Short hair is like that at the moment. Having a pixie is both low and high waiting. Low maintenance in the sense that you just wake up, style in a little texturing paste, and go.

However, such a short haircut would require a shape at least every 4 weeks. As for the color, copper is beautiful and one of my favorites, but is also high maintenance and would require a semi-permanent shine to look refreshing no less than every 4 weeks.

Pixies are so versatile, funny, sexy and elegant. I think practically any face shape can pull it off with styling and shape of the cut because there are so many creative and courteous pixie cuts. If you've always wanted to do something bold and spicy with your hair, do it.

This formulation went from an all over poppy red to a deeper base, with the new growth merging into a nice balayage blend. This could certainly be a strawberry and cream formula. We didn't make our foilyage too difficult. We still wanted to see all the great play of colors in contrast.

What I love about this look is how heavy but still portable it is! This is about as real copper red as you can achieve with permanent hair color, and the cut is a separate pixie! By separating, we cut everything below, about two inches above and below the ear, shorter.

We decided to disconnect because it allows the curls to meet more organically, but gives the illusion that it's not shorter below. This is my preferred way of cutting short hair to keep the shape very feminine with one edge!

Any advice for someone considering it?

I would talk about this color first as it can be more of a maintain than a more natural tone. We would talk about home care and what kind of color care products they would need to add to their routing. I prefer Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner for home care followed by Redken One United Leave-in.

I would then ask about the haircut, how do you feel with the display, your ears, your neck? – to ensure that they are comfortable with this style. An elongated neck, oval to heart-shaped face, and confidence will best wear this cut!

Next I would ask her what her hair regime looks like at home and explain that this is actually very easy as long as you use suitable products to use the curl and keep the curl at bay. We used the Redken curve line, starting with the ringlet gel for hold and the curl refiner cream for a soft finish. This will help with all crunchy after effects from the gel. We dried with the Sam Villa artist series dryer and diffuser nozzle for curly hair. As soon as it was dry, we finished with a half inch curling iron and wrapped all the rotten curls around to define extra.

Bright red highlights in brown hair

A delicious mix of strawberry, ginger and reddish brown tones. These bright red highlights combine dimension with layered hair.

How would you describe this look?

This was an existing balayage that I had done for my guest in a previous service. She wanted something different and fun without lightening her hair or compromising it. It is also a color that we can easily adjust again.

I used Pulp Riots Faction 8 boosters in their red (-66) orange (-44) and yellow (-22). I simply took an inch of randomized cut and applied color to saturate the center and ends. Then I feathered myself to mix like in a traditional balayage.

After processing, I cut them with softly textured layers not only to lighten their thick hair, but to show all the colors when they are styled. I then styled them with smoothing cream and took one inch sections to curl with a 1 1/4 curling iron. Once done, I used a wide tooth comb to break up the curls and then sprayed it with a medium hold hairspray.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For guests who want to go the red route, keep in mind that it is one of the tougher colors you need to keep in your hair and requires a lot of maintenance at home.

You need to use professional color safe and sulfate free products such as shampoo, conditioner, etc. Also, you need to keep shampooing a maximum of twice, and if you do, use cold / cool water. Warming tools for styling must also be on low heat.

Everyone can turn red when it comes to portability! Whether it's a fire truck red to a chocolate cherry, an all-over color, or just a few pops, everyone can wear it, just do it!

Good and Bad: Hair Extensions!

The moment has FINALLY arrived! The fabulous hair extensions that Milk + Blush sent me finally arrived in the mail (after the longest wait ever that involved the package being sent twice and us becoming friends with the regional manager of La Poste). It's been a little over a week now with these gorgeous babies and I wanted to share my full analysis (scroll to the end for a discount code if you decide to try them for yourself!).

I was nervous that hair extensions wouldn't work for me or that I wouldn't like how they felt on my head - I'm generally pretty low-maintenance and was worried that I would look like a poser with extra-long hair. I think I just kind of wrote them off in my late teens as something that would never be for me, and I really didn't think of them again until I got more into the blogging and social media world and realized how common they actually were and how many of my favorite creators rock them every day. Once I realized that, I couldn't stop thinking about wanting to try out having an instant 6 extra inches of hair!

So, I started researching what I wanted and which hair extension companies seemed the most high-quality. I was thrilled when I reached out to Milk + Blush and they responded that they love what I'm doing and would be happy to send some extensions to try, and the best part was through figuring out which shade of hair would work for me and then it being out of stock and then all the problems with the French post system, they had a fabulous friendly customer service team that was so easy to work with. I absolutely love their website and their extension sets, but I'll get into more details in a minute!

THE NEGATIVES

First, I wanted to get into some of the downsides of extensions (in general, not particular to Milk + Blush) that I wish I had seen more of on the internet before I got them. None of these things would have stopped me from getting them, but I just wish I had been more prepared!

They take longer to put in than you think. I am usually really, really low maintenance with my hair. Wash, air dry, throw a few curls in with my straightener and I'm good to go used to be my M.O., but those days are gone with extensions. I don't mind taking a little more time to install extensions and blend them with my hair, but I have struggled a bit with remembering to schedule that time in.

You'll feel them all day long. I'm sure over time I'll get more and more used to the feeling, and I have definitely gotten better at placing them in the most comfortable spots, but despite every extension brand raving about how comfortable their clip-ins are, I haven't gotten to the point yet where I just forget that they're there. If you're a gal who values comfort above all else, clip-in extensions might not be for you. Add to that the summer heat making your head full of added hair feel like your scalp is constantly overheating, and extensions can be a real commitment to the phrase "beauty is pain."

You'll simultaneously feel extra self-conscious and extra confident when you're wearing extensions. I've discovered that extensions are a huge confidence boost for me (which could be filed under the "positives" of extensions) - my husband's jaw literally hit the floor the first time I put them in and I've now decided I MUST grow my natural hair out starting yesterday. But, as confident and sexy and feminine as I feel with big beautiful long locks, I also have a nagging worry in the back of my mind all day long that all my tracks are showing and everyone knows my hair is fake and I look like a fool. I've become a little more high-maintenance - I tend to check the back of my head to make sure everything is as it should be whenever I use the restroom, where I never used to do that before. I'm extra careful with the way I move and very paranoid of any kind of wind. This is also something that might disappear the more I wear them, but this week I have definitely noticed the difference.

THE POSITIVES

Whew - now that the downsides of extensions are out of the way, let's talk about what I love about them! There are a lot of reasons extensions are now going to be a staple of my beauty routine, and here are just a few.

Confidence, confidence, confidence. I can't even tell you how long my hair journey has been. I have the most bland, middle-of-the-road hair naturally. It's slightly wavy, but more on one side of my head than the other, so I can't really just let it air dry and be done. It's not too thin but also not thick enough to look really great without some volumizing product, and it's a very average dark brown color with a reddish tint. Since dying it blonde, it's got a little more of the nice texture I wish it had without chemically damaging it, but it's just actually really hard to work with when it's totally natural. I've done just about every hair cut and color from a platinum blonde pixie to black shoulder-length with big blunt bangs (should I do a post chronicling all my crazy hairstyles sometime?) but the one thing I've never had is really long hair, because that requires years and years of careful hair care and slow growth. I've always had a bit of long hair envy - I know every girl out there has at least one friend with amazing crazy-long big hair that looks amazing no matter what - and to be able to clip in some extensions and suddenly BE that person is so cool! Sure, I take them out at the end of the day, but that just means more options, right? There's an extra bounce in my step as I strut down the street with a waterfall of perfect blonde curls swaying behind me.

There are endless hairstyle options. I have suddenly become a huge fan of hair tutorial videos because now, I can try all of them out like I never have been able to before! Milk + Blush has a fabulous Youtube channel that has tons of awesome tutorials on how to do different styles. I've never spent much time on hairstyles myself because my hair is honestly just too thin and short to do most things and make them look really good. Hair extensions fix that problem - even if you have longer hair, extensions will add that extra volume that take your updo's to the next level. It's seriously life-changing to instantly go from being able to do only small buns and sad half-do's to massive viking-style braids and insanely long ponytails.

You'll feel inspired to grow your hair out (or not). Extensions, for me, are bridging the gap between the hair I have and the hair I want to have. I did the math and in about a year and a half, my hair should be almost the length my extensions are now (my hair grows at about the average of 6 inches per year). That's great because these extensions should last about a year and at that point, I'll be ready to move from my current 16"-18" set to the longer 20"-22" set. I'm committing now to not cutting my hair for at least a year (besides a trim if my bleached ends get too ratty) and just seeing what I might have been missing out on this whole time by never letting my hair grow. If at that point I decide that natural long hair just isn't my thing, the best part about these is that I can instantly have long hair whenever I want and also keep my comfortable shoulder-length hair if I need to. How awesome is that??

Human hair extensions really do feel like regular hair. The parts clipped to your head may feel a little weird, but the quality of Milk + Blush extensions for the price really can't be beat. One thing I do love is running my fingers through my natural hair blended with my extensions and having it all feel like the same hair - just slightly better, thicker, silkier hair than my own very bleached locks. That is a major plus. I also love that I can wet them and let them air-dry into perfect loose waves that match my own (less consistent) ones. It makes it so easy to still rock perfect hair on days when I don't have a ton of time!

There are a few reasons for that. If you're not ready to hug the gray, make it go away. Using dye to hide grays is a fairly simple process, so while salon treatment is the safest bet, one can be made easily at home by following a few simple steps.

"This will counteract any warmth (the richness of color) that can develop while the color is being processed," said Scott Cornwall, painting expert and founder of the Scott Cornwall series.

"If you have shorter hair, you may only need a third of the mixed bottle to cover it," says Cornwall. "Using too much colorant can cause it to overlay, making the hair look too dark and saturated."

Do you want to step your hair coloring game in a notch? Try a bolder color like pink, green, or blue. (Don't quote us if your boss gives you your marching orders to try the “Merman”.)

With current supporters like Jared Leto, Zayn Malik, and Jaden Smith, turning the color wheel is a sure-fire way to get some attention, but you don't need a degree in color theory to know that this is a risky move.

Light colors work best with pre-lightened hair, so another job is best left to professionals if you're not interested in channeling Krusty the Clown.

"The easiest and most effective way to do this is to use water-based toner that gets lighter the longer you leave it on," says Mills. "Because it is water-based and has no harmful chemicals, it will not damage the condition of your hair."

Finally, unless you have an impressive range of hats (or a side gig as a child entertainer), this is a look that's best done with semi-permanent dyes.

Hair Dye

While men with shorter curly hair who are still growing don't have to worry much about color maintenance (your gray will show up again in a few weeks), boys with long hair and regular swimmers can take steps to slow down the fading.

"Use a color-preserving conditioner after every wash," says Cornwall. "And if you've bleached platinum hair or a light 'fashionable' color like artificial silver, gray, or pastel, try a blue or purple shampoo." Without this, the hair can very quickly start to turn yellow or green get as keratin (the fibrous protein that forms the hair structure) starts to show.

If you see some yellowing, break out some anti-yellow toner and continue washing with a blue shampoo daily to restore that icy white hue.

Joe Mills also recommends some weekly TLC. “Use a deep conditioning mask once a week to replenish the moisture in your hair. Dyeing is a chemical process, so you have to keep the hair in top condition to make it look fresh, ”he says.

Actually, I wouldn't recommend this light purple hair to many people. This client has a natural light blonde base in particular and works as a chemist in the hair industry and understands that she has to be gentle with her hair.

To press the hair and achieve these soft metallic silver tones can be dangerous for the health of the hair, especially those with naturally dark and / or curly hair. Although, if someone's hair can handle it, I would use gentle color-safe products (and a silver conditioner to keep the clay in place), a heat repellent (though preferably just not doing as much heat styling), and regular deep conditioning or mask-type treatments. In addition, a silk pillow case is a great thing for hair that has been processed.

It is not for the everyday ponytail type of gal as this can break these delicate silver hairs. I also let customers know that silver / white really shows lack of pigment in the skin tone, so if they are not makeup wearers, they will feel washed out without a bit of lipstick.

Light metallic purple

I would describe this type of platinum as silver purple. It is icy platinum that is almost iridescent in color. When it moves and in different lighting, you see pops of purple, silver, white and almost a shade of blue.

Because we made her platinum so modern, I wanted to add some vintage waves to make up for it. These were made with my Isa Professional flat iron. I took four 2.5 ″ horizontal sections around my head and created half-on-base curls with vertical 1.5 ″ partitions. Each lock was curled in the same direction and fixed on the head until it cooled. After that I brushed the hair and the finger waved the style until it formed. I styled it with Mydentity Mycontrol Spray and TIGI Afterparty.

This light purple hair dye was considered a pastel shade. Whenever we are dealing with soft pastel shades such as silver, blush, lilac, baby blue or even mint, to name just a few, we speak of a semi-permanent tone. This means that depending on the care, it can take just a few washings to a few weeks. Wash with cold water, only 1-2 times a week, and help with styling to extend the shade with zero to very low heat. If a customer wants to keep a color like this, they have to be willing to visit the salon once or twice a month with home care in between. The stylist can make a special tinted Olaplex # 3 (no matter what color the customer's hair is) or a tinted shampoo brand, like Viral, as take-home color care.

This is not a cheap hair color to achieve. The lighter the hair, the easier it will be to lift. Anything darker than a dark blonde can either expect a very long day in the salon or multiple visits to even reach that level of the blonde and not affect the cuticles of the hair. Talking to your stylist beforehand and running a strand test can help both the customer and the stylist determine if the look is even possible for the customer.

This particular customer was initially a natural blonde, so we were able to achieve this look safely in one day.

Vintage waves are a great option! Always classy and timeless. For an easier way to reach these waves, curling iron or a magic wand can be used at home to achieve a portable version. As long as all the curls around your head are pointing in the same direction, waves will appear. The closer the curl is to the scalp, the narrower the wave. Curl away from your head for a soft, subtle wave.

Note: the more layers and the shorter the hair, the more difficult it will be to achieve the uniform vintage wave look. However, if you do, go for it! You get a look with tons of body and a textured wave look.

In the front, I've put a few slides along the hairline to highlight the beautiful platinum and create this "coin". After processing, I then toned her hair with Matrix Color Sync 10p 10v and a shot of violet from the vinyl collection. We've added 18 "tape in extensions to add some length to their ends and voila.

That's what I love about a rooted blonde who offers just the right thing for variety without having to go completely dark. My client has shoulder-length hair, very thick (which is great for lighting because her hair can handle the process), and we always do the shallow iron shafts near the beach, leaving out the ends to give this "just so woken" look. I send my guests home with my favorite purple shampoo (Pulp Riot Barcelona) for home care. I also recommend to do a home care treatment once a week and oil it with a heat protection product.

Unicorn hair

How would you describe this look?

I call this look unicorn tears, but they are tears of joy.

I love using this diagonal separation technique with my color customers because it makes the color image look different no matter where the client chooses to separate it. Dividing them in the middle creates a ribbon effect. If they decide to share their hair on the side, then it will actually take on a more dramatic peekaboo effect.

I love Mydentity Hair Dye and it combines Sidekick, Olaplex! While this is possible with other brands, they were the foundation of that look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For all unicorn lovers out there! This look can be for anyone who is a unicorn in the heart.

My advice to potential customers who want to achieve this look: be patient, insist on Olaplex hair dye and expect to pay for such a look. It requires a lifting process that could require several appointments to reach the desired level of blonde. It may also require toners, treatments and glazes or full-color before the funny shades are even applied. The dark hair starts last longer and requires more steps to achieve pastel tones than naturally bright hair.

More importantly, knowing that pastel shades are a fragile color in each color line. They all tend to fade quickly. So, if this is the pastel-colored unicorn hair of your dreams, you just know that it's a highly effective color and needs regular care to preserve its color.

I always recommend to my pastel and direct dye customers to have their hair washed separately with cold water, to make a dry shampoo for their BFF, because too much washing makes it fade faster, and to use only sulfate-free, professional studio-grade shampoo and conditioner. Mydentity and Olaplex both have great shampoo and conditioner options for this need.

In addition, a small amount of heat is required for the styling. For the same reason as washing with cold water, heat can open the hair layer and cause the hair to slip to the right or even burn out. Cold means longevity.

This particular model had to start with level 3 hair. That was her third visit to me. On the second visit, we made 2 visits to sure brightening with Mydentity Brightener mixed with Olaplex, treatments, toners, glazes, and a platinum color to get an ice-white blonde. On the third visit, we reworked a platinum root and made a plating glaze with the same products to remove any remaining gold tones. Next came the Olaplex treatment and then all the Mydentity pastel direct dyes were used to achieve this pastel color. Each visit took between 5-7 hours to create tears of magic for our unicorn.

Peachy hair

How would you describe this look?

This reminds me of drinking pink lemonade on the terrace on a sunny day. I love the texture on this one long bob, which gives the hair volume, even though it does not have much hair. I also love the lightly dressed, rooted look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is the type of customer who is always interested in trying new things without disrupting the maintenance and care of pastel life. She is funny and open-minded and armed with a creative spirit. She likes to use her daily dose of blow-dry lotions, thickening products and hair sprays to really make the textures visible.

Blue green

How would you describe this look?

My client has come up with the name Cruella DeMermaid, which I think fits perfectly with this color!

I love the versatility of this color. I've cut out the two halves in a zigzag pattern so that it could look completely different depending on how she feels about how she shares her hair. The gentle waves and the dreamy color give me a serious summer beach atmosphere.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If a customer is considering using pastel, there are a few things he should consider. You need to lighten your hair in a very pale pale blond color to bring out the true tone. This requires patience and can be costly. Second, pastel tones tend to fade faster than saturated / jewel toned colors.

Be prepared to wash your hair less often, and always use a shampoo that is true to color and conditioner and very cold water to keep the color fresh.

Luckily, vibrant and pastel colors are not so off-limits anymore, so it's a great way to show the world who you are inside.

blues

How would you describe this look?

It's a really modern look. These colors are very common in Switzerland at the moment. I love this color because it really emphasizes the blue eye color.

It also washes very well. After 2 weeks it got greener and after 1 month it is now a light pastel mint color.

Any advice for someone considering it?

What you have to keep in mind is that these pastel colors do not last very long. They wash out faster than the natural colors like blonde or brown tones, so you probably need to go to the hair salon more often. You also have to bleach the hair to white-blond before you can make such a color, so your hair should be as healthy as possible.

It's also important to be a person who takes time to do the hair treatment, because after bleaching and adding hair dye, your hair needs more frequent treatments such as masks, a good color-gentle conditioner and moisturizing leave-in & styling products.

Short pastel hair

How would you describe this look?

This is an uplifting, fun and playful color in which all pastel colors come together to create a youthful look. My favorite thing about this color is how it fits seamlessly into the cut and how the colors complement each other perfectly.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The advice I would give to a customer who deals with fashion colors like this is to think about their care and portability. This image was taken four weeks after the application and all the tones used have been wonderfully turned into brighter versions of what they were originally.

Pastel pink ombre

How would you describe this look?

This look is a fun, creative way to rock some chewing gum pink! My favorite thing about this hair color is the sheen and contrast between her beautiful natural color and the way she turns into pastel pink. I styled them with a 1-inch wand from BedHead, using my fingers to give the locks a softer look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To get this beautiful look, you have to be blond at level 10 (inside a banana peel). It was easy to achieve this on her because her natural level is one

To uphold it, I would definitely recommend to take leave in conditioner, shine spray / serum and colorfast shampoo and conditioner. These colors can fade very quickly, depending on how often you wash your hair. Be aware that you may need to return in about 2 weeks to refresh the color. But for a woman with a funny / subtle attitude, it's all worth it!

Orange pastel
