danny phantom episode 4-7 Thoughts: (under a readmore because, these got kinda long!)
-the outfit danny had to buy for dash's party. CLASSIC 2000S i cannot stop laughing. And also showing up to the party and everyone is dressed like the trio is hilarious. and further proof that everyone looks good dressed goth.
-dash has a closet full of cute lil bear plushies?? LOVE that. adorable. also his response to danny trashing his room fighting a ghost was SO valid if somone BROKE MY BED IN HALF ID BE PISSED TOO.
-technus being like 'oh smart, u should be a tutor!' then later being like 'forget tutor, be a teacher!' :) supportive king <3 I also really like his upgraded suit/design. AND SPOCK CAMEO??? HELLO??
-the music in this show is super. its so funky. I looked it up and the guy who does it, guy moon (awesome name) also did music for other cartoons like fairly odd parents, barnyard, chalkzone, billy & mandy, AND some actual movies like FIGHT CLUB??? the whiplash I got from reading that)
-sam being rich explains a lot about her, actually.
-I know the moral of the episode was supposed to be 'dont ditch your friends for popular people/spend a lot of money on clothes that arent You to Fit In'. but tbh. it wouldve been easy for danny to have been like 'well, okay, ill come but only if my friends can!' but I get. that hes 14. so. not a lot to say there.
-BOX GHOST IS BACK!!!!! also, danny sitting up and wearing the dress/wig/makeup. umm thats how I dress everyday LMFAO. unironically me. (hate the jokes that boil down to 'haha funney man in dress' tho. but this is a look)
Tumblr media
-jazz being protective of her brother once again being like NOOO YOU GUYS BETTER NOT STAKE OUT HIS (actually haunted) LOCKER!! shes aware of how people perceive him and she wants to help :( which is also probably why she told dash to invite him to that party even tho she had no interest in going!! she wants to help him out :(
-gotta say im with tucker on the whole 'should danny use his powers to get back at bullies' debate. 100% yes. let him teach kids to fight back. making dash throw his food at paulina out of the blue? no. but when hes actually about to pick on someone? yeah! for self defense? YEAH! if dash and his friends just threw food at him, I think rather than. idk doing sneaky shit with frogs he couldve just threw it back and not pulled punches if they tried to fight. I kNOOWWW its a kids show so they are like 'if u fight back ur just as bad!! violence bad!!' but. theyre HIS POWERS. WHO CARES.
-like my only gripe is that dash really isnt LEARNING ANYTHING WHEN DANNY GETS BACK AT HIM IN THE MOST PETTY INDIRECT WAYS. whatever they had to add a bully psa episode I guess. I hate it and I hate the way cartoons usually handle it because these methods simply Do Not Work. 'aND YouRE USinG YOur poWErs FOR EVill???!' this is Not Evil. even when poindexter takes dannys body, theyre only being 'nice' bc hes stealing soda for them!! bitches deserve what they get (nothing too brutal bc theyre high schoolers but damn, if they pick on danny he doesnt need to be the 'bigger person' he needs to start biting people)
-SAM TRYING TO SMUGGLE FROGS OUT OF THE BIO LAB?? girl in middle school when we had to dissect frogs we could opt out, also, they came to us already dead and preserved...
-sidney's lingo and the fact hes in black and white is sending me. also, danny is a ghost celebrity apparently for being a halfa?? ok. thats interesting to know
-the DENTIST BEING EXCITED ABOUT THE COTTON CANDY FLOOD IS THE FUNNIEST THING SO FAR.
-I LOOOVE the trope of 'wishes gone wrong'. not crazy about the stereotypical genie, or the use of the dreamcatcher looking design. (also, I KNOW theyre scientists but the way theyre handling a cold...are the fentons ANTIVAX)
-the genie. she. whitewished paulina. JKASDFHKJ. (the ghost literally just being hello kitty???? im dying) 'why do i feel that im special and wonderful? because I AM! <3' paulina ilu self worth queen. felt bad for her also getting possessed by (2) boys later who were arguing INSIDE HER. WTF.
-imagine being the guy trapped in his now flying car. he thought danny and tucker were HALUCINATIONS. imagine being trapped in a flying car with two, what you think are imaginary arguing 14 year olds convinced ur gonna die. i WOULD say this dude is gonna need so much therapy, but he seemed totally fine and excited when they landed (I would be happy too if a chicken was on my head. chickens rule) stoner rights
-sam's bat slippers??? iconic. SO cute.
-I think desiree's backstory is so :( do all ghosts have messed up sad backstories?? poindexter's was sad too...cannot imagine box ghost has any kind of fucked up backstory. but what if. his mom got pushed off cliffs by boxes...........a la cruella... anyway her 'no man may lay a hand on me' iconic. ilu
-I know danny has no concept of how much bras cost but my god dont attack tucker with some girls bra. those are so expensive.
-its really. well its not a GOOD THING he went into the portal and got fucked up, but its good danny was the one to do it rather than sam or tucker. because even tho he was being influenced by desiree and kept getting more malicious and it prob wasnt 100% him...he sucked as a ghost like most the people he 'pranked' were innocent ppl just Chillin and he didnt want to help anyone at all. I think danny is the most responsible out of them but also, hes 14 and shouldnt HAVE to feel obligated to fight every ghost. hes a good kid and wants to, but I also feel like he feels like...responsible for the portal turning on?? because his parents did give it up,, but it was an accident and not his fault (if anything, why was the on switch on the inside. why was it that easy. why was there no safety measures. that seems like smth OSHA needs to hear about). like thats my son. hes a good boy. and hes never done anything wrong in his life, ever. if anyone hurts him im killing everyone in this room and then myself. etc.
-danny's curfew is 10PM????? DUDE. when I was 14...shit I couldn't be out that late, I had to be back at like, 8 at the latest, and my parents had to know exactly where and who I was going with, AND i had to call/text them regularly...is this a case of my parents being overbearing, or the fentons sucking??? the only time i could EVER be out that late was if I was at an overnight sleepover or smth...
-the vultures have lil fezes. why do they have fezes...theyre so fuckin funny 'ask him for directions' 'I KNOW WHERE IM GOING' these ghost vultures are my new grandpas. pick them up, put them in the adopt box.
-'I wonder why those guys were trying to waste dad!' THEYRE GHOSTS. YOUR DAD HUNTS GHOSTS. why is that not a conclusion you'd immediately jump to??
-*jazz voice, clearly disgusted* WISCONSIN???
-mrs fenton with the lab coat and leg warmers and PERM. YESSS STYLISH.
-was going to say 'ew billionaire' @vlad but. super valid he used his powers to assumedly steal and cheat to get that money, thats how all billionaires do it! but ew hes a SIMP. and spending your billions on FOOTBALL STUFF?? you are Not Valid overall. I DO respect the fact you have a castle instead of a mansion. in wisconsin. if youre going to be stupidly rich might as well go all out, torches on the wall and all. I DO like his ghost form's little kitty ears. catman. and his cape! every design can benefit from a cape. and how different his forms look, like danny looks the EXACT SAME IN BOTH FORMS ASIDE FROM COLOR CHANGES. vlad's is like,, I could believe they were different people!! also I love the drama. but dude you are fighting a 14 year old. lame. also he was like, telling danny he wanted his mom and him and like, wanted him to renounce his dad?? WHAT ABOUT JAZZ?? bitch. those r MY kids and they are both important and special. I do agree they need better parents but thats not u sir <3
-I thought vlad's 'little badger' nickname for danny came from the football mascot of the packers, but google says they have NO MASCOT?? so now I'm like?? is it because his hair is sometimes black and sometimes white?? I hate to give him props but thats a PERFECT NICKNAME. theyre also tiny and vicious!
Tumblr media
-why did I get so excited that Skulker is back!! its been like. 2-3 eps LMAO. AND THE DAIRY KING. ICONIC I LOVE HIM. hes the nicest guy ever :) more nice ghosts please. danny cannot be fighting alone everytime with no ghost buds like every ghost being hostile sucks :(
-mr. fenton knew vlad was controlling him, but a few episodes ago he had no clue danny was doing the same thing...is it something about how malicious the ghost is?? he just seemed to think his memory had gaps the first time, this time he was INSTANTLY LIKE 'GHOST'. then again in this ep when danny did it again he was just slightly confused but not immediately freaking out like he did with vlad possessing him!!
-'my parents will accept ME NO MATTER WHAT' so. so why haven't you come out to them yet, danny?? if you really think that?? if theres no harm, and you're sure??? if vlad is a real problem, wouldnt that make dealing with him easier, to expose him???? SO WHY HAVENT YOU COME OUT YET?? COULD IT BE,, MAYBE YOU HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT WHETHER YOUR PARENTS ACTUALLY WILL ACCEPT YOU??? 🤔 ... 🏳‍🌈 I get why people say He Is Trans. I totally totally get u danny.
-sorta unrelated, but it just occurred to me in one of these eps they go to casper HIGH not casper middle school??? theyre 14?? dont highschools usually do ages 15-18? (I didnt go to hs so I might be wrong, if I am ignore this...) freshmen are usually 14-15, could just be a case of them not turning 15 yet but they will sometime in the school year (I say they because tucker said he was 14 too)? I know the show has 3 seasons, so by the end of it will they be older? thatd be neat but usually cartoon characters stay the same age...I love shows where you can see the characters age and grow up, though...three seasons seems like a long time to spend on like, 1 year...

Fashion Sportswear: Ivy Park
This essay was written in my first term at LCF. I was asked to focus on a specific garment and breakdown the context of that garment.
In this essay I will be exploring the makeup, purpose, historic, social and economic factors of a pair of Ivy Park tracksuit bottoms.
The chosen garment is made up of; 68% cotton, 30% polyester and 2% elastane. Fastenings include an elastic ribbed waistband and ankles, and two slip pockets (MandMDirect). This garment’s minimalism creates affordability and an emphasis on branding, through the bold lettering and contrast ‘Ivy Park’ draws attention, this will help keep the name in consumers' minds. It is a gendered garment due to the excess around the buttocks, slimmer fit around the legs and thicker waistband to slim the waist. The emphasis of the backside shows it’s made for slightly different body shapes than usual e.g. European ideals of slim bodies, this is due to the rise of ‘big booty’ culture backed by the African- American community and a backlash from the unhealthy and unattainable European ideal we see in high couture , this is an important branding idea because African- Americans are one of Ivy Park’s key demographics and tend not to look to Europe for their style but at people like themselves, like Beyoncé.
The history of sportswear is relatively short, the first sweatpants were created in the 1920s. For a long time sportswear was not considered ‘fashionable’, figure 2 shows a pair of sweatpants from the 1940s, worn by Bob Panagis in football practice for Oregon state College (Oregon State University, Pinterest). Sweatpants were utilitarian in design and not used outside the confines of exercise on a professional level e.g. sports teams. Through new designs, inventions and cultural evolution, sportswear has been taken on through popular culture and given a wider platform in fashion, this has been done through celebrity culture, advertisements and music, especially Hip- Hop. The first to include sports brands in music was the rap group RUN DMC in 1986, which led to an endorsement deal with Adidas, this first connection with popular music and sportswear has led the way for many celebrities and helped further their career and net worth tremendously (explained s2e4). Beyoncé has created some of the most iconic songs of the late 90s onwards, so her move to fashion sportswear was not unlike sportswear's own transition into fashion, a natural evolution to keep from becoming irrelevant in a throw away culture. The Key to creating something original is to combine two existing products and fuse them in a new, exciting way.
The brand Ivy Park hasn’t been around at all that long either, introduced in 2016. Though new, Ivy Park is well known, primarily due to the co-founder and face; Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and also to the other co-founder Sir Philip Green, chairman of Arcadia. Beyoncé is a multi talented performer, who in 2018, through Parkwood entertainment acquired total ownership of Ivy Park due to Green; “bullying his employees, belittling women, making derogatory comments about minorities, and then attempting to suppress news reports via an injunction, Green and his alleged actions are now at odds with everything Beyoncé and her brand have come to stand for.”(Okwodu, Vogue). The rise of the #metoo movement and celebrity culture made the movement from Arcadia to Adidas a requirement to keep the brand Ivy Park profitable and relevant. The social issue of sexual harassment was not new however the awareness, in 2018, had significantly risen because of #metoo and recent cases coming into public view, this combined with consumer interest of celebrities' views and opinions aligning with their own, contributes to product branding. Beyoncé being black and female, like many of her customers, directly affects how consumers will look at her and her affiliation with Philip Green.
Celebrity culture dictates that celebrities with wide reach like Beyoncé need to be a shining example for their name to be seen in a good light, celebrities who have done or allow socially unacceptable behaviour become ‘cancelled’ which has been known to damage or end celebrity careers whether they deserve it e.g. Harvey Weinstein or not (usually down to bad journalism). Putting celebrities on a pedestal gives power to the consumer and caters to their choices, which is a good thing, instead of promoting a despicable person and giving them money to carry on doing the things you disagree with, you are able to be informed and choose for yourself, so when buying a pair of Ivy Park sweatpants your indirectly promoting Beyoncé's stand against Philip Green’s actions and standing for the #metoo movement.
Ivy Park’s move from Topshop to Adidas was a social stance but also a reflection of economic change, high street brands have been in the decline for years with the rise of online shopping, “Store-based profit margins have more than halved over the past eight years, due to a combination of operating costs, legacy lease structures and changing shopping habits.”(Jashan, Retail Gazette) shops have been forced to close and Arcadia is no different, with a fall in profits. Sportswear brands like Adidas however are on the rise. The demand for sportswear, practical and fashionable, is greater than ever; Adidas “reported a 17% rise in first quarter net profit” (CNBC). Adidas is Europe's biggest sportswear brand and the world's second. Beyoncé is a huge name, she’s performed in 55 countries, acted in at least 13 movies and Ivy Park is already sold in 50 countries across the world making Beyoncé a global brand. These two companies coming together to create a product won't open new consumer markets, they undoubtedly already have similar markets, but will give these a unique product that is affordable, wearable and stylish.
A pair of Ivy Park Black sweatpants have a lot of interesting factors that makes it its own. The simple makeup of the sweatpants serves purpose but the fit serves style and specific body type. The history could be seen in two key stages; the need for sportswear to be non-restricting and then the appropriation by popular culture. Ivy Park as a brand, the history and social affiliations and action taken indirectly tells people what your ideals are when you're wearing them, what you believe in or don’t believe in because customers views are so important in the marketing strategy. Finally, the economic factor of these sweatpants, is affordability in a globalised world, giving the consumer something, they can personalise and attain is the key for a long running collaboration business.

Watches & Cars: Holiday Gift Guide for BMW Buyers
It’s December 1, so it’s officially the beginning of the Holiday Season. ‘Tis the season when most people scramble to stores, scour the interwebs and simply just search for gifts for their loved ones. If you’re searching for a gift for the car enthusiast in your life, and you’re willing to actually spend a decent bit of money on this deranged (we’re all a bit deranged) person, then we must recommend a good watch. Watches and cars go together like football (either kind) and beer. So we’ve compiled a list of watches that any car enthusiast would love and we’ve done so with various budgets in mind.
Watches are expensive, especially because they’re a bit superfluous in today’s world. If you just want to know the time, the mobile phone in your pocket can do that with far better accuracy than any watch. And if you really want it on your wrist, a $20 quartz Casio will tell time just as well as any high-priced watch. But what fun are those? Car enthusiasts want something real on their wrist, something mechanical. So to keep costs down, and still have something cool on the wrist, it’s always wise to pre-owned. Pre-owned watches offer far better value than new watches and are absolutely worth looking into, so long as you can guarantee authenticity.
Which is where StockX comes in. StockX is a viable option for gifts as all watches are in excellent condition and guaranteed authentic, and it makes buying pre-owned viable for the holidays and other occasions.
There are several pre-owned watch companies on the interwebs that offer premium, certified watches for affordable prices. However, StockX is a bit different, as it uses a stock market-style approach to its listings, showing truly transparent supply/demand pricing. So rather than go by traditional pricing, you browse by each watch’s lowest “Ask”.
It works similar to eBay, in the sense that it basically pairs buyers and seller together. The difference, though, is that StockX actually handles each watch sold and makes sure that it’s authentic and that its quality matches what the seller claims. So it’s far less frightening to buy a watch from StockX than eBay.
Under $500
Apple Watch
This might not be that exciting, because it seems like everyone has an Apple Watch these days, but that doesn’t make it a bad watch. While an Apple Watch isn’t as beautiful or interesting as any of the other watches on this list, it’s certainly just as helpful and probably even more so. Not only is it inexpensive but it can do so much more than a regular watch. So it’s actually a great tool that can be used for all sorts of stuff. However, it’s especially good for car enthusiasts because a lot of brand-new cars have apps that are compatible with the Apple Watch. So it’s actually quite helpful for many new car owners.
While used Apple Watches aren’t as enticing as used mechanical watches, they’re still cheaper. For instance, this Apple Watch Series 3 with GPS and Cellular has a lowest ask of $315, rather than the $409 from Apple brand new.
Under $1,000
Seiko Presage SPB045J1
For under $1,000, there may not be a better watch brand than Seiko and for that money, you can get something truly special. Sure, on the used market, you might see a Tag Heuer or Tudor squeak under the $1,000-mark but they’ll likely be highly-worn examples of those brands’ cheapest watches. Rather than do that, get a lightly-worn example of one of Seiko’s finer watches and the quality will be far better.
The Presage series is one of Seiko’s more expensive series of dress watches. This Presage SPB045J1 is a very pretty dress watch, perfect for when you take your significant other out to dinner in your BMW. It’s the classic color combo for a dress watch; black leather band, stainless steel case, white face, black hands and roman numerals. It also gets a power reserve sub-dial, which is really cool looking. I also personally love that crown, which looks elegant and sophisticated. Are there nicer dress watches? No doubt. But are there nicer dress watches for under $1,000? Not many. This watch can be had for $900.
Under $3,000
Tudor Black Bay M79230N
Tudor sometimes gets a bad reputation for being a Poor Man’s Rolex. Due to it being a sister brand of Rolex and significantly cheaper, it doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. However, the quality and attention to detail are right up there with its bigger-sister brand. The Tudor Black Bay is probably the most famous, due to its similarity to the Rolex Submariner. However, there’s a bit of a whiff of youth to the Tudor Black Bay. While every old-timer who retires gets a Rolex, the Black Bay seems a bit more stylish, a bit more youthful to own. So if you’re a more youthful enthusiast, or you’re buying for a more youthful enthusiast, the Tudor Black Bay might be the perfect choice.
It still gets an automatic movement with a 70-hour power reserve and is waterproof up to 200 meters. It’s also almost as tough and rugged as the Rolex Submariner, though it must be said that Tudor’s testing process isn’t as rigorous as Rolex’s, so it can’t be guaranteed to be as tough as the Submariner. Still, it’s an awesome watch, looks great, is made incredibly well and it only costs $2,800. That’s a lot less than a Rolex.
Under $5,000
Omega Speedmaster Professional 3573.50.00
The Omega Speedmaster Professional is one of the most iconic watches in the history of timekeeping. It’s the first and only watch to be worn on the moon. That’s because back in 1969, it was the only watch deemed tough enough by NASA to withstand the rigors of space travel. And you can buy one if you’d like. That alone is incredible, that anyone with enough money can own the very same watch that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore when they took those very first steps on the moon, as the very first humans to ever do so. Just that alone is worth the money.
But throw in the fact that it’s one of the best looking watches of all time, with its classic steel/black color scheme. There have been a lot of variations of the Speedmaster over the years, with Omega trying to capitalize on its heritage, but the silver and black Speedy Pro is the real deal. It can be worn with a stainless steel bracelet (as seen here) or with a NATO strap or leather band. All options are great, so long as the watch itself is a silver/black Speedy Pro with the hand-wound movement (currently Caliber 1861). Car enthusiasts rightly love the Speedy Pro because it’s not only great looking but it’s mechanically fascinating and has great heritage. Some snobs find it to be a bit typical but if it’s good enough for Neil Armstrong or Buzz Aldrin, it’s good enough for anyone. Especially at $4,410.
Under $10,000
Panerai Luminor 1950 GMT PAM 320
I was tempted to go either Rolex or IWC here, as those are two incredible and prestigious brands. However, I decided to go with Panerai, as it’s the popular choice right now. Also, as a gift, they’re really nice. They’re big, brash and beautiful, with typical Italian flare. Sure, the watches are actually made in Switzerland but the brand is Italian and that’s where its style comes from. Panerai’s watches are big, stylish and very well made and they’re very in at the moment.
This Luminor 1950 GMT is very cool. Its luminous hands/numerals/sticks and its cool crown guard are all signatures of the brand and make it very unique. If you’re looking for something high-end, well made, luxurious and different, it’s hard to pass up any Panerai. This one also happens to be a GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), giving another hand to indicate a second time-zone (even if it doesn’t actually have 24-hour indicators like a proper GMT should). So there’s some additional function to its form. At $7,400, it’s not cheap but it’s a great luxury watch and one that will stand out in the crowd of Rolexes and Tag Heuers.
Disclaimer: The watches above contain affiliate marketing links, but the selection of them was purely based on the items we believe are the coolest gifts.

12 Suede Jackets That Will Make Any Guy Feel Like A Style God
http://fashion-trendin.com/12-suede-jackets-that-will-make-any-guy-feel-like-a-style-god/
12 Suede Jackets That Will Make Any Guy Feel Like A Style God
There’s more than a little truth in the notion that men’s wardrobes often centre around practicality. But as an unarguable rule, we’re calling BS. How else do you explain the fact that suede jackets have long been seducing otherwise sensible men to part with their hard earned?
Sure, suede can be a pretty poor adversary for rain, but when equipped with a layer of protective spray, that’s more of a concern rather than a deal breaker. If you look past all of that hand-wringing about water damage, you’ll find that there are a lot of other things to love about the suede jacket.
For starters, it can breezily transition through seasons with the help of some sensible sartorial switch-outs. Then there’s its unrivalled ability to emit low-key luxury vibes without whiffing of a Premiership footballer who’s just received his first pay packet. And if you’ve ever felt a suede jacket’s hypnotic nap under your fingertips, you’ll know that it can give you all of the feels.
Most persuasive, though, is the fact that the suede jacket has found itself on the backs of some of the best-dressed men of all time. “Suede jackets were worn by the icons such as Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, and in recent years, they’ve been rediscovered by modern men too,” says Alex Field, head of menswear design at Reiss. “Not only are suede jackets timeless, but they’re also handy all year around, so there’s never not a good time to take the plunge.”
If you’re swayed by suede but aren’t sure how to get stuck in, fear not, because we’ve considered everything that you need to know about wearing the softest outerwear on the block.
How To Care For A Suede Jacket
Cool as it looks on a jacket, as any man who has endured the brutal experience of staining suede will know, the struggle to revive a piece to its former glory can often feel like trying to nail jelly to a wall.
In layman’s terms, suede is leather which has had its top layer removed to reveal the stupidly-soft fibres (its nap) beneath. This comes with the downside of being thinner and more porous than leather: hence why keeping those uninvited guests at bay can be a challenge.
Luckily, if you can work out the basics of how to operate a spray can, it’s plain sailing from thereon in. Get yourself a dedicated suede protector spray, apply lightly and evenly from six inches away from the surface of the jacket. Allow to dry naturally, then repeat for extra protection. Job = done.
If defences ever fall short and you need to go into damage limitation mode, make sure a suede brush (or a cleaning block for angrier stains) is within reach. Simply pray to the menswear gods while gently brushing with the grain of the jacket’s nap to stand the best chance of giving stubborn marks their marching orders.
If all of this sounds like a bit of a pain in the backside, then a nubuck jacket (which uses sanded down cow’s hide leather) should be your go-to as it’s more resilient than standard-issue suede.
Recommended Brands For Suede Jackets
AllSaints
It turns out that distressed leather jackets aren’t the only luxe outerwear item that AllSaints excels at. Just a brief thumb through the British brand’s rails will also throw up an impressive amount of stylish suede.
You’ll find everything from classic bikers and bombers to more unusual sheaths of suede (think field jackets and even blazers), all of which make the range on offer pretty hard to beat for sheer variety.
Buy Now: £328.00
Marks And Spencer
If you weren’t already aware of Marks and Spencer’s reputation as one of the best places to head for classic meets contemporary clothing, consider yourself now in on the secret.
It may not be the first place that enters your head when looking for a suede jacket, but after a quick gander at its pared-back and buttery-soft options, it might well just be the last.
Buy Now: £149.00
Mango
After a decent suede jacket at a decent price? Say no more, Mango has got you covered. The current outerwear crop at the Spanish retailer is full of designs we challenge anyone to find fault with.
Expect seventies-inspired colours (think rust and tan) in universally flattering shapes. For you, that means extremely unfavourable odds of buyer’s remorse, which is very good indeed.
Buy Now: £169.99
Oliver Spencer
We’ve long been infatuated by Oliver Spencer’s suede jackets, and we’re not the only ones. Celebrity fans including David Gandy, Oliver Cheshire and Richard Biedul have all been clad in the British designer’s gear.
Though prices may sit at the top end of the suede spectrum, designs from this menswear heavy hitter promise considered colourways, impossibly soft naps and some of the most timeless cuts ever achieved.
Buy Now: £740.00
boohooMAN
Suede’s production method means that it’s pretty pricey by default. Fortunately for those unable to be reckless with their finances, boohooMAN has plenty of imitation suede jackets with impressively convincing form.
The wallet-friendly etailer specialises in bright as you like colours, so it should be the first destination for those who want their soft outerwear to shout rather than whisper.
Buy Now: £35.00
Coach
Founded in 1941, American brand Coach began life as a family-run workshop specialising in leather goods. So needless to say, shop here and you can expect some of the softest naps known to man.
Microscopic attention to detail, a series of standout collaborations and enough design twists to add ‘Fashion Week-friendly’ to an already impressive CV should be reason enough to justify the price tag.
Buy Now: £1,300.00
Reiss

When you think of feminine ideals, what comes to mind? Venus? Twiggy? Marilyn Monroe’s hourglass curves? How about the Gibson Girl?
After the fussy bustles of the Victorian era, but before the flapper, there was the Gibson Girl. In the Edwardian era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she was it.
Gibson Girl, Charles Dana Gibson.
In the late 19th century, Charles Dana Gibson was an art school dropout determined to make it in the art world. He was clearly talented but his drawings left a lot to be desired and editors were, by and large, not interested. He worked to improve, though, and in 1886, sold a drawing to a new magazine called Life. It was just the encouragement he needed. He continued to accept small commissions and a few years later, sold another drawing to Life.
Two drawings in one magazine made him feel almost professional. So almost professional that he set up a studio in New York City where he studied other artists and continued to hone his craft. At the same time, the way that magazines were being produced changed. Magazine printing moved from wood engraving to photomechanical engraving. Where most pen and ink drawings had details too small for engravers to capture on wood, that wasn’t the case with this new technology. Gibson’s new-found style was perfectly suited to photomechanical engraving.

People loved Gibson’s style. The boldness of his pen strokes, his social commentary, and, most of all, these certain figures that became known as the “Gibson Girl” and “Gibson Man.”
In a 1910 New York Times interview, Gibson told the story of how the Gibson Girl was born. He told the interviewer, “The first time the name was used was in a story which The Century gave me to illustrate. It dealt with a certain type of girl, and in the manuscript, when it came to me, this type was called, I think, the ‘Goodrich Girl.’ I noticed that the word was written over an erasure in the manuscript wherever it occurred, but that did not impress me. Later, when — that ‘Gibson’ took the place of ‘Goodrich’ on the printed page — I saw what had been really done, I blushed. I have been blushing ever since. Let’s drop the ‘Gibson Girl.’ I don’t want to feel uncomfortable tonight.”
The Gibson Man was, like the figure above, ruggedly handsome and well-dressed. He was modeled after Gibson’s friend, war correspondent and adventurer, Richard Harding Davis. The Gibson Girl was delicately beautiful and was reportedly modeled after Gibson’s wife, Irene Langhorne Gibson, and sister, Josephine Gibson Knowlton.
Both figures were unmistakably Caucasian.
The Gibson Girl was more than an idealized version of feminity. The Gibson Girl, along with the Gibson Man, was a model of what the newly-forming middle class could strive to be. They were both attractive, happy, and youthful…and they made it all seem so attainable. Her look was natural, although she did wear corsets to give her a slim waist and voluptuous bust and hips. Her hair was often carefully piled on top of her head with tendrils framing the delicate features of her face giving her an ethereal look. It didn’t take long for women to begin copying her hairstyle and dress. Life began to imitate art.
She was the “new woman.” This woman participated in physical activities like tennis, golf, and bicycling. Gibson and other illustrators of the time promoted the idea that it was fashionable and, more importantly, socially acceptable for women to participate in physical activities. (Of course, they were often doing these activities in full skirts, long sleeves, and hats but we’re making progress here and that’s all I can ask for.)

Sometimes Gibson even drew women playing football. “The Coming Game”, 1895. Image via Gary W. Clark.
The Gibson Girl was also interested in the arts. She played instruments, sang, and was often an artist herself. In several drawings, you can see a Gibson Girl sketching or painting.
She even served on juries! In the early 20th century, women very rarely served on juries, and even then, it was only if the defendant was female (rarer still). But in Gibson’s drawings, women and men served in almost equal numbers and in one drawing, seen below, the jury was all women.

This was the time of the suffragette and the fight for women’s rights. Drawings like the all-female jury sent a clear message. In the United States, jury duty and voting are inextricably linked (in some jurisdictions, registering to vote puts your name in the jury duty pool but, contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be registered to vote to be selected for jury duty.)
She’s starting to sound a bit like Barbie, is she not?

The Gibson Girl was more assertive with men. She was self-assured and was not going being controlled by potential suitors. The use of the hatpin above wasn’t something Gibson made up, although he does present it in a striking way, making the man look like an insect the women are going to pin to a specimen board. No, sometimes women literally used hatpins to ward off unwanted advances.

While the Gibson Girl was usually seen in middle class to upper-middle class settings, she could be seen in high-society from time to time, like in the image above. Gibson loved to create satirical images, especially involving high-society. “The jury”, this time a group of upper-class women, stick their noses up at her while the men smile on. Although she’s not being wholly welcomed into their world, she seemingly handles it with grace. The Gibson Girl could navigate any social situation with ease.
The Gibson Girl appeared in songs, clothing lines, and even wallpaper designs (a version of which you can now purchase on Amazon because of course.) Other artists tried to create their own icons of feminity but none came close to the Gibson Girl. Gibson’s image of a beautiful young woman paired with his subtle social and political commentary was a hit. But Gibson said the Gibson Girl didn’t exist. In that 1910 interview with the New York Times, he said, “There isn’t any ‘Gibson Girl,’ but there are many thousands of American girls, and for that let us all thank God.” He seems to have seen the Gibson Girl in young American women.
The confident, stylish, do-it-all woman of the pre-war era paved the way for the next feminine ideal: the flapper. Of course, Gibson applied his signature style to the new “It Girl.”

In 1920, Gibson partnered with a few other artists to purchase Life Magazine. He held the majority of the shares until 1932 when, struggling to keep the magazine afloat due to competitors, he sold it. He retired that same year and took up oil painting, a medium he dabbled in decades before. Despite being one of the most admired and imitated illustrators of this period known as the Golden Age of Illustration, it didn’t take long for him and his beloved Gibson Girl to fall out of public consciousness. He suffered a heart attack in 1944 and died a few weeks later.
