Could milk’s favorite cookie be just as addictive as cocaine?

A study conducted on a group of lab rats by students and professors at Connecticut College shows that rats find Oreo cookies to be just as addictive as cocaine.

Who would have thunk it?!

Here’s more about the experiment and how it was conducted:

To examine how "addictive" high-fat, high-sugar foods could be, the rats were put into a habitat with two rooms. In one they were given an Oreo and in the other a rice cracker.  Then the students/professors measured the time they spent in each room to see their preference for the Oreo versus rice cake.

The experiment was then repeated with other groups of rats being offered injections of cocaine or morphine in one room and saline in the other. The researchers found that the rats had an "equivalent preference" for a room when it contained an Oreo as when they were given injections of morphine and cocaine.

After the experiment, the research group also concluded the following:

"We [students and professors conducting the study] found that the high-fat or high-sugar food activated the brain to a greater extent than the cocaine or morphine.

So this probably has you wondering if you need to stop eating Oreos altogether…

A spokeswoman for the maker of America’s favorite cookie wants to make sure that this study doesn’t discourage you from picking up your next pack of Oreos during your next grocery store visit. She says the cookies were us as a “proxy for a non-specific ‘sweet’ variable.”

If Oreos (aka food with high-sugar/high fat content) activate the brain even more than a highly-additive drug such as cocaine or morphine, this raises the idea that perhaps after consumption on a regular basis, eating junk food is no longer a choice, but an addiction.

Maybe people with obesity problems should be treated in similar fashion to those who suffer from drug or alcohol addiction.
