, we defog our goggles with a squirt of bio-safe soap from the ever supportive crew, suit up and slide over the side of the panga. Terrifying to think about, but in practice, easy entry — all in, all at once. At the end, we climb back on the panga and head for the Passion. Back on board, Roberto is waiting with a tray of fresh juice or herbal tea to sip while we rinse off. Snorkeling from the beach is basically the same, except for the sand factor. On arriving back to the Passion, one crew member, even the captain at times, is waiting with a hose to get any last grains off of feet. Crew seem to prefer taking care of our snorkel gear.
There is a big focus on cleanness and tidiness across the board. In addition to being attuned to ecologically safe practices (bio-safe shampoo and soap in the rooms, etc.), we got clean white bath towels daily and clean, red drying-off/beach towels after every snorkeling trip. On embarkation, shoes were separated into those that we went ashore in -which stayed in cubbies on the back deck, and slippers or shoes worn around the boat – no sand scratching those lovely teak floors! We hung bathing suits and other wet stuff on the front deck to dry (first 2 lines then a 3rd when the 11 of us couldn’t fill all our stuff in). There was a washer/dryer on board (believe near the engine room), but only intended for staff use for the red towels, presumably to save energy and water from the on-board desalination plant. We frequently saw staff scrubbing places on the boat and washing windows for clear viewing, and the galley always looked tidy and clean. And ah, the food presentation and table settings were always impeccable – linen napkins and colorful placemats.

Two for the price of one (as in Cattanooga Cats headcannon)
Now, for the Cave Cat's History Lesson: The first passionate sun worshipper was Scoots Phlunk ... who was also the first to see the value of freediving naked.
Deployment of Scoots' Magic Crayon we'd love to see: Scoots coming up with one-piece mask/snorkel combis for his bandmates (Kitty Jo and Teeny Tim included) ahead of a weekend at a "divin' hole" spring such as they're fond of.

A Beginner’s Guide to Water Sports Equipment: What You Need to Get Started
Water sports have long been a popular way to enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and experience the thrill of being on (or in) the water. Whether you’re hitting the waves for a surf session, paddling along a quiet river, or diving into the depths of the ocean, the right equipment can make all the difference in both performance and safety.
If you're just dipping your toes into water sports and feeling overwhelmed by the sheer variety of gear, you're not alone! This guide will break down some of the most essential water sports equipment so you can hit the water prepared and ready to enjoy.
Tumblr media
1. Surfing: Board, Leash, and Wetsuit
If surfing has caught your eye, the first piece of equipment you'll need is a surfboard. There are different types of boards depending on your skill level, with foam boards being ideal for beginners due to their stability and buoyancy. As you progress, you might want to explore shortboards or longboards based on your preferences.
Equally important is the leash, which keeps the surfboard attached to your ankle, preventing it from floating away when you wipe out. Don't forget a wetsuit if you're in colder waters, as it provides insulation and protection from abrasions.
Pro Tip: For beginners, opt for a board that is longer, wider, and thicker for more balance and easier paddling.
2. Kayaking: Paddle, PFD, and Kayak
Kayaking is a versatile water sport that can be done on calm lakes, fast-moving rivers, or even the ocean. The main piece of equipment you'll need is, of course, a kayak. There are sit-in kayaks and sit-on-top kayaks, with the latter being more beginner-friendly due to their ease of use.
You'll also need a paddle, which is essential for maneuvering, and a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), commonly known as a life jacket, for safety. A dry bag is a great addition to store your valuables and keep them safe from water.
Pro Tip: When selecting a kayak, consider where you’ll be paddling. Shorter kayaks are great for maneuvering in rivers, while longer ones are better for gliding across open water.
3. Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): Board and Paddle
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has taken off in popularity in recent years due to its accessibility and full-body workout. A SUP board is larger and more stable than a surfboard, making it perfect for leisurely paddling or yoga on the water. You’ll also need a SUP paddle, which is longer than a kayaking paddle and designed for standing paddling.
Like surfing, you’ll want to wear a leash around your ankle to keep the board close if you fall off, and depending on the water temperature, a wetsuit may also be necessary.
Pro Tip: When standing on the board, keep your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent to help maintain balance.
4. Snorkeling: Mask, Snorkel, and Fins
Snorkeling allows you to explore underwater environments while staying at the surface. For this, you’ll need a mask, which provides a clear view underwater, a snorkel for easy breathing, and fins to help you glide through the water with ease.
If you’re snorkeling in tropical waters, a simple rash guard or swimwear is usually enough, but in colder waters, a wetsuit is advisable.
Pro Tip: Make sure your mask fits properly to avoid fogging or water leaks. A silicone skirt around the mask ensures a good seal against your skin.
5. Scuba Diving: Regulator, BCD, and Tank
Scuba diving is one of the most gear-intensive water sports but offers an unmatched experience of the underwater world. Essential equipment includes a regulator, which allows you to breathe from a tank, and a Buoyancy Control Device (BCD), which helps you manage your floatation at different depths.
Additionally, you'll need an air tank and dive computer to monitor your oxygen levels and dive time. Safety is paramount in scuba diving, so getting proper training and certification is a must before venturing into the deep.
Pro Tip: Always perform safety checks on your equipment before each dive and dive with a buddy for added security.
6. Wakeboarding and Waterskiing: Board/Skis, Rope, and Life Jacket
Wakeboarding and waterskiing combine the thrill of speed with the joy of gliding across the water. For wakeboarding, you’ll need a wakeboard with bindings to keep your feet secure, while waterskiing requires water skis, which are typically wider and designed to keep you afloat.
A tow rope is essential for being pulled by a boat, and a life jacket (PFD) is mandatory to keep you safe in case of a fall.
Pro Tip: Beginners should start with slower boat speeds until they become comfortable standing up and maneuvering on the water.
7. Sailing: Boat, Harness, and Life Jacket
Sailing is a dynamic water sport that requires not only physical skill but also a good understanding of wind and water conditions. A sailboat is obviously key, but you’ll also need a harness to keep yourself safely tethered to the boat in strong winds.
As with many other water sports, wearing a PFD is essential for safety. Depending on the type of sailing you’re doing, you may also want gloves to protect your hands from handling the ropes and a wet weather jacket to stay dry in rough conditions.
Pro Tip: Learn basic sailing knots such as the bowline and clove hitch, as they are essential for securing sails and handling ropes.
Final Thoughts
Water sports offer endless opportunities for fun, fitness, and adventure, but having the right equipment is crucial for maximizing your experience. Whether you’re surfing, paddling, diving, or sailing, investing in quality gear not only improves your performance but also ensures your safety.
Before jumping into any new water sport, take the time to learn about the equipment you’ll need and how to use it properly. And, as always, be mindful of weather and water conditions to stay safe while enjoying your time on the water.

Diving Cenotes in Tulum: An Unforgettable Adventure and What It Costs
Tulum, located on the stunning Riviera Maya in Mexico, is renowned for its beautiful beaches, Mayan ruins, and, perhaps most intriguingly, its cenotes. These natural sinkholes, filled with crystal-clear freshwater, offer a unique and otherworldly experience for divers. Cenotes are not only breathtakingly beautiful but also hold deep cultural and geological significance. If you’re planning to dive in these mystical waters, understanding the costs associated with the experience is essential.
1. What Are Cenotes?
Cenotes are natural sinkholes that occur when limestone bedrock collapses, revealing the groundwater beneath. These pools of water can be open to the sky, partially covered, or entirely underground. The Yucatán Peninsula, where Tulum is located, is dotted with thousands of cenotes, many of which were sacred to the ancient Maya, who believed they were portals to the underworld.
For divers, cenotes offer a unique opportunity to explore underwater caverns, tunnels, and stalactites in an environment unlike any other. The water in these cenotes is often incredibly clear due to natural filtration through the limestone, providing excellent visibility for underwater exploration.
2. Popular Cenotes for Diving in Tulum
While there are numerous cenotes to explore in the Tulum area, some are particularly popular among divers due to their unique formations and ease of access.
Cenote Dos Ojos: One of the most famous cenotes in the region, Dos Ojos is known for its extensive underwater cave system. The name "Dos Ojos" means "Two Eyes," referring to the two adjacent cenotes connected by a large cavern. This site is ideal for both beginner and advanced divers, offering different routes that range from easy swims to more challenging cave dives.
Cenote El Pit: El Pit is another popular cenote for diving, known for its dramatic depth and stunning light effects. This cenote is a vertical sinkhole, and as divers descend, they experience a breathtaking light show as sunlight filters through the water. El Pit is suitable for advanced divers due to its depth and the skills required to navigate it.
Cenote Calavera: Also known as the Temple of Doom, Cenote Calavera is a unique diving spot with three small openings at the surface. Divers can leap through these openings into the water below, creating an adrenaline-filled start to the dive. The cenote features large chambers and fascinating rock formations.
Gran Cenote: A favorite among snorkelers and divers alike, Gran Cenote offers shallow areas perfect for beginners as well as deeper sections for more experienced divers. The cenote is part of the Sac Actun system, one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world.
3. The Cost of Diving Cenotes in Tulum
The cost of diving cenotes tulum price can vary widely depending on factors such as the specific cenote, the dive shop, the number of dives, and whether you need to rent equipment. Below is a breakdown of the typical costs you can expect.
Single Dive Prices: A single cenote dive typically costs between $120 and $160 USD per person. This price usually includes transportation from Tulum, entrance fees to the cenote, a certified guide, and basic equipment rental (mask, fins, wetsuit, tanks, and weights). Some dive shops may charge slightly more for more famous cenotes like Dos Ojos or El Pit.
Multiple Dives and Packages: Many dive shops offer packages if you plan to dive multiple cenotes. For example, a two-dive package might range from $220 to $280 USD. If you’re looking to dive over several days, dive shops often provide discounted rates for multi-day dive packages.
Equipment Rental: If you don’t have your own diving gear, most dive shops in Tulum offer full equipment rentals. The cost for a full set typically ranges from $20 to $30 USD per day. If you only need specific items, individual gear pieces like regulators or BCDs can usually be rented separately.
Guided Tours: Diving in cenotes often requires a guide due to the complexity and potential hazards of the underwater cave systems. The cost of guided tours is generally included in the dive price, but it's worth confirming this with the dive shop. Some shops offer more personalized or private tours at an additional cost, which can range from $50 to $100 USD more per person.
Certification Courses: If you’re not yet a certified diver or want to take a specialized course, Tulum offers a range of diving certifications, including cave diving courses. Prices for open water certification start around $400 USD, while more advanced cave diving courses can go up to $1,000 USD or more, depending on the level and duration of the course.
4. Factors Affecting the Cost
Several factors can influence the price of diving cenotes in Tulum:
Season: Prices may vary depending on the season. The peak tourist season in Tulum is from December to April, during which prices may be slightly higher due to increased demand. If you plan to visit during the off-peak season, you might find better deals.
Dive Shop Reputation: More established and reputable dive shops might charge higher prices due to their experience, quality of service, and better equipment. It’s important to research and choose a dive shop with good reviews, as safety and experience are paramount when diving cenotes.
Group Size: Smaller group tours tend to be more expensive, but they offer a more personalized experience. Larger groups may cost less, but the experience can be less intimate and more crowded.
5. Additional Considerations
When planning your cenote diving adventure in Tulum, there are a few additional considerations to keep in mind:
Experience Level: Some cenotes are suitable for beginners, while others require advanced skills. Make sure to choose a cenote that matches your experience level. If you’re a beginner, consider taking a refresher course or starting with an easier dive before tackling more challenging cenotes.
Health and Safety: Diving in cenotes can be physically demanding, especially in confined spaces. Make sure you’re in good health, and always follow the safety guidelines provided by your dive shop and guide.
Environmental Responsibility: Cenotes are delicate ecosystems, and it’s important to dive responsibly. Avoid touching the formations, be mindful of your buoyancy, and follow all guidelines to protect these natural wonders.
6. Conclusion
Diving cenotes in Tulum is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers a unique glimpse into the underwater world of the Yucatán Peninsula. While the cost of diving can vary, the experience of exploring these crystal-clear waters, filled with ancient stalactites and caverns, is truly priceless. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a beginner, Tulum’s cenotes offer something for everyone. With the right preparation and understanding of the costs involved, you can ensure that your diving adventure is both safe and unforgettable.
