For The Summer: Hermeto Pascoal / Airto Moreira / Flora Purim
Hey, a special treat for you today — a guest post from David "Observations of Deviance" Mittleman that digs into the Hermeto Pascoal / Airto Moreira / Flora Purim universe. For more, David is a great follow in various places — Twitter, YouTube and WFMU. Take it away!
Albert Ayler proclaimed, “Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe.” Like nothing else, the music of Brazil makes the scorching summer days tolerable and even joyous. Brazilian musical healers include “O Bruxo,” the Wizard, aka Hermeto Pascoal, and the meteoric musical couple that shot from his orbit, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. The Wizard is still going strong, living up to his sobriquet. On June 22, 2022 Pascoal celebrated his 86th birthday. Purim has also been active in 2022, releasing her first new studio album in fifteen years, which features her husband, legendary percussionist, Airto.
There is no way to capture Pascoal’s true range in a few words, but suffice it to say that he is something like Sun Ra crossed with Frank Zappa crossed with every sort of Brazilian musical style crossed with Miles Davis, with whom he recorded on “Live-Evil.” Pascoal’s live concerts are legendary. The 2004 performance I saw in Chicago remains one of the most magical events I’ve ever witnessed. Pascoal emanated bliss, love and joy. For those not lucky enough to capture the magic live, some recent reissues, and You Tube uploads, will send you into outer space.
In February, Far Out Recordings released a previously unissued Pascoal live performance from 1981, “Planetário da Gávea.” Appropriately recorded in a planetarium, the album contains everything Pascoal is known for - riotous improvisations, deep Brazilian rhythms and memorable melodies. The album’s second track, “Samba Do Belaqua,” gives you a taste of Pascoal’s sorcery.
In 1965, Pascoal and Airto teamed up with Humberto Clayber to record the Sambrasa Trio’s sole album, “Em Som Maior,” reissued in March by VampiSoul. The album has many brilliant moments, but the stand out track is “João Sem Braço.” After a brief mid-tempo introduction by the full trio, Airto breaks in with a thunderous drum clap, then the full trio breaks into full gallop. It is a tour de force of percussion ability and simpatico jazz trio improvisational communication.
Besides these official releases, the You Tube channel bigfootpegrande, has been uploading some amazing live Hermeto performances; here are just a few.
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo / Pori Jazz Festival, Finland, July 15, 1984
The creative and technical dexterity displayed by Pascoal and group at the Pori Jazz Festival is unbelievable. Powerful and unforgettable.
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo / Zagreb, Croatia, October 1990
More killer video. Sadly, it runs less than 20 minutes. Includes Hermeto interview in Portuguese with Croatian subtitles.
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo / Chicago 1991
Per the video’s notes: “Epic, Wild!!” I concur.
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo / Vienna, May 27, 2022
A very recent two hour live performance from Austria.
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo (with Luciana Souza) / Central Park, NYC, June 21, 1997
Another rare US performance. “Opening for Hermeto was Medeski Martin and Wood. Dozens of ignorant tapers, with racks over racks and all kind of expensive mics displaying in the air, taped MMW and left when they finished. I don´t remember anyone staying [for Hermeto]."
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo (w/ Naná Vasconcelos, Egberto Gismonti, Hugo Fattoruso) / Buenos Aires, 1981
Pascoal with other Brazilian heavyweights.
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo / Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, France, June, 19, 1986
Pascoal and group jamming heavy in France.
Both Purim and Airto have had a long musical relationship with Pascoal. Hermeto played on both Purim and Airto’s solo albums, and the couple frequently perform Pascoal’s compositions. Purim continues this musical tradition on her new solo album, “If You Will,” released in April by Strut. A family affair, the album includes her daughter Diana Purim and husband Airto.
The album’s peaks include a new rendition of "500 Miles High,” Chick Corea’s classic jazz fusion composition, originally recorded in 1972 by Corea’s band Return to Forever, with Purim on vocals. The song’s lyrics express how listeners will feel; like everyone who hears her, they will be enraptured by her voice.
You'll see just one look and you'll know
She's so tender and warm
You'll recognize this is love
You'll find yourself on another plane
500 miles high
The bigfootpegrande You Tube channel has also uploaded several phenomenal live Airto and Purim live performances. Prime examples of her outside singing can be heard in the live performances linked below. While Purim’s remarkable vocal abilities are grounded in every phase of Jazz, she pushes the boundaries of traditional jazz into the stratosphere. Her repertoire includes an astounding array of extended vocal techniques, somewhat akin to Jazz scat singing, but far beyond what even the most adventurous Bebop artist would attempt.
Airto & Flora (feat. Hugo Fattoruso) / Boston, April 24, 1973
Incredible live performance. Includes versions of two Pascoal compositions (“Uri (The Wind)” and “O Gaio da Roseira”). The track “Xibaba” has a fire storm guitar solo from David Amaro that touches on Sonny Sharrock at its peak.
Flora Purim & Airto Moreira (feat. Nivaldo Ornelas) / Avery Fisher Hall, June 28, 1978
Another rare, early live performance from Airto and Purim. Includes a performance of “500 Miles High.”
Flora Purim & Airto Moreira (feat. George Duke) / Hollywood Bowl, June 16, 1979
Airto and Purium joined by legendary keyboard player George Duke. Another live version of “500 Miles High.”
Flora Purim Live at Terminal Island, March 3, 1975
As a bonus, here is one more phenomenal Flora Purim live performance. Purim was busted for coke in 1974 and spent sixteen months in a US prison. Towards the end of her incarceration, prison officials allowed Purim to bring in well known Jazz musicians to play for the inmates: Cannonball Adderley, George Duke, Airto Moreira, Miroslav Vitouš, Raul de Souza and Leon "Ndugu" Chancler.
The live prison performance was broadcast over the radio. Apparently she played one concert for the female inmates and one concert for the male inmates. Part of the performance has been uploaded to You Tube. Despite some audio flaws, it’s one of the best live from prison performances you will ever hear. Be sure to listen to the end for a short interview with Purim.
I hope the music of Pascoal, Airto and Purim brings you as much joy, healing and happiness this summer as it has brought me.

A deeper look at Merci Miles: (Warner Records, 2021)
Miles Davis: trumpet; Kenny Garrett: saxophone; Deron Johnson: keyboard; Richard Patterson: bass; Ricky Wellman: drums
By July, 1991 Miles Davis was music royalty. The previous decade saw him reach a level of popularity and stardom seldom seen in jazz. By the early 80’s the trumpeter had changed music multiple times, 4 to be exact, with his foray into hip hop, the first recording to be issued after his death Doo Bop (Warner Bros, 1992) , marking the fifth groundbreaking turn in his career. Prior to his passing from stroke complications in 1991, he maintained a vigorous touring schedule, and the performances of his sextet of the period, the finest late career band he ever led (and arguably one of the best bands of his entire career) were supercharged. The music captured on the newly released Merci Miles: Live at Vienne (Rhino, 2021) marks the first time anywhere save two YouTube videos the concert has been available in full, and is significant and historically important for two reasons: it is one of Miles’ final performances in France available legally, and it features two compositions by Prince, the cheeky entendre laden titles “Penetration” and “Jailbait” that the late icon wrote specifically for Davis.
The picture of the late singer/composer/multi instrumentalist’s involvement with Davis is much clearer through the release of Prince’s own Sign O’ The Times multi disc mega box set and the official release of “Can I Play With U?” a track originally written by The Purple One during the legendary Rubberband (Rhino, 2018) sessions. Prince’s track was going to be included on what eventually turned out to be Davis’ first album with his new label, Warner Bros. Tutu (1986) but was eventually shelved. The track was then slated to be issued in the original, much more substantial The Last Word: The Complete Warner Brothers Recordings box set from the early 2000’s (of which promo copies existed) but was fazed out due to rights issues.
The trumpeter always regarded France warmly, from the time he first set foot on French soil as a 22 year old in 1949. The country was also where in the late 1950’s he recorded the innovative soundtrack to Elevator To The Gallows or Ascenseur pour l’echafaud director Louis Malle’s smoky noir film of which the trumpeter’s soundtrack, completely improvised featuring a top French rhythm section crystallized some of the ideas the trumpeter later would apply on Kind of Blue (Columbia, 1959). France was also the setting for the infamous romance with the late French starlet Juliette Greco. More importantly, France, being the first country to wholeheartedly embrace jazz and recognize creative improvised Black music to be on par with European art music, was ready for whatever Davis brought to the table, instead of the misdirected pining that many fans and critics demonstrated in the U.S. for his past, acoustic centered work.
Merci Miles was captured on July 1, 1991 at the Jazz a Vienne festival, at a picturesque Roman amphitheater filled to capacity. 7 days later on July 8, Miles would revisit the material from Porgy and Bess, Miles Ahead and Sketches of Spain at the Montreux Jazz Festival with a double orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones and featuring the late trumpeter Wallace Roney as a second voice alongside occasional spots for alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett. The appearance featuring this music was followed by an appearance with former band mates in Paris on July 10 (a concert that unfortunately of this writing is being thieved by bootleggers for album release), and the European swing wrapped up in Nice, France on July 16th.
Miles’ band that July 1st evening, featuring Deron Johnson (who grew up with Miles’ nephew and former drummer Vince Wilburn, Jr) on keyboards; Kenny Garrett on alto saxophone and flute) lead bassist and Parliament alumnus Foley, bassist Richard Patterson, and the late Ricky Wellman on drums were inspired and smoking.
“Hannibal” written by Marcus Miller, which appeared on the group’s latest studio album Amandla (1989) is the high energy set opener, with the rhythm section of Johnson, Patterson and Wellman in perfect sync. Miles flies free with some solo lines before the head appears, and Kenny Garrett makes his first appearance with a lengthy solo. Garrett (who has a new Mack Avenue studio album in August) is like a heat seeking missile, the rhythm section responding and creating inner dialogues with him in response to his impassioned, pulpit stirring cries. Deron Johnson, often alongside with Garrett in taking some of the best solos of the evening, briefly dialogues with Miles before spinning off into his own, substantial solo turn. Johnson is a complete history of the keyboardist’s who played with the trumpeter and distills everything in his sparkling, distinctive soloing voice, swinging slightly behind the beat against the mightily funky bass and drums underneath.
“Human Nature”, the classic ballad from Michael Jackson’s Thriller (Epic, 1982) Davis first debuted on You’re Under Arrest (Columbia, 1985). The sensuous existential track became a blank canvas for the Davis band to paint on nightly. The trumpeter renders the melody with longing, then gradually shifts into a resourceful solo with a double time sprint. Within Davis’ solo and the use of Spanish tinged scales, and the colorful keyboard backing, the intense drama of the beautiful arrangements that Gil Evans crafted for Sketches of Spain (Columbia, 1959) which Marcus Miller expanded upon in a sense for the film soundtrack Siesta (Warner Bros, 1989) are clearly felt. Davis quotes “Nature Boy” and a few other asides before passing the baton to Garrett, who used the tune as a nightly feature for intense late period Coltrane trance like meditation. Garrett fits in a quote of the old spiritual “Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho” before rocketing into space; Wellman in particular follows him wherever he goes. Every now and then Miles jabs some mood setting chords with his Oberheim OBX synth as cues, while Garrett continues to combust. The saxophonist bursting at the seams as a fragment from the bridge to “Milestones” is used as an ostinato, Davis signals a quick blast with his trumpet and the tune ends. Garrett brought the audience and listeners at home on a thrill ride.
“Time After Time” , the Cyndi Lauper classic is ushered in as volcanic applause erupts from the audience, nearly drowning out the music. For 9 and a half minutes, the show belongs to Davis, as he gently finds all the melodic contours he can in the tune. Like “Round Midnight” and “My Funny Valentine” of decades past, “Time After Time” became one of Davis’ signature ballads. He drives his improvisation the same way as Aretha Franklin, Pavarotti, Bocelli or Carreras would, with a marked sense of passion and timeless beauty.
Disc 1 closes with one of the Prince tunes, “Penetration” where everyone gets off on the raunchy funk. Davis and Garrett are one during the track, and it truly shows the admiration and border less musicality that both icons would have shared, Davis struts with swagger between melody statements and Johnson rips into his solo with passion, Garrett’s searing alto ups the ante further. As a contrast, “Jailbait” on disc 2, is a gut bucket blues where both Johnson and Garrett take scintillating solos..
The show closes with “Wrinkle” a wondrous maze of a melody that is awe inspiring when played a top speed, and “Finale” a drum solo feature for Wellman that showcases his patented bass drum triplets while keeping rock solid time on the snare, a sort of shuffle where the bass and snare switch roles, and some lightning samba as well as his signature Go-Go groove.
Sound:
Merci Miles is taken directly from the original tapes recorded and mixed by Patrick Savey and Mastered by John Webber at Air Studios in London. Similar to Sony/Legacy’s Bootleg Series releases for Davis, the tape is from the official broadcast, in this case captured by the small Zycopolis studios. Curiously for 1991, the sound is mono which could be due to whatever technical limitations of the tape, but it is very good strong mono. The Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC manages to wring out very nice separation for the band in the mono soundstage: In particular, Davis trumpet is vibrant, brassy, golden and present. Richard Patterson’s bass is commanding and takes the center of the sound stage, deep and rich. Ricky Wellman’s drums are full of gusto, there is a reason his nickname was “Sugarfoot” and you hear that in all it’s glory. Kenny Garrett’s passion radiates past the speakers, Deron Johnson’s keyboards float above the proceedings and Foley’s lead bass provides a wonderful textural contrast to everything else.
Concluding Thoughts:
The 80’s and early 90’s Miles cannon has seen relatively scant archival releases versus everything from the 50’s-70’s. Merci Miles is a welcome document of a band that truly was at the top of it’s game and at the peak of its powers. Miles Davis, judging from this concert was showing little sign of slowing down in his playing, there is a vitality and joy here that easily places this alongside his Montreux concerts of the period and the excellent Live Around The World (Warner Brothers, 1996). A wonderful present honoring the great musical icon thirty years on from his passing. The CD (reviewed here) and LP packages contain some particularly touching photos in a triple gatefold in the French Flag colors of Miles memorabilia from that final tour provided by Vince Wilburn, Jr and a superb liner essay from noted scholar Ashley Kahn contextualizing the history of the trumpeter’s French sojourns and the event itself, alongside some great photos. The cover also features some nice embossing of the album title text and Davis’ name. If there is any doubt about physical media, this album is a compelling case for why it’s so good to OWN a physical copy of an album.

Sara Montiel ( Cementerio de La Almudena )
Birth Name : María Antonia Abad Fernández Nickname : Saritisima
Born : March 10, 1928 in Campo de Criptana, Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain
Died : April 8, 2013 in Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid, Spain
Sara Montiel was born in the village of Campo de Criptana, province of Ciudad Real, in the region of Castille-La Mancha, Spain. Her parents were Isidoro Abad, a peasant, and Maria Vicenta Fernández, a door-to-door beautician. The future star was christened Maria Antonia Alejandra Abad Fernández. Barely in her teens, she won a beauty and talent contest held by Cifesa, the most influential Spanish film studio of that era. She was promptly signed to a movie contract and in 1944 made her debut playing a teenager in Te quiero para mí (1944), credited in the cast as "Maria Alejandra". By the end of 1944 she was given the starring role in Empezó en boda (1944), which introduced her with a more adult image and a new name: Sara Montiel. In the next four years she appeared in 14 films, including her first international success Delírio de Amor (1948), which led to a long term-contract in Mexico. She quickly established herself as one of the most popular film actors of the decade. starring in over a dozen films between 1950 and 1954. Hollywood came calling and she was formally introduced to American moviegoers in Vera Cruz (1954), playing Gary Cooper's love interest. Later she worked at Warner Bros. in Serenata (1956) with Mario Lanza, directed by Anthony Mann, who became her first husband. After starring in Samuel Fuller's Renegando o Meu Sangue (1957) with Rod Steiger, Sarita shot A Última Canção (1957) ("The Last Song") in Spain, a musical production that turned out to be the biggest box-office success in Spain's film history. It played for over a year in the same theaters in which it opened. A similar reaction followed in Western Europe and Latin America. Sarita Montiel had become the most popular actress-singer of 1957 and a national treasure for Spain. The unprecedented success of "El Último Cuplé" threw a wrench into her Hollywood career, as she was offered a multimillion-dollar contract to star in four films in Europe. Her next vehicle, La Violetera (1958) ("The Violet Peddler"), confirmed Sara's popularity and broke the box-office records set by the previous movie. The theme song from "La Violetera" became Montiel's signature song. The soundtrack albums from both films reportedly outsold Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra in the world market. From then on, Sarita would combine the making of films with the recording of highly successful albums and live concerts in four continents. By 1962 she had become a legend to millions of fans worldwide, reaching markets that had previously been uncharted territory for Spanish cinema. Among her many blockbusters of the 1960s were Meu Último Tango (1960), Subleme Melodia (1961), A Bela Lola (1962), A Rainha do Chantecler (1962) and Essa Mulher (1969). However, by the 1970s her interest in films diminished, due largely to the almost pornographic turn of Spanish films in the post-Francisco Franco era when censorship was abolished. Her activities turned mainly to recording and stage work, and she achieved uncontested successes with her stage shows "Sara en Persona" (1970-73), "Saritísima" (1974-75), "Increible Sara" (1977-78), "Super Sara Show"(1979-80), "Doña Sara de La Mancha" (1981-82), "Taxi Vamos Al Victoria" (1983-84), "Nostalgia" (1985-86), "Sara, Siempre Sara" (1987-88) and others. In the 1990s Sara surprised everyone by branching out into television: Sara y punto(1990), a mini-series of seven one-hour episodes, included a serialized biography of the star, many popular guests (including Luciano Pavarotti and Charles Aznavour, among others) and Miss Montiel singing her greatest hits in addition to new songs written especially for her. Next came Ven al Paralelo (1992), taped in a Barcelona theater where Montiel hosted, sang and acted in comedy sketches in front of a live audience. It is quite impossible to cover here all the awards Sara Montiel has won in her long successful career but we must mention the "Premio del Sindicato" (at that time Spain's equivalent of the Oscar) for best actress, won two years in a row for her performances in "El Último Cuplé" and "La Violetera". In 1972 she was proclaimed an honorary citizen of Los Angeles by Mayor Sam Yorty and was given the gold key to the city. Similarly she has been awarded the gold keys of New York, Miami and Chicago. In 1981 she received Israel's most prestigious honor, the Ben Guiron Award and in 1983 she was awarded France's Legion of Honor medal, after a retrospective of her career ran at the Autumn Film Festival in Paris. In 1986 "Nosotros", a Hollywood-based Hispanic actors advocacy organization founded by Ricardo Montalban, gave her its Golden Eagle Award for life achievement. The trophy was presented to Sarita by her "Vera Cruz" costar-producer Burt Lancaster in an emotional reunion that triggered a standing ovation from all their Hollywood peers witnessing the event. In 1997 she was awarded the "Gold Medal", also a life achievement recognition, given--rarely0--by Spain's Academy of Arts and Sciences. The two-hour ceremony was beamed live by national television. In 2008 Sara returned to her hometown to unveil a sculpture with her image at the new Sara Montiel Park. A nearby avenue was also named after her and there was at the same time a dedication ceremony of her newly renovated museum, located inside a 16th-century windmill. In addition, the government placed a commemorative plaque on the house where she was born. Sara Montiel's private life has also been a large part of her legend. After divorcing Anthony Mann in 1963, she married three more times (Vicente Ramirez Olalla 1964-1978; Jose Tous 1979-1992; Antonio Hernandez 2002-2004). Before, during and after these marriages she had countless affairs, among them Nobel prize-winning scientist Severo Ochoa and Italian actor Giancarlo Del Duca. Unable to have children, she adopted two during her marriage to Jose Tous: Thais (born in 1979) and Zeus (born 1983). In 2000 she published her autobiography, which became a best seller. Undaunted by the passage of time and ignoring critics who accused her of mishandling her legendary image, Sara Montiel continued living and working at a hectic pace. She kept touring with her one woman show and making guests appearances on television. In 2009 she won a new generation of fans when she recorded "Absolutamente," an outrageous duet with Fangoria's vocalist Alaska. Both the record and the promotional video reached the top of the popularity charts and remained there for weeks. Next Sara recorded some love duets with baritone José Antonio Román Marcos and traveled to the United States for a short tour sponsored by New York's Cervantes Institute and the universities of Chicago and Cincinnati. In every city she charmed the audiences with her charismatic presence and sense of humor. Back in Spain she continued her activities which now included supporting the singing career of her son Zeus. She appeared in his 2011 "Sex Dance" video and caused quite a stir. In February 2013 Sara Montiel became the subject of a made-for-TV documentary titled "Sara's Dream" which aired in Spain to high ratings and great reviews. It was a fitting celebration of her fantastic life and career which came at the right time. A couple of months later, the star who had seemed eternal, passed away suddenly and quietly in her Madrid penthouse. By her family's request, funeral services were private but the funeral procession, organized by the city of Madrid, was a very moving event attended by thousands who showed up at Plaza Callao to bid farewell to their beloved Sara. She was buried in the San Justo cemetery family plot.

It's Noise Festival time again!! While collaborating with various improvising musical groups or noise-makers (Spemakh, Hawlimann & Stricktschek, ...) and exhibiting in a variety of contexts, Peter observes the potency of sound/soundmaking and the habits of listening in diverse routine- or extraordinary settings. Cassette and vinyl-releases were published by labels like meudiademorte (D), SPAM (D), Rayon (UK), Stenze Quo (NL). 2018 Ana Ott (D) published parts of Peter's Schnarcharchiv on his LP Mellow Toes. Solo, he plays a set of percussions, synth, flutes and field recordings, mixed together to obtain a trance, a research of one and only sound, an electronic and chaotic gamelan, acoustic drones, or just a total mess. His new album has just been released by Un Je Ne Sais Quoi. https://unjenesaisquoi.bandcamp.com/album/probables SPELTERINI Arthur de La Grandière (bass, synth), Nico Joubo (guitar), Pierre-Antoine Parois (drums), Meriadeg Orgebin (synth, guitar). When two ex-Chausse-Trappe and two members of Papier Tigre and La Colonie de Vacances got together mid-2017 to try out some of Orgebin’s ideas, it soon became the band Spelterini. Named after the tightrope artist Maria Spelterini, their music is always on the edge, tense yet flexible. They make their own fabric based on minimalism, drones, feedback and every accident, break or any other part is captured by the band and fuels the creative process, reenacting each performance and enhancing their direct approach. The band is already a remarkable touring act with acclaimed performances at the Levitation festival in Angers and everywhere in France. The band's first release 'pergélisol/ Chorémanie' will be released on September 20th, 2019 on Kythibong records in France (vinyl LP) and Mascarpone Discos in Spain (cassette tape). https://soundcloud.com/spelterini ZORA KREUZER Zora Kreuzer erforscht in ihrer Arbeit Architektur und den öffentlichen Raum.
