Bali: Day 5
Thursday April 6th, 2017
Breakfast: Complimentary roll with bacon, spinach & egg whites via Room Service Lunch: Smashed avocado on toast with tomato & feta from Sisterfields Dinner: Pork bao & Thai-style BBQ ribs with chips from Bo & Bun
Steps: 20, 086
Today was a bit on a non-event. We wanted to cross some touristy stuff off our list, but we mainly just walked around. We had brekky in our villa, showered and then walked into Seminyak Square at around 11am. Today was extra muggy and the sun was out in force. We had both dressed very “Melbourne” and I instantly regretted it – I was wearing a light coloured tshirt and runners and I could feel my feet swelling and the sweat on my back sticking to my top – gross!
By the time we got in there and looked around, melting slightly, we decided to stop at Sisterfields Café for lunch, which is owned by the same people who own Bo$$ Man Burger next door. The air conditioning was welcomed with open arms. I had a latte and the smashed avocado & Tommy had a coke and the Dirty Burger (which he claims is what Royal Stacks in Melbourne should taste like).
Tommy had read on Trip Advisor about the Seminyak Flea Markets, so we tried to find them and see if the prices were any cheaper for shoes, singlets & sunnies. We thought they might be cheaper, but the reviews suggested otherwise. I knew which road it was on, but we started down the wrong end, couldn’t find it, and soon gave up. Instead we walked around the other side of the beach to find Potato Heads Beach Club. We finally got there and the security was really tight. We had to have our bags checked and out body’s scanned before being let in – weird. The bar was HUGE and had a very chilled out, resort vibe. There was a pool overlooking the beach, with a big collection of day beds and then a restaurant with some lounge tables up the back, where we sat. If we’d arrived earlier, and planned our time better, we could have had a better spot (and not been wearing street clothes at a beach bar), but ordered some cocktails and sat down anyway. The cocktails were huge and delicious! They were only $12 each – I had a Nana Colada and Tommy had a Bonzola Zombie – both yummy and they gave us a nice buzz.
At around 4pm, like clockwork, the rains started and people started heading back to their hotels. We decided to keep walking around and Tommy bought me a poncho, as I’d left my umbrella back at our villa. We were walking in the rain and I was feeling super sticky and gross under the poncho. My feet were also starting to hurt. We stopped in at a cute donut shop, which was newly opened, named Dough Darlings and got one each. They were nice, but cannot compare to the strong donut game happening in Melbourne at the moment.
For some reason, we took the long way and walked all the way back to our villa instead of taking a cab. It took over an hour. My feet were aching at this point. We stopped in for a super quick beer at King Kebab and by the time we got home, we were both tuckered out, so had a shower and a nap for an hour. We woke up at 6.30pm and got ready for dinner.
We went around the corner to Bo & Bun for dinner, which serves Vietnamese food. We had the chicken bao & a serve of the ribs and chips each. The food here is amazing! Cannot recommend it enough. The wifi is also good quality and they had their fans on full speed, which felt awesome. Tommy ducked out to get a drink from the servo and left me to pay. One thing I don’t like about Bali is that the waitresses give you the bill and wait for you to pay, while you’re fumbling around with the money. I had the exact amount and couldn’t tip, so I felt bad. I then nearly walked out without my leftover ribs that they’d put in a container for me. As we were walking back to our villa, we heard a little voice saying “scuse me, Miss… Miss!” – it was our waiter from the restaurant. Tommy had left his bag under the table (with his GoPro inside) and he had followed us down the whole street. What a legend.
We walked around Seminyak for a while, stopped at the servo to get a travel Bintang while we explored and decided to check out Seminyak Beach. It was pitch black by this point so we couldn’t see much, but we could see just how much rubbish people had left there from the day just done. Disgusting. There are only a few rubbish bins on the streets, so people were obviously getting lazy. We chilled on the beach for a bit, Tommy took some photos with his GoPro and then we got a cab back home.
We had put all our dirty clothes from the trip so far in to the laundry service and it was back in our room by the time we got home. When we’d filled out the little tag, we’d estimated it would cost about $58 – so expensive! In Thailand it had cost nothing, but this was a bit ridiculous. Nevertheless, Tommy had worn all of his singlets and wanted clean ones, so we put the load in. When we looked at the receipt, they had charged us $75. They never include the tax on the pricing here, so it’s always a surprise. We are going to start taking more notice and make sure that we’re not just being charged extra for no reason.
We’re going to make more happen tomorrow – Tommy wants to check out the Super Human Fitness Centre and maybe a water park ☺
