Forgive me Father, I have no awful headcanons for you, only a general question on comic making. How do you do it, writing-wise/how do you decide what points go where, how do you plot it out (or do you have any resources on the writing aspect that you find useful?) Not to get too bogged down in details, but I attended a writer’s workshop and the author in residence suggested I transfer my wordy sci-fi WIP into graphic novel script, as it might work better. (I do draw, but I don’t know if I have it in me to draw a whole comic—characters in motion? Doing things? With backgrounds? How dare, why can’t everyone just stand around looking pretty)

I was interested but it quickly turned into a lot of internal screaming as I tried to figure out how to compress the hell out of it, since novels are free to do a lot more internal monologuing and such compared to a comic format (to say nothing of trying to write a script without seeing how the panels lay out—just for my own sake, I might have to do both concurrently.)

As an aside, to get a feel for graphic novels I was rereading 99RM and was reminded of how great it was—tightly plotted, intriguing, and anything to do with Ashmedai was just beautifully drawn. I need more Monsignor Tiefer and something something there are parallels between Jehan and Daniel in my head and I don’t know if they make sense but it works for me. (As an aside, I liked the emphasis on atonement being more than just the word sorry, but acknowledgment you did wrong and an attempt to remedy it—I don’t know why that spoke to me the way that it did.)

I thought Tumblr had a word count limit for asks but so far it has offered zero resistance, oh well. I don’t have much else to say but on the topic of 99RM, Adam getting under Monsignor’s skin is amazing, 10/10 (about the Pride picture earlier)

Totally! So first, giant thank you for the compliments! Second, I have a few questions in turn for you before I dive into a sort of answer, since I can give some advice to your questions in general but it also sounds like you have a specific conundrum on your hands.

My questions to your specific situation are:

did the author give any reason for recommending a, in your words, "wordy" story be turned into a graphic novel?

is the story you're writing more, like you said, "internal monologuing"? action packed? where do the visuals come from?

do you WANT it to be a comic? furthermore, do you want it to be a comic you then must turn around and draw? or would you be interested in writing for comics as a comic writer to have your words turned into art?

With those questions in mind, let me jump into the questions you posed me!

Let me start with a confession...

I've said this before but let me say it again: Ninety-Nine Righteous Men was not originally a comic — it was a feature-length screenplay! And furthermore, it was written for a class so it got workshopped again and again to tighten the plot by a classroom of other nerds — so as kind as your compliments are, I'm giving credit where credit is due as that was not just a solo ship sailing on the sea. On top of that, it got adapted (by me) into a comic for my thesis, so my advisor also helped me make it translate or "read" well given I was director, actor, set designer, writer, editor, SFX guy, etc. all in one. And it was a huge help to have someone say "there is no way you can go blow by blow from script to comic: you need to make edits!" For instance, two scenes got compressed to simple dialogue overlaid on the splashpage of Ashmedai raping Caleb (with an insert panel of Adam and Daniel talking the next day.) What had been probably at least 5 pages became 1.

Additionally, I don't consider myself a strong plotter. That said, I found learning to write for film made the plotting process finally make some damn sense since the old plot diagram we all got taught in grammar school English never made sense as a reader and definitely made 0 sense as a writer — for me, for some reason, the breakdown of 25-50-25 (approx. 25 pages for act 1, 50 for act 2 split into 2 parts of 25 each, 25 pages for act 3) and the breaking down of the beats (the act turning points, the mid points, the low point) helped give me a structure that just "draw a mountain, rising action, climax is there, figure it out" never did. Maybe the plot diagram is visually too linear when stories have ebb and flow? I don't know. But it never clicked until screenwriting. So that's where I am coming from. YMMV.

I should also state that there's Official Ways To Write Comic Scripts to Be Drawn By An Artist (Especially If You Work For A Real Publisher As a Writer) and there's What Works For You/Your Team. I don't give a rat's ass about the former (and as an artist, I kind of hate panel by panel breakdowns like you see there) so I'm pretty much entirely writing on the latter here. I don't give a good god damn about official ways of doing anything: what works for you to get it done is what matters.

What Goes Where?

Like I said, 99RM was a screenplay so it follows, beat-wise, the 3-act screenplay structure (hell, it's probably more accurate to say it follows the act 1/act 2A/act 2B/act 3 structure.) So there was the story idea or concept that then got applied to those story beats associated with the structure, and from there came the Scene-by-scene Breakdown (or Expanded Scene Breakdown) which basically is an outline of beats broken down into individual scenes in short prose form so you get an overview of what happens, can see pacing, etc. In the resources at the end I put some links that give information on the whole story beat thing.

(As an aside: for all my short comics, I don't bother with all that, frankly. I usually have an image or a concept or a bit of writing — usually dialogue or monologue, sometimes a concrete scene — that I pick at and pick at in a little sketchbook, going back and forth between writing and thumbnail sketches of the page. Or I just go by the seat of my pants and bullshit my way through. Either or. Those in many ways are a bit more like poems, in my mind: they are images, they are snapshots, they are feelings that I'm capturing in a few panels. Think doing mental math rather than writing out geometric proofs, yanno?)

Personally, I tend to lean on dialogue as it comes easier for me (it's probably why I'm so drawn to screenwriting!) so for me, if I were to do another longform GN, I'd probably take my general "uhhhhhh I have an idea and some beats maybe so I guess this should happen this way?" outline and start breaking it down scene by scene (I tend to write down scenes or scene sketches in that "uhhhh?" outline anyway LOL) and then figure out basic dialogue and action beats — in short, I'd kind of do the work of writing a screenplay without necessarily going full screenplay format (though I did find the format gave me an idea of timing/pacing, as 1 page of formatted script is about equal to 1 minute of screentime, and gave me room to sketch thumbnails or make edits on the large margins!) If you're not a monologue/soliloque/dialogue/speech person and more an image and description person, you may lean more into visuals and scenes that cut to each other.

Either way this of course introduces the elephant in the panel: art! How do you choose what to draw?

The answer is, well, it depends! The freedom of comics is if you can imagine it, you can make it happen. You have the freedoms (and audio limitations) of a truly silent film with none of the physical limitations. Your words can move in real time with the images or they can be a narrative related to the scene or they could be nonsequitors entirely! The better question is how do you think? Do you need all the words and action written first before you break down the visuals? Do you need a panel by panel breakdown to be happy, or can you freewheel and translate from word and general outlines to thumbnails? What suits you? I really cannot answer this because I think when it comes to what goes where with regard to art, it's a bit of "how do you process visuals" and also a bit of "who's drawing this?" — effectively, who is the interpreter for the exact thing you are writing? Is it you or someone else? If it's you, would you benefit from a barebones script alongside thumbnailed paneling? Would you be served by a barebones script, then thumbnails, then a new script that includes panel and page breakdowns? What frees you up to do what you need to do to tell your story?

If I'm being honest, I don't necessarily worry about panels or what something will look like necessarily until I'm done writing. I may have an image that I clearly state needs to happen. I may even have a sequence of panels that I want to see and I do indeed sketch that out and make note of it in my script. But exactly how things will be laid out, paneled, situated? That could change up until I've sketched my final pencils in CSP (but I am writer and artist so admittedly I get that luxury.)

How do I compress from novel to comic?

Honest answer? You don't. Not really. You adapt from one to another. It's more a translation. Something that would take forever to write may take 1 page in a comic or may take a whole issue.

I'm going to pick on Victor Hugo. Victor Hugo spent a whole-ass book in Notre-Dame de Paris talking about a bird's eye view of Paris and other medieval architecture boring stuff, with I guess some foreshadowing with Montfaucon. Who cares. Not me. I like story. Anyway. When we translate that book to a movie any of the billion times someone's done that, we don't spend a billion years talking at length about medieval Paris. There's no great monologuing about the gibbet or whatever: you get to have some establishing shots, maybe a musical number, and then you move tf on. Because it's a movie, right? Your visuals are right there. We can see medieval Paris. We can see the cathedral. We can see the gibbet. We don't need a whole book: it's visually right there. Same with a comic: you may need many paragraphs to describe, say, a space station off of Sirius and one panel to show it.

On the flip side, you may take one line, maybe two, to say a character keyed in the special code to activate the holodeck; depending on the visual pacing, that could be a whole page of panels (are we trying to stretch time? slow it down? what are we emphasizing?) A character gives a sigh of relief — one line of text, yeah? That could be a frozen panel while a conversation continues on or that could be two (or more!) panels, similar to the direction [a beat] in screenwriting.

Sorry there's not a super easy answer there to the question of compression: it's a lot more of a tug, a push-pull, that depends on what you're conveying.

So Do I Have It In Me to Write & Draw a GN?

The only way you'll know is by doing. Scary, right? The thing is, you don't necessarily need to be an animation king or God's gift to background artists to draw a comic.

Hell, I hate backgrounds. I still remember sitting across from my friend who said "Claude you really need to draw an establishing exterior of the church at some point" and me being like "why do you hate me specifically" because drawing architecture? Again? I already drew the interior of the church altar ONCE, that should be enough, right? But I did draw an exterior of the church. Sorta. More like the top steeple. Enough to suggest what I needed to suggest to give the audience a better sense of place without me absolutely losing my gourd trying to render something out of my wheelhouse at the time.

And that's kinda the ticket, I think. Not everyone's a master draftsman. Not everyone has all the skills in every area. And regardless, from page one to page one hundred, your skills will improve. That's all part of it — and in the meantime, you should lean into your strengths and cheat where you can.

Do you need to lovingly render a background every single panel? Christ no! Does every little detail need to be drawn out? Sure if you want your hand to fall off. Cheat! Use Sketchup to build models! Use Blender to sculpt forms to paint over! Use CSP Assets for prebuilt models and brushes if you use CSP! Take photographs and manip them! Cheat! Do what you need to do to convey what you need to convey!

For instance, a tip/axiom/"rule" I've seen is one establishing shot per scene minimum and a corollary to that has been include a background once per page minimum as grounding (no we cannot all have eternal floating heads and characters in the void. Unless your comic is set in the void. In which case, you do you.) People ain't out here drawing hyper detailed backgrounds per each tiny panel. The people who DO do that are insane. Or stupid. Or both. Or have no deadline? Either way, someone's gonna have a repetitive stress injury... Save yourself the pain and the headache. Take shortcuts. Save your punches for the big K.O. moments.

Start small. Make an 8-page zine. Tell a beginning, a middle, an end in comic form. Bring a scene to life in a few pages. See what you're comfortable drawing and where you struggle. See where you can lean heavily into your comfort zones. Learn how to lean out of your comfort zone. Learn when it's worth it to do the latter.

Or start large. Technically my first finished comic (that wasn't "a dumb pencil thing I drew in elementary school" or "that 13 volume manga I outlined and only penciled, what, 7 pages of in sixth grade" or "random one page things I draw about my characters on throw up on the interwebz") was 99RM so what do I know. I'm just some guy on the internet.

(That's not self-deprecating, I literally am some guy on the internet talking about my path. A lot of this is gonna come down to you and what vibes with you.)

Resources on writing

Some of these are things that help me and some are things that I crowd-sourced from others. Some of these are going to be screenwriting based, some will be comic based.

Making Comics by Scott McCloud: I think everyone recommends this but I think it is a useful book if you're like "ahh!!! christ!! where do I start!!!???" It very much breaks down the elements of comics and the world they exist in and the principles involved, with the caveat that there are no rules! In fact, I need to re-read it.

Comic Book Design: I picked this up at B&N on a whim and in terms of just getting a bird's eye view of varied ways to tackle layout and paneling? It's such a great resource and reference! I personally recommend it as a way to really get a feel for what can be done.

the screenwriter's bible: this is a book that was used in my class. we also used another book that's escaping me but to be honest, I never read anything in school and that's why I'm so stupid. anyway, I'd say check it out if you want, especially if you start googling screenwriting stuff and it's like 20 billion pieces of advice that make 0 sense -- get the core advice from one place and then go from there.

Drawing Words & Writing Pictures: many people I know recommended this. I think I have it? It may be in storage. So frankly, I'd already read a bunch of books on comics before grabbing this that it kind of felt like a rehash. Which isn't shade on the authors — I personally was just a sort of "girl, I don't need comics 101!!!"

Invisible Ink: A Practical Guide to Building Stories that Resonate: this has been recommended so many times to me. I cannot personally speak on it but I can say I do trust those who rec'd it to me so I am passing it along

the story circle: this is pretty much the hero's journey. a useful way to think of journeys! a homie pretty much swears by it

a primer on beats: quick google search got me this that outlines storybeats

save the cat!: what the above refers to, this gives a more genre-specific breakdown. also wants to sell you on the software but you don't need that.

I get this question pretty often and never really know what to say - there's so many avenues of advice to give, and difficult to tailor it in an AOE (area of effect? howdy ya do gamers im a bit of a gamer myself please believe me) format. Be aware that my "advice" may not be the thing you need to hear or apply right now, so maybe just store it away in the back of your brain for a while, or just discard it if you feel like you're past that point or moving in a complete different direction with your current art level.

But here we go, a little tidbit about environment design for story-telling (sorry long post):

A game I like to play with myself is "what if X... but Y". Like madlibs - what if [bookshelf] ... but it's [meat]. (I'm sitting beside my bookshelf and I just ate haha). Ok, now let's answer that - why would there be a bookshelf of meat? Maybe I'm a nerdy butcher, who collects exotic meat samples. Maybe the meats are monstrous and I'm a demon taxonomist. But meat decays so quickly! How would I keep them? Maybe I preserve them with a magic balm, or my bookshelf is so high tech it keeps the collection of meats cold through uhhhhhh cryo.... cryo uhhhh technology. Maybe I'm a meat wizard and these meat slabs carry runes that I can read and use to do ... Weird Meat Magic. Maybe I have a magical BBQ and I need to grill selected meats to release their Magic Juices. OH, FIRE! What if one day, my house gets set on fire (malevolent spirit? stupid accident?) and my bookshelf full of meats all gets cooked at once, releasing a Pandora's Box swarm of magical atrocities into the world? And now it's my mission to hunt them all down, butcher knife and tongs in hand. Actually wait this is a banger idea for both a Yan NPC AAAAAAAAAAAAAAND a DND character LMAO

But with this utterly random framework, we've already set down a couple world and story design beats to riff off of - there's Meat based Magic, there might be an Enemy somewhere who hates me and my meats, Meat = Jail for Evil Demons and I was a sort of prison warden? Now I have to work in a scene where I say "my MEAT IS HUGE" or "I've FINALLY BEATEN... MY MEATS". I want to design what my meat bookshelf looks like, and how it preserves the meats - different kinds of compartments for different kinds of meat! a special section for seafood? - my home and how the evil spirit got into it to commit arson, and what kind of person would live in a home like that. That's when worldly knowledge and research come in - I'd want to research real cryoprotective tech to help design the bookshelf, maybe base the meat demon designs off of... uh... I dunno? Metallica/KISS facepaint patterns? Rorschach test patterns?

Two skills help a lot in the process of grabbing idea threads and developing them: 1. Expanding your mental library of Concepts and Things and 2. Just being Curious about the world! Constantly asking questions and making little headcanons and never shutting up. Think of it as trying to entertain yourself!

Anyway this is just one quick way to get the brain rolling on world design! Sometimes you'll play "what if X... but Y" and come to a dead-end or realize you've just re-made homestuck (valid), so just try again with another set of concepts, or pick a train of thought you liked from your first game and expand on that. And of course you can always go back and change your ideas - like, maybe instead of a meat bookshelf I think a seed bookshelf would be cooler. I dunno. The point is to fully explore your ideas and through that, assign meaning to them so that they are compelling.

So tldr: read and learn things to expand your knowledge base, be curious, and try to connect cool visuals with a clear reason for their existence.

i tend to ramble a lot so this intro is gonna be probably a mixture of paragraphs and bullet points and everything in between but let’s start simple. also i rlly wanna emphasize a massive DRUGS TW bc his character largely revolves around his interest in and addiction to drugs

blackmails

grayson is claiming that he's been in a rehab program for the last year and is now completely sober and reformed when he really was just using the money to party and travel throughout europe.

without his parents paying to support him now, he's had to start dealing to make ends meet and keep up appearances. it’s mostly coke, but he dabbles in harder substances depending on what his connections can get him. 

grayson dabbles with calligraphy and was notorious for forging excuse notes and parent signatures all throughout high school and even now sells forgeries for a quick buck. the most notable of these was xavi’s letter of recommendation that helped him get into yale. 

background

grayson is violet’s older brother!!1 yes, that’s right, THE big brother who’s been out of the country getting LIT (and by lit i mean he’s been traveling europe on a series of solo trips w his parents’ money and doin lots of recreational drugs)

i haven’t fully fleshed out the dynamic he has w his parents but just know it’s ,, bad ASDHFJNK basically the jeons treated their children like accessories and expected them to be their little trophies and grayson just was not having that as a kid!!! so he acted out a lot and obviously got himself into a pretty bad scene (thank u goosie) and is basically the bane of his parents existence at this point <3 yet they still try to appease him to keep him under control but that’s for the family task to work out hehehehe

despite hating his parents, he adores both of his siblings. before the drug use started, he was always a big nurturer and would have done anything for either of them......now he wouldn’t be caught dead praising violet but he loves her in secret from afar HSJDFKG

yeah basically he met goose when he was around 15 i think????? and got introduced to drugs around 16 or 17 i wanna say and by the time he graduated high school he was just....a much different person than the soft big brother he used to be. his parents sent him off to europe pretty much as soon as he turned 18 under the guise of going to school internationally, but grayson obviously knew the truth and understood that he was being sent away so he wouldn’t be his parents problem anymore. 

he basically spent the last four years galavanting europe and just....trying to enjoy it???? but it’s hard to enjoy an extended vacation when u have no family or friends on ur side anymore </3 he basically used the money to stay in hostels and worked odd jobs here and there to stay afloat and keep supplied w the...special goods....but yeah lots of drugs, alcohol, sex, and recklessness but he DID learn a couple languages??? or at least enough to get through some pretty basic conversations in most european countries so <3 guess it’s all okay then!!!! 

anyways idk what else to put here that u won’t just find out in the family task so uhhhhhh idk lmk if u need anything else i guess

present/personality

so now grayson is just vibing at yale obviously ummm he actually got super into writing after high school, especially poetry. he used to carry journals full of just random prose about his addiction and his deepest thoughts, as well as probably some lighter stuff about his love escapades or maybe goose idk...basically he used poetry as an outlet and it allowed him to really ground himself and find his place in the world even if it didnt include who he thought it would SO with that being said, grayson got into yale due to a poetry competition he was a part of. he saw some big fancy competition being advertised and on a whim decided to submit some poem about his struggles with addiction and losing his family (a v raw piece that he didn’t expect to ever see the light of day) and he actually ended up winning! it caught yale’s attention and they invited him to apply and, knowing how much it would probably disturb his little sister, grayson very smugly applied and was pretty stoked to see he got in 

because that poem gained such publicity, it was assumed that he was a survivor of addiction and was writing from a sober perspective. he didn’t want to correct anyone, so he just went with it and has basically crafted this story about his massive success and has become an advocate for addiction treatment and rehabilitation. of course, none of the companies that sponsor him or the events that host him as a motivational speaker know that he’s snorting lines in the bathroom beforehand or dealing to half the elites, but that’s between grayson, god, and the blackmailer !

basically grayson showed back up because of violet’s blackmail being exposed. he was off in europe, unable to defend himself, and with a massive vendetta against his family so he decided what better way to reenter society than by publicly outing himself as a martyr <3333 his plan is basically to bash the family name to fulfill whatever angsty coming of age arc he has in store for him to make up for the pain of being sent away .... really angsty yeah </3 rip grayson 

anyways yeah he’s a total fake. he’s been using his status as a martyr to his advantage a lot, the best example being his recruitment into the elites. he guilted them into accepting him by discussing the PR benefits of recruiting a member that struggles with addiction and how supporting addiction treatment and second chances would be such a good look for them. like he basically threatened to publicly expose them for denying him due to his troubled past and accuse them of being exclusionary so they said boop ! ur in. now the elites are proud advocates for second chances <3333

i would describe grayson as fearless, overconfident, infamous due to his condition being exposed recently, a little gloomy, he’s kind of just got this chip on his shoulder and feels like he has something to prove....he’s gotta be better than his parents, gotta stick it to them and to violet and to everyone who doubts him. he’s a grumpy guy with a massive vendetta and a need for some kind of justice. he just doesn’t know what that is yet. despite all of the bad, however, he’s genuinely a pretty good guy. he’s really goofy and a genuine person, pretty friendly with literally everyone until they give him a reason not to be. basically, unless you are a member of the jeon family he probably likes you or is at least cordial to you (unless we plot differently ofc but u know). he’s just a big lovable dummy with some sweet drug connects and a knack for poetry. he also knows calligraphy but that’s beside the point . 

idk if this is enough to describe him but yeah if u have any questions just let me know hehe

this is probably gonna make things hard but considering violet was just exposed i think that he’s pretty new to yale ???? like probably just transferred in/started this spring semester rather than being here for the entire year/a prolonged amount of time so most of our plots will likely have to be newer/center on him first showing up OR we can establish their connections from pre-europe which is also fine w me....idk i didnt rlly think this timeline through so let’s just plot and see what happens aghbfjnd anyways i included some connection ideas to help us all just in case

wanted connections

i’d say he’s the honorary dealer of the elites aghbdfjn so literally anyone who needs a plug could be a potential connection. we can obviously tweak this and customize it to each character <3

maybe someone who met grayson in europe. they could have travelled together for an extended period of time or even just a brief encounter. he was over there for four years, so the possibilities are endless. 

building off the last one, this same connection could work with a romantic interest. maybe they were romantically involved for a time in europe and fell out of touch or maybe grayson/your muse just left in the middle of the night and they never saw each other again until now and maybe there’s some unresolved feelings/one-sided longing or need for closure. it could also be that they just hooked up whenever this person was in the area and that was that, no strings attached. 

maybe someone who genuinely believes that grayson is actually sober and really admires his strength and idk maybe they’re struggling w their own issues and seek advice from him or maybe they just make it harder for him to actually do his thing bc they’re constantly around and it’s not like they can catch him strung out and acting up 

someone in the literature department or with a background in english or writing. someone he could read poetry to, or share his favorite lines with. someone who’s taken the same professors and can tell him who to watch out for or what to expect. idk i just want him to have someone to share his passions with. maybe a little crush is forming? maybe they’re just friends who share a love of fiction? idk i’m open to literally anything 

he’s sort of a motivational speaker now bc he advocates for rehabilitation resources and stuff so like maybe ur muse saw him give a presentation or participate in some kind of seminar and they called bullshit on him after the show bc they were like,,, bro i literally saw u partying w max and avery last weekend what the fuck are u on about and now they could potentially hold that blackmail over his head hehe......

How would the turtles react to the poopy diaper prank???

A//N:My sister and i watched a few videos about this prank and we laughed a lot. But i laughed more when i imagined the boys getting pranked by his s/o with this.

Warning: Turtle dads!!!!💙🐢❤️🐢💜🐢🧡🐢��‍👦‍👦

You decided to give him a good lesson as he wasn't paying much attention to your baby boy/girl. He would just check if he/she doesn't need anything and would go back to his training/work out/computer/video games. You've warned him that he needed to pay a closer eye on your baby, and he would promise to do so. And always forget later. You had an idea to make sure that he wasn't going to forget about it ever again. You set up a clean diaper and pour a mix of peanutbutter and Nutella and left the diaper on the floor next to the baby, who quickly used his/hers tiny hands to eat the yummy and gross looking mix. You made sure to leave him/her on the kitchen floor so he/she would get caught easily, and you went back to pretend you were doing something else. May the prank begin!

Leo:

The fearless leader was training with his swords at the dojo. So, there was no way he would be the one who caught that scene. Acttualy, it was Raph. The big red masked turtle went to make himself a proteine shake, when she almost stumbled on his cute nephew/niece sitten on the floor. He noiticed that he/she was eating something, from a diaper. He instantly clicked what that might be and began to piss himself off. Snorting a lot more than Donnie does. He went to get his brother, not taking the wide smile on his face.

"Hey, number one dad! Your son/daughter has a little surprise for ya at the kitchen!" He announced as he continued to laugh. Leo frowned confusedly and went straight to the kitchen to see what was the trouble. Now, Leo have seen lots of crazy or scary stuff in his life. But, none of it could ever make him give such a girly scream like when he saw his son/daughter eating his own poop from a diaper.

"Holy Bushido!!! What are you doing, c/n?!" He quickly got him/her from the ground and examined his/her mouth. There was nothing but brown pasta. "Oh man! Your mom is gonna kill me!" He said as he tried to clean up the best he could, Raph laughing all along on the background. "Raph! Quit laughing and go get Donnie! Jeez, i'm a terrible father." He lamented as the guilt fell over him. Until he heard your laughs and turned to look at you very confused.

"How do you like the Peanautbutter, Fearless?!" You teased him as you kept laughing along with Raph. He had a serious frown now.

"Did you two set this up??" He asked agrily.

"Don't look at me! I'm the one who found him/her." He said in defensive mode.

"I set this up, Leo! So you can learn not to leave our baby unsupervised. This is one of the things that can happen if he's/she's left alone." You scolded him and he looked down in defeat.

"Alright, i got it. Sorry, akachan." He said kissing his baby on the cheek and even got some of the Peanautbutter on his face. You went to give him a kiss and your mouth was covered on it as well. This day was last long remembered and brought lots of laughs when brought back.

Raph:

The big cuddly teddy bear was in the middle of a work out section, when Leo, who was only going to take a bath, found his little nephew/niece sitten in there, with a "dirty" diaper on it's hands and his/her mouth covered in brown pasta. He got instantly disgusted, and next, furious. He had the feeling that Raph couldn't handle himself all of the responsabilities of having a baby in his life. He grabbed the baby in his arms and brought him/her to the gym, where he leaned the small being to his father who turned at them confused.

"What happened?! Why is his/her mouth covered with goo??"

"You should've known! You're his/her father, Raphael! I found him/her eating from the diaper." Said the older brother angrily. Raph's eyes widened when he told him what that goo might be. He quickly took the baby in his arms and looked around desperatly.

"Shit! Literaly shit!!! What am i gonna do now?? Uh, i know! I gotta clean him/her!" He rushed to the kitchen with the baby and placed him/her on the sink. He took a lot of tissues and used to wipe the infant's face. "Shell, i am totaly sleeping on the couch tonight."

"You would if it was for real." You said as you showed up at the kitchen with a vitorious look. He looked back at you and then to the baby, trying to figure what was happening. "That's not poop, Raph! Don't worry, he'll/she'll be okay."

"Damn! Ya gave me a scare here!" He exclaimed with a hand on his chest. Relieved that his son/daughter wasn't acttualy eating his/her own poop.

"Unless you want this to happen for real someday you better keep and eye on him/her."

"Alright, i needed a little helper at the gym anyway." He said and the two of you chuckle as the baby pointed to the Peanautbutter jar, wanting more of it.

Donnie:

Mikey was the one who found the baby at the kitchen when he was going to make himself a snack. When he saw that mucky substance spread all over the baby's mouth and tiny hands he entered in shock. He have heard that kids can make a mess, but this was riddiculous! And kinda funny too. He went to get his brother at his lab, who were working on another project.

"Uhhhhhh... Brah?! I think you should see this." He couldn't find the words to say that his son/daughter was covered in poop.

"Not now, Mikey! I'm very busy." Said Donnie in a serious tone.

"But, brah, this is serious. It's c/n..."

"WHAT HAPPENED?! IS HE/SHE HURT?! PAPA'S ON THE WAY!!!" He panicked when he learn that it had to do with his baby and rushed looking around for him/her. He finaly found his son/daughter with his/her mouth and face covered with his/her own droppings.

"Nononononono!!! Oh my god! Spit that out! Spit it!" He said desperatly, and kinda loud which caused the baby to cry. However, Donnie was more preocupied with all of the germs and bacteria that he/she might have consumed and was ready to take him/her to his lab and perform a stomach wash on his baby.

Until you showed up to safe the day.

"Hey! Donnie, it's okay! This isn't real!" You tried to calm him down from the inicial scare.

"I'm sorry, what?!" He said in disbelief.

"I set the whole thing up. This is just Nutella!" You said taking the jar you used for the prank. He took a deep sigh as he calmed the baby down.

"Oh thank goodness! It's okay, c/n, daddy is sorry for screaming at you." He cooed as he pets the baby's back gently. "I took the lesson from this one, those projects can wait. The two of you are the best projects of my life." He said as he brings you for a hug with him. Nuzzling on you and then on his son/daughter, covering his face with Nutella too. "And, time for bath!"

Mikey:

The big sunshine turtle was on a Mario Kart maraton, totaly foucused on his game. Donnie was looking for a certain joystick that he remembered to have borrowed to Mikey. So, he went to look for it at his room. That's where he found his baby boy/girl making a mess with what was in the diaper and even putting it on his/her mouth. Donnie used all of his self control not to throw out to what he saw and went to call his brother.

"Jesus Christ, Mikey! You can't leave a child all alone like that! Just take a look at what he/she have done, gross!" He scolded his younger brother who paused the game and went to get to his baby. Almost passing out when he saw his little boy/girl looking like some goo monster from his comic books.

"Yuck! Baby, that's not for eating! You let it out, you can't let it in anymore!" He said as he picks the baby up and started thinking on what to do now. "To the shower! To the shower!" He demanded as he quickly took all of the suplies, like towels, wipes and rubber ducks. He filled the litte thub with water and places the undressed infant onto it, starting to use a sponge to wash his/her face. "That's it, buttercup! Daddy is screwed! You problably don't know what that means, but daddy is in big trouble. I think we should move and change our names, what do you think??" He asked as the baby laughed at the bubbles he made. The orange masked turtle chuckled at the innocent life he have created with the girl he loves.

And, speaking of you, you were standing at the door watching as he was being such a great father. "Isn't it as fun as playing with video games?!" You commented and he looked at you with puppy dog eyes.

"I'm sorry, angelcakes! I wasn't paying attention on him/her. I'm a terrible father. Do you forgive me??" He cooed as you came closer to them."

"Of course i forgive you, Mikey! Acttualy, this whole thing was a prank anyway." You confessed before laughing at him. He looked at you in disbelief but then began to laugh as well.

"Yo, girl! You really got me this time. Hope you're prepared for our revenge." He said looking at his baby with a little wink as he/she played with a rubber duck.

I know of you mostly thanks to your wd!Steven comic, but I was wondering if you could help me with something involving writing? See, I haven't written anything on my own in a long while, since a close friend and I tend to write stories together, and I kind of can't we anything on my own anymore? It feels kind of like writers block but with 5 times the guilt. Would you know any way to counteract it, or maybe even things you do when you have writers block?

Hey, sorry for taking so long to answer!

I think much like art, there is no one best way to get rid of writer’s block. It just depends on what you need at the time. So I feel like you have to first analyze WHY you can’t seem to write anymore and kind of try to get yourself out of that funk with solutions that make sense.

For example -

Are you not writing because you have nothing to build off of?

If you’re writing collaboratively, you might have gotten used to the balance of your ideas having an echo from another person. That’s not a BAD thing, per se, but you have to now learn to run on your own instead of participating in a 3 legged race.  

Solution: Try doing prompts, or writing short stories with a specifically planned plot. You can even give yourself challenges like ‘rewrite the first chapter of Harry Potter in your own words’ or give yourself other very specific guidelines that will give you training wheels for writing on your own. Eventually you’ll learn to support your own writing.

Other tips: I don’t know about other authors, but I often end up skipping over parts when writing initial ideas down. I’ll write what I know, and when I get to the part where my brain goes “uhhhhhh” I just stop, leave that scene, press enter a few times and pick up where I DO know what happens. I can always go back and fill the spaces later or(!) I can snip the scenes and leave them as is, because sometimes, the parts you are inspired to write are the only important ones and don’t need other stuff!

Are you not writing because you lack motivation for world-building?

Sometimes when we write collaboratively, we end up borrowing a lot of background details from our writing partner who has more know-how about worldbuilding. If that partner is no longer there, you might feel lost and frustrated with how to fill up that space.

Solution: Read! Read read read. I know this is obvious, but I think people sometimes underestimate reading. And I don’t mean fanfiction (although obviously that’s also awesome, don’t STOP reading fanfiction) but I mean - read about new worlds! Read books that do their own worldbuilding - fantasy, sci-fi, etc. Get as many varied worlds into your head as you can and try to think about what makes them work. Try your hand at describing potential worlds you think up of. But in the beginning - just READ. You need a good base of knowledge to work with before you can hope to produce your own stuff.

Other tips: I said sci-fi and fantasy because that’s the obvious choice, but actually, reading about real-world stuff is also EXTREMELY important. Some of the best literature I read (and best fanfics) is the stuff where the author is knowledgeable in a field (history, wine, religion, etc) and is able to paint a full picture of the setting because they have a full artillery of details at their disposal. PLUS reading about new stuff in the real world (which, honestly, specific fields ARE mini-worlds with their own culture and history) will likely inspire you to write about something within that ecosystem.

Are you not writing because you don’t have good time-management skills?

When I was in high school, I wrote with friends - and one friend in particular (you know who you are, honey) absolutely used every method short of physical violence in order to get me to write on a daily basis. I hold no grudges because I developed a good habit of it (where has that gone now... oi.) but that’s actually the key, I believe - HABIT.

Solution: Building habits takes time and bribery. In fact, habit-building is 90% bribing yourself to do something. This is something I heard from gym-goers who would form gym-going habits by first frequenting a gym only to do fun things - sauna, shower, and just sit around and do minimal work.

Why? Because it builds the habit and association of positive things with that habit.

So what you need to do is this - block off writing time. Get yourself some tea. For 15 or 30 minutes every day, open a blank word doc and sit down with your tea and just... stare at that word doc and listen to soft jazz and drink your tea. Don’t pressure yourself about writing, don’t feel bad, just let that habit of drinking tea and staring at a blank page form a positive association.

Eventually, you’ll start writing. But you need to give yourself time to have that habit. And it has to happen naturally.

Other tips: Obviously, you need ideas as well. Write down any ideas you have! Write them on your phone, on post-its, in the margins of your reports. Whatever! Sometimes, ideas transform. Something that was once “THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER” turns into “holy shit this is shit” overnight, but then becomes “Hey, I can actually work with this.” by next weekend. This is change is natural and normal, but you need to keep the idea around for long enough for it to complete that metamorphosis.

the “will give you shit but also go to the ends of the earth” for you type i suppose…he shows his affection thru gentle bullying. he can also be kind of genuinely an overbearing asshole at times, but he gets better with it; it takes him a while to, uh, adjust to having “friends” in the first place. he’s a dad friend if your dad is kind of a grumpy punk with a rude and morbid sense of humor

kaidan wanted to propose with one of his dad’s old rings but he figured out it wouldn’t fit ari’s finger, so (with his mother’s blessing/assurance that his dad would have been more than happy abt it, etc) he had the gold melted down to make a new ring. in my mind it looks smth like this and yes ari totally cried a little

it also took kaidan weeks of near-misses to work up the nerve to propose even tho he Knew ari was gonna say yes, he was just really worried about getting it right. eventually he just did it on their balcony and ari got surprised and dropped his cigarette and kaidan got a cool new engagement burn scar on his arm but it was nice

19. Why did they fall for each other?

ari fell for kaidan bc he’s not just intelligent, but perceptive; he’s a realist who errs toward optimism and making the best of bad situations; he believes people can and should be better; he has a surprisingly understated sense of humor; he can keep up with ari’s teasing; ari asks him if he’s a romantic and he denies it and then gives, like, the most romantic answer in the world. he’s cute.

kaidan fell for ari bc……. he has big arm. ok but uh i think it’s because he’s, pretty practical and matter of fact and doesn’t care all that much about the social trappings that kaidan continually tortures himself with… he makes kaidan feel Seen and Understood but doesn’t make a big dramatic deal out of everything kaidan tells him, he just treats him… like a person. for someone who’s been living with & defining themselves by their issues for as long as kaidan has, it’s pretty incredible to find someone who just makes him feel like a human being again

20. What are their common interests or hobbies?

a lot of their relationship is like, meeting each other in the middle haha, but there are some things they both enjoy a lot with no caveats:

- cooking! kaidan’s a foodie and it becomes ari’s therapy hobby after me3, so it’s smth they enjoy doing together a lot. they try to do it more often if possible, but their general friday night tradition is to come home, crack open a couple beers, and cook a big meal together

- they are both outdoorsy Adventure Dads… it takes a while before ari can handle more than a walk around the park but eventually he and kaidan can go hiking again and they both rly love it. i imagine theyd be into stuff like camping, swimming, kayaking, etc too dfjnfg

25. Is there something they fight about?

well, everyone gets into arguments occasionally, but i don’t really think they fight all that often… not that they agree on everything all the time, but they’ve both gotten pretty good at talking things out and also deciding whether or not something is even worth arguing about in the first place. when you are dating someone during the apocalypse and don’t have to any time to waste those are both pretty valuable skills haha [i think the most they ever fought in their relationship was post-me3, when ari got out of the hospital and they’d both started to ‘settle in’ to their new lives but it was a bumpy adjustment and they were both going thru a lot of trauma and stress and bottling it up etc. it wasnt a great time but they worked thru it]

28. What would they like to change about the other?

it’s a double-edged sword, bc it’s part of what attracts kaidan to him as well, but sometimes kaidan really wishes ari had more a self-preservation instinct!! sometimes his tendency to charge headfirst into trouble is sexy, sometimes kaidan is tired and sad and it just gets really old

ari wishes kaidan would loosen up a little although, again, the straight-laced military thing (unfortunately) kinda does it for him. he would also take away kaidans chronic pain if he could

30. When did they realise they fell in love?

ari appreciates how thoughtful kaidan is but sometimes it’s like… a bit… much lmao, he’s not as navel gaze-y as kaidan is so sometimes the process of having to talk everything out gets tiring. for kaidan it’s kind of the opposite, he sometimes perceives ari’s lack of forethought as a lack of care, which isn’t really true, he just works differently

on a much pettier level, ari gets annoyed that kaidan wants to sleep in all the time and kaidan gets annoyed that ari drowns all his food in hot sauce. hello, i worked hard on that steak36. What are their best memories together?

advtykefd cheesy but i like to think they got to take a little bit of leave after me1 so… they rented a log cabin somewhere (not sure if they went back to earth or just a colony planet somewhere?), turned off non-emergency comms on their omnitools and just chilled for a bit… went hiking, had drinks at the tiny bar in the closest small town, holed up in the cabin all day and had sex lmao it was probably the most peaceful week of aris entire life and it left a big impression on him

ofc later there’s stuff like their wedding day, their son’s birth, adopting their daughter etc. kaidan would probably even say, with the emotional distance provided by time, that horizon counts cuz even tho it sucked at the time nothing could have been better than realizing ari was alive

MIRANDA LOL… they just. do not see to eye or get along at all. i find their relationship very entertaining for this reason bc the dynamic of commander & XO who are both trying to be professional but do not respect e/o even the tiniest bit is so funny. theres a convo w her in me2 (i think it might be the one where you can initiate her romance?) where if you choose the renegade dialogue is hilarious to me… miranda makes some snide, passive aggressive comment about shepard based on their background (it’s like “it’s amazing how you’ve managed to succeed despite being _____” lmao) and then shepard is like “OH i get it, you’re jealous bc i’ve been more successful than you and TIM likes me more even tho i’m a big piece of shit idiot?” i love it it’s so funny. they both suck. eventually they do build some kind of mutual respect btwn them but theyre still… not exactly friends. i think in me3 ari was like “damn i hope miranda’s ok” and then when he actually met her again remembered why he used to be so pissed at her all the time lmao. (after me3 tho she saves his life Again and they probably have a lot of time in the hospital to just talk so maybe they do become genuine friends)

just gonna try to combine these i guess,

- his parents, although he only got an unfortunate short time with them, he takes after both of them a lot, and the things his parents imparted on him stuck with him, but especially as he gets older he’s also really aware of the mistakes they made

-the reds, in general. not a really positive influence lmao but. they were his home for years & he learned how the world works through them, for better or worse… it’s why he’s a bit of a cynic, although later he is able to characterize it more as “this shit sucks But we can make it better” rather than just “this shit sucks”

- anderson was the first person ari ever felt saw him as a human being, and it was… a slow-going thing to learn to trust him ahah, but wanting to be worthy of anderson’s approval shaped a lot of his career decisions

Aye bro for dad advice hour how do remember to take care of yourself whilst busy with school and stuff. Ps, my method for getting shit done when I’m done procrastinating is doing it in a work block of 45 minutes and then taking a 15 minute break then repeating until stuff is done.

Okay so like, the 45 minute work 15 minute break? GOOD SHIT THATS A GOOD METHOD RIGHT THERE(note: im not scientist but from personal experience and Science™ it sounds like a great way to do work) but lemme lay down some other good Work Tips1- COLORS. Every single class you have, assign it a color. Red, blue, green, purple, hot pink, brown, whatever- it doesn’t matter what color it is just as long as you have a distinct color per class. This helps so much because it makes you feel way more organized. Bonus points for matching other supplies. Ex: “Hey I need to pack my red notebook for Physics class, my physics handouts are in my red folder, and I write my physics homework in red pen in my planner.” DOUBLE BONUS points if you assign your favorite color to your least favorite and/or hardest class, it’ll give you more motivation to work hard(DISCLAIMER I HAVE NO EVIDENCE TO PROVE THIS CLAIM THIS IS JUST FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE)2- PLAN THAT SHIT!!! Planner’s are your best friend. If you’re in college, get the syllabus and WRITE EVERY ASSIGNMENT DOWN. Get in the habit of writing everything down! I don’t care if your project is due in November, write it NOW, because when you have it written you can go “Oh X is due in 5 days but I have some free time today, lemme work on it!”3- STAY. AHEAD. No seriously do your work ASAP. You have no idea how much easier a course is when you’re ahead of the class vs behind. Not to mention you WILL fall behind for some reason, so it’s better to stay ahead and fall back to the rest of the class rather than be behind and fall even further and get yourself in a hole4- UNDERSTAND YOUR SCHEDULE. This is more for college students and those who don’t have the same classes every single day, but like- after the first week or two you should understand about what kind of work load your classes expect from you. Take advantage of that. Use your easy days to get work done, plan how you’re going to tackle harder days. If you know your Wednesdays are rough, try to do work on Monday so you’re not totally swarmed come Tuesday.5- MAKE A FRIEND IN EACH CLASS. I’m not saying become BFFLs with someone and forge a lasting friendship, but it seriously helps to have one person for each class that you can chat with, maybe even study with. Swap numbers, that way you can text each other if you’re having issues or miss a day. No shame in never talking to them after the class ends, some friendships just work like that and that’s totally okay!6- VIDJA GAME MUSIC- video game music helps you to focus- like it’s specifically designed to do that XD It’s great background noise and when there’s no lyrics, it often won’t distract you. Classical music helps too! But it’s very good when you just can’t focus7- SCHEDULE THAT SHIT. Set aside a specific time each day/week/whatever that you sit down and get work done. If this is part of your daily/weekly routine, it’s waaaaay easier to get focused for it. 8- Find what works for you. How I learn and get work done can be totally different than what John Doe does, but that doesn’t mean either of us are doing the wrong thing. Trial and error it!!!9- Uhhhhhh Do it for the vine

I’m pretty sure that I started shipping Marinette and Adrien the first scene they were actually together in. And just shipped them harder in each scene after, including all the ridiculous superhero/civilian mixup-mashups lol

2. Have you ever read a fanfic about 2?

Uhhhhhh......would these be my fav ships if I didn’t read fic of them? Either way, I’ve trawled through the Akira/Goro tag so many times that I’m actually caught up with all the completed works for them on a daily basis.

3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screensaver/profile picture/tumblr screensaver?

Not by themselves, but in a group photo, I guess? I had the whole K Project main cast as my computer background for a bit. I did look for a phone background of them a while ago, but I couldn’t find any I liked enough.

4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?

If Tony and Loki broke up then I’d be mildly worried about the fallout on their mental and physical healths, but overall I wouldn’t be super surprised on average.

5. Why is 1 so important?

Honestly I just relate to both Hibiki and Yamato so much, and also I’m a sucker for the dynamic that they set up. Also I wanna break Yamato in the most delicious ways thank you so much radiata for letting me indulge in that through your fics

6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?

I mean, it’s literally a funny/serious ship. Jack brings the fun, but Pitch brings stability and seriousness when it’s needed.

7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?

Well, speaking literal canon, Laurent/Damen is the only actual canon ship so I guess by default they win, But damn if Hibiki/Yamato, Harry/Draco, and Akira/Goro can’t give them a run for their money in innuendo and implied chemistry.

8. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond?

They’re all based on growing through hardship and learning to trust each other and deep loyalty due to those so uh all of them? Like half of them were willing to die for their partners and the other half worked (or is working or will work or whatever) extremely hard to make it work so...

9. How many times have you read/played/watched 10′s fandom?

Oh god that’s Devil Survivor 2. I think by this time I’ve logged like 60 bazillion hours into DeSu2. I’ve replayed the game so many times I can recognize when people use actual lines from the game, or slight modifications of lines. I can get the true ending effortlessly. I’ve played both the original and remake, watched the anime, and read fic for it (and nearly started writing my own before realizing I had no plot beyond yay ships). In short: too many goddamn times.

10. Which ship has lasted the longest?

I don’t know if this is asking which has canonically lasted longest or which has lasted longest for me, so I’m gonna answer both. Laurent/Damen is the only currently canon pair, so they win canon lasted longest. Either Harry/Draco or Daisuke/Satoshi were my first real ship, so they’re my personal longest lasting.

11. How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?

Well, Mari and Adrien haven’t gotten together yet, but I’d like to believe that they wouldn’t quit for anything. The only thing I can see them fracturing over is if they get together before the reveal so they’re hiding Lady and Chat from each other. As soon as that’s cleared up though, they’ll be strong again.

12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8?

Ooooooohhhhhhhh that’s certainly a choice. I honestly don’t know. Akira and Goro certainly are skilled and resourceful, but I don’t know how they stack up against Sato and Dai. Satoshi is literally a genius and has skills to back it up, but his stamina ain’t shit. And Daisuke has the skills and smarts to survive, but he puts himself in danger way to often to bet on. Meanwhile Akira and Goro are always fighting smart and using the most out of all their resources, as well as both being super smart and highly skilled. And this is ignoring all the canon extra shit they come with, cause that just muddies the playing field more. I honestly don’t know.

13. Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?

I feel like Tony and Loki would hide their relationship from the Avengers as long as possible just to avoid having to deal with the drama lol

14. Is 4 still together?

Again, the didn’t technically get together in canon, but damn if they ever let each other go again once they do get together (which is also p much inevitable imo

15. Is 10 canon?

It is if you assume Hibiki was just too focused on saving the world to notice and the others didn’t feel like blatantly informing him. I can’t see why Makoto or Otome would tell him, and Fumi just straight up wouldn’t care if he knew or not.

16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?

Okay so on an equalizing field of no supernatural or superhuman powers of any kind, probably not Mari and Adrien. Look I love battle couples and I have no idea who would win. I’m gonna say Laurent and Damen literally only because they’re actual adults and not baby adults or near adults and they didn’t have any powers to begin with so that’s all them babe, no boosts needed.

17. Has anyone ever tried to sabotage 5′s ship?

If Harry and Draco ever actually got their heads out of their asses and realized being obsessed with each other really was quite gay, everyone and their dogs would probs be trying to get in their way.

Aw shit that’s my babes Vlad and Ophelia (Ophelia tops) lmao. Ophelia is a witch who’s destined to do battle with a massive titan of fire which,,,I haven’t created yet. She’s fiercely protective and badass, but needs a teacher because she refused to go into the king’s army to learn proper combat magic. Vlad’s a 400 year old vampire who learned magic on a whim and agrees to teach her, but he uses dark magic willy nilly which makes her want to choke him always

Vlad thinks Ophelia is a goddess and Ophelia finds him charming but she’d rather die than admit it.

4. What’s the least favorite book you have ever read?

Fucking. Grapes of Wrath with it’s weird ass titty suckin scene.......if I see another copy of it ever I’ll burn it I swear to god.

The numbers on Simon’s wrist counted down as they had for as long as he could remember. He sat in English class, staring at the faintly glowing numbers to distract himself from whatever Mr. Wise was talking about at the front of the classroom. He wondered, not for the first time, who would be waiting for him when the numbers finally reached zero. It wasn’t like he had a type or anything, after all, as sure as he was that he was gay, he’d never had a crush on a boy before. At least, not until Blue.

A smile bloomed on his face as his thoughts returned to the boy he’d been emailing since the summer. It had all started with a post on Creeksecrets, ground zero for Creekwood High School gossip, as he liked to call it. Although, it couldn’t be that bad if it led him to Blue. He rested his chin on his hand, Mr. Wise’s voice only background noise. But that was the thing that confused Simon so much. Since he’d first started talking to Blue, they’d gotten to know each other so well, and Simon had fallen in love with him. Like, hard. Blue was perfect for him, and he would even go far to say that they could be soulmates. Yet the numbers on his wrist still ticked, which they wouldn’t if he’d truly met his soulmate.

Maybe I have to meet Blue in person for the timer to hit zero, he thought suddenly. He glanced around the room, wondering if any of the people there could possibly be Blue.

“Simon?” Mr. Wise’s voice filtered into his thoughts, snapping him back to reality. “Would you like to tell us what symbolism you found on page 37?”

“Uhhhhhh,” His face burned. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

A boy in the front row raised his hand, answering to Mr. Wise’s satisfaction in the softest, gentlest voice Simon had ever heard. Simon sighed with relief as the bell rang, spared from any more humiliation. The boy smiled at him as they walked out of the classroom, turning down the opposite hallway from the one Simon had to use for his next class.

If he wasn’t in love with Blue, he would definitely have fallen for him.

As time went on, Simon talked to Blue more and more and felt closer to him than ever. He’d suggested meeting in person and revealing their identities, but Blue wasn’t ready for that yet. And then there was the constant fear of Martin. Martin, who had found his emails and blackmailed him into making Abby fall in love with him, even though anyone could see that would never happen. Still, it was worth playing along to keep his relationship with Blue secret.

Outside of all of that, rehearsals for Oliver were going well, and despite his small part, he loved every single second of being in theater. The songs, the people he worked with in Creekwood’s theater company, the jokes they made, all of it made the torture of high school that much easier to deal with. Their opening night was coming up, so putting his full focus into rehearsals helped him keep his mind off of everything. Still, between scenes and costume changes, he kept glancing at his wrist, hoping that it would magically switch to zeros.

During one of their Saturday rehearsals, the cast took a break for pizza, and Simon found himself sitting next to Cal Price. They’d never talked much before, but he was really nice and, if Simon was being honest, really, really cute. He couldn’t help staring at Cal’s eyes. They were the most vibrant blue-green he’d ever seen. And then it hit him. Blue-green eyes. Blue’s email address.

Cal was Blue. He had to be. There was no other explanation.

So that must mean… Simon thought, pulling up his sleeve to look once again at the numbers on his wrist. Yet, somehow, every number was decidedly not a zero. He sighed. Either Cal wasn’t Blue, which didn’t make any sense, or the timer wasn’t counting down to the moment he met his soulmate. Simon really liked Cal and really wanted him to be Blue, so it had to be the timer. At least, he hoped.

It was Christmas when the delicate balance Simon was living in collapsed. Martin was fed up with Abby not liking him back, so he took it out on Simon, outing him on Creeksecrets. Blue was away in Savannah, but he still had internet, so it was only a matter of time before Blue found out who he was. Then, a flicker of hope stood out from the despair: maybe then the counter would hit zero. He glanced at it again. Thirty-one days. Thirty-one days until the timer finally hit zero and he’d find out what those stupid numbers meant, and hopefully he’d learn who Blue was, too.

A few days later, Blue emailed him, and Simon’s heart sunk like a stone before he even opened it. This was it. Blue was going to tell him that he couldn’t do this anymore and never email him again. He held his breath as he read, slowly letting it out as he realized that Blue wasn’t saying goodbye at all and everything was fine. He was so relieved that a smile grew on his face, falling once more when he read the last sentence: Jacques, I’m almost positive I know who you are.

It was now or never. This was his chance to see if Blue really was who Simon thought he was. He typed out a reply and set his phone aside, returning to his homework for as long as he could. A couple hours later, his phone lit up with a notification. Blue had sent a reply. Simon held his breath again as he unlocked his phone.

When he let it out this time, it was more of a sob than a breath. Cal wasn’t Blue. Blue wasn’t Cal. And he’d ruined everything between him and Blue. His hands shook as he replied, hoping against hope that they wouldn’t lose what they had between them.

Oh, and to make it all even better, Blue was right about who he was. He knew that Simon was Jaques. Which wasn’t a bad thing, it was just different now.

Simon still thought he might have a chance with Blue, that is, until the day Cal told him he was bi and casually mentioned that they should hang out sometime. His heart beat loudly as his love for Blue and his somewhat-of-a-crush on Cal fought in his mind, and he blushed without saying anything.

The truth was, Simon would pick Blue over Cal any day. He was just caught a little off guard.

When he saw Blue’s email later that day, though, he didn’t even know how to react. For some reason, Blue thought everything was working out for him, but nothing was, not even close. And underneath it all, those damn numbers still weren’t at zero. He sent Blue a whole bunch of emails, hoping against hope that he’d receive a response, but it was to no avail. Their relationship, one of love and trust and Oreos, was over.

Simon wondered if he’d rather it never have happened at all than for it to end like this.

He decided he wouldn’t.

If only there was some way to save it now.

Thirteen days until it’s all behind him, for better or for worse.

Finally, finally, finally, the big day arrived.

Simon glanced at the numbers on his wrist, the “days” spot already at zero. He didn’t know whether he was excited or terrified. But right then, he had more important things to think about because that night was opening night for Oliver.

As he drove to school, he noticed flyers hanging up around Shady Creek advertising a carnival that night. Simon’s mind immediately went to Blue and his aversion to tilt-a-whirls, and he got an idea.

As soon as he had a break, he logged on to his email account, Jaques’s email account, on his phone and poured his heart out to Blue, his soulmate, ending the message with an invitation to find him at the carnival after the opening performance was over. All that was left to do now was wait, hope for the best, and not totally screw up during the performance.

Only a few hours to go.

The performance was great, and Simon had a blast, but he couldn’t get out of his costume fast enough once it was over. He ran out to his car and drove to the carnival, wandering around and riding various rides, keeping an eye out for people who could potentially be Blue and trying not to worry about what would happen when the timer hit zero. It was definitely happening during the carnival; it didn’t close for another two hours and the timer had a little less than two hours to tick away.

Simon tried not to worry about it all too much, but once the timer had only ten minutes left, he couldn’t focus anymore. With three minutes to go, he decided to ride the only attraction he hadn’t gone near: the tilt-a-whirl.

All hopes of his timer having anything to do with Blue were pretty much gone. At that point, Simon figured the only possible explanation was that his soulmate was the guy operating the ride. Then again, he really hoped not.

Just as the ride’s operator was about to start the last ride of the night (Simon’s timer still hadn’t reached zero, so it wasn’t him, thank goodness), Simon heard someone say, “Can I sit here?”

Ding.

Simon glanced first at the numbers on his wrist, all zeroes, before looking at the source of the voice, his soulmate. He almost couldn’t believe his eyes.

It was the boy who saved him from humiliation that day in English class.

“It’s you,” Simon said, his breath catching. “You’re Blue.”

“I’m sorry I’m late,” the boy replied. “I’m Bram, and I think this makes us soulmates.” He rolled back the cuff of his jacket to reveal a matching set of zeroes. Simon showed Bram his in response and grinned.

Simon was so glad that he was right about Blue, and even more glad that he didn’t take Cal up on that hangout offer.

10. been depressed: There is a part of me that feels like this is a weird question to ask someone who has depression always kind of humming in the background, but I guess the last time I let it CONSUME me was, again, a few months back when I was a little TOO frustrated about being so boxed up. While I like the work I’m doing up here more than what I was doing down there, the fact remains that this was not what I was led to believe I would be coming into. I don’t want to spend the time ranting poetic about it; it would take too long. The short of it is I’m unhappy with what feels like being misled, and even more unhappy with knowing I can’t really leave it right away. It’s been a little too easy to get eaten up, because of it. I don’t talk about it when it happens, because people always want to come at it with solutions, and there isn’t one. That’s not how this situation works. And for that matter, that’s not how depression as a mental illness works; sometimes you’re sad because you’re sad and you just have to kind of. Work through it. Process it.
